On a regular basis, members of the Trump administration, especially President Donald Trump himself, prove they are not the champions of free speech that they purport themselves to be and now their glaring constitutional hypocrisy has Pentagon officials threatening the Vatican and Pope Leo XIV who is no fan of the president just because the pope joined most of the world in criticizing Trump’s disastrous war on Iran

mined that ever to make a lasting difference for our students and our families Over the years I have had to make difficult choices I am fully aware that some of those decisions have been met with disagreement In public services, there is rarely a path that pleases everyone, but there is always a part that puts the people first When I cast a vote, I am not looking at personal gain, politics, or the easiest way out I am looking at the faces of the children in our classrooms and the taxpayers who fund their future My “past” in the office is a record of someone willing to take the heat if it means standing up for what I believe in right My goal has never been to be the most popular person in the room - it has been to be the most principled

Carol’s Notes In Community

My community is my home and Outside my house

My morning begins with coffee, New day greetings and news

Soon after, I shower and dress and have a light meal

Then I go out to Join my community outside my house

My community is my home and Outside my house

On occasion when I rise early Or had a brief night of sleep I relish the quiet of my house

In my stillness I welcome the Embrace of all that has come Through my house

Then I go out to Join my community outside my house

My community is my home and Outside my house

I greet my people in the grocery store, the post office and gas station We meet at church functions At school events And myriad of gatherings

We discuss government, politics, Education, health and our youth We talk, we agree, we disagree We plan But I am in community Where my community is my home and Outside my house

Ala bama and Ja pan Celebr ate 40 Year s of Friendship

The Japanese American Society of Alabama (JASA) hosted the 40th Annual Sakura Festival in Snow Hinton Park to celebrate the economic and cultural connection between the two countries The festival featured performances, games, snacks and ceremonies prominent in Japanese culture

The beginning of economic ties between Japan and Alabama began in the 1970-1980 s with the establishment of the Alabama Development Office, which established Tokyo trade office to attract Japanese investors The trade office allowed a direct link for Japanese business operations to receive support in

Alabama fostering the need for an organization like JASA to maintain cooperative relationships In 1999, the organization’s efforts to bridge the gap between cultures resulted in an economic milestone with Honda announcing its first assembly plant in Talladega County Since then Japan s economic influence in Alabama has generated thousands of jobs and investments that have surpassed ten billion dollars

Seeing the importance of Japan maintaining relationships JASA sought to fortify a cultural understating of Japan It is no secret that Japan is a country with a unique way of life centered on humility and respect

Many customs in Japan require humbling oneself with constant consideration for those that are older or in higher positions of authority Greetings are soft spoken and involve bowing, the complete opposite of an energetic, southern greeting with a handshake JASA knew knew that Alabama should understand and embrace not only Japanese business concepts and expectations but also cultural and educational issues

The Sakura Festival itinerary and stalls were rich with Japanese culture including information and graphics about Tuscaloosa s sister city in Japan, Norishino After a warm welcome Honorary Consul

General of Japan Mark B Jackson took to the stage

This is the most honorable thing I’ve been doing,” he stated Jackson has represented Alabama to Japan for over a decade and deeply appreciates the Japanese way of life

Once he finished addressing the crowd he welcomed Consul General Kenichi Matsuda who flew in from Japan for the event Matsuda is grateful for the “southern hospitality and welcoming atmosphere he can experience here in the states He is committed to doing his “utmost to further advance the friendship and partnership between our two nations ” The two participated in a sake barrel breaking cere-

mony to signify harmony and good fortune

Alongside friendship meetings and festivals, JASA sends students to Japan in an exchange program over the summer to further understand education The program sends twenty high school students to Japan in June to stay with families, and the Japanese students return with them in July for two weeks as well This exchange is imperative for the current generations to appreciate what each culture offers one another As Executive Director of Tuscaloosa Sister Cities International Shelley Corrill said, “How can you not love each other when you’re eating barbecue or sushi to-

gether?”

