A note from the Publishers If you find yourself wondering how this year could be more than half over already, you’re not alone.

As a monthly publication manned by a small team, it’s difficult for us to respond to the latest news in real time. Instead, we put a lot of planning into our stories. Most are scheduled months in advance and submitted weeks before we go to print. Sometimes, though, what we have planned becomes relevant in ways we couldn’t imagine.

This issue features holocaust survivor, volunteer, and philanthropist, Lisl Schick (pg. 9). We also dive into the history of the founding Jewish community here in St. Pete (pg. 6). As these articles were wrapping up, the Florida Holocaust Museum was vandalized with a painted swastika. At the time of publication, the St. Petersburg Police Department is still investigating this hate crime. It illustrates how important Lisl’s story and the work of the Florida Holocaust Museum are, then, and especially now. We hope you take a moment to read, get inspired, and maybe even share these stories with a friend or neighbor.

Remembering St. Pete’s Founding Jewish Community

By Tina Stewart Brakebill In 1763, England took control of the Florida territory and ended the ban on non-Roman Catholic settlement. In the following decades, Florida’s Jewish population expanded, albeit very slowly. By 1820, only about 30 to 40 Jewish people lived in Florida. In 1845, when Florida achieved statehood, there were fewer than 100 Jewish people out of a population of 66,500.

By 1928, however, that number had jumped to 10,000 as Jewish peoples found ways in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to establish tight-knit communities within predominantly Christian regions.

Establishing Early Foundations in Tampa Bay In 1842, the Seminole peoples relocated to a reservation in southwest Florida at the conclusion of the Second Seminole War. That same year, the U.S. government began to offer land incentives to bring in white settlement.

Tampa’s first Jewish settlers arrived during this transitional period. They were followed by a steady stream of new arrivals, and by the 1890s, these

early families had grown into a thriving community made up of mostly merchants and restaurateurs.

St. Petersburg was a different story. Its isolated and limited population (300 people in the 1890s) offered little incentive for Tampa merchants to relocate. Not until after 1900, when St. Petersburg could boast 1,500 residents, did the town have its first documented Jewish settler: Henry Schutz.

St Pete’s First Jewish Family Born in Germany, Schutz immigrated to the United States in approximately 1883. After honing his business skills in Savannah, Ga., he moved to St. Pete in 1901, where he opened a dry-goods store on Central Avenue. By all accounts, he was well-liked and successful, even as antisemitism affected other Florida Jewish communities. For example, in 1910, when Schutz returned to town as a married man, the St. Petersburg Times ran a lengthy article describing the ceremony and the bride’s “light blue taffeta gown.” The paper also noted, “When Mr. Henry Schutz, one of our popular merchants, left this town a few weeks ago on a trip north, none of our citizens suspected that he was intending to marry while away. He returned home Monday night accompanied by his bride of a few days, formerly Miss Emma Fleischman of Baltimore. Mrs. Schutz, who is a strikingly handsome brunette, came from Germany just eighteen months ago.”

Even during the height of pronounced World War I-era anti-German sentiment, Schutz’s store remained popular, no doubt helped by his public displays of patriotism. “Henry Schutz gave his window to the Liberty Loan cause,” the Times noted. “A miniature Statue of Liberty, together with a collection of posters and flags, drew particular attention to this patriotic appeal.” Still popular, Schutz sold his Central Avenue dry-goods store to the Woolworth company in 1929 with a plan for a new venture.

He died before he could launch it, but in 1930 his widow joined her niece as proprietors of Schutz, Inc. offering “Clothes of Character for Women.”

The Community Slowly Grows Amidst Struggles to Keep Their Identity As Henry and Emma Schutz established roots, other Jewish families eventually joined them and established themselves as insurance agents and locksmiths as well as purveyors of gas, clothing, and dry goods.

Olga and Leon Manket were the first of these new arrivals. Emigrating from Poland to New York City in 1907, they relocated to St. Pete in 1908.

