From Florida Presbyterian to Eckerd College

My alma mater doesn’t have a war chant or a fight song. It doesn’t have stately lecture halls or teaching assistants. What it does have is a lush waterfront campus with its own beach. It has a volunteer searchand-rescue team, state-of-the-art science labs, and a brand-new, 33,000-square-foot arts complex. It has small classes, yellow bikes and “pitchers with professors”.

I’m talking about Eckerd College, and while it may not have the more traditional trappings of higher education, that’s because it is relatively young, founded just 60 years ago this month as Florida Presbyterian College (FPC). In light of this anniversary, I decided to learn more about the history of the college that brought me to St. Pete.

A book called On Solid Rock, by Stephanie Kadel Taras, Ph.D. (Eckerd alum and granddaughter of the founding president) provided the source material for this story.

Florida Presbyterian College

A few years before the Presbyterian Church voted to establish FPC in May of 1958, a man named Hunter Blakely had an idea. Working for the Church’s Board of Education, he noticed two things: Florida was experiencing rapid population growth, and it was the only state in the nation without a Presbyterian College.

As Blakely began to circulate the idea that Florida needed a Presbyterian college, he met a charismatic Orlando clergyman, Bill Kadel, who would become FPC’s first president. Kadel was instrumental selling the concept of FPC—when it was nothing more than a dream—to

the people who would bring it to life.

One of these people was Jack Bevan, a professor from Davidson College in North Carolina, who almost single-handedly recruited the founding faculty. He traveled the country spreading Blakely and Kadel’s vague but passionate vision of a liberal arts college built on academic excellence, freedom of thought, and Christian values.

Bevan was persuasive, and lured many tenured professors away from established universities with little more than the promise of moving to sunny Florida to create a new kind of college from scratch.

Downtown Connection

Cities all over Florida wanted to host FPC, but St. Pete brought a couple of compelling gifts to the table. One, the city had 170 acres of land on Boca Ciega Bay to donate and, two, it offered a temporary campus to use while the college was being built: a former WWII maritime base at Bayboro Harbor, downtown.

It was the perfect solution, and St. Pete was chosen as FPC’s home.

In December 1959, the founding faculty would come together at the maritime base to hash out the college’s curriculum. FPC’s first freshman class of 155 young men and women began their studies at the interim campus in the fall of 1960.

As FPC developed the nearly untouched land off of 54th Avenue South for the permanent campus, its size was doubled by dredging sand from the bottom of the bay. At the groundbreaking ceremony in September 1961, Kadel made a joke of sorts by quoting Jesus’ Sermon on

the Mount, which called men who built homes on rock wise, and those who built on sand, foolish. According to Taras, even though they were literally digging into sand, Kadel believed FPC’s foundation was solid because it was built on “its people, community support, faith in God, commitment to vision.”

He must have been right; by the beginning of FPC’s fourth academic year, in the fall of 1963, the permanent campus was ready for classes to begin.

A Sign of the Times

FPC’s founding faculty consisted entirely of white males, which was the norm at that time. However, they also tended to be progressive thinkers, and their personal understanding of Christianity meant treating all people as equals. While the South was still very segregated, they inherently believed FPC would be an integrated college. They could not envision it as a segregated institution; that was the old way of doing things!

However, when the first African American student applied for admission in 1962, the board of trustees voted against admitting him, although he was clearly qualified.

Standing up for what they knew was

right, all but two faculty members submitted resignations to the board. Remember, these were professors who had left tenured posts to take a chance on FPC. Bevan, now dean of faculty, put his resignation on top of the pile.

After six months of deliberation between the faculty and the trustees, the board unanimously voted that admission would be considered “without regard to race, color or creed”, and the faculty withdrew their resignations. By then, the young man whose application had spurred the controversy, Howard Kennedy, had already joined the army, but he had set in motion an important debate that shaped the future of FPC.

FPC Becomes Eckerd

When Billy Wireman took over as FPC’s president in 1971, the college was in financial crisis. He needed a quick fix to keep it afloat.

Jack Eckerd was a drugstore magnate serving on FPC’s board of trustees at the time. Wireman pursued Eckerd as a donor, and being a risktaker at heart, Eckerd agreed to donate ten million dollars—the lifeline that FPC needed to survive.

While many assumed the name change was a condition of the gift, it was actually

Wireman’s idea, and he had to convince Eckerd to allow it. By that time, the Church had relinquished control of the college to its trustees, and Wireman (for whom the campus’ iconic chapel is named) felt the old name actually hindered future growth. Eckerd finally agreed and in July 1972, FPC officially became Eckerd College.

