The Sunshine City’s Iconic Hexagonal Sidewalks At one time, St. Petersburg was lined with over one hundred miles of hexagonal sidewalks. The creator of those iconic walkways, Hope A. Farmer, like an artist, put his signature on those sidewalks by stamping a slab with Farmer Concrete Works and the year. In 1912, City leaders favored Farmer’s hexagon blocks because it was believed the slabs would float and settle on the City’s shifting sand. Also, Farmer produced the slabs

in various colors enabling sidewalks in and around downtown to have a colorful mosaic look. Delivered by mule and wagon, the hexagon slabs were constructed with coarse concrete on the bottom, and fine, smoother mixture on the top. Farmer Concrete Works closed in 1961 and by the early 1970’s, the City began replacing the hexagon sidewalks with solid concrete slabs.

Get Your Fill of Et Cultura: Immersive Festival Returns For Its Second Year

By Mitzi Gordon The immersive Et Cultura festival returns to St. Pete for its second year November 15 through 19 with a rich buffet of film, music, art shows, and conversations aimed at fostering dialogue between the community and contributing artists.

Interactive Calendar Not sure where to start digging in? Co-creator Lea Umberger suggests looking at conversation topics in the festival’s Interactive calendar.

“Find the thing that is your favorite branch—whether that’s plantbased diets, radical schools, or future cities,” Umberger said. “We’re hoping to create these through lines, so that if you’re interested in an Interactive topic you can find a movie that coordinates with it.”

During the Interactive portion, recognized national thought leaders such as Geoffrey Canada—a pioneer and passionate advocate for education reform—will sit on panels with local leaders to explore and bring attention to St. Petersburg’s growth. The goal is to create an environment for shared learning, with both free and paid content.

“It’s definitely a lot to take in,” Umberger said. “We’re hoping the biggest thing that happens is that people discover something they didn’t know before.”

Et Cultura is a business partnership on a mission to inspire and collaborate by spotlighting innovative culture. Art exhibitions, markets, and some concerts are free during the festival, while a $75 five-day pass gets visitors into all of the ticketed music, interactive, and film events.

Discounted passes are available for $50 for students, teachers, and veterans.

Mark Stevens, an artist known locally as Aurailieus, is organizing Et Cultura’s Locally Sourced art show Nov. 16 at the Morean Center for Clay, centered on our relationship to nature. Expect to see “a lot of upcycled art from sustainable sources,” Stevens said.

Sculpture, installations, and even music instruments created from discarded electronics and other repurposed materials will be on display at Locally Sourced. The exhibit will remain open during Et Cultura’s SEEDS event, a talk about urban agriculture, renewable energy, and sustainability.

“It’s a social commentary on

environmental issues,” Stevens said.

“We’ll be featuring a lot of new artists.”

St. Pete-based photographer and designer Todd Bates adds his popular Carousel slideshow to the roster on Nov. 19, presenting highlights from One Day Tampa Bay, a 24-hour community photo project documenting the lives and light of St. Petersburg, Tampa, Clearwater, and spaces in between.

Organizers hope you’ll walk away with a greater appreciation for St. Petersburg, and the encouragement to explore new avenues for innovative thinking.

“St. Pete is this creative hotbed—so how do you really take that to the next level?” Umberger asked. “How do you keep growing from where we are now? Exploring moonshot ideas can inspire people to dream about what’s next.”

By Cristina Juska Much attention has been given to the renaissance of the arts in St. Petersburg, but the focus has mostly been on visual media, such as the colorful murals around town. However, one could argue that the performing arts are also making a striking, creative contribution to our city, and nowhere is this more apparent than at Spitfire Theater.

Since it opened just one year ago, Spitfire represents the only theater in the area dedicated 100% to the art of improvisation. Whether you are interested in improv as a spectator, or have always dreamed of trying it yourself, you can find something to love at Spitfire.

A Place to Learn This theater isn’t a place where only seasoned actors take the stage, and that’s the beauty of it. Spitfire is primarily a forum for learning. There is no permanent in-house troupe; rather, performers make their way to the stage as students of the art. This community model is based The Hideout Theatre in Austin, Texas, and as students take classes to learn the different styles of improv, they are encouraged to audition and perform in Spitfire’s various shows.

While some people may find the idea of getting up on stage without a script a little bit intimidating, Spitfire Theater has created a community in which it’s exhilarating and empowering to explore and showcase newly developing talents. In fact, the theater’s organizers believe that the most compelling theater happens when performers feel safe and comfortable in

their surroundings.

Nicholas Riggs, Spitfire’s artistic director, said: “The creativity in improv lies in feeling support from fellow players, and knowing that it’s OK to take a risk. As we say, there are no mistakes in improv, just opportunities for new ideas.”