The relationship between Japan and Alabama is a vital component of the state’s economy Companies like Daikin Toray and various automotive suppliers have a strong impact on the automotive and manufacturing markets especially in Birmingham Huntsville, and Decatur Without Japan’s friendship, thousands would go unemployed JASA’s continued efforts remind us of the importance of working with other nations instead of against them In the words of Honorary Consul Jackson, It s all about one word relationships ”

National Urban League

(TriceEdneyWire com) -

They re not serious about the exploitation of college athletes, protecting their health safety and ability to share in the enormous profits that s being created because of their sweat and labor There’s no industry or activity in America where this much wealth is created and the people that actually create the wealth are not seeing the kind of benefits or protections they deserve -- U S Senator Cory Booker

College sports can open the doors of opportunity for student athletes All too often, exploitation is what steps through the opening

The SCORE Act and President Trump s April 2026 Executive Order to “Save College Sports” would transfer billions in wealth from student athletes to coaches and institutions, grant the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) unprecedented control over college athletics, and deny athletes the right to fair representation while leaving smaller sports programs and institutions, including Title IX programs and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) behind The National Urban League has urged Congress to delay consideration of the SCORE Act and similar proposals until after the midterms to ensure meaningful input from current and former players – and civil society – to promote a level playing field for student athletes

Both the SCORE Act and President Trump’s April 2026 Executive Order are fundamentally flawed Their efforts represent a transfer of wealth from student athletes to institutions and coaches who already benefit disproportionately from the lopsided system The SCORE Act, for example caps revenue sharing for athletes at 22 percent, while top coaches earn more than $10 million annually

Not surprisingly President Trump s Executive Order does nothing to ad-

Congress may be on re-

cess But the waitress covering a double shift, the nurse working overnight, the warehouse worker racing a delivery clock and the rideshare driver chasing fares didn t get the memo

America is still working House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries recently urged Speaker Mike Johnson to reconvene the House, arguing that lawmakers should be back in Washington doing the work they were elected to do Whether Speaker Johnson agrees or not, the moment raises a broader question: who gets to take a break in America?

dress this disparity or expand opportunities for fair compensation Instead, it empowers the NCAA to define the fair market value of NIL deals between student athletes and higher education institutions and constrains thirdparty NIL agreements, tying them to the compensation of other players

This approach restricts athletes ability to receive fair compensation from both institutions and third parties while relying on scholarships as a justification for limiting their earnings Importantly, the EO also threatens federal funding for colleges and universities who are not in compliance with the Order This scheme would likely negatively impact critical funding streams for institutions including Pell Grants, which are a lifeline for many students

The NCAA’s mistreatment of student athletes and strong pushback from the courts is not new In Haywood v NBA (1971) the Supreme Court rejected the NCAA s eligibility framework, which forced athletes to remain in college for four years before having an opportunity to play professionally The system, seemingly designed to benefit the NCAA and its member institutions required student athletes to remain in college for four years, even if they had the desire and talent to play professionally Additionally, in Johnson v NCAA (2024), the Third Circuit held that student athletes are not categorically barred from being considered employees under federal law In its opinion the court asked Do efforts that provide tangible benefits to identifiable institutions deserve compensation? In most instances they do ” Although the case was remanded to the district court for further analysis, the decision clearly rejects the NCAA’s longstanding claim that athletes are not entitled to basic labor protections

Rather than acknowledging the NCAA’s mistreatment of student athletes or pursuing reforms in compliance with the nation’s longstanding antitrust laws and recent court cases, the SCORE Act instead seeks to grant the NCAA an unprecedented antitrust exemption – insulating it from accountability and entrenching a system that extracts billions from athletes while denying them a commensurate share of the value they produce

cans live in a very different world

The United States is the only wealthy nation with no federal guarantee of paid vacation Workers in many European countries are guaranteed four or five weeks of paid leave each year In America, vacation is something you negotiate with your employer if you’re lucky enough to have an employer who offers it

hospitality, health care, and gig work receive no paid vacation at all

When Congress gavels out of session lawmakers return to districts where their salaries, benefits, and job security remain intact

Many of their constituents are juggling unpredictable schedules, holding multiple jobs, and worrying about groceries rent and childcare

paid leave have become less certain

Members of Congress earn $174,000 a year nearly three times the pay of the typical American worker with health insurance, generous benefits, and some of the most secure jobs in the country

Their paychecks continue whether Congress is in session or not Most Ameri-

The irony is that Americans are working more even as our economy becomes more productive Economist Juliet Schor found that by the late twentieth century the average American was working about 163 more hours per year than in 1969 roughly the equivalent of an extra month of work each year Technology was supposed to give us more leisure Instead, many Americans are working longer hours while Congress takes recess Even when workers receive paid leave, it is modest After a year on the job many workers get about ten vacation days After twenty years, they might reach twenty days But many workers never get that far The median American worker stays with an employer for roughly four years often not long enough to accumulate meaningful benefits Millions of workers especially those in retail,