Today, Eckerd College is one of the top liberal arts institutions in the country, and has been named among the elite group of Colleges that Change Lives (www.ctcl.org).

MIZE Opens on MLK

Almost three years after he closed his first St. Pete art gallery, artist Chad Mize had an itch. He wanted to open another gallery.

When Blue Lucy closed in 2015 after five years on the bustling 600 block of Central Avenue, Mize was happy to not have the responsibility of a business anymore. But after a while, he realized working from home wasn’t ideal for him.

“I just got to a point where I hit a wall where I’m like ‘I do not want to work at home’. I want to be able to wake up in the morning and come to a space and work and leave it and be able to shut it off,” Mize said.

He missed both the separation between work and home life and the gallery environment he knew so well.

“After I closed my space (Blue Lucy), I got a lot of response of ‘we’re so bummed you’re gone.’ So I felt like I did serve my purpose and I know I’m good at what I do in terms of curation and putting together a gallery space so I wanted to do it again,” he said.

So on March 1, Mize finally made the leap and signed a 5-year lease on a quaint brick storefront on Dr. Martin Luther King Street N. Then after over a month of light renovations, MIZE, his second brick and mortar venture in the St Pete art scene, soft opened to the public on April 13th.

Wedged between Banyan Cafe and Catering and Black Amethyst Tattoo Gallery, his gallery at 689 (Unit C) is located in the heart of Historic Uptown. Mize is familiar with the neighborhood because he painted a mural on the side of Uptown Laundromat across from Round Lake in 2016.

Photo by Steve Aikens “I saw that there was more development on this block (between 7th and 5th Avenue N) and they’re cleaning it up. Also it’s just affordable,” he said. “I looked in the Warehouse Arts District (but) I just wanted to be on a main street. I wanted to still be visible, I didn’t want to be tucked away somewhere.”

The new space, which previously housed half of Growing Up, a kids’ clothing and toy store, is a world away from the popular, ever-changing 600 Block that Blue Lucy called home. But his new block, including the 1926 building that houses four individual stores including MIZE, has its own perks.

“It’s got character and charm,” Mize said of the building.

MIZE is just north of the Fringe District, a collection of small businesses along Dr. Martin Luther King Street N between roughly 1st and 4th Avenue N. Cheaper rent prices than most other major streets in downtown St. Pete, especially Central Avenue, attracted businesses like Planet Retro Records and Star Booty Salon to the area.

On his opening morning, Mize was fresh off hosting his art show “100 Films Part II” at Green Bench Brewing Company the night before. The remaining, unsold art pieces, about 80, now line the walls of the gallery.

Although he wants to do limited edition t-shirts every month, he’s keeping the retail side of the gallery small so he can focus on the art and curation.

Mize also plans for the gallery to be a multipurpose space for hosting small community events and generally wants to make it accessible to the Historic Uptown community. He likened his ambition for the gallery to a “mini Studio@620”, referring to the small but popular arts venue on 1st Avenue South. He’s already in talks with local artists April Seelbach and Daniel Mrgan and Los Angeles-based artist Stephen Palladino to do solo art shows.

On his end, Mize is planning on doing a show featuring gay and lesbian artists which is centered around the St Pete Pride Festival for his grand opening in June, as well as a fruit and floral show for the summer.

But MIZE won’t be the only art gallery on the block for long. Friend, collaborator and creative director of St Pete branding agency Wax & Hive, Jimmy Breen is currently renovating the space adjacent for his own gallery, which was the other half of the former kids’ store.

In the future, Mize envisions a “creative block” with the two galleries, Black Amethyst and Banyan Cafe side by side and a smattering of other small businesses, including a float tank therapy business, St Pete Salt Works.

MIZE opens Saturdays 11am - 7pm. His current exhibit “100 Films Part II” runs through May 20.

Street Art and Bikes: A Perfect Partnership for BikeFriendly, Art-Loving St. Pete

By Tina Stewart Brakebill Ask anyone. Downtown St. Petersburg is flourishing. Look up toward the sky, and you’ll see growth. Look out toward Tampa Bay, and you’ll see growth. This blossoming also is evident in efforts to protect the city’s heart by supporting bike-friendly streets, independent businesses, and the arts. One-of-a-kind murals adorn a range of surfaces from historic low-rise buildings and repurposed warehouses to traffic-control boxes in a constantly growing and changing free gallery spread throughout downtown and beyond. And there is no better way to see this magnificent display than on a bicycle.