As students take classes together, they are guided by experienced instructors through the various styles of improvisational comedy, from short improv games—think Whose Line is it, Anyway?—to long-form or narrative improv (a.k.a. Chicago style), and everything in between. While

they learn, not only do their skills and confidence grow, but so does a sense of group identity. They succeed together, and when things don’t go quite as planned, they experience that feeling together, as well.

“When they are first learning to do improv, we teach our students that it’s OK to ‘fail’ with style, pride and acceptance,” Riggs said.

For example, in the very beginning, Spitfire teaches an exercise called the “Failure Bow”, which gives students permission to take risks and find the funny moments together without the fear of failure stifling their creativity. If a scene they are working on in class “tanks”, so to speak, a student may choose to take a bow and exclaim, “I’ve failed!” Then, after the fellow students and teachers applaud the effort, they discuss what they liked about the scene, and what they could try differently next time. By celebrating these moments in class as a learning experience, Spitfire helps to build up the players’ comfort level and give them confidence when it is time to perform in front of a live audience.

In addition to learning to perform improv, students also get to play around with the stage technology, learning to operate lighting and sound equipment. This technical knowledge can also turn creative—if a performer seems stuck onstage, the crew can give him a prompt by changing up the lights. It also works the other way around; as the scene evolves in tone or content, the music and lighting are adjusted, on the fly, to match the mood the actors are trying to evoke.

Grassroots Kava House: By the community, for the community

However, the kava root itself comes to St. Pete all the way from the South Pacific island Vanuatu. It is held to beautifully high standards, as Kenn learned when he traveled to Vanuatu in 2006 to learn all about the complex supply chain of kava, and about the people who grow it. He learned that Vanuatu’s laws require all exported kava to be organically grown, and no younger than five years old, guaranteeing a quality product. They stick to Vanuatu for their kava at the moment, but they’re working on sourcing from Hawaii and Tonga as well.

While they are passionate about traditionally prepared kava, Grassroots is also helping to grow the community by putting some “new twists” on the beverage that may make it more accessible to those who are new to the scene. Some blends have a more sedative effect and are best for evening sipping, while others may produce a more clear-headed, energetic result. The atmosphere is friendly and inviting to newcomers, so feel free to ask questions and your bartender will be your guide in finding the drink that’s right for you!

Night Life and Day Life?

The St. Pete Central Avenue drag boasts a boisterous, wellseasoned nightlife, but the freely flowing booze isn’t always everyone’s speed. As Ryan puts it, sometimes it’s nice to “take a night off ” from drinking, but still have the social aspect of hanging out at the kava bar.

By Nicole Brand The minds of Pacific Islanders have been calm for millennia, their mouths numbed by the root of the kava plant while sitting under the palm trees and enjoying a cool breeze.

In recent years, a community of likeminded people who love to drink the camaraderie-inducing beverage brewed from the kava root has been growing right here in St. Petersburg. Random in background, but united in one vision, five men came together to sow the seeds of what would become the first kava bar on Central Avenue: Grassroots Kava House, which opened this past January.

Ryan Cavanaugh works in IT, and Sean “Gravy” Suits plodded through his days as a banker. They used to imbibe the root together before heading off to their corporate lives. That

was, until Kenn “with two Ns” Hoyumpa, who had helped open one of the first kava bars in the continental U.S. back in 2002, and Wes Cardinal, approached Gravy about opening kava/coffee bar hybrid in St. Pete. Jeffrey Connelly—a former veterinarian radiologist who decided it was time for a career change—entered the mix, and Grassroots sprouted.

The result of their collaboration is a different kind of coffee bar, one that’s infused with a kava-induced sense of relaxation. They like to keep it local by partnering with other local businesses, and many of their beverages are locally sourced, such as drip coffee and espresso from Blind Tiger, cold brew and nitro coffee from Made, as well as Mother Kombucha, Laura Li’s, Min’s Matcha green tea, and Tidal Boar ginger beer.

It’s informal and convivial, but classy. Certainly those walking down the strip might look into the garage-panel doors and feel intrigued and inspired to check out what is within.

It’s not just a place to wander into when you’re looking for a break from the bar scene. It’s also a daytime co-working space, where you can do your own thing or collaborate with peers. Shoot, I brought my portable white board one night. Downstairs, Grassroots has three tricked-out workstations along the back right wall, past the genderneutral bathrooms. Upstairs, a long work table and an eclectic mix of chairs pepper the space. Both floors are home to ridiculously fast wi-fi.

Aesthetically, the place is dressed in a mix of vintage, reappropriated items and traditions. The distressed wood used throughout the space hails from late 19th and early 20th century Texas barns. The bar itself

stretches out to neatly cover nearly an entire wall of the cafe, and a small hydroponics unit—the brainchild and pet project of Wes—grows some of the basil and mint used in signature drinks, such as their kava mule.

