Happy October, St. Pete! Halloween is around the corner and we’ve got your full line-up of events for kids (pg. 16) and adults (pg.

14 and 31). If you prefer to throw your own party, we’ve got some ideas for that too (pg. 18).

Residents demand affordable housing and that is exactly what we will get. The Butterfly Apartments are coming soon to downtown (pg. 29). This is just one project and the need for affordable housing is ever-increasing, but it’s a start and we’ll keep our fingers crossed that more developments like this are on the way.

On another note, we were deeply saddened by the death of a bicyclist on MLK Jr. St. N. last month. Anne McLaughlin was crossing the street near 28th Ave. N. when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle in the Northbound lane She was pronounced dead at the scene. This tragedy comes less than a year after the city restriped the road and installed crosswalks in an effort to make it safer. It’s important to note there is now only one Southbound lane; there are still two Northbound lanes (where McLaughlin was hit).

Studies so far show a decrease in traffic speeds on the Southbound lane, however, there has been no difference in speeds heading Northbound. There’s more to this conversation than space here allows, but one thing is for sure: speed kills. We hope that when the city reviews the effectiveness of this project, everyone (residents included) takes this into consideration. We send our condolences to McClaughlin’s friends and family.

Like most months, we are bursting at the seams with content and had to make the tough decision to cut a few stories. We want to add on more pages so we can run more each issue, but we can’t do it without community support. From the Museum’s Archives: Central National Bank With St. Petersburg Museum of History Executive Director, Rui Farias The spectacular 1920’s St. Petersburg land boom slowed dramatically by late 1926, and came to a grinding halt 90 years ago this month when the New York Stock Exchange collapsed on October 29, 1929. The Sunshine City sold itself on providing northern visitors a paradise - an alternative to reality. But as the Great Depression worsened, it was difficult to hide the destitute and hard times. Local politician and business leaders even banished the term “Depression” from the local vocabulary, but when the City couldn’t meet its payroll, there was no fooling anyone.

The value of total bank deposits in St. Petersburg fell from $46-million in 1925 to $4.3-million in 1931. The total value of construction, via building

permits, fell from $24-million in 1925 to $278,000 in 1932. Beautiful North Shore homes that cost $40,000 to build, were being sold for $7,000.

People of St. Pete: Lariana Forsythe

By Tina Stewart Brakebill St. Pete is celebrated for its fabulous weather, beautiful vistas, world-class food scene, and thriving cultural atmosphere but its people make the city special. In appreciation, each month Green Bench shines a light on one of the many who make St. Pete unique.

In recognition of October’s designation as National Domestic Violence Awareness month, we’re focusing the spotlight on Lariana Forsythe. Since June 2017, she has served as the CEO of Community Action Stops Abuse (CASA). As the official domestic violence center for Pinellas County, CASA provides lifesaving services. Beyond being reactive, it also aims to be proactive as the organization envisions a world free from domestic violence. As CEO, Forsythe leads CASA’s efforts to bring that vision to life. Her personal journey offers evidence of the empowering possibilities embodied in the motto “Stand Up to Silence.”

Learning to Stand Forsythe was born and raised in Phoenix. After graduating from Arizona State University, she was vice president and chief development officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix. She married and had two children, and eventually she hid a terrible secret: She was in an abusive relationship. Breaking her internal silence was the first step to regaining her life. After her divorce, she continued her full-time work and parenting, and she returned to school, earning an MBA as part of her effort to get “a piece of me back,” she said. In her case, divorce did not eliminate the danger. Forsythe had an extended hospital stay during which she heard the stories of other survivors who conceded reluctance to disclose their own narratives. She realized she wanted

to do more to prevent and eliminate domestic abuse, and her interest led her to CASA.

CASA: Standing Up to Silence As Forsythe’s experience illustrates, domestic violence isn’t always a singular, or physical, act. It is a form of control that can include verbal, physical, sexual, financial, and emotional abuse. One in three women and one in four men will experience abuse in their lifetimes. “Standing up to silence” is more than admitting domestic violence happens; it’s raising voices against violence through advocacy, empowerment and social change. CASA’s three-prong approach includes emergency services, preventative education, and restorative programs. Its 24-hour hotline (727)-895-4912 or TTY (727)-828-1269 can help evaluate the degree of danger, prepare a safety plan, and relocate to the CASA shelter if necessary. Once immediate danger is managed, CASA can connect survivors to a programs designed to help victims and their families regain control of their lives, including counseling services, justice advocacy, housing assistance, child protection advocacy, and access to cell phones. But CASA doesn’t just react. Primary Prevention programs help affected youth transition into healthy adults. CASA resources can connect abusers to tools and resources designed to help them stop the cycle of violence.