The Power of Public Art Bike Tour

Fortunately for both visitors and St. Petersburg locals, bike-friendly streets make that possible. The nonprofit Florida CraftArt and rental company Coast Bike Share have teamed up to create a mural exploration.

Their Power of Public Art Tour takes to downtown streets and alleys the first Saturday of every month. And they make it easy. Don’t worry if you don’t have a bicycle; Coast Bike Share can provide a rental. Don’t

Black Crow: From Seed to Cup

Much like T.S. Eliot, I feel, “I have measured out my life with coffee spoons,” which is why I have hunted for a coffee shop that feels like a cozy living room in my city. No doubt St. Pete’s favorite living room is Black Crow Coffee Company.

Multicolored lights are strung loosely and add a soft glow. Local art and sundry furniture feel natural and unassuming. A man in a fedora plays the piano, filling the room with melody punctuated by the hissing and popping of an espresso maker. Sipping a hot cup of dark roasted Colombian coffee, notes of cherry, lemon and cocoa fill me to the brim.

A personal connection is roasted into every bean at Black Crow Coffee. Owners Deana Hawk and Greg Bauman have a history with brewing a tasty cup of coffee. Bauman has owned Indian Shores Coffee for ten years, and opened Black Crow in 2015 with Hawk.

“Black Crow Coffee is community, plain and simple,” Bauman explained. Living in St. Pete for three decades now, this city is their home. Bauman attributed his love for their home to its creative energy, thriving arts and individuality.

From Serving Coffee to Roasting Coffee

With the success of both their coffee shops, and after much experimenting, in November of 2016 Bauman and Hawk’s passion spilled over into commercially roasting their own beans right here in downtown St. Pete, in the Grand Central District. With the guidance of Metropolis Roasters out of Chicago, they learned what Bauman called, “The satisfying and creative process of turning green beans into that perfect espresso or cup of coffee.”

Truly a combination of art and science, roasting gives Black Crow the ability to author their own story. They partner with transparent, informed suppliers providing beans from Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica and Tanzania. Each small batch is inspected before going into a large, spinning drum with 32 burners. Bauman controls the time, temperature and air flow, making careful notes every 15 seconds for the duration of the roast, which lasts 12 to 14 minutes. Twenty-four hours later the roast is tested to determine the flavors of that origin of bean.

Black Crow Coffee Roasting is a family endeavor. Once Bauman completes the roast, Hawk and their children bag the product. They are roasting and bagging 500-600 pounds of coffee beans each week to supply their two coffee shops, as well as commercial accounts with Stillwaters Tavern, Ichicoro, Southern Bay Bakery, The Bikery, Iberian Rooster and Bella Brava.

As Black Crow has grown one small batch at a time, their connection to the community has grown deeper, much like the complex

flavors of their roasts. The Black Crow Roasting location also serves as a unique recording studio space. Bauman said that at any time a highly caffeinated local musician can be pouring their heart out in song in the same space where the beans are roasted.

Helping Hands in the Community

The owners believe that a helping hand is even better when it is holding a warm cup of coffee. The company philosophy is to “not only to serve great coffee, but to greatly serve our community.” They most recently collaborated with Creative Clay, an organization that seeks to make the arts accessible to residents with disabilities. Black Crow roasted and private-labeled a special release just for the nonprofit, which received 100 percent of the proceeds.

Additionally, they financially support the International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA), which empowers women to achieve meaningful lives, strengthen communities and achieve a sustainable coffee industry.

Black Crow’s generosity even stretches beyond the Bay area. With the turmoil after the storms late last year in the Caribbean, the coffee industry in Puerto Rico had all but been wiped out. Black Crow got involved by donating coffee beans so local cafes could continue to serve their customers. It was a small-but-mighty gesture to provide some taste of normalcy to the residents there in a difficult time.

Coffee has the unique power to offer a sense of comfort, and Black Crow Coffee knows this full well. Honoring the journey coffee takes from seed to cup, and creating a warm community space around their delicious drinks and treats, the owners are inviting you into their living room. Radius Church: The Heart of the City

Espresso machines whir, and the aroma of coffee lingers in Station House on a Friday afternoon, where I’ve met with Blake Clark, lead pastor of Radius Church. He sips iced tea and offers a brief history lesson.

