Happy Pets Mean Happy Pet Owners

As a pet owner who worked in the corporate world for 25 years and travelled often, Jan Bonetto, owner of the Saint Petersburg Pet Sitting and Dog Walking service, BES Pets, understands how important it is for pet owners to know that their pets are in excellent hands when they can’t be with them.

After what she describes as a “life altering event”, Jan decided it was time to make some changes and to spend more time doing what she loved. She knew she’d always enjoyed helping out her friends and neighbors by caring for their pets when asked, so four years ago she turned her love for animals into a new career path. She noted that there

is often a big difference between hiring a professional and asking a friend to pet sit.

“To me the importance of hiring a pet sitter is that they’ve made a business commitment to be there,” purrs Bonetto in her genteel North Carolina drawl.

“I set a time frame, and I will do the list of things that needs to be done. I will commit to staying there for 45 minutes to an hour.

So the dogs have my 100 percent attention. The cats, if they want my attention they can have it, but most of them ignore me,” she laughs.

“When I walk dogs, if I’ve committed to a thirty minute walk, I set my timer, and often times if it’s a nice day and I don’t

have anywhere else to be, it’s longer than the thirty minutes,” says Bonetto. While she’s in a client’s home with pets, she takes a cue directly from them, and does what they seem to like; things like playing fetch or being brushed. “It’s important to me that the animals get my full attention,” she states.

Trained in animal CPR, Bonetto’s number one priority is the safety of her clients’ pets.

She notes that when she walks dogs: “I avoid other dogs, for the safety and security of the animals. You never know what you’re walking towards, so I try to avoid other animals.”

She always makes sure to send a picture and a text to keep pet parents informed about how their fur babies are doing. “It’s

the animals’ well-being that I’m focused on, but I also want the owners to be able to relax,” quips Bonetto. “It makes me accountable but also gives them a little bit of comfort.” Jan also helps out her clients by doing little things like watering plants and bringing in mail for folks who are out of town.

Bonetto remarks that working with animals is “very rewarding because the animals are so true. If they’re happy you know it. If they’re not happy you know it. And where else can you walk into a workspace... and they’re that happy and excited and jumping around to see you?”

St. Petersburg Sustainability Council Publishes 2017 Calendar – Legendary Trees of St. Petersburg Why Trees? Why Now? The City of St. Petersburg is currently crafting its Climate Action & Resilience Plan. To grow the roots for this initiative, the St. Petersburg Sustainability Council has launched ReTree St. Pete and declared 2017 The Year of the Tree!

Communities around the country are engaged in Urban Reforestation, from the urban core, through yards, neighborhoods, parks, and streets. Trees have never been more important. Rising temperatures, rainfall changes and escalating CO2 point to urban reforestation as the low-tech way to cool our homes, reduce our energy use, and provide oxygen. Neighborhoods with a healthy canopy have higher property values, and trees reduce crime while contributing to an increased sense of well-being.

• Trees provide Foundational Awareness of our personal role in adapting and reducing our impacts to climate change; and help citizens answer the question… What can I do?

• Trees are the ultimate multi-taskers, providing adaptation (heat and energy-use reduction), mitigation (greenhouse gas and pollutant reduction) and resilience.

• City programs such as bikeshare, walking trail systems, the Healthy St. Pete project and crime reduction are enhanced by a

An African Proverb tells us “the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is now”. Folks who love trees planted many historic and legendary trees around St. Petersburg throughout the last century. The St. Petersburg Sustainability Council has published the Legendary Trees of St. Petersburg Calendar for 2017. This Calendar showcases the spectacular photographs and legends of the some of the most historic, beautiful, and important trees across the City of St. Petersburg. The Council put out a call for submissions of our storied trees, which came in from all parts of the city. We partnered with the Morean Arts Center’s Beth Reynolds and her Photography Club. Her students photographed most of the images used for the calendar, emphasizing the special and varied light at play in trunks and leaves.

The Legendary Trees include the Royal Palms of Sunken Gardens, the Charles Oak of Roser Park, the Twin Banyans of Straub Park, Red Mangrove Tunnel of Weedon Island, the Museum of Fine Arts Kapok or “Bombax” tree, and many others. The calendar tells the story of these amazing trees and presents them to the public in an engaging format that can be enjoyed throughout the year, reminding the citizens of St. Petersburg of the importance of trees to the well-being of our city and its neighborhoods.