Spooky St. Pete: The Dark Side of the Sunshine City

The Mysterious Banyan Trees

I have come to believe almost anything is possible in a city like St. Pete. I can proudly say that prior to making this place my homebase, I never attended things like Drag Queen Story Time or seen a PRIDE Festival as big and bold as it is here. As much fun and color there is in the Sunshine City, there is also quite a bit of darkness hidden behind the bright ambiance.

How well do you really know the place you call home? Aside from the popular legends (The Vinoy being the big one) there are spooky stories and urban legends peppered into almost every cobblestone street and historic building.

Let’s take a quick stroll through the dark side of the Sunshine City...

Mary Reeser She is by far my favorite St. Pete legend. I have been fascinated with spontaneous human combustion since I could pronounce it, and to find out St. Pete is home to one of the first reported incidents is... interesting to say the least.

Mary Reeser resided in St. Pete with her husband, Dr. Richard Reeser. A seemingly normal couple, what happened the night of July 2nd still has some people scratching their heads searching for an explanation. Around 8am, Mary Reeser's landlady, Pansy Carpenter, arrived at Reeser's door with a telegram. After knocking with no response, she tried the door and found the metal doorknob to be uncomfortably warm to the touch. Assuming this was due to a house fire, she ran home and called the police.

What the police found was baffling: While the body of Reeser was completely cremated, aside from the skull, the rest of the apartment remained undisturbed save some smoke damage. In other words, the fire started and ended with Mary Reeser’s body.

To date, more than 200 supposed cases of spontaneous human combustion have been reported worldwide. Is Mary one of these cases? You be the judge.

If you walk along Beach Drive these banyans are near impossible to ignore. With their branches hanging like limbs, they are a focal point for pictures, play areas for kids and protection from the sun.

But, did you know there is actually no recorded history as to when or HOW these trees got here? At least none that I could find.

Aside from a possible reference to one of them in postcard dating back to 1935, no one knows who (or what) brought them here!

In the US, banyans are found mostly in South Florida and Hawaii.

The trees here in St. Pete are able to survive this far north because of the "peninsula effect" (the water surrounding Pinellas creates a temperate/subtropical climate). Exactly when these two trees started growing in North Straub Park remains a bit of a mystery but they certainly are impressive.

Mini Lights of Roser Park “Mini lights, mini lights, come out tonight.”

There are many versions of this story, but the one most agreed upon goes as follows: “Legend has it that residing under the bridge alongside Booker Creek in Historic Roser Park, tiny green people (the “mini lights”) await in the dark. Some sources say the little people were part of a circus from centuries past; others say the creatures belonged to a voodoo priestess who once lived in Roser Park.

Regardless of who you speak to, all agree on one thing: Any time someone calls out “Mini lights, mini lights, come out tonight” three times, the minis will chase them down. Do you dare and try it?

St. Pete in itself is an urban legend. Stories of how the name came about varies from a coin toss to a Russian entrepreneur just missing his hometown. Pirate legends flood the bay surrounding this city and homes that are 120+ years old line the streets like doll houses. How could there not be some haunted history in a place like this?

Small But Mighty: Pawlicious Poochie Pet Rescue

by Erin Cody “Small but mighty” is the refrain one hears when speaking to anyone about Pawlicious Poochie Pet Rescue. Both the organization and the special needs animals they support pack quite a punch in a small, incredibly inspirational package. At the helm of the project is animal activist superstar, Jaime McKnight.

How it all began It began six years ago, when McKnight met a senior Italian Greyhound by the name of Lucy. “She was surrendered due to a blood disease, and the owners didn’t want to spend money to get her better.

Lucy showed us that senior dogs are indeed full of life and have lots of love to give!” she emphatically states. Sweet Lucy has since died from lung cancer but her legacy lives on in the rescue she inspired. McKnight decided to create a rescue organization whose mission is to focus on handicapped, hospice, critically injured, and old dogs, all of whom are under ten pounds. “These are the ones that most would not save or adopt, the ‘Under Dogs’ if you will.”