“As cities grew,” Clark said, “churches began to move to the suburbs and separate from the city and function in their own silos.” Favorable rental rates, improved safety and comfort drew people away from urban cores.

Clark hopes his Radius Church will turn that tide, becoming a center of city life through investing in a new location. The church’s new space at 165 13th St. N in downtown St. Petersburg was once AAA offices and storage. Maintaining the industrial aesthetic of the nearly 10,000-squarefoot building, Radius plans to make only minor tweaks such as staining concrete floors and adding wood accents. The structure boasts a large gathering area and many multi-use rooms.

Clark describes the location as sitting between the shopping/dining/ art district of Central Avenue on one side and shelters and service organizations for the homeless on the other.

“We can be the common ground,” he said. By radiating love in every direction, he said, the church hopes to welcome people from all walks of life to its new headquarters.

How does a church find its way to the heart of a community? Clark’s vision is for the building to become a shared community space. Opening an art show? Concert? Support group? Nonprofit board meeting? The church wants to benefit the community by hosting such events.

Clark started Radius Church almost four years ago, meeting on Sundays in rented space at the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club and using coffee shops throughout St. Petersburg as office space.

In March, the church hosted an event with Flying Boat Brewing Co. in which volunteers made 1,000 peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches for the hungry. Participants also were fulfilled by connecting with others, Clark said. “This setting of community is for all and where we feel that we can introduce people to the love of Jesus.”

At the shuffleboard courts on Sundays, members prepare breakfast for all present. One morning, Clark recalled, a homeless man approached him, enticed by the scent of bacon.

“This is the peanut butter-and-jelly church, right?” the man asked. The pastor smiled and nodded at him. “We love that we are known for our love in such a simple way,” Clark said.

Radius Church’s core philosophy is that people can’t have faith without hope and love, Clark said. It hopes to become the heart of the city by sharing -- a bite of a sandwich, a kind word, a welcoming new space downtown.

That would be the middle of the last century, after the privations of World War II had passed, and many Americans were focused on growing careers and families.

The styles developed early in the 1900s and flourished in the 1950s and ‘60s, influencing architecture and urban development along with

Houses of the era offer spacious open-floor plans, exposed beams, floor-to-ceiling windows, deep roof overhangs, sliding doors, patios and verandas, and minimal separation between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Well-suited to Florida living, the designs are experiencing a resurgence.

Only one family has lived in the house at 4701 Paradise Way S, which was designed by Albert L. Reese, who was affiliated with the distinguished firm Harvard Jolly Architecture. Constructed in 1962, the Prairie Style

structure features mitered glass windows, custom cabinetry, and many well maintained original finishes, Realtor Glen Richardson said.

“Screened porches connected by walls of glass doors allow for wonderful air flow, plenty of light, and the opportunity to entertain old Florida style,” reads the listing offered by Smith & Associates Real Estate.

The house sits on a one-third acre corner lot, has a shaded entertaining area, swimming pool, mature trees and landscaping, and a dock.

Another mid-century modern iteration was the second home designed by prominent St. Petersburg architect Sanford M. Goldman, who studied with Frank Lloyd Wright in 1957 and 1958. The house at 3130 Walnut St. NE, on the east side of the Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Golf Club, was built in 1961. It has three levels, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a cantilevered staircase.

“It’s a gem,” Smith & Associates Realtor Frank Malowany said. “It has an open floor plan that gives you the feeling of being outside when you’re inside. We’ve shown it to several people.”

The spacious master bedroom has windows with a view and a balcony that overlooks the saltwater pool deck and back nine of the golf course.

The two distinctive properties were designed by two definitive midcentury St. Petersburg architects.

St. Petersburg Free Clinic Women’s Residence Becomes Certified Safe Haven

Since its beginning in 1989, the St. Petersburg Free Clinic Women’s Residence has helped thousands of women regain control over their lives. Now, it has added certification from the National Alliance of Recovery Residences (NARR).

The Virginia and David Baldwin Women’s Residence provides stable housing and support services to single homeless women between the ages of 18 and 65 while they build the skills they need to be self-sufficient. Participants stay between one and 12 months while making connections within the community and establishing themselves. Programs assist with basic needs that range from food and hygiene supplies to a clothing boutique to assistance obtaining a Florida identification card.

“We are the only program in this area that offers the woman an opportunity to come into a recovery residence for no money for 90 days,” said Cynthia Burnham, who has been residence director since 2012. “I don’t believe there’s another program like that.”

