The scammers come in many varieties: The slick broker who saves a home from foreclosure, only to vanish with the title The caregiver who exploits an older man’s trust to hijack his deed The financial whiz who promises a mortgage renegotiation that ends in an eviction Every year, cases like these afflict homeowners across New York City The schemes are examples of deed theft a practice in which people fraudulently take ownership of others homes

Popular Gen Z slang words like “rizz” and “slay” have become so widespread that these terms topped Unscramblerer s list of most popular slang in 2025 But where do these buzzworthy words come from, and how do they become so deeply embedded in our everyday language that friends and even parents start using them? Experts say many of the words now labeled as Gen Z slang actually have roots that reach back centuries, particularly in Black culture and to African American Vernacular English (AAVE)

Me and Struggle
I woke up this morning just like I wake up most every morning –In spite of myself
I woke up this morning and there was struggle hovering over my bed waiting to shroud me in my day
I woke up this morning and I said: Come on struggle, I know where you came from but you ain't gon have your way
I woke up this morning just like I wake up most every morning –having a few words with God.
I woke up this morning and I said: Lord, you sent me this struggle and you say it’s a gift, well, I’ll take it today Lord, long as you remind struggle that I’m in charge
So I woke up this morning happy –that me and struggle got us another day.

Statewide Fir e Aler t Issued
MONTGOMERY, AL
With worsening drought conditions across the state and low relative humidity, State Forester Rick Oates has issued a statewide Fire Alert effective immediately
Over the past weekend, 50 wildfires burned more than 2,300 acres of forestland across the state This includes a 500-acre wildfire in Mobile County one for 412 acres in Coosa County one for 382 acres in Choctaw County one for 260 acres in Washington County, and another one for 105 acres in Escambia County
In the last 30 days, 387 wildfires have burned approximately 15 850 acres of forestland across the state
“With no measurable rain in sight, the continued extremely dry conditions create dangerous wildfire behavior, said Oates
These conditions create the potential for fires to escape easily and spread rapidly taking longer and more of the agency’s firefighting resources to contain Fast-moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters
This Fire Alert will remain in effect until rescinded by the State Forester, at least through Monday April 20 Conditions will be reevaluated at that time Permits for outdoor burning will be restricted only to Certified Prescribed Burn Managers
Anyone who burns a field, grassland, or woodland without a burn permit may be subject to prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor
The Alabama Forestry Commission is the state agency committed to protecting Alabama s invaluable forest assets and its citizens To report a wildfire call (800) 392-5679 For more information on the current wildfire situation in the state or any other forestry-related issues, contact your local AFC office or visit the agency website at www forestry alabama gov

Faith without the noise
By Julianne Malveaux
(TriceEdneyWire com) -
I was raised Catholic
Not casually Catholic
My mother was the kind of Catholic who went to Mass every day Faith was not something she talked about; it was something she did In our aqua-blue kitchen, she had the lyrics, in white paint, Holy Mary, dressed in blue, teach me how to pray ” She prayed without ceasing and her prayers were deep and strong
series of takes It is loud and, for the most part, unhelpful
We have developed a habit of treating religious figures like political ones as if they occupy the same space They don’t Political leaders govern behavior, while religious leaders at their best try to speak to conscience But we have grown so accustomed to spectacle that even conscience has to compete for airtime
ways holding onto it
As soon as I learned about the Church s historical role in sanctioning enslavement I was repulsed and I made my opinion known, quite vocally: skipping Mass, arguing with priests, and sometimes embarrassing my mother Sexual abuse in the Church repulses me
T he crisis calling fr om inside the house

Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh 6; Layla Pugh 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; Braylon Snow 5; and Jayla Elkins who was just 3 years old
Each of these women and all eight of these children died at the hands of men who were supposed to protect and provide for them in the last month
Unfortunately, these murders aren’t happening in a vacuum Stories of angry, despondent men violently killing their wives, girlfriends, and children are occurring in our community at an alarming rate And far too often, we re left asking why
In the mass shooting in Shreveport the nation’s deadliest since 2024 the family of the shooter, Shamar Elkins, stated he was struggling with his mental health in the midst of a divorce before killing his family Former Lt Governor of Virginia Justin Fairfax was also said to have been experiencing isolation and depressive episodes before killing his wife and himself days after being requested to appear at a divorce hearing And after murdering his wife, Nancy, Stephen Bowen told his uncle that he couldn t take it anymore
The disturbing pattern in each of these cases is a group of men not just struggling with mental health but a general lack of value for the lives of their loved ones Taken together, these cases reveal something larger than individual tragedy; they reveal a crisis hiding in plain sight
Researchers have documented the rise of a male loneliness epidemic that was sweeping the country, and its effects on emotional stability ability to connect with others and even how men perceive reality Researchers also found that in the absence of meaningful relationships men who spent more time online often found themselves tar-
geted by algorithms that promote toxic podcasters and influencers who spout negative tropes and stereotypes about women This world called the “red pill encourages men to dehumanize and assert power over women socially, at home and in the workplace
While there s no direct correlation between these tragedies and toxic internet culture the risks of isolation and the inability or refusal to engage with mental health supports are evident But for many men of color accessing mental healthcare isn t easy