Congressional recess is supposed to serve a purpose Lawmakers return to their districts to hear from constituents and understand the challenges people face Earlier generations of lawmakers often remained in Washington for long stretches while legislation moved through Congress

Today’s calendar reflects a different political reality one in which travel fundraising, and media appearances compete with the actual work of governing But recess also highlights a deeper inequality: the people making decisions about work and economic policy often enjoy levels of job security and rest that many Americans will never experience

The nature of work in the United States has changed dramatically over the past several decades

Stable careers have given way to gig work contract labor and irregular schedules Benefits that once came with employment pensions, health insurance,

These questions matter even more as the nature of work continues to change Gig work, contract labor, and unstable schedules are reshaping the American labor market Yet basic protections that workers in many other wealthy countries take for granted paid vacation predictable hours and time to rest remain elusive for millions of Americans

Yet our political system still operates as if the old world of stable jobs and predictable careers still exists

Jeffries’ call to reconvene Congress is ultimately about more than a legislative calendar It raises a simple question: why should the people making decisions about American work be the ones most insulated from its pressures?

Congress may call it a recess But the country doesn t stop working just because Congress takes a break America isn’t on vacation Maybe Congress shouldn t be either

Student debt is failing millions. A ppr enticeships of fer a better way.

America s student debt system is failing millions of people About 42 7 million borrowers owe more than $1 6 trillion More than 5 million have already gone more than a year without making a payment and are in default Another 4 million were already in late-stage delinquency when the U S Department of Education issued its warning last year

People do not usually end up in default because they are reckless They end up there because the payoff they were promised never arrives strongly enough or fast enough Some cannot find steady work Others find work that simply does not pay enough to carry the debt That is what it looks like when a path to mobility stops working for too

Such an exemption would grant the NCAA sweeping control over nearly every aspect of college sports while significantly limiting athletes’ ability to secure a meaningful seat at the table or pursue legal recourse Exemptions of this kind are exceedingly rare and clearly unjustified given the NCAA s long, multidecade history of mistreatment toward student athletes

many people That is why apprenticeships matter They start with work, wages and skill not a bill They let people earn while they learn They connect training directly to real jobs and real employers

And they do not belong only to the old trades important as those trades remain America still needs more electricians welders plumbers, carpenters, machinists and construction workers We need people who can build homes modernize the grid maintain infrastructure and keep the physical country running But apprenticeship is also being used in teaching health care public service, information technology and cybersecurity

Teacher apprenticeship has spread rapidly in recent years because states and employers are looking for better ways to fill essential jobs

Several states are making real progress Illinois has made meaningful moves including a tax credit of $3 500 per eligible apprentice, with another $1,500 available when the apprentice or the employer is in an underserved area North Car-

Equally concerning, the SCORE Act and President Trump s EO fail to provide student athletes with meaningful representation or the opportunity to organize and collectively bargain

Both efforts appear designed to preempt the implications of Johnson v NCAA (2024) which held that student athletes may be classified as employees, entitled to basic labor protections If student athletes were permitted to organize

olina has built a substantial statewide apprenticeship system Pennsylvania is putting more money into expansion

That is real progress

But Maryland is showing what it looks like when a state decides that apprenticeship belongs near the center of an economic mobility agenda Gov Wes Moore signed the RAISE Act and then launched a $5 million incentive program to help employers hire and train more apprentices His administration has made clear that apprenticeship is a way to grow the workforce and expand economic opportunity

For most families, the question is simple: Does a path lead to upward mobility or not?

Too many young Americans were told that if they studied hard borrowed what they had to and got the degree, they would move up Too often, they are still struggling to get started

The class side of this story is impossible to ignore

The people most likely to get crushed by student debt are the people who had the least room for error to begin with If your family has savings a setback is

and collectively bargain, many of the bill’s provisions could be negotiated directly, rendering most of the language in the SCORE Act unnecessary

The National Urban League is open to thoughtful efforts to strengthen college sports, including potential updates to the Sports Broadcasting Act but we have not taken a position yet That being said, incremental progress alone is not enough Meaningful

still painful but it is less likely to become a crisis If your family does not, one loan payment can throw off the rent the groceries the child care or the car note That is why apprenticeships make so much sense

They let people build skill and income at the same time They let people move forward without first mortgaging their future

Of course apprenticeships are not perfect They have to be funded well Employers have to take them seriously Programs have to help people finish But those are problems worth solving They are better problems than telling another generation of young people to borrow first and hope it works out later

Student debt has left too many Americans stuck Apprenticeships offer a better road Illinois has started down it Maryland is showing how much farther states can go The rest of the country should be paying attention