McKnight uses social media to share the journeys of each of her rescues. With a following of nearly 100,000, there is clearly quite an audience! She masterfully infuses brightness and joy into every part of her organization.

“These dogs deserve only the best for the time they have left. I still tell their sad stories because they need to be heard, but approaching rescue the way I have, shiny and positive, has led to more people wanting to get involved, as the focus is on these dogs’ happiness and the great days ahead!”

How did this angel of animal care get her start? “I have loved animals as long as I can remember. My first job at 15 years old was cleaning kennels at the local veterinarian. You would find me on the floor laying with sick dogs and the dogs that just got out of surgery,” McKnight remembers.

She still provides the animals in her care this kind of high-touch attention.

“I do not use foster homes, because most of my rescues require around-the clock-care: syringe feedings, medications, critical care, and hospital visits at all hours of the night,” she explains.

A true one-woman-show, Pawlicious Poochie Pet Rescue, indelibly changes the lives of over 100 dogs each year! “I spend anywhere from $1,000-6,000 per dog. My most expensive case to date totaled $12,000, and that senior pup is still alive and living his best life with his fur-ever family,” she smiles. With no corporate sponsors, the non-profit depends entirely on donations from the community.

On top of running this demanding, desperately needed rescue, McKnight also runs a successful real estate business. How do these seemingly disparate operations coexist? “Real Estate and Rescue go hand-in-hand,” ensures McKnight. “Every seller and buyer has a story.

story; the same is true of each rescue dog. I do whatever it takes to make real estate clients achieve their goals and dreams.”

As with her rescue, McKnight is always willing to go the extra mile, and her commitment is extraordinary. “I am one of the few real estate agents who will drive over three hours to sell my client’s home.

I work just as hard for my $50,000 clients as I do for my multi-million dollar clients. I am always accessible, and am known to work all hours, day and night.”

For the love of the job Both rescue and real estate are true passions for McKnight. “I love being a real estate agent! Many of my client’s are past adopters, or end up filling their new home with my rescued dogs. Rescue and real estate truly are labors of love, and I put my heart and soul into both!” she beams.

What comes next? McKnight has big plans for the future. “The dream is to build a shelter that would change the shelter landscape forever. A true no-kill shelter, catering to those that wouldn’t otherwise get a chance. Open air and, of course, pink and sparkly, the shelter would provide hospice care and the best advanced vet care available.”

Saturday Morning Market is back in business for its 18th season.

Catch it from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Saturday in the parking lot at Al Lang Stadium, 230 First St. SE. This is one of the largest events of its kind; organizers say more than 10,000 people come out every week to support their 170 rotating vendors. Our favorite things include the huge variety of ready-to-eat foods and fresh flowers.

Raising Locals: 10 Kid-Friendly Events for a Spooky October

By Vandi Carmella and Denielle Kennett The only thing scary about making Halloween plans in the Sunshine City is trying to figure out how to be in so many places at once. The entire month is filled with a haunting number of happenings leading up to the big night.

We’ve narrowed it down to 10 events where you and your family can put on your best costumes, stay safe, and have a happy Halloween, St. Pete-style.

“Legends of the Fall” During October, St. Petersburg College’s Planetarium and Observatory disguises itself as the “Haunted Planetarium.” Here, learn all about the Greek myth and lore playing out in the autumn skies, but watch out for ghosts, ghouls, zombies, and other creatures of the night. Parents, this one can get a little scary. The suggested minimum age is 7. Fridays in Oct., 7 & 8:15pm The Haunted Hike Tour the creepy alleys and brick-lined streets of St Petersburg’s most paranormal neighborhood. Euclid St. Paul’s 16th annual Haunted Hike includes skits and side shows sure to enchant the whole family. The one-hour hike is $8 per adult and $4 per child. Oct. 19, 6 - 9pm Howl-O-Fest Enjoy prizes, games, inflatables and more at St.

