Originally playing their games at South Waterfront Park near current day Al Lang Stadium, the Kids & Kubs now call the field at Northshore park home. Not your average softball team, these amazing athletes have to be at least 75 years

We Can Do It St. Pete:

Women and WWII

By Tina Stewart Brakebill In December 1941, the United States entered into a war that had been raging for several years. By the time it ended nearly four years later, an estimated 70 to 85 million civilians and military personnel had perished either directly from the war or from war-related disease and famine, including approximately 420,000 Americans. About 500 American war-related deaths were women, but that relatively small number belies the extraordinary contributions they made at home and on the war front.

“This is My War, Too” In early May 1942, Congress passed an act that allowed women to join the U.S. military in non-combat positions, resulting in the creation of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), Women Appointed for Voluntary Emergency Services (WAVES), Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS), and Semper Paratus Always Ready Serve (SPARS). The government also launched a vigorous campaign to encourage women to enlist as a way to do their part “for their country’s sake” and to get men “home sooner.”

Like the men’s branches, female units were racially segregated.

(The WAVES and the SPARS didn’t allow black women to enlist at all until 1944.) Still, local African Americans served their country in proportionally higher numbers than whites. In St. Petersburg, women of all races proved eager to answer the nation’s call. When a military recruiter arrived in town to interview possible candidates, so many women showed up that the enlister’s stay was extended by two days.

Military women worked primarily as secretaries and nurses, but some stepped into nontraditional roles such as mechanics, flight instructors, air traffic controllers, and weather forecasters.

“Do the Job HE Left Behind” Government literature also pushed women to step into the jobs left by men serving in the military. As one poster noted: “The more women at work, the sooner we will win!” Again, women answered the call. They continued to work in traditional female roles, and as the Tampa Morning Tribune noted in 1942, they “invaded” other spaces, taking on jobs traditionally viewed as off limits. Unfortunately, race still dictated job availability in Tampa Bay, so the first local ads recruiting women to be linotype operators, mechanics, and chauffeurs were aimed at white women.

The government also urged homemakers and female college students to join the “Women’s Land Army” and the “U.S Crop Corps” to help clear fields. The Tampa Morning Tribune reported that women also took over “virtually all the cultivating and harvesting.” This may have been a slight exaggeration, but by summer 1942, nearly 25 percent of Florida farm workers were women — the highest in the nation.

St. Petersburg hired 11 women to work as bus and trolley operators, another first. And in the summer of 1943, the St. Petersburg Times reported that Southern Dairies had hired its first “lady milkman.” The newspaper praised the move and took care to note that this shift was only “for the duration.”

“Of Course I Can” Although women left home in record numbers to enlist or take on wage work, most served as volunteers and in more traditional homebased female roles. In St. Petersburg, they were encouraged to “share their space” and welcome new recruits into their homes. Thousands of soldiers in training filled every room of the city’s many hotels that were appropriated as military barracks and hospitals. To help save materials for the war effort, women recycled, grew Victory Gardens, served on ration boards, and organized salvage drives. St. Petersburg’s Charlotte Harris recycled so many newspapers (which were used in manufacturing explosives) that the U.S. Victory Waste Paper Campaign crowned her “Salvage Queen.”

Women also took the lead in selling war bonds. Fannye Ponder, a St. Petersburg native and president of the Florida Federation of Colored Women’s Clubs,” was heralded for selling $85,000 worth of bonds. She achieved such success despite the fact that segregation dictated when and where African Americans could participate as wage workers or volunteers. To partially combat this discrimination, two Gibbs High

School teachers organized the Women’s Army for National Defense (WAND), which enabled young black women to aid the war effort in non-military ways. Young white women also were recruited to entertain the troops. A beauty contest held at the pier in St. Petersburg crowned the “Queen of the Airforce,” and local women organized the “Bomb-aDears” to socialize with and entertain soldiers in nearby training camps.

The St. Petersburg Times reported on their visits and dance efforts with its “Briefs from the Bomb-a-Dears” column, noting in 1943 that the men seemed to have “a special fondness” for them.