There are financial barriers that keep Black men out of care Stigmas associated with therapy, like being labeled crazy or “weak,” encourage men to compartmentalize and use self-soothing tactics like drinking or substances that raise the risk of violent outbursts And with only 4 percent of mental health professionals being Black finding professionals that men can connect with is also a challenge
The combination of feeling like finding help is imp o s s i b l e , compartmentalizing that leads to isolation and predatory algorithms that spew hatred towards women has created a perfect storm for violence and self-harm According to the National Library of Medicine, suicide has become the third leading cause of death among Black people and for younger men most vulnerable to alienating internet culture, rates of mental health decline are rising
Tackling this crisis that is tearing our families and community apart will take acknowledging the structural issues that are breaking down the mental health of Black men while holding men accountable for their actions
Making mental health the center of these stories risks minimizing the decisions that these men made to take the lives of their loved ones And imposing accountability without investing in preventative measures to ensure that these acts of violence don’t happen again is also shortsighted
This means calling it what it is: a structural decline in the value of human lives And these cases in our community, are examples of the devaluing of Black lives
If you or a loved one needs support with anxiety, depression, or thoughts of self-harm or harm against others call or text 988 for help today
I went to a Jesuit college Boston College where faith was woven into the intellectual life questions of justice, responsibility and what it means to live a life of purpose It wasn t always comfortable, but it was always present
So when I hear people arguing about the pope as if religion were a political sport, I find myself out of step with the conversation because that’s not the faith
I knew
The noise is everywhere Commentary about Pope Francis what he said what he meant who agrees, who doesn t fills panels and social media feeds, turning belief into a
The numbers tell us something is changing Church attendance in the United States has been declining for years, and fewer people claim formal affiliation Yet nearly nine in ten Americans say they believe in God or some higher power Many are no longer sitting in pews, but belief persists We measure what is easiest to count attendance, affiliation, participation but not what is harder to see: practice, discipline belief
Faith as I understood it growing up, was never about being seen
My mother did not go to Mass every day so someone could check her attendance She went because that was how she ordered her life discipline gratitude and a quiet insistence that there was something larger than whatever the day might bring
My own relationship with Catholicism has been more complicated I don t come to this conversation as a defender of the Catholic Church; I come as someone shaped by it, challenged by it, angered by it, and still, in some
The betrayal of trust, and the lengths taken to conceal it stand in painful contradiction to the values the institution professes
The codified inferior role of women has never sat easily with me either
It is undeniably an imperfect church, but its imperfections do not diminish its relevance
Years ago, I wrote about the patriarchy embedded in the Church, and one of my small symbolic protests has been ending prayers with amen, a-woman, and ase’ ” Inequality does not disappear simply because we believe in our Creator
A mentor once asked whether I could point to any institution entirely free of racism or sexism I could not
When I hear that we are created in the image and likeness of God, I find myself looking for a stainedglass window with a pecan-colored woman with gray dreadlocks I haven’t seen one yet
And still the quiet practiced kind of faith does not lend itself to commentary, nor does it disappear simply because fewer people are sitting in church There are still people who pray before the day begins, give thanks before they ask, and
show up for others not because it is convenient, but because it is right It is also worth noticing the signals we choose to see Pope Francis has chosen to live in modest quarters rather than the traditional papal apartments a small but visible gesture in an institution known for grandeur In a world accustomed to power on display that kind of restraint stands out not because it is dramatic, but because it is not
My grandmother used to say that some people come to God with their hands out and their mouths open It was her way of reminding us that faith is not only about asking but about recognizing, giving thanks, and showing up with something other than need We don’t talk much about that kind of faith anymore It doesn t fit neatly into our arguments or produce a headline, but it may be closer to what faith actually is If nearly all of us believe in something beyond ourselves then the question is not whether faith is disappearing, but whether we have misunderstood where it lives It may not be in the noise we amplify or the arguments we keep having but in the quiet, daily practices that go largely unseen

A “Main Str eet” Bank Bill that would r eall y hur t Main Str eet
By Ben Jealous
(TriceEdneyWire com) -
In Washington, the name on a bill is often the opposite of what it does
The Main Street Depositor Protection Act is the latest example The name sounds noble The math is not
Here is what the bill would change The FDIC is the federal agency that pays you back if your bank closes its doors Today it covers up to $250,000 in each account Most people never come close to that limit Most small businesses do not either The bill would let the FDIC raise that limit as high as $5 million for business checking accounts that pay no interest That is not a small bump That is twenty times bigger
Supporters say the change will help small community banks and the small businesses they serve I wish that were true
It is not
The current $250 000 limit already covers 99 out of every 100 bank accounts in this country A study by JPMorgan Chase found that the typical small business keeps about $12 100 in its account on a normal day The new limit would be more than 400 times higher than that So who really gains from a $5 million guarantee? Not the corner bakery Not the family barbershop Not the small farm down the road The gain goes to the biggest depositors at the biggest banks The bill even covers banks with more than $100 billion to their name Fewer than one in 100 banks in America are that big No honest person would call them small