Petersburg Parks and Recreation’s Howl-O-Fest, taking place at J.W. Cate Recreation Center. Tickets are $10 per child on the day of the event or $7 until Oct. 18. Admission is free for parents, and proceeds benefit the J.W. Cate, Gladden Park and Walter Fuller Recreation Centers’ Teen Programs. Oct. 19, 2 - 9pm Zombie Thriller Dance Come watch (or join in) the ultimate Zombie Thriller Dance on the front steps of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Performances take place every 30 minutes beginning at 7pm. Don’t know the dance yet? Rehearsals will be held every Thursday evening from 6:30-8:30pm for those interested in participating. Oct. 25, 5:30 - 7:30pm Trick-or-Treat Trail Dress in your Halloween best and be ready to fill your treat bags at the 3rd annual Historic Uptown Neighborhood Association Trick-or-Treat Trail around Round Lake Park. Free and friendly for all ages, we like to think of it as a trial run for the big night.

Oct. 26, 5 - 7pm

Trick-or-Treating with Seniors Halloween brings out the child in everyone at the Third Annual Trick-or-Treating with Seniors at The Fountains at Boca Ciega Bay. Organized in partnership with Sunshine City Kids, this event is open to kids of all ages and offers an opportunity to celebrate with the residents of the retirement community. Oct. 29, 10:30am Tots Trick-or-Treat Children ages 5 and under can join this morning Halloween celebration at Great Explorations Children’s Museum. Activities include trick-or-treating, art and science tables, dance party, and costume parade. This event is free for members or included with general admission. Oct. 30, 10 am - 12 pm Halloween in Old Northeast This iconic neighborhood near downtown St. Pete transforms into a spooky wonderland full of elaborate decorations, making it our favorite October 31st tradition.

Other reasons we love Halloween in HONNA: streets closed to traffic, friendly neighbors, and some really great photo ops that capture the spirit of the season. Oct. 31, 6 - 9pm Movies in the Park Preserve the ‘Burg has a special Halloween evening planned for this edition of Movies in the Park. Costume contests for kids and adults, treats, live music, vendors, and a showing of Scooby Doo and the Scary Scarecrow followed by the silent film version of The Phantom of the Opera make this a night in North Straub Park you don’t want to miss. Chapter 1: How big is your spooky soirée?

“The more, the scarier (12+ guests)!” Go to letter A. or “Just a few select friends (under 12).” Head to letter B. A) Earlier dates invite less competition from other events so they are a smart choice. Saturdays are generally better than Fridays as people have more time to get dressed up, but again, there will likely be other parties afoot on Saturday nights.

B) As long as you give enough notice, any weekend night should do. I suggest sending out a Google Form or Facebook poll to figure out which dates work for the majority of your intended guests.

Chapter 2: Does your party have a theme?

“Heck yeah!” Hop over to letter C. or “Isn’t ‘Halloween’ the theme?” Meet me at letter D. C) An unusual and exciting theme will undoubtedly draw more people to your party, but the preparation will be more labor-intensive. If you chose Letter A above, the right theme is key. Put a twist on something everyone knows. You could do a creepy take on Willy Wonka or a scary Alice in Wonderland.

Because of the specificity of the motif, you needn’t worry about people dressing in theme, but of course, it’s great if they want to! Themed costumes are a better option if you chose Letter B since you’ll likely have more guest involvement.

D) Yep, “Halloween” is absolutely a theme. No one will stress about being in the right costume for your party and decorations will be easier and more generic. A unique theme will draw people to an event though, so if you chose Letter A, you may want to consider it - but fear not! You can still make a general Halloween party a memorable night by planning something exciting and original for your guests. Perhaps present a few pre-mixed Halloween-themed cocktails, a perfectly curated spooky/fun music mix, or a round of “pin the tail on the devil.” You might even plan a surprise for your guests like the “Scream” killer running through the party with a fake knife at midnight to give them a fright!

“Psyched!” Visit letter E. or “Stressed!” On to letter F. E) Awesome! Infinite free inspiration awaits you on Pinterest. Use it! You’ll need to put more thought into decorating if you are going with a specific theme. Find some ideas you like, pick up a few art supplies, and invite a handful of friends over for a decor crafting night. Supplement your creations with a few store-bought items, and you should be good to go!

F) No worries! There’s a TON of Halloween decor you can purchase. Just make sure you have a few pals over a couple of hours before the big event to help set everything up. The pre-made decor route can be a little harder if you are going for a specific theme, but not impossible! Look on Pinterest to see what other people have done with the theme - trust me. Let’s say you are doing “Stranger Things.” Queue up some eighties music, get a string of Christmas lights, and write the alphabet on paper to put up on a wall to recreate the Byers’ living room.