More than 65 percent of women who join the residence program successfully transition to self-sufficiency and stable housing, she said. Of those, more than 90 percent retain their independence. The statistics are emphasized by how much activity the program sees: In one year alone, the home provides shelter and support to 131 women.

In recognition of these achievements, it recently received its Recovery Residence Certification from the Florida Association of Recovery Residences, the statewide division of NARR. The association does not offer providers specific instructions for operating. It uses 38 standards to measure the quality and consistency of support offered.

Doing so allows the residence to offer a broad range of opportunities as it sees fit. The certification program is voluntary.

“Aside from attracting funding opportunities, it speaks highly of the services we provide,” Burnham said. “It lends credibility. It says we know how to do what we say we do.”

Despite the current success of the program, the Baldwin’s Women’s Residence was not always as well-known. Before 2016,

the residence was accommodated in two houses built in 1926 that Burnham said were “falling apart around us.”

The Free Clinic successfully held a $4.5 million fundraising campaign, demolished the dilapidated houses, and built the current structure, which opened in January 2016. At 20,000 square feet, it comprises 40 bedrooms, a large kitchen with teaching areas, a shared dining space, and training rooms for teaching career and life skills.

The clinic also increased its capacity from serving 20 women to housing 50 concurrently.

“We were very low key in the area for many, many years … unless you’ve been in the neighborhood for a while, you wouldn’t know who we were,” Burnham said. “Since the campaign to get the new building, we’ve become more of the community. We’re holding AA meetings in house, for instance, and bringing the community in.”

Community engagement has helped the residence flourish, allowing it to offer the unique and engaging opportunities for which it has become known.

“We offer the option to learn with a mentor, a professional woman from the local community willing to empower our women and expose them to some things they haven’t had the opportunity to do in a while,” Burnham said. “Go to a play, just to feel normal and start doing some of the things they’ve been seeing people do.”

With certification, the women’s residence is looking for funding to expand its mental health counseling services. Group counseling is currently offered, and the hope is to add one-on-one sessions in the building and to bring on a full-time licensed clinical social worker.

Burnham praised the home’s dedicated employees and volunteers.

“We’re defined by our enthusiastic and engaged staff,” she said, “because many of us are in recovery ourselves.”

At least one-third of our childhood is devoted to school. It’s where we learn things like math and history, and the difference between a metaphor and a simile. In addition to learning the official curriculum, we also practice our burgeoning social skills and test our growing independence at school. It plays a significant role in influencing the person we become.

Beginning this fall, The French American School of Tampa Bay (FASTB) will offer an exciting new choice to help guide kids through these formative years.

Recently I met with the couple responsible for bringing this new opportunity to St. Pete: Beth and Willy LeBihan. Their passion for this project is unmistakable, but passion is not the only thing they bring to the table. Their qualifications make it clear they are up to the challenge.

As a native of France, Willy brings firsthand knowledge of the French education system. Born and raised in Maine, Beth offers the American perspective. Students can move easily from one of nearly 500 French international schools to another, because they are all accredited by the Ministry and consistent with the French national curriculum. FASTB also will be accredited by the Florida Department of Education. So, they’ve got the official stuff covered.

New Joy in Mudville

The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Miracle League Nine that day…

A pall-like silence fell upon the field where beautiful children should play…

They stood in tears, holding bats and gloves, shut out from playing the game they love.

Violet’s Field, constructed by the Kiwanis Club Miracle League of the Gulf Beaches, was specifically designed so that special needs children could participate in America’s pastime. But it lay in tatters, torn up, demolished; the pitcher’s mound, base paths and even home plate all gone. The rubberized field was first installed in 2006 and since then hundreds of special boys and girls made their way around the base paths without fear they would get hurt if they fell. But due to the constant barrage of sun and heat and rain, the field started to buckle,

and it became dangerous for the athletes to play. A whole season was cancelled when the company who was going to build the new field bit off more than they could chew and had to abandon the project.

The players could only look through the fence at the dirt, wondering when they could once again play the game that brought them so much joy. But all was not lost! Proving that baseball Angels are not confined to Los Angeles, some good people delivered in the bottom of the ninth.

Many people, including Mayor Rick Kriseman, attended the Miracle League Opening Day on April 14th.

Former Rays skipper (and current Chicago Cubs manager) Joe Maddon’s Respect 90 Foundation teamed up with the Cal Ripken, Sr.’s foundation, Sports Fields Inc. and Clearwater for Youth to rebuild the field in time to start the spring season. The new surface, installed by Sports Fields Inc., is ADA approved and is made up of ¾” shock pad and 1” synthetic turf with sand infill. The kids can now run, pitch, catch and throw to their hearts’ content.