“So Proudly We Serve(d)” Women took advantage of many opportunities. In 1942, St. Petersburg native, attorney, and feminist Mary Lou Baker became the second woman elected to the Florida Legislature. She sponsored groundbreaking legislation allowing married women to manage their own properties and make contracts without a husband’s signature. She was voted out in 1946 after the Times withdrew its earlier endorsement, noting it was time for women to return to their “proper place.” Although the 1950s ushered in a return to traditional ideas about “appropriate” female behavior, the war years had revealed the depths of women’s capabilities, helping to lay the foundation for a movement that defied the notion that women had a “proper place” and changing America forever.

Casual Co-working, No Commitment

By Erin Cody These days more and more of us work remotely. Working from home is great, but sometimes you just want to get out into the world.

Sure, there are co-working organizations you can join, but memberships can be pretty pricey, especially if you’ll only be using them here and there. I’ve been on the hunt for those sweet spots where you can comfortably grab a coffee, set up, plug in, and get to work. Technically you can do this anywhere, but a precious few venues actually invite people to get work done by providing a quiet space with strong wifi, charging stations, and no dirty looks from employees when you hunker down for a few hours.

Co-workers Welcome One shining example of this is Grassroots Kava House. Located at Central and 9th, this friendly spot serves up delicious kava, kratom, coffee, tea, and an array of snacks. Downstairs tends to be a bit

more chatty, while upstairs usually hosts folks working or studying.

Grassroots not only accepts, but invites co-working. “When we designed Grassroots, we kept in mind the needs of those who work remotely,” says owner and co-founder Kenneth Hoyumpa. “We have ample, easily accessible outlets and USB charging ports; reliable, high speed wifi is also crucial. We gladly welcome co-working as it is at the core of our culture. People can study or work at all hours of operation, including nights and weekends.”

Another welcoming option is In-Vision Creative Cafe at 16th St. N and 3rd Ave. This venue has a setup ideal for both artists and those who just need to dive into their laptops. With a genial atmosphere and creative clientele, they offer customers free shared desk space with fast wifi, charging stations, and access to their gaming center. Printers and scanners are also available, and a $10 day pass scores you access to art supplies and a dual-monitor iMac with all the programs plus bells n’ whistles. “Freebie Friday” is the ideal time to drop in, as you’ll receive a free drink, one hour of time at a VIP workstation, and free access to the art studio and VIP lounge.

Old Faithful Of course, there is always old faithful - the library! There’s no need to buy anything, quiet is strictly enforced, and you have all sorts of resources at your fingertips.

I’ve also recently taken to meeting up with other friends who work remotely and doing so together. Even if you just go to someone’s house to work beside them, the change of venue can help you focus and stay on task. With so many people going remote in recent years, you likely have a number of friends who are good candidates for such an arrangement.

Mix up your routine! As with workouts, individual output can flourish under new circumstances. Get out of your home office, ban that chair at Starbucks, and find a venue that will be both conducive to work and happy to see you.

Raising Locals: Choose Your Own Adventure at the New St. Pete Pier Playground

By Vandi Carmella and Denielle Kennett It’s not surprising that unstructured play can nurture children’s social and cognitive development.

You know unstructured play — those increasingly rare moments when kids run free, play make-believe, and aren’t pigeonholed into any certain type of play. And yet, so many activities and play spaces leave little room for imagination.

Luckily, a new movement in playground design has tended toward the abstract, and that trend was not missed when designing the playground at the soon-to-open St. Pete Pier.

Ontario-based playground design and build company Earthscape Play led the design process and is bringing a completely custom and unique play space to downtown St. Petersburg this spring. The sheer scale and $1 million price tag alone promise a playground unlike any in the area, but the details and creative process behind it are a story of its own.

“There’s definitely a strong presence of story and storytelling here,” explains Nathan Schleicher, concept designer for Earthscape Play. The design process, with Nathan at the helm, began in mid-2017 with sketches that look much different than the finished product.