Speaking of “pet projects”, on one wall you’ll find a photo mural of well-behaved pups posing for the camera. Grassroots partnered with Lara Warn of Pup Active to produce rescue dog portraits, which can be found on the right side when you first walk into the cafe.

On the first Sunday of every month Grassroots and Pup Active team up for their Puppers Day Brunch. Stop by to grab some of “Dog Friendly AF” apparel, and 15% of the day’s earnings goes to a local animal charity of Pup Active’s choice. In addition to looking forward to the next monthly Puppers Day, be sure to look for the mid-January birthday throwdown when Grassroots celebrates one year in business.

A shining light on the 600 block of Central Ave. There’s a little shop on Central Avenue that’s sure to brighten up one’s day no matter what the weather outside is like. Walking into Strands of Sunshine gives visitors an instant infusion of good vibes, as they find themselves surrounded by a thoughtfully curated collection of locally crafted art and goods.

Amy Marshall, the shop’s owner and curator, began making jewelry about 13 years ago, and what began as a hobby eventually grew into a business. When she and her husband, Chad, relocated to St. Petersburg six years ago, thanks to his job with the U.S. Navy, they both immediately fell in love with the city.

Invigorated by St. Pete’s vibrant art scene, Amy soon began looking for a way to showcase her pieces locally. On a whim while strolling down Central Ave., she placed a call to building management, and Strands of Sunshine was born. While she began in a small, 7x14foot workshop on 6th Street N., the shop has grown in the past five years into the much larger location it occupies today on Central Ave.

The first vendor that Strands of Sunshine added to its offerings was Smith Wicks Soy Candles, which are hand poured by Bryan and Savannah Smith right here in St. Pete. BridgePoint is a nondenominational Christian church comprised of three campuses, along with live streaming of their services, which can be accessed from anywhere. The downtown St. Petersburg campus is located on Mirror Lake in the beautiful, 100-year-old former Lyceum building.

The downtown campus’ pastor, Trevor Lovingood, hails from Nashville, Tennessee, along with his wife, Erica, their daughter, Londyn, and their soon-to-be-born, newest addition. Trevor grew up in church watching his father, whom he also calls his best friend, and in whose footsteps he follows as a pastor. He credits his father for encouraging him to go out and find his own faith and life path.

Trevor is a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree in communications and political science.

Prior to coming to Bridgepoint, he had the opportunity to serve congregations in Raleigh, North Carolina as well as Nashville and Knoxville, Tennessee. Being new to St. Pastor Trevor Lovingood Pete, Trevor loves how alive the city feels and is excited to support the area and watch the city grow.

Owl’s Nest Sanctuary: Whatever It Takes To Help

By Nehemiah Warner Nestled in an ordinary home in an ordinary neighborhood in Odessa, is an extraordinary mission-oriented animal rehabilitation organization. Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife is a nonprofit, volunteer-powered organization serving Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties. State-and-federally-licensed rehabilitator Kris Porter has opened her home to creatures of all kinds to get them back on their feet (or paws, I guess) vowing to do what is best for the animal. While she admitted it can be difficult to release her adorable animal friends, the Owl’s Nest Sanctuary has earned the trust of the Tampa Bay community for putting Florida wildlife’s best interest first and Kris Porter takes that mission seriously.

Kris Porter said she “can’t remember a time when animals weren’t a part of my life.” Even our phone interview was punctuated by her gently redirecting nursing animals. She credited her grandfather and father for instilling her love for animals even while her mother harped on her for bringing them home - a habit she has yet to break.

She grew up in Pennsylvania but moved to the Sunshine State to attend the University of Florida and to encounter her first love: whales and dolphins. Porter majored in marine mammals and graduated in 1991, landing a job interview with Sea World in San Diego. Interestingly, a budding romance kept her from getting on the plane. Instead, she got married and then worked 11 years at Busch Gardens in Tampa as lead zoologist in the animal nursery working with everything from birds to panda bears.

When her daughter was born prematurely, Porter resigned to care for her own. Years later, she eased back into animal rehab by raising squirrels and rabbits. Within four months she had her licensure in place. “It progressed very quickly,” she reminisced. Owl’s Nest Sanctuary opened 3 and a half years ago and has grown to over 60 volunteers.

Rehabilitation proved to be a team effort.

from Florida Fish and Wildlife. Porter reported receiving 20-80 calls daily from the community.

“I’m not sure how it was all happening [before Owl’s Nest]. A lot of animals must have just died which is unfortunate,” Porter said with a sigh.