George Stone, President of the Miracle League said, “This group saved our season. Without them, we would have missed another season. It would have been devastating. The kids look forward to this so much.”

Joe Maddon hit the ball out of the park when he said, “We are so proud to be a partner with kids who love the game and get so much joy from playing each week.”

The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation has been having quality at bats too, building 75 completed ball parks in 21 states, impacting over 280,000 kids. The Clearwater for Youth organization is batting 1.000 by showing support for sports programs that encourage children of all levels of society to play and learn together.

If you have a disabled child, feel free to get them involved in the Miracle Baseball League. The field is located at 2950 75th Street North in St Petersburg, part of the Azalea Little League Complex.

The new field is wheelchair and walker friendly and League volunteers are on hand to help. If your child has any disability, they will be allowed to swing for the fences and circle the bases. They will become genuine baseball players. For more information go to www.kiwanisgulfbeaches.com.

Bringing Out YOUR Style Design Inspiration…where do we start on a decorating project?

Many clients come to me asking for help in decorating their home.

Some know exactly what they want while others don’t know how to create the look they want, or they don’t know what they want. It’s important for me to discover their design style. When I visit their home, I will ask them about artwork on the walls, items that have a special meaning, maybe they have a beloved worn rug that has been handed down through generations and must be included in the design.

Sometimes their closet will shed some light on what style and colors they like. I may ask them to show me their favorite outfit. If they have a new home, that poses a challenge to me since I don’t have anything to go by. Bare walls and concrete floors are a blank canvas. In that case the design process may start back at the showroom in finding a beautiful area rug, pillow or other item of interest.

By Tara Britton, co-founder of Market Mafia St. Pete plays host to a plethora of makers’ markets. There are so many, in fact, that sometimes it’s hard to keep up. Check in with us monthly to learn more about the St. Pete market scene, find upcoming events and show your local support by shopping small.

Many of our local brick-and-mortar businesses recognize the value in continuing to participate in local community events, including markets, even after they have established a physical retail location. From establishing new customers to driving foot traffic back into their shops, business owners showcasing their wares at our local markets find a variety of benefits to stepping out of their shops, and onto the streets.

Gray Space

Gordon and Jamie Hall, owners of men’s clothing boutique Gray Space, are celebrating the one-year anniversary of their physical location this month. However, the duo started out by selling their goods at local markets.

“We wanted to get our concept in front of as many potential customers as possible, which we thought would assist with market research as well, no pun intended,” Jamie said. Since opening their doors, they continue to participate in pop-up markets throughout town, including St. Pete Moonlight Market, Localtopia, Westfest, and more.

According to Jamie, there are many reasons they keep coming back to the markets: “We find that markets are a fun way to meet new customers and catch up with existing customers. From a business standpoint, there is more often a sense of urgency at markets. From a personal perspective, it allows us to interact and share our love of the Burg with out-of-towners. Finally, as small business owners, it gives us a platform to interact and share products from our store with a larger target audience.”

Blossom and Shine

Blossom and Shine owner, Julie Dye, calls her participation in local markets her business’ “bread and butter”. The jewelry maker finds different audiences at different locations, noting most of her customers originally find

her brand at a market, and many of her on-the-spot buyers are tourists.

Julie has noticed that market participation often leads to more online sales afterwards, and that locals are most likely to visit the studio. Markets create opportunities to connect with shoppers, to invite them to visit her studio for a more one-to-one experience, and to discuss her custom work.

Blossom and Shine celebrates one year in their brick-and-mortar studio this month. The jewelry vendor can be found every week at the Saturday Morning Market. Julie’s studio is open to visitors by appointment, and also each month during the Second Saturday ArtWalk.

Black Crow Coffee

Black Crow Coffee Co. has been a presence in St. Pete since their cafe opened in September of 2015. They started out in a physical shop, and have made community involvement a priority since opening.

Deana Hawk, owner, feels strongly that it’s “important to see and know the owners”. Deana and her partner and coffee roaster, Greg Bauman, are the faces market goers will see when they encounter them at an event, not staff.

Their participation in community events is typically tied to an opportunity to give back, and not for profit.