In other words the bill takes the name of Main Street and hands the prize to Wall Street Here is the part that should worry every American Insurance is not free When the FDIC raises its guarantee banks must pay more to fund it When banks pay more, they lend less When they lend less,
the door closes hardest on the people who are already locked out
Black-owned businesses are already turned down for loans 39 percent of the time That is more than double the 18 percent rate for white-owned businesses Hispanic-owned businesses face a 29 percent denial rate These are the dreamers most likely to hear no when they walk into a bank A new cost on lending will make that “no” come faster and louder The economy runs on loans When loans dry up, the trouble spreads The Great Recession of 2008 began exactly that way The people who pay the highest price are never the wealthiest They are the families with the least cushion to fall back on
The bill does offer a small shield to community banks under $10 billion They would not pay the higher costs for ten years
That is a kind gesture But the wider damage to the loan market will not wait ten years to arrive
There is one more problem Deposit insurance works in part because it has limits Limits force big depositors to pay attention to where they put their
money That attention keeps banks honest Take the limit away, and you take the watchdog away too The taxpayer is left to clean up the mess
The goal of helping Main Street is a good one
This bill is not the way to reach it
If Congress wants to help small business, it should make loans easier and fairer to get It should invest in the neighborhoods that banks have ignored for too long It should knock down the doors that have stayed shut for Black and Hispanic business owners for generations
And if big corporations want extra protection for their millions, they can pay for it themselves The taxpayer should not be asked to insure the comfort of the rich while the dreams of working families go unfunded
Read the name of a bill
Then read the math The two should match On the Main Street Depositor Protection Act, they do not

T he GOP’s ger r ymandering war may backfir e
By David W Marshall
(TriceEdneyWire com) -
These are not normal times we are living in when it comes to the partisan gerrymandering war The state of Virginia successfully passed a referendum that allows Democrats to hit back hard in their redistricting counteroffensive against the Republicans Virginia’s current congressional delegation has six Democrats and five Republicans, which accurately reflects the state The new map turns what was a fair depiction into an advantage, giving Democrats 10 of the state’s 11 districts
This leaves the Republicans with 9% of the state’s congressional representation despite Republicans and Republican-leaning voters comprising nearly half of the state’s electorate The gerrymandering war demonstrates the latest action-reaction dynamic in electoral politics while becoming another example of Sir Isaac Newton s third law of motion Newton’s third law states that for every action (force) in nature, there is an equal and opposite reaction
This means if object A exerts a force on object B object B will exert an equal and opposite force on object A President Donald Trump started this current redistricting madness by pressuring Texas legislators to adopt a map that favored Republicans in five seats currently held by Democrats When Texas Gov Greg Abbott and the Republican-led legislature complied, the Democrats didn’t accept it without a national fight Voters in California and now Virginia have aggressively pushed back, Donald Trump and Republicans launched this gerrymandering war, House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters “And we’ve made clear as Democrats that we re going to finish it ” The political version of Newton’s third law is definitely in play with the president pushing Republicans to gerrymander their states on one side and the House minority leader doing the same with the Democrats on the other
As I lead a social justice ministry at a local church in Maryland, we are challenged with the reality that many people are not paying attention to and understanding the political climate we face Particularly those with long-lasting consequences for the Black community During a recent SJM meeting, I asked the members to tell
me why they felt so many Black people do not consistently vote The purpose of the question was to identify the reasons and then discuss ways to address them
The variety of answers included: people don’t understand the voting process and its impact people are in survival mode and focused more on the personal issues of their lives people see politics as a game and are turned off by it, people don’t vote because there is too much division and voting adds to the division people lost hope and believe their vote doesn’t count Each response is understandable The gerrymandering war can easily turn off voters because it is a game It is a political game that reflects the constant power grabs for control in our social and political systems and it feeds into the wide range of reasons people don t vote
If I were a voter in Virginia I too would have voted for the referendum's passage In the past, I disagreed with any methods of mapmaking that disproportionally and unfairly flip congressional seats Generally gerrymandering is wrong when both parties act to predetermine election results Before this latest war Democratic states such as Maryland New York, and Illinois were already heavily gerrymandered But these are not normal times and Newton s law is needed to keep the aggressive Republican tactics in check
People must always have the assurance that their one vote does matter, even in this toxic political climate
The results of gerrymandered districts remain in the hands of the voters The positive signs from Texas show that Hispanic support is not guaranteed to meet 2024 levels As a result, the president’s plan to create five GOP-friendly districts may actually backfire
While people are correct in their assessment about the divisiveness of politics it should never mean that political power and control are automatically turned over to elected officials by not casting their vote Applying Newton’s law to aggressive Republican tactics doesn’t have to be left solely to Democratic-controlled state legislatures It still comes down to voters in the general elections especially in gerrymandered districts that remain competitive It is an encouraging sign to see the opposition party step up Just as the Democratic leadership pushed back on the issue of gerrymandering by way of a national strategy, can they do the same with the anti-DEI attacks?