Have a backyard? That’s your “Upside Down!” Grab a few packages of black spider webs to spread at the base of trees and chairs, keep the lights low, and maybe even nab a cheap “snow machine” to achieve the look.

No it’s not the Downton Abbey movie, but brunch! Queue the sparklers and overflowing mimosas. Now, of course, this opens the door to so many delectable breakfast concoctions, but I have to stick with my absolute go-to items, ones that make poached eggs the star of the show.

We start our brunch eggs-travaganza with a more traditional take.

With the advent of slightly cooler weather (yes, not rising into the 90s is something to celebrate!), one must contemplate the best locale for outdoor seating to pair with their delicacies, and Fresco’s Waterfront Bistro certainly delivers. Who doesn’t want to boat-watch on Beach Drive while nibbling on Benedict? My pro-tip for you at this stop is to

bring a buddy and order both the Crab and Avocado Benedicts, add on the Lobster Benedict to share because it’s so hard to pick just one!

If you’re really feeling these outdoor vibes, then my next spot should also top your brunch list this fall. My favorite way to experience Red Mesa Cantina is to bike down from Old Northeast and then nab a spot near the fountain outside. Cool down with a passion fruit mimosa before tackling the Eggs Benedicto, a fun spin on the classic with gorditas, guacamole, and chipotle cream sauce. Don’t feel guilty adding the churros for dessert, biking makes all the food guilt-free, right?

My love affair with this next spot might just be my Southern roots showing, or possibly due to the fact that I want to carry around a vat of their four-cheese grits like Winnie the Pooh and his honey. If you’ve never been sold on grits before, then run, don’t walk to Noble Crust because y’all… these are about to change your mind! One cannot survive on grits alone though, so definitely take your grits with a side of Southern Benny. Between the country ham and fried green tomatoes, you’ll be back at Grandma’s dinner table (if Grandma is the best thing south of the Mason-Dixon).

We must round out our Tour de Benedicts at The Mill downtown.

The Sausage and Waffle Benny starts with a cornbread waffle topped with breakfast sausage, fried green tomatoes, poached eggs, and then finished off with gumbo filè hollandaise and cane syrup. This portion is perfect for sharing, or for those late night leftover cravings.

Lastly, because I love you and because I have newly discovered this poached egg perfection, I will leave you with one last dish: the B.E.C. Ramen from Ichicoro Ane. A brothless ramen with applewood smoked bacon, poached egg, parmesan, black garlic, scallion, and shaved bonito flakes, it reminds me of a Japanese take on Carbonara, meets utter and complete perfection.

For our October stroll through Step Inside St. Pete, we’re switching up the pace by taking a look at a commercial property that received a nomination for its stellar interior design. The hot spot? Rising Tide Innovation Center (RTIC), a coworking space on Central Avenue downtown. We’re meeting Ginger LaRue, its community manager, and Brooke Beeler, its operations and marketing manager.

The Office, Reimagined RTIC was founded by a scientist, Leigh Fletcher, and a veteran, Tina Fischer, both practicing attorneys and entrepreneurs, who wanted to create a space for other business owners to have everything they need to get off the ground. After falling in love with the McCrory Hotel’s wood floors, exposed bricks, and vast array of windows, the team invested in cutting-edge designs for inspiration and productivity. They threw out the paradigms of cubicles and water coolers and opted for ample use of plants, art, color, custom furniture, an espresso machine, fancy water

dispensers, environmentally friendly glassware, whiteboard walls, and touchscreen technology for all three of their meeting rooms.

Fletcher and Fischer designed the space themselves with help from talented local craftsmen. Much of the artwork is noise-dampeners in disguise from My Favorite Art Space. Their one-of-a-kind tables and desks were made by Stage One Designs. The illuminated glass-andmetal logo fixture at their reception desk? Kudos to Chroma Studio.

Rain Forest Interiors supplied the finishing touches of “living walls” and hundreds of plants. Desk members and office owners personalize their areas with their own unique branding and décor, making the space even more dynamic.