Ben Jealous is a professor of practice at the University of Pennsylvania and former president and CEO of the NAACP

reforms must ensure equitable revenue sharing reject unwarranted antitrust exemptions, provide substantive representation, and directly support smaller programs and institutions including Title IX programs and HBCUs Anything less is unacceptable

With the chaos and confusion surrounding the United States’ self-inflicted war with Iran our NATO allies are experiencing America’s leadership void firsthand The direct U S and Israeli military operation against Iran has severely strained the relationships with our closest European allies leading to a major decline in confidence in American leadership

The erosion of trust comes from the lack of diplomatic consultation resulting from our nation s America First policy which consistently ignores input from our allies Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz has severely disrupted global energy supplies and is economically impacting European and Asian allies with higher energy prices It shows that Americans here at home are not alone in suffering from the results of the Trump administration’s recklessness and arrogance Our allies, who express concerns about the stability of U S leadership, would not be wrong to question how a presidential candidate with a long list of documented moral ethical and legal failings managed to maintain political support from millions of voters It didn t matter to voters that each of the failings was a red flag representing clear evidence that he is unfit to become the most powerful person in the world When it comes to shielding the nation and world from Donald Trump’s domestic and foreign policy volatility, the Republican-led Congress, the Republican-led Supreme Court and the MAGA movement have let the nation and world down On the world stage, our allies can no longer trust the actions and motives coming from this White House At one time, the Republican Party was the party of foreign affairs and fiscal responsibility Steve Schmidt is best known as a co-founder of the Lincoln Project It was founded in 2019 in opposition to Donald Trump and his leadership of the Republican Party and has earned him the wrath of MAGA He was an establishment Republican who worked on political campaigns for President George Bush and Sen John McCain during his 2008 presidential campaign He is now a Never Trump Republican who has broken with the Republican Party Thanks to Republicans Schmidt said the nation no longer has the system of checks and balances envisioned by the country s founders A system with checks and balances and a separation of powers and a separation between church and state in the country is foundational to who we are, to what we are,” said Schmidt There are not enough Republicans like Schmidt who understand the times we are living in, both domestically and

globally I do not agree with Schmidt politically on many things, but I do appreciate his willingness to speak out to confront fascism and the billionaire class This is important because every Senate and Congressional election directly and indirectly impacts the nation and world Every Republican lawmaker knows the threat that Trump poses What Schmidt has been able to do is highlight the contrast between Republicans who are true Americans, with courage, and Republicans who have placed the goals of their party over the needs of the nation by refusing to restrain President Trump s aggressive power grabs even when they are done without Congressional approval “It’s an age of epic cowardice of selfishness of greed, Schmidt told Left Hook podcaster Wajahat Ali in reference to members of his former party “These are despicable villainous people and I think the High Court of History is going to judge them very, very harshly

The world is watching, and the High Court of History will judge Democrats as well, because there are many forms of checks and balances

There is a critical U S Senate race in Texas and the Black vote can ultimately determine the outcome A May runoff between U S Sen John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton will determine the Republican candidate The winner is favored to win in November The Democratic nominee is James Talarico, the Texas state representative who defeated U S Rep Jasmine Crockett While a coalition of white collegeeducated Democrats and Latino voters helped propel Talarico over Crockett Talarico will need the support of Black voters if there is any chance of winning in November

That may not be easy

Some of Crockett s supporters took offense to the notion that a white state representative was more electable than a Black congresswoman, as rooted in racism and sexism Dallas Jones, a Texas Democratic strategist, believes Talarico doesn t need an overwhelming surge of support from Black voters but he does need to make sure they don’t stay home

There is a balance to be maintained to keep the powerful Black vote energized, because voting and politics are based on relationships On one side, the Black vote in Texas must be earned regardless of the candidate It should never be taken for granted; therefore, Talarico should sincerely work to earn the trust and support of the Black community

On the other hand, the Black vote must be consistent grounded in justice and compassion Black voters in Texas are in a position to serve as the moral checks and balances the nation and the world need

When Steve Schmidt refers to cowardice, despicable, villainous people, those people have names Their names are John Cornyn and Ken Paxton