The 3 C’s – Cost, Corruption & Chaos
Cost Corruption and Chaos I call these the three C s So do others In my humble opinion it describes the Trump Administration to the C Oh! I am sorry I mean to the “T ” The three C s – Cost, Corruption & Chaos
Former President Donald campaigned vigorously on reducing the cost of living He said that he would reduce the cost of living “on day one ” Of course few if any expected the newly elected President Trump to reduce the cost of living on day one However many fully expected living costs to be reduced during the first six months
The three C’s – Cost Corruption & Chaos
The cost of living has been going up instead of down Inflation has risen 3 3 percent The price of gas has risen in places from two dollars and something to four dollars and something per gallon The price of diesel has risen more than fifty percent in certain areas The price of food will rise even higher because fertilizer transportation and labor costs are increasing The price of electrical power is also rising The three C s – Cost, Corruption & Chaos
President Trump increased costs by implementing many tariffs while insisting the cost would be paid by other countries
However tariffs are paid by U S businesses and their customers not by other countries These tariffs are taxes on all who live in this country The three C’s – Cost Corruption & Chaos
Then President Trump started a war with Iran in the midst of negotiations about nuclear material He had promised no more wars This war resulted in about 20 percent of the oil supply being shut down along with up to 30 percent of certain derivatives such as fertilizer for farming
This increased costs on food and countless other necessities and products because fuel and transportation and energy are more costly The three C s – Cost Corruption & Chaos
President Trump increased the cost of healthcare for many citizens by reducing the funding for Medicaid and Medicare
He increased the cost of many activities through his mass deportation policies and actions These activities increased labor costs for farming, food production and related matters
The ways costs have increased are too many to document here The three C’s – Cost, Corruption & Chaos
The corruption is massive by any measure It begins with the President himself He is scheming to secure 230 million dollars from the U S Justice Department He says he was treated illegally by those investigating and indicting him He is also trying to secure $10 billion dollars from the IRS He claims that the IRS illegally released his tax return information His children are securing government contracts The three C’s – Cost Corruption & Chaos
President Trump pardoned many convicted criminals who created massive financial crimes This includes a person from Florida who was convicted
of defrauding Medicaid out of $1 3 billion He also pardoned the Former President of Guatemala who was convicted of massive drug crimes and sentenced to 45 years in prison He pardoned virtually all of the January 6 defenders who attacked law enforcement, broke into the U S Capitol and were duly convicted There are so many more of his supporters who have received or are in line to receive unlawful payments through the U S Justice Department The whole Trump pardon system smells of corruption The three C’s – Cost Corruption & Chaos President Trump’s sonin-law, Jared Kushner, was assigned to participate in various negotiations in the Middle East during President Trump s initial term When President Trump’s first administration ended, Jared Kushner received 2 billion dollars from Saudi Arabia for Kushner s newly created fund Jared Kusher had NO prior experience with Middle East negotiations or investment funds Now he is back during the second administration trying to negotiate an agreement with Iran while allegedly attempting to secure another 5 billion dollars from impacted countries in the Middle East The whole thing smells to high heaven The three C’s – Cost Corruption & Chaos
There are the multiple businesses in which President Trump and his sons are involved that are doing business in various countries involved with the United States In addition there are the terrible things with social media and tech companies which involve hundreds of millions dollars The President s net worth appears to have increased by more than 3 billion dollars just during the first year since taking office in January 2025 There is so much more including massive crypto dealings and other unknown interests The manner means and breath of the corruption are too many to document here The three C’s –Cost, Corruption & Chaos
Then there is the chaos It is everywhere and in nearly everything There was the chainsaw initiative led by Elon Musk, the world s richest man He ransacked the entire government, taking confidential information at will and firing tens of thousands of government employees without assessment of need Whole government programs were shut down willy nilly The three C’s –Cost, Corruption & Chaos
There are the tariffs
One day they were on and the next day they were off Off and on On and off They were all illegal This caused international economic chaos If President Trump didn’t like what leaders of certain nations said he slapped on a big tariff in response The three C s – Cost, Corruption & Chaos
President Trump has caused great disruption and chaos in international relations He has gotten closer to longtime dictator countries such as Russia, Korea, and China He has attacked longtime allies such as Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany and Denmark He has bombed eight countries in a year He has
bombed numerous boats in the Caribbean Sea He has threatened to bomb other countries such as Columbia in South America He has imposed Naval blockades on Venezuela Cuba Iran and threatened to impose the same on other countries He removed the leader of one country, seizing the Country’s oil The three C’s – Cost, Corruption & Chaos He has wreaked havoc though his widespread attacks on institutions of democracy including freedom of speech, voting, universities organizations large law firms and various individuals who opposed him or he perceives oppose him He reduced the U S Justice Department into a personal law firm for himself All these and more add to chaos The three C s – Cost Corruption & Chaos
The chaos springing from Trump’s immigration policies is massive The flooding of cities with thousands of immigration agents, who too often utilized unconstitutional search and seizure tactics including the shooting of protesters killing at least two The chaos is too far reaching to document here