Collaboration has been key. Porter spoke about connecting with groups to get animals rehabbed and released: the first legally raised coyote named Uno in Jacksonville, seven rare spotted skunks—two from Peace River Sanctuary in Punta Gorda, and even Ollie the otter who was found in a local parking lot and went all the way to the Denver Aquarium for care. Denver Aquarium still advocates for funding support.

Porter said every time she sees a donation come in from Denver she thinks, “One little otter did all that!” The tender stories of their animals in recovery have had far reaches.

run bloodwork on the birds to find the cause to be botulism and red algae. Porter remarked how impressive it was to see the community rally together to rescue the birds which stood as the icon of our great city.

How can we continue to help? Porter shared their biggest needs as funding and education.

A boat is needed to reach coastal animals in distress. Feeding all the animals can be an expensive endeavor as well. Porter was most passionate when speaking about education needed for all water communities such as removing hooks when catching and releasing and refraining from littering. One pelican had seven fishing hooks in his stomach when x-rayed back in January. Cutting lines and tossing fish to birds can puncture their lungs. Coastal cleanups reveal a shocking amount of dangerous garbage including balloons which are deadly to sea turtles.

When looking to the future, Porter sees an even greater impact. Owl’s Nest received two acres for flight cages donated by Westcoast Morgans horse stables in Odessa. An architect donated his services by drawing blueprints, but funding is still needed to make them a reality.

Large birds of prey such as bald eagles and hawks require 100-foot cages to flight-test before being released back into their natural habitat.

Currently, volunteers must drive 8 hours round trip to have birds flight-tested at another facility.

“Will my volunteers do it?” Porter questioned and then answered herself, “Oh, yeah; without question, but to have it locally would certainly be ideal.” Porter’s response highlighted her volunteers’ commitment to do whatever it takes to help an animal in need.

Downtown Developments

By Brian Zucker, Owner of St. Pete Rising It seems like each time we take a stroll through downtown there are new restaurants and galleries opening and more apartment complexes and condo towers being built. We realize it’s difficult to keep track of everything. Luckily, we’ve done the research, so you don’t have to.

Each month we will feature a few of the most exciting new downtown developments that are on the horizon for the Sunshine City.

On the Jannus block, Rattle N Hum has opened, replacing Cask and Ale. Owned by the folks at Thirsty First, Rattle N Hum’s focus is on providing exceptional craft cocktails, craft beers, and fine food. All cocktails, food and beer will rotate seasonally in order to keep everything fresh. Renovations on the space, which include the addition of an outdoor bar area, will be wrapped up this month. Grab a cold one and watch the game at Rattle N Hum, located at 29 3rd Street North.

Debuting in Downtown St. Pete in January 2018, The Imagine Museum will showcase the art of contemporary American studio glass. Located at 1901 Central Avenue, the 50,000 square foot museum will house a permanent collection across two floors, which will display glass works from the early 1960s to the contemporary moment. Specifically, fifty-five artists have been chosen to represent 55 years of studio glass in America. Once open to the public, the museum will also include special exhibits, a museum shop and a cafe. The Imagine Museum joins two other museums currently under construction

in Downtown St. Pete — The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art and The Museum of the American Arts and Craft Movement.

Last month, Fabrica Pizza turned on the wood-fired ovens and opened their doors to the public. This marks the second location for Fabrica — the first location is situated in Downtown Tampa. The brand new Downtown St. Pete location sits on the ground-level of The Hermitage Apartment Homes at 101 7th Street South, directly across the street from the new Publix. Fabrica specializes in build-your-own, individual-sized Neopolitan pizza, however they also serve salads and small plates such as oven-roasted meatballs and marinated olives.

Be sure to top it all off with a scoop of their locally made gelato!

A year after announcing their intent to join the Downtown St. Pete restaurant scene, Ford’s Garage has finally broken ground at 200 First Avenue South, which was formerly home to the Rowdies Den. With seven locations throughout Florida, Ford’s Garage is all about their burgers and craft beer. The burger options are endless,

offering a wide variety of patties including black angus beef, American Kobe, turkey, chicken, tuna, seafood and vegetarian. If you’re not in the mood for a burger, Ford’s Garage will also offer a diverse selection of entrées including steaks, pasta, and ribs. On the lighter side, the menu boasts fresh salads, grilled chicken, turkey and fresh fish.

Ford’s Garage will open in the first half of 2018.

The Fringe District continues to grow as 11 Chicks opens, bringing Venezuelan cuisine to 199 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North.

The star of the menu are their build-your-own arepas, a Venezuelan specialty that consists of two fried corn patties stuffed with your choice of meat, cheese, eggs, and more. The Venezuelan bowl, empanadas, and tequeños also come highly recommended.