According to Deana, part of Black Crow’s focus is to serve the community, and “the community is beyond the doors of my business”. She said that the rewards of participating in local events include: meeting tourists, establishing new customers, receiving feedback from regulars about their products and the shop, opportunity to connect with other business owners, a push to step outside of her own comfort zone, and the affirmations about how Black Crow Coffee is impacting St. Pete. They can be found regularly at the Corey Avenue Sunday Market on St. Pete Beach and at Localtopia.

People of St. Pete: Dawn Wilder

Photo by Evan Sigmund St. Pete is celebrated for its fabulous weather, beautiful vistas, world-class food scene and thriving cultural atmosphere. But if you live here, then you know it’s the people that truly make St. Pete special, especially those people we see every day: the store clerks and wait-staff, the bus drivers and baristas, the postal workers and park staff, the custodians and teachers. It is easy to take these folks for granted, but each of them has a story. Here at Green Bench Monthly, we want to do our part in recognizing the value of their stories. So, beginning this month we will shine a light on one of the many folks who make St. Pete special.

Who is Dawn Wilder?

Today, that light shines on Dawn Wilder. Dawn is many things.

She is a certified personal trainer and yoga instructor, a business owner, a divorced mother (of five kids ranging from 10 to 20 years old!) and a diabetes prevention teacher. She is a busy woman. Her day typically starts well before 5AM with an extra-large triple-shot unsweetened café mocha and doesn’t end until nearly 10PM. Despite the potential for chaos, it’s rare to see her without a smile. She really seems to have found a sense of balance. Finding a time to sit down and talk was a challenge, but I persisted.

I wanted to know more about her and how she does it.

Why St. Pete?

Dawn is originally from South Carolina, but when she moved here in 1996, she immediately fell in love with the community. It just felt like home.

In 2002, her husband’s job took them away and for seven years, she and her growing family lived in Europe, first in Amsterdam and then Paris. She has fond memories of her time in Europe BUT she also really missed home. As she told me, she often “dreamed about St. Pete” during her years in Europe.

When I asked her why she loved St. Pete so much, she quickly replied “it’s perfect.” It feels small but offers big. Paris was great but she was thrilled when the family finally came home to St. Pete in 2009.

From Stay-At-Home Mom To...

Since that time, Dawn’s path has curved and widened a bit. She has transitioned from (what she describes as) “just a stay-at-home wife and mother” to a divorced mother of five that works a lot! She acknowledges that the divorce and the uncertainty that accompanied the process was “the darkest, loneliest, and most stressful time” of her life but she also knows that she emerged stronger than ever. Many things have changed over the last few years, but one thing that hasn’t is that her kids—Caroline, Peyton, Chloe,

Charles, and Roman—remain “job number one.” Her oldest has left their Snell Isle home for university life in Paris, but the four youngest remain at home and their lives are as full as hers! Just juggling their basketball, football, and cheerleading schedules is a challenge. It’s a good thing she is feeling stronger than ever because keeping up with their activities requires planning and stamina!

Jobs and More Jobs

Dawn’s work as a personal trainer and yoga instructor also is a source of joy and juggling. Dawn knows that fitness requires both physical and mental awareness. It’s not just about heavy lifting. When she is with a client, she emphasizes the importance of “being in the moment” because those moments build your life, not just muscles! She brings that same mindset to her teaching. As part of the YMCA team, she facilitates a year-long diabetes prevention program at St. Anthony’s and for the City of St Petersburg. When I asked her about this program, she immediately exclaimed, “I love it!”. She helps students become mindful of the way everyday choices can change their future paths. It also offers her a way to give back to the community she loves. It’s a win-win.

Working It Out

I ended our conversation by asking Dawn how she manages it all. She laughed and shared her Wilder Fitness business motto: “as a mother of five, fitness keeps me alive.” It’s a great tagline for potential training clients, but this motto also describes the way she approaches her teaching and her life. As she told me, “I am the strongest I have ever been in my life – both physically and mentally – thanks to mindfulness and a healthy, holistic approach to life.” This attitude clearly has helped her find balance in this hectic and stressful world. I admit I am impressed. She really is working it out.

3) La V This DTSP staple of date-night-worthy Vietnamese food that won’t break the bank is also open late, and reliably pleases both ends of the gastronomic rainbow. No vegan-as-afterthought here, my friends.

4) Moon Under Water Indian food is generally veg-friendly, and can be found in spades at British restaurant, Moon Under Water. The Beach Drive spot boasts a variety of Indian curries, as well as the hearty English classics you might expect. Their Shepherd’s Pie even comes in both Original and Vegetarian!