The three C’s – Cost Corruption & Chaos
Any of these C’s would be a serious problem
However, all three are just too much Moreover each compounds the others in unanticipated ways for the worse We are in a real mess The three C s – Cost, Corruption & Chaos

EarthTalk® From the Editors of E - The Environmental Magazine
Dear EarthTalk: Why is allergy season longer and more intense lately? -Sneezing in Snohomish
During springtime many people develop a series of symptoms generalized as seasonal allergies: coughing sneezing itchy eyes and congestion just to name a few These symptoms are widespread; in 2024, the Asthma and Al-
Allergy season seems to be worse than ever lately, and scientists are blaming you guessed it global warming Credit: Pexels com
lergy Foundation of America reported that some 81 million people in the U S suffer from seasonal allergies This number is growing as symptoms are becoming more intense and allergy season is getting
longer
The cause of these allergies comes down to one product of flowering plants: pollen This substance becomes more prevalent during the springtime when
Just two days ago, a Brooklyn city councilman was among several people arrested at a protest against the crime
Now the city is creating an Office of Deed Theft Prevention that will investigate instances of deed theft and try to stamp them out
The theft of a home is the theft of a family s future, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Friday as he announced the creation of the office
“Deed theft preys on the New Yorkers who can least afford it Today we are bringing the full force of city government to bear to stop it to protect homeowners defend generational wealth and make clear that this City will not tolerate the exploitation of our communities ”
Deed theft has been a particular problem in predominantly Black neighborhoods, where investors can capitalize on rising property values and gentrification
Mr Mamdani, who has focused much of his attention on helping the city s renters, is moving to create the office as he seeks to improve his political standing with Black homeowners and their representatives
He appointed Peter White a lawyer who has worked for more than seven years at Access Justice Brooklyn a nonprofit group to lead the office Mr White worked on several deed theft and foreclosure related cases at the group
My fundamental goal is to make life better for New York City homeowners,” Mr White said on Friday, appearing alongside Mr Mamdani at the Brooklyn Bank, a nonprofit based in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood that helps people build financial independence
This is something I ve tried to do since the beginning of my legal career
Mr Mamdani said the office would have a budget of $500,000 in the current fiscal year, which ends in the summer, and $1 million in the next The office is expected to find ways to better educate homeowners on the warning signs of deed theft as well as connect potential victims with lawyers and law enforcement
The office will also work on crafting new city and state legislation that could help public officials crack down on the practice
It will be part of the city’s Finance Department and will coordinate efforts between the housing department the commission on human rights and more
While government officials have pursued deed theft cases in recent years it remains a difficult problem to address It is not always obvious to homeowners that they have been victims, and years could pass before any offense is reported
It can also be tough to determine when behavior is criminal and when a homeowner may simply be making a bad decision involving getting rid of their home And the legal ownership of a home may be murky particularly if the property was inherited by several different heirs or is in the hands of a guardian or conservator
The protest this week where the councilman, Chi Ossé, was arrested, did not center on an actual example of deed theft according to the state attorney general’s office but a property dispute between heirs and relatives of the property’s former co-owners
Still, officials have worked to more effectively address the issue In 2024, state officials passed a law, known as the Heirs Property Protection and Deed Theft Prevention Act, that firmly established deed theft as a crime The law was written in part by Letitia James, the state attorney general
One government estimate from 2023 found that there were at least 3 500 complaints of deed theft filed over the previous decade
The Furman Center at New York University released an analysis last April that found that tens of thousands of New York City homeowners were vulnerable to deed theft scams under-market sales and other legal problems that could strip them of their equity

Minutes before Allen allegedly stormed the building he sent copies of his manifesto to several family and friends according to reports
Inside the shocking decree, the 31-year-old referred to himself as the Cole coldForce Friendly Federal Assassin Allen, before listing his targets and motivations behind the drastic attack
“So I may have given a lot of people a surprise today Let me start off by apologizing to everyone whose trust I abused he began I don t expect forgiveness but if I could have seen any other way to get this close, I would have taken it Allen went on to explain his frustrations with the current administration and its many controversial policies “I am a citizen of the United States of America What my representatives do reflects on me ” he said “And I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile rapist and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes
The Saturday attack marks at least the third assassination attempt on the president According to Allen– who put Trump as the first on his hit list– he allegedly took action after repeatedly watching the unprecedented actions by Trump and his officials
“The United States of America are ruled by the law not by any one or several people ” Allen continued Insofar as representatives and judges do not follow the law, no one is required to yield them anything so unlawfully ordered
Originally from Torrance, Calif , Allen worked as a teacher before allegedly plotting to kill the president LinkedInshows he graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 2017 with a degree in mechanical engineering He later earned a master s degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills, in computer science in 2025