Et Cultura Festival Showcases Vibrant St. Pete Art, Film and Technology

St. Pete’s art, culture and innovation culminated in the first annual Et Cultura, a five-day long festival hosting locally sourced creators and performers. From November 16-20, guests could experience the heart of our city for a $25 all-access pass, earning them entrance to premiere films and live music. The crossplatform, multi-day event offered something for everyone: a weekend of continuous concerts, plenty of compelling visual art from every medium, and a 180-plus booth indie market with vendors of every specialty.

Et Cultura began at Station House along First Avenue South, where the concepts of technology, entrepreneurship and networking were wrestled with. The floors of Station

The festival celebrated all of these, and has achieved what no other event has—it united all aspects of the artistic community in one event, large enough to span multiple days. Et Cultura not only placed St. Pete’s beauty and creativity on the mainstage, but also assured us that it is not going anywhere.

Get a Fresh Perspective from a St. Petersburg Preservation Walking Tour

By Amy Beeman In St. Petersburg’s short 128 years, acres of scrub land have been thoughtfully developed into a beautiful little city where people come to enjoy life, which was the plan all along. Emily Elwyn, president of the board of St. Petersburg Preservation, architectural historian and tour guide extraordinaire, explained this to our tour group last month as we took the organization’s Original Downtown Historic Walking Tour.

Elwyn said when the founding developers needed a hook, a reason to get people to come to their newly established city, they decided, “The only thing we want to sell in St. Petersburg is the Florida dream.

You can pick an orange off a tree, you can catch a fish out of the bay. The weather is fabulous…so really that’s what was encouraging people to come here.”

All these years later, Elwyn

and her team at St. Petersburg Preservation want to keep that Florida dream alive, not only for the 15 million visitors who visit The Sunshine City and the surrounding beaches every year, but also for St. Pete’s more than a quarter-million residents. That’s why St. Petersburg Preservation’s mission is to “advocate, educate and celebrate” all that makes St. Petersburg special.

“I think we can all agree that St. Petersburg has a very unique feel. It feels like someplace so different than any other place we’re going to find in Florida,” said Elwyn. “We try to find ways to protect our city, but also encourage thoughtful redevelopment of our city, so we want to have the great sparkling condos on Beach Drive, but also want the authentic older buildings you’ll see on this tour.”

Our small group followed Elwyn along Central Avenue around the “First Block”, where

The Women’s Town Improvement Association building (now the Scientology building) was constructed in 1913. In 1931, an Art-Deco styled cast stone storefront was installed, which was later uncovered during a 1998 renovation.

she told us about the history of the Detroit Hotel, the first building constructed in St. Petersburg in 1888; as well as other original structures along Central Avenue between Second and Third Street North, including the Michigan Building and the St. Charles Building, which was built by a female developer in 1904.

As the tour circled around the block to First Avenue North, history intermingled with new development as beeping trucks and the thuds of heavy machinery announced the construction of the 40-story ONE Building across from Ringside Cafe on Second Street North.

While it is St. Petersburg Preservation’s goal to maintain the historic integrity of the original buildings in the city, Elwyn acknowledges that progress is also part of the evolution of cities. “We want 12

these businesses to continue to be a vibrant success, continue to be used, but we would love to see a thoughtful way to continue to reuse it. We don’t want to freeze it in time, but we also know that this is what makes our city special,” she said. “At St. Pete Preservation, we’re continuing to find ways to try to work with the owners— try to work with the city—to encourage the community to really let the city know that this block is special and that this block matters to people.”

Along the tour we learn about the Binnie Bishop hotel on First Avenue North, which opened in 1910 and was originally a blacksmith shop, before the owner saw that he could make more money if he opened a hotel. We can see that parts of the cast-iron storefront are still intact in front of what is now Yard of Ale.

Further up on First Avenue, we’re told about the locally founded Women’s Town Improvement Association building (now the Scientology building), which housed the group who were integral in getting those all-important sidewalks built downtown during a time when horses regularly mingled with the townsfolk.

Across the street at Williams Park, we learned that originally it was a place where you could tie up your cow or pig. It also evolved into an area where people gathered to play games like horseshoes

A lot of interesting and fun facts were packed into the one-hour tour, providing a fresh perspective about our great city to even a longtime resident like myself.

Weedon Guided Hikes Every Saturday

Who: EVERYBODY! (Ages 6 years old and up)