College-educated and a working pharmacist in Poland, Olga Manket never obtained her license in the United States. Instead, the couple opened a dry-goods store on Central Avenue. In 1914, their daughter, Anne, became the first Jewish child born in Pinellas County. As Jewish families expanded, the struggles to keep their identity intensified. Most of the children attended the local public school, where Christian prayers were common. With no kosher vendors in St. Pete and no bridge between Tampa and St. Pete, getting kosher food also was difficult. Tampa was the site of the closest chartered congregation, consecrated cemetery, and educational facilities. The families made do the best they could. They organized a part-time religious school, arranged for a rabbi to travel by boat to teach their children and hold prayer services, and traveled to Tampa for High Holidays. By 1923, the community had grown to 12 families, who chartered their own congregation, B’nai Israel, further cementing their commitment to the community.

A Rise in Antisemitism The 1920s brought other exciting developments to St. Pete including a land boom, expanding city borders, and an exploding population.

The town was not immune to a particularly ugly and expanding brand of so-called national “patriotism” that demanded an all-white, nativeborn Christian America. This attitude contributed to rising antisemitism nationally and locally. For example, the secretary of St. Pete’s Chamber of Commerce publicly called for a “one hundred percent American and gentile city.” Property deeds included restrictive covenants that stated they were “not to be sold to Jews.” Many of the area’s hotels and clubs instituted policies to ban Jewish people, and it was common to see signs at resorts and restaurants reading “Gentiles Only.” A series of signs along Gandy Boulevard and 4th Street North delivered this blunt message: “No Jews Wanted Here.” Despite the challenges of the times, however, most of St. Petersburg’s first Jewish families chose to stay. Their presence provided a strong foundation for future generations and newly arriving immigrants.

believed in her 10-year-old heart that things would be okay. The violent horror of Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) demonstrated the true nature of their reality, especially when her father, Paul Porges, admitted that there was “nothing he could do.” One month later, their growing fear led them to make the inconceivably difficult decision to separate the family and send young Lisl and her younger brother Walter in hopes of safe-keeping as part of the Kindertransport program. A few months later, the two children boarded a train to Great Britain, one of the only places willing to take Jewish youngsters as long as no parents or adults joined them. It would take seven years and an ocean crossing before the family was reunited. Still, Lisl Schick says, she considers herself “lucky.”

The vast majority of Kindertransport’s 10,000 Jewish refugee children never again saw their families.

By Tina Stewart Brakebill St. Pete is celebrated for its fabulous weather, beautiful vistas, world-class food scene, and thriving cultural atmosphere but the people of St. Pete truly make this city something special. In appreciation, each month Green Bench shines a light on one of the many people who make St. Pete unique.

Driven from her home after the Nazis annexed Austria, Lisl Schick considers herself to be lucky to have survived so she could live a bountiful life. The proud mother of four children, 14 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren has spent much of her life as a volunteer.

She and her late husband, Dr. Alfred Schick, a board-certified radiologist, arrived in Pinellas County in 1959. They established a home and immediately became active in many civic and philanthropic organizations. After her husband’s death in 1993, Schick continued her volunteer work, and St. Pete has benefited greatly, in particular from her devotion to the Florida Holocaust Museum.

Overnight Everything Changed Born in 1927, young Lisl Porges and her extended family lived a happy life in Vienna until the Nazis arrived in March 1938.

Overnight, her world changed. For months, she endured hateful taunts and threats of violence at school and in public as Austrian Jews lost their citizenship, jobs, and homes. Some lost their lives. Even so, she

A New Life in the United States As the war drew to a close in early 1945, the Porges family finally reunited in New York City. The following 50 years were filled with moments Lisl Schick frequently describes as “lucky.” A chance meeting between her mother, Charlotte Porges, and a childhood friend on a New York City street eventually led Lisl to meet the man she would marry. Over the next 40 years, they established a happy life that gave them four children and brought them to Tampa Bay, where Lisl Schick would embark on a volunteer path that has culminated in many honors including being named WEDU- PBS’ Volunteer of the Year in 2016 and Tampa Bay’s Most Remarkable Woman in March of 2021 by WFLA-TV Ch. 8. An avid Tampa Bay Rays fan, Schick was thrilled to throw out the first pitch at the sold-out July 4, 2019, game against the New York Yankees, which yielded a $10,000 donation to one her most passionate causes: the Florida Holocaust Museum.