After working as an engineer, Allen became an independent game developer and parttime teacher He allegedly traveled across the country days before the Saturday attack Officials noted he did not have a criminal record before the Saturday incident NBC News reported Still, members of his family reportedly warned police about him way before the attack took place, according to Trump
The White House shared that Allen’s brother contacted police in Connecticut, after receiving his manifesto Still that didn’t stop Allen from rushing into the hotel building and getting extremely close to allegedly killing the president Authorities confirmed Allen is the primary and only suspect in the ongoing investigation He was allegedly armed with a shotgun, handgun and several knives at the time of the attack During a quick altercation with security, Allen was subdued Trump shared surveillance footage of Allen’s dash and his arrest to social media
Interestingly Allen made note of what he called a supreme level of incompetence by Trump s security and Secret Service I expected security cameras at every bend, bugged hotel rooms, armed agents every 10 feet, metal detectors out the wazoo,” he added “What I got (who knows maybe they’re pranking me!) is nothing ”

the warm weather triggers flowers to open up When pollen accumulates to high levels in the air, humans can develop an immune system response that leads to a physical reaction The problem is that the air is getting warmer, and plants are producing pollen for a longer duration and in larger amounts than before A longer growing season means the plants have more time to produce pollen ” says Dr Rana Misiak an allergy specialist at Henry Ford Health “And that results in pollen circulating in the air for a longer period of time In addition, droughts and dry weather can cause more pollen production, along with higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere Air pollutants such as carbon dioxide damage the surface of the
One thing all the participants and speakers had in common: They were farmers, ranchers, or worked directly with producers Some were local to the area located about 10 miles south of Tupelo and about 2 hours from the state capital of Jackson Others said they drove at least three hours
Many attend the half-day conference every year, hosted by the Mississippi Minority Farmers Alliance and Coalition of Farmers
By 8:30 a m , they’d all taken their seats In a hyper-political climate where resources and support to help farmers have dwindled, this group didn’t focus on the challenges brought on by the Trump administration s policies and changes to federal programs Instead, they gathered to talk about how this moment is an opportunity to inspire the youth and build partnerships together And they aren’t the only ones
Across rural America, Black producers in agriculture shared concerns about the U S Department of Agriculture s continuing efforts to eliminate grants, but they’re not exhausting their energy on navigating such challenges From Georgia to New York and even in Kentucky, farmers are inviting their own to lead conversations workshops and spend time in their communities In June, the Texas International Ranchers and Farmers will host a threeday convening for farmers and students in rural Nacogdoches
When Tiffany Bellfield El-Amin started planning for her organization’s conference, the news hit that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits would be delayed Some funders could no longer support the Kentucky Black Farmers Association, the organization she founded They realized they couldn’t really rely on the government as they once did After conversations with farmers, they exclaimed “We got us which birthed the theme for this year s conference focusing on culture, connection, and collective power
The funding that we usually received was in partnership with Kentucky State University and we realized that because of their federal funding, they wouldn t be able to fund it, either So ‘We got us’ got even deeper ” Bellfield ElAmin said [We said] We ll figure it out Everybody can bring a dish We can do this family reunion style ”
The importance of cultivating a space of collective care, addressing farmer ’s needs and knowing where the resources are is critical she added Some participants refused stipends Others showed up, even though their employers couldn’t pay for them to come Students attended, too, and got to experience the farms
pollen making it more allergenic
Pollen production is heightened by climate change Human activities are causing global temperatures to rise, subsequently worsening allergy season for many “To me [worsening allergies] highlight the fact that our health even if you just have a pollen allergy is being impacted by climate change ” says Mary Margaret Johnson MD, PhD, a research scientist of environmental health at Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health
And some have much more severe health consequences from climate change ” This means that the health of an individual is somewhat out of their hands it is up to climate change to determine the
Food was sourced locally from our Black farmer members We had Black bourbon, Black wine and spirits We had steppers come in from Louisville Kentucky We had people camp out at the farm,” Bellfield El-Amin said “It felt like the best family reunion like I was with all my cousins, and we’re trying to figure out how we’re going to maintain and sustain ourselves and our communities
Many panelists at the Shannon convening shared resources to help farmers and reemphasized their commitment to farming As Carolyn Jones, director of the Mississippi Minority Farmers Alliance put it it s time to cut the noise and “surround ourselves with positivity ” Experts like Eloris Speight former director of the National Policy Research Center at Alcorn State shared information about farm business protection programs Mississippi State University professor Kevin Kim provided an overview of projected market conditions and Walter Jackson, an agronomy consultant and cattle rancher, told the audience about a regenerative agriculture initiative There were also sessions led by local pastors on religion and the community and a panel on health and wellness while other panelists brought awareness of potential business opportunities
Take Malone Buchanan for instance He s a retired forester who owns a pine timber company He emphasized the importance of timber and how others can take advantage of foresting operations
“Whatever county you’re in you need to know who the movers are who the shakers are, and you need to know where the money comes from ” Buchanan said “I would like to grow my business with some new younger people