Work with Splashes of Play As you peruse around RTIC, it’s clear everyone stays busy and focused. Fliers promote a CEO exchange and a night of networking around the corner, inviting the public to be part of something bigger than themselves. Inspired by the quote, “A rising tide lifts all boats,” the team holds that when one succeeds, everyone benefits. LaRue and Beeler understand that supporting members’ success can sometimes mean offering logistical business help; at others, touches such as setting up meeting rooms with coffee and sparkling water for clients.

Neighborhood Natives Flourish in Crescent Heights

By Nicole Brand It’s not often that Mayor Kriseman and District 4 Councilwoman Darden Rice get to ride in the back of a 1960’s vintage pickup truck and tour a new neighborhood project. On August 25th this year, that’s exactly what St. Pete residents got a glimpse of if they were cruising through Crescent Heights. They were touring the neighborhood for the official “vine cutting” ribbon ceremony for the Crescent Heights Neighborhood Association’s (CHNA) most recent project.

CHNA decided to pilot a program planting street corner gardens on city land. Though there are hopes of duplicating the program across the city, they knew they had to start somewhere. The project centers around the use of native plants. This means the plants are incredibly low maintenance, they sequester water and carbon, require zero pesticides, and they attract native pollinators to the area.

The project began where all new projects do: an awareness building campaign. Former CHNA president, Thomas Paterek, hooked the association up with the Surfrider Foundation after connecting the dots about an ocean-friendly garden program the foundation champions.

After learning more about the program, the association decided to work with Surfrider to implement their ocean-friendly native mini street corner gardens.

First, they needed to find a nursery that could meet their needs. They decided on Wilcox Nursery, a local nursery and landscaping company that specializes in all things native to our little region of Florida. It was through Wilcox that the initiative found Arnie Rutkis, an independent contractor who does landscape design for the nursery. He’d worked with several community-style garden projects in the past so he was the perfect candidate for CHNA’s corner gardens.

After finding the right partners, the association was ready to hit the streets. Corner houses were contacted about the project and several events were held to educate the neighborhood about the importance of native, ocean-friendly plants, what they could do for the egregious rain runoff that floods the streets every time a storm comes through, and exactly what the process would be for planting within the neighborhood.

Awareness workshops were held at Wilcox, the Imagine Museum and even at Thomas Paterek’s house.

Together, they created micro-oases for beneficial native critters.

Over 150 volunteers came together through the duration of the project to create this garden success story and the age range was impressive. Kids joined forces with neighborhood members in their 80s to plant natives such as the hammock twinflower around a native coontie centerpiece.

Amazingly, a CHNA Garden Club emerged from the project. Around 15 neighbors get together to check on the 38 native corner gardens and perform any needed maintenance...not that maintenance is a necessary component of the upkeep. That’s the amazing thing about choosing native plants. Not only do they sequester carbon and water, they also thrive in their native climate. St. Augustine grass may need an intense amount of upkeep here, but these plants thrive in the sandy soils of St. Pete so after a little post-planting TLC, they don’t actually require much maintenance.

Downtown Developments

By Brian Zucker, Owner of St. Pete Rising It seems like each time we take a stroll through downtown there are new restaurants and galleries opening and more apartment complexes and condo towers being built. We realize it’s difficult to keep track of everything. Luckily, we’ve done the research, so you don’t have to. Each month we will feature a few of the most exciting new downtown developments that are on the horizon for the Sunshine City.

After steady growth over the past six years, The Body Electric Yoga Company is opening a second 15,600 square foot facility called The Body Electric Athletic Company at 655 31st Street South in the Warehouse Arts District. The goal is to provide great training and recovery classes with yoga sensibilities. The BE Athletic plans to offer about 35 to 40 classes, sorted into six categories — Conditioning, Strength, Combo, Core Focus, Self-Care and Recovery, and Loaded Yoga. The Body Electric Athletic Company is shooting for a mid-December opening.

Bar Chinchilla is now open at 439 1st Avenue North in Downtown St Pete. This intimate beer and wine bar is the smallest in St Pete (and probably Tampa Bay) with only 18 seats inside. Bar Chinchilla’s wellrounded wine list includes more than 30 wines hand-selected by a Master Sommelier -- and the highlight is definitely their extensive Madeira collection. As for beer, there are eight on draft with a regular rotation of sought after craft beers.