The Design The original design started as a garden scene. Nathan recalls the idea as being reminiscent of the movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids with the playground setting a child’s backyard and a focal point a large Benoist plane (conceptually left behind by the child). A serpentining water hose slide also made it into the sketches, but, as plans changed, the only element of the original design to move forward was the Benoist plane.

That plane eventually evolved into a shipwreck as the concept turned marine. The new design, according to Nathan, felt more relevant to St. Petersburg as it paid homage to the shoreline and its importance to the city.

Working collaboratively with the City of St. Petersburg, architects, and engineers, Nathan and his team honed the design and developed a loose storyline that follows baby sea turtles as they make their way to the sea.

The play space transitions from a Junior Play Area for kids ages 2 to 5 set on the beach to a more vertical Senior Play Area for those ages 5 to 12 figuratively set in the depths of the sea, with plenty of space to run and play in between via the pathways and gathering spaces designed jointly with W Architecture.

An Abstract Space While the marine theme is apparent throughout, the terms of play are limitless. Nathan ensures that kids of all ages will be “inspired by the abstraction of the space.” Elements of the playground were intentionally designed to allow playground visitors to choose their own adventures and give them not just a physical workout, but a cognitive one, too.

Take the Osprey’s Nest climbing structure — it purposefully omits any bird allusion. Here, Nathan imagines, children can pretend they are on a dome on Mars or a cave in the mountains; how each structure is played with really depends on the imagination and whims of the kids.

A Playground for All Below the surface and mirroring the city itself, inclusivity is another important feature of the St. Pete Pier playground. Structure and pathway openings are large enough for wheelchair access, but the nuanced inclusion doesn’t end there. Safety precautions for those with visual impairments and quiet retreats for those with sensory needs are also included in the design.

Some Like it Not-So-Hot As with anything in the Sunshine City, temperature is a major factor to consider. No shade sail is in the plans for phase one of the installation, but plenty of mature trees will give much needed respite from the sun. Other considerations, like a northern-facing slide located near shade trees and the use of natural materials in the playground, offer more safeguards.

The Next Steps A post-occupancy study will be conducted two weeks after the anticipated late-spring 2020 grand opening date. This study will evaluate the flow of kids in the space and how they are interacting with the various elements while helping shape potential plans for phase two of the installation.

And yes, Nathan will be bringing his two young children along to test out the playground themselves during this time. If you ask him what he’s most excited to see in person, it’s the giant kraken and seaweed tower. “They’re larger than life,” he says.

By Tina Stewart Brakebill St. Pete is celebrated for its fabulous weather, beautiful vistas, world-class food scene, and thriving cultural atmosphere but the people of St. Pete truly make this city something special. In appreciation, each month Green Bench Monthly shines a light on one of the many people that make St. Pete unique.

This month we’re shining that light on Michelene Everett. Born in New York City, Everett graduated with a degree in hospitality and tourism management from the Fairleigh Dickinson University. As a seasoned professional event planner, she relocated to the Tampa Bay region in 2015 with big plans. Since then, she has launched her own business while also using her formidable skills to fully engage in efforts to make our community better.

The belief that we can change the world if we engage with our communities has led to Everett’s involvement with a variety of local organizations, including Girl Scouts of West Central Florida, the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance, Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg, and the League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg Area. She knows that changing the world often starts right next door, especially in a community like St. Petersburg, where neighborhoods make the city someplace special.

Understanding that citizens can “create their own legacy,” she is committed to doing the work. She graduated from the Pinellas Citizens University and the Council of Neighborhood Associations Leadership Program in 2018, served as president of the Historic Kenwood Neighborhood Association, and now is on the Historic Kenwood’s partnership committee, a volunteer program to help neighbors in need. “I believe that we are blessed to be a blessing to others,” she said. “Love thy neighbor, America.”