The power of the next generation of farmers
severity of their allergies
Taking action to reduce collective carbon emissions and effectively slow the rise of global temperatures will help minimize symptoms felt by allergy season There are also many studies now being conducted like the Citizen Science HD’s Pollen Nation Project at Emory University or the National Phrenology Network that allow civilian participation If you are interested, you can learn more about these studies and contribute data towards their findings In addition any action to reduce your personal carbon footprint or advocate for pro-climate legislation will help to improve the current conditions of seasonal allergies
Kameka Cole-Gray emphasized the importance of youth in agriculture ColeGray works as the 1890 National Scholars Program s USDA program liaison for Alcorn State and Southern University She celebrated the students who she works with, including Gary McGhee, an agriculture economics major at Alcorn State McGhee doesn t come from a farming family, but he became interested in the agriculture industry when a mentor allowed him to tour farms and learn about the business side of farming from selling crops and livestock to owning land he said It pushed him to secure an internship with the USDA
“Hearing different people’s different perspectives on agriculture means a lot to me, so I can learn more and gain as much knowledge as possible and hopefully be my own professional in the ag (agriculture) field, he said Hopefully I get my own farm one day ”
The current climate and the reality of a declining Black farmer population hasn’t deterred McGhee from entering the profession he said If anything it s encouraged him to get his friends involved
“It’s a lot of older Black farmers and not enough young farmers and I think that comes from not enough exposure,” he added “I got a lot of friends that don’t know about agriculture but now they see me doing it and they want to know more about it ” In the room on this day everyone had everything they needed to be successful, John Jones, a retired conservationist and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service employee told the group
“I just want you all to keep the faith keep hope alive because they can’t take it away from us, he said We have nothing to fear ”

as Communities Focus on Inclusion
By Sheanell Edwards,
TUCEP/Youth Development/4-H
Across the nation and in local communities, awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) continues to increase bringing greater understanding to a condition that affects millions of individuals and their families Autism is a developmental difference that influences how people communicate, interact socially, and experience the world around them Because it exists on a spectrum, no two individuals with autism are exactly alike
Health professionals
note that early signs of autism can appear in early childhood often through delayed speech limited eye contact, or repetitive behaviors However, individuals with autism may also demonstrate remarkable strengths, such as strong memory skills, attention to detail, and the ability to focus deeply on specific interests In recent years, schools and community organizations have taken steps to better support individuals with autism through inclusive classrooms, specialized instruction, and sensory-friendly environments Educators empha-
size that understanding each child’s unique needs is key to helping them succeed academically and socially
Families of individuals with autism often play a central role in advocacy and support, working closely with educators, healthcare providers, and community groups Many communities now host awareness events, workshops, and activities designed to educate the public and reduce stigma
Despite progress advocates say more work is needed to ensure access to resources early intervention services and inclusive
opportunities for all individuals on the spectrum Increased awareness has helped shift the conversation from limitations to possibilities, encouraging communities to focus on strengths rather than challenges
As understanding continues to grow, experts agree that acceptance and inclusion remain essential By fostering supportive environments and promoting education, communities can help ensure that individuals with autism are not only understood but also valued for the unique perspectives they bring
The Black history of Gen Z slang
A report by NBC News correspondent Marquis Francis explored the history of some of these phrases with language enthusiasts According to the report, some of these words emerged during periods of enslavement, born out of struggle and trauma Linguists note that such language was often used to communicate openly within the community while remaining opaque to outsiders Today many of these words are recognized as part of African American Vernacular English (AAVE), also called Ebonics
As previously reported, historians believe AAVE’s roots trace to English dialects introduced to the American South in the 17th and 18th centuries according to The Oxford Handbook of African American Language These dialects were adopted and adapted by African Americans, influenced by both British English and African languages as well as Caribbean creole varieties brought over by enslaved people Although AAVE is frequently mischaracterized as slang or incorrect” English, it is a fully distinct linguistic system with its own grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation patterns such as dropping “-ing” (e g goin instead of going ) or r-lessness and substitutions like fo for four or he be instead of he is
Negative stereotypes and improper attribution lead to the erasure of history, experts say
Over time, this vernacular evolved Many of the popular Gen Z terms that thrive today eventually circulated within popular Black subcultures including early hip-hop and underground drag scenes and were not widely embraced by the mainstream Words with letters dropped, or entire phrases combined to form new expressions, were often dismissed as improper speech associated with poverty or lack of education
Those negative stereotypes still exist today A 2021 study involving 20 audio recordings of 14 Black North American men and six Black British men asked participants to guess the speakers’ race and age The study found that speakers perceived as using AAVE were more likely to be stereotyped as lazy, uneducated, and poor Controversies surrounding AAVE are not new the 1996 Ebonics debate, in which the Oakland, California, Board of Education recognized it as a primary language to improve literacy sparked nationwide discussion and criticism