Senate Sketches #2025.....by Hank Sander s Ever y Issue is a Voting Issue II

Every issue is a voting issue In a democracy Voting impacts every aspect of our lives Voting is powerful in many ways I want to share my experiences and understanding concerning the power of voting Every issue is a voting issue II There are many ways to recognize the power of something One way is by how much we want and pursue it A second way is how much others try to stop us from having it A third way is by the way it impacts our individual and collective lives I want to explore all three of these ways of recognizing the power and reach of our votes Every issue is a voting issue II I helped fight to secure voting rights I helped fight to end segregation I often wondered why the United States of America enacted laws that ruled segregation a deeply embedded way of life as unlawful before the nation enacted laws providing for the universal right to vote for American citizens That law prohibiting segregation was enacted in the 1964 Civil Rights Act Yet the right to vote was not enacted until after the Civil Rights Act Every issue is a voting issue II I write this Sketches as we memorialize Dr Martin Luther King, Jr on his April 4th death date In 1957 during the National Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D C Dr King stated the reasons for denial of the vote to Black people in a speech entitled Give US the Ballot Some of what he said as follows: (1) Give us the ballot and we will place judges on the benches of the South who will do justly and love mercy and we will place at the head of Southern states governors who have felt not only the tang of the human but the glow of the Divine; (2) Give us the ballot and we will no longer plead to the federal government for passage of an anti-lynching law; we will by the power of our vote write the law on the statue books of the South and bring an end to the dastardly acts of the hooded perpetrators of violence; and (3) Give us the ballot and we will quietly and nonviolently without rancor or bitterness implement the Supreme Court’s decision of May 17, 1954; (4) Give us the ballot because so long as we do not firmly and irrevocably possess the right to vote we do not possess ourselves ” Dr King understood profoundly and publicly declared the power of the vote Every issue is a voting issue II If I had heard or read Dr King s 1957 Give us the Ballot speech, I would not have wondered in late 1964 and early 1965 why the 1964 Civil Rights Act was enacted before an effective Voting Rights Act Dr King told us the power of the Vote in graphic terms and what it would do Every issue is a voting issue II White Supremacists were so determined that Black people would not possess the right to vote that they overrode two Amendments to the U S Constitution Constitution amendments are the high-

est and most powerful laws Each provided the right to vote The first was the 15th Amendment ratified on February 3, 1870 The second was the 19thAmendment to the Constitution ratified on August 18, 1920, The 15th Amendment provided, The right of citizens to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude The 19th Amendment provided, The right of citizens to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex ” Every issue is a voting issue II White Supremacists and others in Southern states of the United States still denied Black men the right to vote after the 15th Amendment was enacted They also denied Black women the right to vote after the 19th Amendment was enacted This was accomplished by outright fraud and widespread violence sanctioned by local, state and federal governments Every issue is a voting issue II n a democracy voting impacts everything in our lives from the air we breathe to the water we drink to the food we eat to conception to birth to family to health to education to work to religion to poverty to wealth to war to peace to death to burial to disposition of property after death Everything! Every issue is a voting issue II When I left Montgomery, Alabama on March 25, 1965, at the end of the Selma to Montgomery March I was convinced that the right to vote for Black people would soon come and it would be here forever That feeling was intensified by Dr King’s ringing words during his speech: How long? Not long! The 1965 Voting Rights Act was signed into law by President Lyndon Baines Johnson on August 6 1965 I just knew that voting rights for Black people were finally here and would be ensured forever alongside that of other peoples Every issue is a voting issue II Now here we are more than sixty years later and we are still engaged in mighty struggles to save voting rights for most people in the United States of America, not just Black people The current President of the United States wants us to produce an original birth certificate or a passport each time we vote or register to vote He says we need to prove we are citizens I have never seen my original birth certificate I was born in a house without a doctor or medical personnel through the assistance of women in my family and neighborhood I now have a passport but I know that most people, especially low income people, do not have passports, which cost more than $200 to secure one reasonably fast In addition the President wants to nationalize elections In my opinion nationalizing elections will be nationalizing mass fraud Every issue is a voting issue II

The United States is currently engaged in a war with Iran that is resulting in

many deaths (including many children) mass dislocations fear pain suffering rising prices and great costs The U S Constitution provides that only Congress has the authority to declare war, but the President of the U S joined with the President of Israel and started this war without a vote of those elected with the constitutional authority to declare war Too many of us voted for this President Every issue is a voting issue II

If those of us who did not vote had voted, we would not be in this war If more of us had voted with people in mind rather than our fears and prejudices we would not be in this war If more of us truly understood that every issue is a voting issue, we would not be struggling to save this imperfect democracy

The United States would not have bombed eight countries in the last 12 months It may not be too late because we still may be able to vote one more time I pray that we remember that our votes impact every single thing Our Votes are our Voices Every issue is a voting issue II

EarthTalk® From the Editors of EThe Environmental Magazine

Dear EarthTalk: What are some innovative ways to get more fresh food fruits and veggies to low income people?