Changing the World: One Vote at a Time Everett strongly believes that there is “nothing more American” than being civically engaged. We have the power to help determine what kind of country we live in, if we get involved,” she said. She has hosted "You Should Run" workshops on behalf of Ruth's List Florida to recruit female political candidates and managed a campaign that collected more than 18,000 petitions for Florida Amendment 4, the voting rights restoration effort. Over the next year, she is committing her time and energy to get the vote out by uniting people “on issues, not political parties.” Her socialmedia campaign “encourages voter participation and engagement by allowing everyday Floridians to share their most personal stories on issues like health care, education, and gun violence.” Anyone can be part of this campaign. Sitting here writing this letter of food love to y’all, I’m huddled up in a blanket with fuzzy socks and the heater cranked trying to thaw out enough to type. However, I’m hoping by the time it reaches you, Florida will get with the program and all of these wrapped beauties can be enjoyed in their natural habitat… sunshine! So fingers crossed, March. You can do it! Without further ado, whether stuffed, wrapped, or pocketed (if you will), I give you three of my favorite handheld munchies.

Let’s start out down in the Grand Central District, at bougainvillea and evil eye adorned Baba. With a café open for lunch and adjoining dinner spot, you can’t go wrong. I adore the freshness of their Falafel Pita stuffed with homemade hummus and babaganoush. Order a side of tabouli as a healthier choice or if you’re feeling daring nab a slice of one of their rotating desserts like the lavender vanilla pound cake for a sweet ending.

Moving farther into the heart of downtown, we find ourselves at the new chef-driven salad/wrap spot brought to you by the Benstocks from Il Ritorno fame. Greenstock has curated options or you can create your own. I decided to mix it up and create my own. With this option, you get to choose two greens, four stocks, two finishes, and a dressing. I went with the pea shoots and romaine with mushrooms, carrots, parmesan, hard boiled egg, toasted pepitas, and turmeric tahini. I also opted to add chicken for protein. The wrap is definitely large enough to share with a friend or bring back to the office and munch on later.

Three’s a charm this month and we round out our list at a spot that’s been a go-to for as long as I can remember (literally, my parents used to sneak these into the movie theater in the ‘90s). You can check out

Athenian Garden at either their Tyrone spot or on 4th Street. Whichever you choose, their Gyro is a must! Loaded high with slices of meat and tzatziki, these pitas are the best! (Warning: as amazingly delicious as tzatziki is, it has copious amounts of garlic that make it not super friendly as a first date food, unless you want to play survival of the fittest.)

The Rainbow Housing Coalition may be the most important local organization you’ve never heard of. That’s about to change. The St. Petersburg nonprofit is on a mission to see that local LGBTQ+ folks, particularly seniors and those living with disabilities, have access to quality housing that doesn’t break the bank. These individuals can face challenges like discrimination, and even abuse, with assistedliving or retirement communities. The Rainbow Housing Coalition is committed to improving lives by connecting LGBTQ+ residents with welcoming, safe, and affordable housing.

Changing Lives Since its inception in 2001, the Rainbow Housing Coalition has had quite a journey. “We shifted from serving disadvantaged youth who found themselves homeless to focusing on the older LGBTQ+ community, simply because there were several other organizations beginning to provide this sort of assistance to the young,” explains founder and board member Bob Pope. “The elderly, having been passed over for advancement and discriminated against throughout much of their lives, can have a very difficult time meeting their dayto day-needs, much less planning for their retirement years. It is this community, as well as those living with disabilities, that we now assist, with the hope that a coalition of organizations can one day come together for a multigenerational platform.”

The organization is working toward offering its own living accommodations. Among other things, that means fundraising. “Our goal will be limited at first to raising enough funds to purchase a building to house six to eight persons, which has been tentatively set at $260,000,” Pope says.

The board will continue working with other organizations and governmental bodies toward its ultimate goal of opening a multistory building in which it can serve and care for those with HIV, the elderly, those living with disabilities, and a multigenerational LGBTQ+ clientele.