Today, however, these terms have permeated the default dialect of a generation transcending race region and class in the digital age Critics however have highlighted the erasure of Black origins, pointing out that non-Black Gen Zers often use these words without understanding their cultural significance and complicated history
“I don’t necessarily say that no one else can speak it but what I do say is it comes from those people that created it, said Sonja Lanehart, a linguistics professor at the University of Arizona and the author of The Oxford Handbook of African American Language, which she wrote to address misconceptions around AAVE
Linguists warn that when a word s origins are viewed negatively or stripped away, it can erase a community s history, a potentially dangerous consequence For Jamaal Muwwakkil a sociocultural anthropologist and linguist it is crucial that Gen Zers understand the history of these words and credit the people who created them
It doesn t make any sense to me that you can hear a word and then say, ‘That word sounds cool or it’s interesting; let me never look into it and just start saying it ’” Muwwakkil told Francis That seems strange to me He explained that AAVE was more than slang: it was a tool for enslaved people brought to the U S in the 17th century to find common ground among themselves using language to communicate within the community while remaining covert to outsiders It was a form of protection
Language experts stress that African American language is not exclusive to Black people, but understanding its history and giving proper attribution is essential Without that recognition some people may benefit from the language, while those who created it are often erased

A Call to Action to Help Fight Kidney Failur e in At-Risk Communities: American Kidney Fund Ur ges People to be APOL1 Awar e
Newly established AMKD Coalition unites leading voices to address need to heighten awareness of APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD)
ROCKVILLE, Md (April 28, 2026) – Today marks the third annual APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease (AMKD) Awareness Day, a day established by the American Kidney Fund (AKF) to encourage others to be “APOL1 Aware by educating communities about this genetic form of rapidly progressing kidney disease Support for AMKD Awareness Day is provided by Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated
In support of its work on AMKD AKF is proud to announce the newly established APOL1 Coalition, a multi-year project to define priority needs strengthen collaboration and centralize resources about AMKD Charter members of the coalition many of whom have been at the forefront of efforts to increase understanding of AMKD, include leading patient advocates scientists, industry members and professional organizations Support for the APOL1 Coalition is provided by AstraZeneca
“Most people are unaware of the fact that APOL1-mediated kidney disease advances faster than many other kidney diseases and can develop at a young age AMKD s aggressive nature compels us to ensure that people who could be at risk are informed so that they can be proactive about their kidney health,” said LaVarne A Burton President and CEO of AKF “The American Kidney Fund calls on communities to support our efforts to drive awareness and education about AMKD The more you know about your ancestry, the better you can protect your future, and your family’s future ”
Who does AMKD affect?
While everyone has two copies of the APOL1 gene, people of certain African ancestry are more likely to have APOL1 gene variants (mutations) that cause AMKD People who are Black, African American, African, Afro-Caribbean, and/or Hispanic/Latino with two inherited APOL1 risk variants have an increased likelihood of developing AMKD
An estimated 13% of
Black Americans have two APOL1 variants, which carries a roughly 1 in 5 risk of developing kidney disease
The link between the APOL1 gene variants and kidney disease was discovered recently about a decade and a half ago but research into understanding the disease is advancing steadily AMKD awareness, education, advocacy and outreach activities
As part of this year ’s AMKD Awareness Day a special episode of AKF s podcast, The Kidney Collective™, is now live, featuring a conversation between Burton and Alonzo Mourning, basketball Hall-of-Famer diagnosed with AMKD and paid spokesperson for Vertex Pharmaceuticals Burton will also provide remarks today about AMKD at the National Minority Quality Forum s Annual National Leadership Summit on Health Disparities
"AMKD Awareness Day is an important opportunity to elevate the voices and experiences of people and their families affected by
Eutaw Accent Flowers
APOL1-mediated kidney disease ” said Amit Sachdev Chief Patient and External Affairs Officer at Vertex Pharmaceuticals “Vertex is proud to partner with the American Kidney Fund to deepen education, advance advocacy and better support those most impacted by this genetic kidney disease "
Ongoing education, awareness and advocacy efforts also include:
• Educational sessions on AMKD at the National Society of Black Engineers Annual Convention and the Renal Physicians Association conference in April
C o l l a b o r a t i n g with organizations such as Black Greek Letter Organizations on educational efforts
• Training AKF’s Kidney Health Coaches to present about AMKD in their local communities Hosting a professional webinar about AMKD highlighting research and evolving standards of AMKD patient
care
• Educational messaging in doctors offices across the country
• Working with influencers to amplify educational information about
AMKD
• Translating educational materials to Spanish
• Promoting educational messages in select Urban One radio markets
• AKF Ambassadors are advocating for passage of the New Era of Preventing End-Stage Kidney Disease Act and the Access to Genetic Counselor Services Act with their members of Congress
AMKD Awareness Day is recognized annually on the last Tuesday of April during National Minority Health Month
It’s not too late to help spread awareness of AMKD and its connection to kidney disease supporters may download the AMKD Awareness Day Community Toolkit which includes resources to share on social media, within a workplace or community organizations and more They can also find AMKD Awareness Day graphics to share at https://socialpresskit com/amkd and use the hashtag #APOL1aware