-- Paul Towner, Boston, MA

Across the U S communities are facing a growing problem a lack of healthy, fresh food With the price of fruits and veggies shooting up 40 percent since 1980 and the price of processed foods going down 20-30 percent many families find buying processed foods the

only sensible economic decision Now with the Centers of Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reporting that only one in 10 adults eats enough fruits and vegetables, expanding access to low-income communities is more important than ever before Voucher incentive programs, which provide coupons, vouchers and financial incentives to lowincome individuals offer a viable solution The New

Pope Leo XIV

York City Health Department for example introduced the $2 NYC Health Bucks coupons in 2004, which gave SNAP recipients $2 to purchase fresh produce for every $5 they spend at a farmers market By reducing the financial barrier to purchasing fresh produce these programs allow consumers to choose healthier food options without sacrificing affordability

Similarly Produce Pre-

According to a detailed report by the Free Press, on Easter Sunday, while Trump was threatening to bomb Iran’s bridges and power plants and unleash “Hell” on the nation Leo XIV born Robert Francis Prevost delivered his State of the World speech during which he urged world leaders to lay down their weapons, choose peace and relieve themselves of the desire to dominate other The global leader of the Catholic Church also condemned “the imperialist occupation of the world” and warned that God rejects the prayers “of those who wage war” which seems to be a direct rebuke of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth who has been hosting a monthly Christian worship service at the Pentagon since the Iran war began, and has been praying to his god that every round find its mark against the enemies of righteousness and our great nation ”

So, according to the Free Press, Leo’s speech angered some officials at the Pentagon, resulting in Cardinal Christophe Pierre the Vatican’s U S representative being summoned to a closed-door Pentagon meeting, where he received a stern lecture from Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby, who reportedly told Pierre: The United States has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world The Catholic Church had better take its side ”

Besides the fact that these so-called Christian leaders of a so-called Christian nation are out here threatening to unleash the U S military on the world s highest authority on all things Christ, just because the pope said things that are Christ-like, we really should be more concerned that Trump officials keep boasting about how they can do anything they want because they have the most powerful military

Remember when Trump was talking about running Venezuela and taking over Greenland, and White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller defended those remarks by beating his little bird chest and declaring, “We are in charge because we have the United States military stationed outside the country ” and “we’re a superpower and under President Trump we are going to conduct ourselves as a superpower” as if he himself had ever served even a day in the U S mlitary MAGA minions keep defending the Trump administration against allegations that it s an authoritarian regime, and the administration just keeps undermining that defense by vocally vindicating its accusers

The truth is that Trump and his band of stooges who have been given way more power than incompetent, imbecilic sycophants like them should ever have have been scrambling and struggling to control the narrative around which side is “winning” regarding the conflict in Iran, and they’ve been getting increasingly frustrated with endless criticism both globally and domestically and the growing consensus that this war and the administration s lack of competent leadership makes the nation look weak

Trump is even out here threatening news outlets for reporting statements of victory made by Iranian leadership that have also been reported by Iranian media, which brings us to a reminder that the Pentagon recently tried to ban every mainstream news outlet from reporting on it after all of those outlets refused to bend to its new policy that reporters cannot obtain or solicit any information that hasn t been pre-approved by the Department of Defense Thankfully, a federal judge stepped in and essentially told Hegseth and other Pentagon officials that they were out of their freedom-of-the-press-defying minds

Inflation

According to NBC News inflation rose to 3 3% in March up 0 9% from the month before Gas prices increased by 21 2%, their largest single-month increase since 1967 I gotta be honest, folks, I’m getting real tired of living through historically bad economic changes While a ceasefire was declared last Tuesday, there hasn’t been a meaningful drop in gas prices Anecdotally speaking I’ve seen gas prices drop a whopping 10 cents from $4 99 to $4 89 in Arizona

The misguided Iran war has created a series of headaches for the Trump administration Trump ran on lowering prices an AP reports that there are growing concerns that if gas prices continue to stay so high it would have dramatic downwind consequences for the American economy There was already a cost-of-living crisis before the Iran war and the inflated gas prices could result in families struggling to afford other necessities, such as rent Once the essentials become a struggle to afford, it would slow spending in other sectors, slowing the economy and potentially leading to further unemployment