The Butterfly Apartments, an affordable housing development, are coming soon to 715 5th Avenue North in Downtown St Pete. Boley Centers, Inc. is teaming up with Pinellas Affordable Living Inc. to redevelop an existing affordable housing property into a new three story building with 20-units that will cater to individuals with disabilities who have been homeless.

COPA, a wine cocktail lounge, will be opening mid-October at 1047 Central Avenue in the EDGE District. The concept is being brought to life by two brothers from Saint Petersburg who want to offer a refreshing spin on wine and beer cocktails. Besides sangria, most people have a limited experience blending wine with other beverages, but Copa wants to change that.

Bohemian Rêves, a plant-based skincare shop, is now open at 1620 Central Avenue in Downtown St Pete. Owner Amelia Naomi Dean focuses on formulating user-friendly, vegan, and organic skincare for the everyday bohemian. The shop sells apothecary candles, botanical perfumes, bars of soap, face washes, lotions, and all-natural body oils. Their Patchouli + Vanilla Texturizing Mist and Desert Fleur Botanical Perfume have quickly become a cult favorite at local Saint Petersburg markets.

Celebrity chef Fabio Vivani has announced a brand new restaurant for 200 Central Avenue in Downtown St Pete. La Pergola will take over a 6,000 square foot parcel formerly used as office space for an all-new dining concept that will serve authentic Italian cuisine with a lively lounge and bar scene featuring unique craft cocktails. La Pergola is targeting a Spring 2020 opening.

Sauvignon: Wine Locker and American Trattoria is coming soon to 241 Central Avenue, on the second level of the Jannus Block in a space formerly occupied by A Taste For Wine. Owned and operated by the former manager of Annata on Beach Drive, Sauvignon will be equal parts restaurant and wine bar where everyone can enjoy a glass of wine, a pint of beer, really great desserts, and contemporary American food with an Italian twist that’s not going to break the bank. Sauvignon will also have over 50 climate-controlled wine lockers available for rent that’ll each hold 12 bottles of wine. The restaurant is currently in the buildout phase with plans to open in January 2020.

Coffee Pot Turkey Trot: A New Thanksgiving Day Tradition

By Vandi Carmella While some people will be busy basting their turkeys on Thanksgiving morning, many in St. Petersburg plan to lace up their sneakers for the annual Coffee Pot Turkey Trot 5K. Friends of North Shore Elementary, a local non-profit group, is set to host this family-friendly event on Thursday, November 28. Now in its third year, the chip-timed race (and Thanksgiving-themed costume contest) benefits North Shore Elementary School.

“Our mission is to celebrate health, community, and excellence in our public schools,” says Turkey Trot Marketing Chair Amber Brinkley. The race is the largest fundraiser of the year for the group and the only Turkey Trot in St. Pete. Proceeds help support enrichment programs and teacher development at the school.

Though most Pinellas County public schools follow a traditional six-hour day schedule, North Shore Elementary is able to offer additional teacher-led “7th hour” activities — including everything from yoga, cooking, and Spanish classes to art and science clubs — with FNSE’s support. Because of the success of the Turkey Trot fundraising, these afterschool enrichment activities are accessible to all North Shore families, including those students who rely on the school buses for transportation.

So what does a Successful Turkey Trot Look Like?

The first year of the race saw about 500 participants; this number was tripled in the second year. Race organizers are hoping to triple the previous year’s turnout again in 2019.

“We consider it a new Thanksgiving Day tradition,” explains Brinkley. “We’ve had to readjust the route to accommodate more runners so now it’s really an open field.” But as the race has grown, so has the need for volunteers. About 35 volunteers showed up to help with last year’s race. The group anticipates the need for 60 volunteers this year.

In addition to volunteers, many local sponsors help facilitate the Turkey Trot and will be in attendance with activities for participants and spectators.

The Details The Coffee Pot Turkey Trot 5K begins at 7:45am at North Shore Elementary located at 200 35th Avenue NE. The race route follows all closed streets and highlights some of the neighborhoods zoned for the school.

Although the event is not pet-friendly, children and strollers are welcomed. Prizes will be awarded to each age division and costume contest winners. All participants receive a medal and t-shirt.

Registration is $30 per adult until November 3, $15 for children ages 6 to 11, and free for kids under age 6. Earn that extra piece of pumpkin pie and register to run at runsignup.com/coffeepotturkeytrot.