Lisl and the Florida Holocaust Museum Founded in the early 1990s, the mission of the Florida Holocaust Museum (FHM) is to teach “members of all races and cultures the inherent worth and dignity of human life in order to prevent future genocides.” Considered a founding member, Schick has served on its board since its beginnings and has been on the “frontline of making sure that the museum and its mission will endure.” According to Elizabeth Gelman, FHM’s executive director, Schick has helped raise a substantial amount of money. Every week, for many years, Schick volunteers to speak to young people about her childhood experiences as a survivor, continuing even through the COVID-19 pandemic by embracing virtual technology. Believing that children have to be taught to hate, she hopes to personalize the consequences of racism and hate for students as a way to inspire empathy and discourage bullying. Forward-looking and outwardly focused, Schick says she has great confidence in the next generation. As a survivor, she knows she has made it her mission to inspire others to believe they also can rise above anything.

Determination, creativity, and hard-work ethic That enthusiasm is evident to anyone who steps inside their beautiful shop on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N. Williams and her partner and co-owner, Taylor Waldmann, have the background and love of craft that create a true dream team in the vintage world. “I have a fine art degree, and Taylor developed his carpentry doing custom home remodeling for almost 20 years,” Williams says. “Those skills in art, design, and construction are applied to collecting, restoring, and building furniture.”

“The recent pandemic gave me time to reflect on my career as a high school art teacher,” she says. “The question was: Is it as rewarding as it was when I first started 12 years ago? And can I do it for another 20 years? If the answer was no, the next question was: Could I combine my part-time gig of selling vintage furnishings, and with Taylor’s already established custom furniture-making business, and make it a full-time

business that could support the two of us? We decided to bank on our determination, creativity, hard-work ethic, and stubbornness. With many long late-night discussions, we felt we could offer something unique by combining the two: custom and vintage, with the approach of offering responsible, sustained home furnishings.”

Old made new How does custom work fit into the vintage field? “Our custom furniture is always about giving a client a well-made piece that is going to last generations, using sustainably sourced wood,” Williams says. “Our pieces are made from lumber that was previously a different piece of furniture (old wood is often a higher quality), or it is new rough-cut lumber that is milled from trees that would have been destroyed from development or storms.” (Old-growth trees produce higher-quality wood.)

“So much of the furniture made today is made of inferior materials,” she says, “with building techniques that do not stand up to daily use. It will end up in the landfill in a couple of years. Older furniture has already lasted a generation or two and is still standing stronger. I recently had a customer tell me she can’t buy nice furniture right now because she has kids. I responded, ‘This furniture has already outlasted a family or two and still looks beautiful. Don’t underestimate vintage furniture!”

A cut above the rest “We are the only furniture store in the area that offers both vintage and custom-built furniture and can combine the two,” she says. “We offer our customers this: If you have inherited a piece that is not quite your style, or maybe it does not function or fit in your space, we can make it into something that will work for you. Black Crow Coffee Co: Creativity

Black Crow is back, baby! Black Crow Coffee Co’s shops, one in Old Northeast and the other in Grand Central, are both in full swing. Indoor seating has reopened, and art and music events are making a triumphant return. “One thing I realized when we were closed is we are so much more than just a cup of coffee,” says Deana Hawk, who owns Black Crow with her partner, Greg Bauman. Black Crow has a cozy, casual, cool ambiance and a strong sense of community that begets years of passion, care, and commitment.