“It’s painful in the near term ” Michael Pearce chief U S economist at Oxford Economics told AP It s going to get more painful in April as a result of further gas price increases lifting inflation even higher AP reports that there are growing concerns that if gas prices continue to stay so high, it would have dramatic downwind consequences for the American economy There was already a cost-of-living crisis before the Iran war and the inflated gas prices could result in families struggling to afford other necessities, such as rent Once the essentials become a struggle to afford, it would slow spending in other sectors, slowing the economy and potentially leading to further unemployment

From AP: Consumer sentiment plunged to a record low in April according to a survey released Friday by the University of Michigan largely because of the Iran war and concerns over higher gas prices Their Index of Consumer Sentiment fell to 47 6, from 53 3 in March

“Many consumers blame the Iran conflict for unfavorable changes to the economy,” said Joanne Hsu the university’s director of consumer surveys

High prices had angered American voters before the war and the spike in prices for oil and everything that entails, from the pump to the grocery store, could make it more difficult for the president’s party to hold on to seats in both the House and the Senate in next year ’s midterms

Polling by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research last month found that about six in 10 Republicans are at least somewhat concerned about affording gas in the next few months

Another point of concern regards the Strait of Hormuz, which has become a focal point in the conflict While ships were able to flow freely through the Strait of Hormuz before the war Iran has locked down access and is considering charging a toll for entry This would obviously lead to a permanent increase in prices, as that cost would definitely be passed down to the consumer

One of the downwind effects of the Strait’s closure is rising food prices While food costs remained relatively neutral throughout March much of the world’s fertilizer supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz Should Iran and the U S fail to agree on a permanent ceasefire resolution, it would likely lead to food scarcity, which would obviously increase prices Those increases would also be compounded by rising fuel costs, as the nation’s food supply is largely transported via diesel trucks

scription programs expand accessible access to fresh foods through a health care pipeline: Health care workers like physicians and nurse practitioners can prescribe fruits and vegetables to patients with chronic diseases or a lack of access to nutritious food Fresh Prescription a Produce Prescription program implemented in Detroit, found significant decreases in hemoglobin H1c for its participants signifying a lower risk of diabetes complications and better heart health

These programs have proved successful in improving both access to fresh food options and the quality of people’s diets According to Fresh Approach an organization that provides Veggie Rx service a Produce Prescription Program in the San Francisco Bay Area, 89 percent of participants reported eating more vegetables since the program began “With eight people in our family I ve

had to really watch what I spend money on so I do a lot of coupon clipping, but you don’t find coupons for fruits and vegetables ” reports Bethany Thompson a VeggieRx client The VeggieRx program has been absolutely great because it helps me to actually afford the healthy food that I want to feed all my kids

However, America’s food and nutrition insecurity crisis is far from over Organizations still face inconsistent funding, limiting the amount of people they can directly assist

Consumers can support these programs by donating to partner organizations and telling others how to get involved Together the community can help expand access to nutritious food for everyone, by everyone C O N

It serves markets such as China where enthusiasts have paid large sums to maintain ant colonies in large transparent vessels known as formicariums that allow them to study the species’ complex social structures and behaviors

Chinese national Zhang Kequn was arrested last month at Nairobi’s main international airport with more than 2,200 live garden ants in his luggage

Zhang s lawyer said he would appeal against his sentence

He initially pleaded not guilty to charges including dealing in live wildlife species but later changed his plea to guilty

Noting the increasing and rising cases of dealing in large quantities of garden ants and the negative ecological side effects of massive harvesting there is a need for a stiff deterrent ” magistrate Irene Gichobi said

A Kenyan man Charles Mwangi was also charged in the case accused of supplying the ants to Zhang Mwangi has pleaded not guilty and is out on bail His case was not before the court on Wednesday

Last year, four men were fined 1 million shillings each for trying to traffic thousands of ants Wildlife experts said at the time that the case signaled a shift in biopiracy from trophies like elephant ivory to lesser-known species

NAACP

The call, coming from the NAACP, Democratic members of Congress, activists and other political observers, has grown louder since Trump, joining with Israel, waged war against Iran – with no declaration of war by Congress

In addition to concerns about Trump s history of what appears to be pathological lying talk of the use of the 25th Amendment especially hit the fan on Easter Sunday morning April 6 That was when Trump posted a profanity-laced threat to Iran on the day that is considered among the highest and holiest days on the Christian calendar as people prepared to worship in commemoration of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ

With all curse words spelled completely out, Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform, Open the F***in’ Strait, you crazy b*****ds, or you’ll be living in Hell JUST WATCH Praise be to Allah