5) Bodega When it comes to ease and crowd pleasing, Bodega is one to watch. Fresh, super-casual, non-pretentious, large portions, and plentiful options for both sides guarantee satisfaction.

6) Meze 119 Just a block or so from the Sundial, this is your movienight go-to. It is all-vegetarian, but fear not: my open-minded, meatchowing date really digs this spot. We love being able to try a number of dishes, the perk of tapas-style dining. I recommend telling your server some things you particularly like or dislike, and then ordering a chef ’s choice sampler.

7) Hawkers This sit-down restaurant compendium of Pan Asian street food is super-flavorful, reasonably-priced, and has something for everyone.

Their Lettuce Wraps are particularly delish. This place is on my speed dial for take-out.

8) Pia’s Okay okay, this is in Gulfport, but it’s only about a ten minute drive from Downtown St. Pete. Pia’s is perfection: unpretentious Tuscan cuisine in a cozy, old-world setting. The main menu is traditional Southern Italian, but their specials show a truly exceptional level of care for their vegan guests. Each week, they present creative, plant-based versions of a classic soup, salad, antipasti, primi, entree, and dessert. Now that is doing it right.

9) Reading Room The Reading Room menu is always changing, but carnivores and veggie-sauruses alike are guaranteed a seasonal, considered, if a little pricey, meal. You can’t go wrong with the Veggie Plate, a collection of plant-based yummies the kitchen goddesses created that day. Just don’t forget to make a reservation - you’re going to need it!

10) Cider Press Cafe I’ve saved what may be the most controversial for last, but stick with me here. Cider Press Cafe is always evolving, and my non-veg partner now loves this place just as much as I do. He recently went nuts over a daily special: Beyond Burger on a pretzel bun with beer cheese and caramelized onions. Positively mouthwatering. We both crave the delicious and super-filling Fiesta Salad, and their Corn Chowder is so tasty that no one even pays attention to the fact that it’s raw. For realsies.

Just look at all the restaurants you can enjoy together! No more arguing, okay? Go forth and dine in peace!

Downtown Developments

We realize it’s difficult to keep track of all the new developments downtown. Luckily, we’ve done the research, so you don’t have to.

A new Key West taco joint is joining the 600 block! Amigos Tortilla Bar is opening at 681 Central Avenue, a space that has sat vacant for over a year. They will be serving their famous square tacos as well as other Mexican inspired fare including their popular Kitchen Sink Nachos, which feature chicken, beef, and carnitas. If all goes as planned, Amigos hopes to be open this fall.

Last month, the City of St. Pete celebrated the topping out of the new St. Pete Police Department Headquarters. The headquarters complex will consist of multiple buildings across a 6.3 acre site. The main building will feature 170,000 square feet spread over three floors which will hold much of the office space for the agency’s police divisions. Also in the complex is a four-story, 321 car parking garage and a central energy plant. While the main building has topped out, the project won’t be completed until March 2019.

Flûte & Dram, a high-end champagne and caviar bar, opened in April at 234 Beach Drive,

a year after it was originally announced. The bar features a wide array of champagnes, from highend to more moderately-priced varieties, as well as an assortment of whiskeys and sparkling wines for non-champagne drinkers. While their food specialty is their caviar they also have a few cheese plates if caviar isn’t your thing.

In residential news, the first phase of The Sabal Smart Homes, located at 532 4th Avenue South, is now complete. Units at The Sabal are a cross between a townhouse and condo, with the building having two front units and two back units each with a private one-car garage in the rear of the building. With high-end finishes, high-efficiency features and a rooftop deck, the units have been selling well. So far, three of the four units in the first phase have sold and the units in phase two, which is currently under construction, just hit the market.

The EDGE District recently welcomed a new event space and pop-up venue. OpenHouse St. Pete, located at 1113 Central Avenue, features 4,500 square feet of space for meetings

and a variety of different types of events. The building also has a full service kitchen and two patios. Just to give you an idea on the type of events OpenHouse might bring to the Burg, they recently hosted a co-working space for The Doyenne, a women’s professional business group. Be sure to keep an eye on this place!

In the St. Pete Innovation District, the owners of Tampa’s Oxford Exchange are opening The Peabody, a library-themed cafe concept inspired by the George Peabody Library at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. With walls covered with books, the cafe will be located in the new Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Research building. The idea is to have a common place for researchers, doctors, and the general public to connect and engage each other. It is scheduled to open September 21st. It will be the first restaurant in the Innovation District.