Before Black Crow, Deana worked in hair and makeup. She was on a shoot, driving around with a model and photographer, when she saw the lease sign on the building that is now their Old Northeast shop. “I ran home and told my partner Greg (who owns Indian Shores coffee) that I found the perfect place for a new coffee shop.” Seven years later, the shop and its second location in Grand Central are as strong as ever.

Of the great Black Crow ambiance, Deana says, “Being from Black Crow Coffee Co co-owners, Toronto and Seattle, Greg and I both Greg Bauman & Deana Hawk grew up with unique, comfortable coffee shops. I don’t know how to do a black & white space, it doesn’t resonate. When we did the decor, half the stuff came from our house.

Organically that foundation set the tone for both of our shops. The rest developed with the creative freedom we gave to our staff and customers.”

We have changed, adapted, and we are stronger for it. We want to express overwhelming gratitude to our community and city leaders for their support.”

While things are getting back to normal at Black Crow, they are still serving everything in to-go cups and are keeping their extra sanitary measures in place. Importantly, their monthly events are BACK! Their Art Night is the first Saturday of every month, and features live music.

Beau & Mo’s Chicago Style Steakhouse: Livin’ the American Dream

By Tina Stewart Brakebill In 2015, Beau and Madonna (Mo) Wallace opened the doors to their new restaurant at 2924 Fifth Ave. N. Beginning as an Italian-only venue, Beau & Mo’s soon added steaks, and the combination of Italian fare and Chicago-style steaks was a winner.

Finding Their Florida Home Looking back, the concept makes perfect sense. Originally from Chicago, Beau and Mo both grew up around the food. Madonna was working at a pizza place by the time she was 12, and Beau was learning to cook at the side of his Sicilian grandmother. As a couple, they were successful owners/operators of numerous Italian and steakhouse restaurants in the Chicago area. When they got an offer to re-concept a restaurant and hotel in Marathon, Madonna said, they were looking to make a change (and maybe escape those Chicago winters. They “jumped off the bridge,” she said, sold almost everything, and arrived at Mile Marker 52 with their remaining belongings in a U-Haul, eager to get started. The deal didn’t work out, but they decided to remain in Florida and searched for another opportunity.

Soon after, they saw an advertisement for an available restaurant space in the Kenwood neighborhood. One visit convinced them that this could be their new home.

are always cooked to perfection and Chef Beau still uses his Sicilian grandmother’s recipes for the Italian dishes, which are prepared with the freshest ingredients from scratch. The food is delicious, and the welcoming ambience and people keep customers coming back. Nick (St. Pete’s “most beloved waiter” according to Madonna!) will be out front serving and entertaining regulars and newcomers with his charm. And don’t be surprised if Madonna stops by the table to say hello.

When talk turns to hurricanes, as it often does in Florida, invariably someone will tell the story of eating at Beau & Mo’s patio dining room (i.e., parking lot) after the restaurant and most of Kenwood lost power for nearly a week after Irma in 2017. That same sense of community support also prevailed during the past year as friends and neighbors ordered takeout until they could return to in-person dining in the beautifully redecorated interior or the new and charming outdoor dining space.

Some Fun & Important Facts Beau & Mo’s repeatedly has been voted the area’s Best Steakhouse and Best Italian Restaurant. The restaurant is the St. Petersburg Foodies Awards 2021 recipient for Best Steakhouse, Best Overall Restaurant, and Best Upscale Restaurant. Honey I Smoked the Fish

By Angelica, @Baybeswhobrunch Who else is o-fish-ally excited for summer?! Puns aside, we’re switching it up this month in order to properly get into the spirit of the season. Since barbecues, pool parties, and beach days are beginning to make a reappearance, not only am I going to hook you up with the best spots around town to pick up fish spread, but I’m also going to include Baybeswhobrunch Dad’s famous recipe because y’all know better than to show up to a party empty-handed!