He was demanding that Iran open the Strait of Hormuz, which is a primary passageway for about 20 percent of the global oil supply according to the New York Times

The next day he threatened all of Iran – even innocent citizens – if there was no deal by 8 pm: "A whole civilization will die tonight never to be brought back again I don’t want that to happen but it probably will " he wrote on Truth Social

The NAACP responded Monday with an emailed note to its members, signed by its president/CEO Derrick Johnson:

“The stability of our nation is hanging in the balance,” Johnson wrote “In recent weeks, we have witnessed alarming signs of President Trump s deteriorating health and increasingly delusional behavior The rhetoric and actions coming from the highest office in the land have reached a level of instability that we cannot ignore His behavior is not only alarming but dangerous

The NAACP email continued “This is no longer just a matter of political disagreement It’s a grave national security crisis A leader unable to think clearly or act decisively jeopardizes our military readiness erodes public trust and threatens the safety of millions of Americans We cannot wait for further chaos We must protect the fabric of our democracy right now ”

The organization then listed three demands: Invoke the 25th Amendment: The Vice President and the Cabinet must step forward immediately to ensure the continuity of governance

Remove the threat: We must address this presidential incapacity to protect our nation from further uncertainty ” Congressional action: “Once the Vice President and the Cabinet step up Congress must follow through and act with the urgency this situation demands to uphold the principles of our Constitution ”

Section 4 of the Constitution’s 25th Amendment states as follows:

“Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President

“Thereafter when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office

Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session If the Congress within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration or if Congress is not in session within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office ”

It is not likely that there would be enough will to remove Trump from office given the dedication that the Republican majorities have maintained toward him Besides, this week, Congress remained on Easter recess and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has not criticized Trump s conduct nor his war with Iran The primary criticism is coming from Democrats

Still the NAACP is adamant about what it feels must be done:

“There’s no sugarcoating it,” Johnson concluded in his email “President Trump has shown himself to be unfit, unwell, and unhinged Together, we can force our leaders to prioritize the health and safety of our nation before it’s too late

Cong r esswoman Ter ri Sewell visits W hitfied Re gional

In observance of National Public Health Week U S Rep Terri Sewell (AL-07) convened a Rural Health Roundtable at Whitfield Regional Hospital in Demopolis bringing together hospital administrators, clinicians, and health system leaders from across Alabama's 7th Congressional District to discuss the mounting pressures facing rural health care providers pressures intensified by recent federal cuts to key health care programs Among those in attendance were Whitfield Regional Hospital CEO Doug Brewer Greene County Health System CEO Rodgerick Williams, J Paul Jones Rural Emergency Hospital CEO Jessica McGraw, Hill Hospital Rural Health Clinic Manager Darla Spencer, Grove Hill Hospital CEO Allen Jor-

dan, DCH Health System

CEO Katrina Keefer Hale County Hospital CEO Shay Cherry, and Rural Health Medical Program

CEO Keshee Dozier-Smith

The discussion underscored the growing strain on rural hospitals, many of which are operating on razor-thin margins while serving aging populations large geographic areas, and communities with limited access to specialty care Participants detailed challenges ranging from workforce shortages and rising operating costs to the threat of service reductions or closures if federal support continues to erode Rural hospitals are on the front lines in caring for our most vulnerable Alabamians ” said Rep Sewell When federal funding is cut, it s not just numbers on a spreadsheet It’s maternity wards clos-

ing, emergency rooms understaffed and families forced to drive hours for basic care I m fighting to make sure our rural providers have the resources they need to stay open and serve every patient who walks through their doors ”

During the roundtable, Rep Sewell highlighted two pieces of legislation she is leading to strengthen rural health care infrastructure and expand access to care:

The Save Struggling Hospitals Act would fix Medicare payment formulas that do not account for the cost pressures facing hospitals in rural and lower-wage areas

The Maternal Vaccination Act would protect the health of mothers and babies by increasing maternal and childhood vaccination rates

On Wednesday morning, Sewell also visited DaVita Kidney Care in Demopolis where she spoke with patients and providers about the importance of preserving the accessibility of dialysis services in rural Alabama Sewell will continue working with local providers state partners and national rural health organizations to advance solutions that protect access to care for rural families On Wednesday Congresswoman Terri Sewell met at Whitfield Regional with administrators and CEOs from five area hospitals to have meaningful discussions about the challenges facing healthcare in our communities We appreciate her continued support and commitment to improving access to quality care across our region