First, we start out on Redington Beach at Nachman’s Seafood Market and Smokehouse. Step inside a cute little market filled with fresh and smoked filets, as well as some fun specialty marinades, wine, and don’t forget… a case filled with smoked fish spread. This spread is distinctive from some of the others as it has a more mild flavor for those that aren’t huge on too much smoke. It pairs great with a refreshing side of sliced veggies (cucumber, carrot, and bell pepper are our favs).

A little ways down the beach is our next stop, Dockside Dave’s in Madeira. This spot is most famously known for a little sandwich (which I must stay mums the word on because it may or may not be showing up on a future list!) However, they also serve a killer fish spread! I love that this one comes with pepperoncini which bring just enough heat and the cutest presentation on a fish-shaped plate that I may or may not have wanted to bring home.

Next, we pop over to Pasadena to a local institution that has been smoking fish and making some bomb German potato salad since 1951.

This is the spot that if you’re from the Burg, your parents and their parents probably also frequented. There’s something just synonymous with Ted Peters and fish spread. This spread brings the smoke, but also a yummy pickled flavor from the relish in the recipe. If you don’t believe me, they also were featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

We head from there down to the Grand Central District to a sippin’ spot nestled in the Clusia hedges - Trophy Fish. This spread is unique in that it has a heartier texture. It’s served with pickled veg and jalapeños for a kick. While you wait for your order, don’t forget to hit up Julio at the bar for an amazing cocktail. My fav is the Salty Dawg.

Last, but not least is a new spot down in Old Southeast, Mullet’s Fish Camp and Market. This fish spread separates itself from the others in that it lets its true smoky flavor shine. This one is best served up with a dash of lemon and some Crystal hot sauce.

I told y’all I was switching it up this month, so I’ll end with our family fish spread recipe:

Baybeswhobrunch Dad’s Special Recipe *Note you can either smoke your own catch or pick up a smoked filet from Ted Peter’s or Nachmans.

1.5-2 lbs Smoked Fish (depending on desired consistency, less fish yields a chunkier spread) ½ Small Red Onion ½ Red Bell Pepper 2 Stalks Celery 2 Jalapeños ½ cup Duke’s Mayo ½ cup Wickles Relish 1 tsp Sriracha or Tabasco Juice from 1 Lemon Salt and Pepper to Taste Captains Wafers Directions: 1. Place smoked fish in a large mixing bowl and shred like pulled pork with two forks.

2. Dice the onion, red bell pepper, and celery and add to bowl.

3. Seed and dice the jalapeño and add.

4. Add the mayo, relish, lemon juice, and sriracha.

5. (For this step, put on a set of rubber gloves first.) Fold in the ingredients with your hands until combined. (This creates a heartier, chunkier spread.)

6. Salt and pepper to taste.

7. Serve with Captain’s Crackers and Tabasco.

Sunrise Sale: Pajama Party & Discount Extravaganza!

By Erin Cody Thursday, July 15th will be the 48th annual Sunrise Sale in Downtown St. Pete, and it is not to be missed! “We’re hoping that this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever, and that shoppers will embrace the quirky and fun ‘shop in your PJ’s’ theme,” says Tami Simms, president of the Downtown Business Association (DBA), who mounts the event lead by DBA board member Eileen Epright.

Pajama-rama!

That’s right, starting at 6:43 am, the early-morning super-sale in the heart of downtown is also a fantastic pajama party! The PJ theme and awesome community participation even got a mention in the New York Times a few years ago. Shoppers are encouraged, but of course not required, to wear their jammies. It makes for a wonderful atmosphere, and some businesses even have special discounts for those in their PJs. Just get there early to nab the best deals of the day!

#SunriseSale2021 The event is not only a great deal, but a unique St. Pete experience and a whole lot of fun. “The ability to support our local businesses, to get outside and do something fun - it puts a smile on your face!” Tami enthuses. “There’s also the fun of running into your neighbors and friends who are out shopping.