Get Involved Want to get involved with this organization and help make its dream a reality? Attend a quarterly community meeting to learn more. “Community meetings offer us an opportunity to gain valuable insight into what is happening in our area and to meet folks who are interested in helping, like other organizations engaging in affordable housing projects, builders, developers, investors, those seeking partnerships,” says Cleo Chitester, Rainbow Housing Coalition secretary and board member. “We also want to meet those who are in need of affordable housing and people who share our vision and want to lend a helping hand by spreading the word. Together, we work to brainstorm ways that we can grow and help LGBTQ+ and people living with disabilities find safe and affirmed affordable housing.”

Getting To Know Our Neighborhoods: Historic Kenwood

By Tina Stewart Brakebill We love our neighborhoods in St. Pete! This appreciation is easy to understand. Distinctive neighborhoods can provide a sense of family, community, and connection that may be hard to find in a large city.

From pink streets to brick avenues, charming bungalows to shiny high rises, and everything in-between, St. Pete has a neighborhood that will make you feel at home. From time to time, we will celebrate the vibrancy of these diverse mini-communities by featuring one of the many Neighborhood Associations (NA) devoted to enhancing the quality of life within their neighborhoods and the city as a whole.

Historic Kenwood Neighborhood Association This month we’re taking a closer look at the Historic Kenwood Neighborhood Association (HKNA). First developed in 1912 on the site of a former avocado orchard, by 1950 Kenwood’s bungalows housed many of the city’s year-long residents. In the decades following, however, new subdivisions (complete with air-conditioning!) beckoned and Kenwood began to fall into decline. Then in 1990, a determined group of homeowners came together to form an association dedicated to restoration and revitalization. With a little help from the City of St. Petersburg, the neighborhood association implemented a plan that rejuvenated the community and helped guide Historic Kenwood’s remarkable renaissance.

This year, that organization - the HKNA - celebrates its 30th anniversary with a slate of events designed to highlight “How Art and Architecture Transformed a Neighborhood.”

Neighborhood of the Arts If you’ve ever strolled or driven through Historic Kenwood (HK), then you’ve experienced the charm of the iconic bungalows and midcentury houses along the oak-lined avenues. The HKNA’s work in getting Historic Kenwood added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, helps to ensure that charm remains. “Bungalowfest”, which the HKNA sponsors each November, also supports these efforts by offering tourgoers a chance to peek inside some of the renovated holidaydecorated bungalows. But the architecture is not the only thing that draws people to the neighborhood. The HKNA also supports the idea that art and artists are not just welcome in the community; they are essential contributors to the vibrant, creative, diverse neighborhood culture. This support led to HK’s designation as an “Artist Enclave” by the City of St. Pete, enabling artists to teach classes and sell artwork from their homes.

For the past five years, those artists have done their part to celebrate this

Sober St. Pete founders Rachel and Kim are providing a service to our community. The organization is only a couple months old, but they have already garnered over 400 organic Instagram followers and counting. People are clearly interested! “As soon as we announced it, there were so many responses of ‘I have been wanting this!,’ and just genuine excitement, which encourages us, knowing that we are on the right path,” beams Kim.

a labor of love. They seek to build a local, inclusive sober community.

“Our mission is to create a safe space for those who are sober or just sober-curious, and our passion is to reduce the stigma associated with not drinking,” says Kim. Sober St. Pete welcomes everyone - truly.

They are not affiliated with any recovery-based programs. Anyone can attend, whether or not they are in recovery or have chosen an alcoholfree lifestyle.

“There are so many benefits to and reasons for being sober, and society stigmatizes those who choose not to drink - we want to change that; this is the cornerstone of our community,” she explains.

“We created Sober St. Pete because we saw a lack of sober options for social interaction. As the city grows, more and more bars, breweries, and the like are opening every week it seems. We want to see the city grow for everyone - so holding space for those who do not drink is important to us. The role of alcohol has always been a pivotal one in society and we want to facilitate a change in the conversation, starting with eliminating the stigma of not drinking by coming together and creating connection.”

Alcohol-free Social Events The group, still in its infancy, is currently planning one organized meetup per month and will also promote other alcohol-free events around town. For example, in late February, they hosted a kayaking trip at Fort DeSoto, and in March it will be yoga on the beach (date TBD). They aim to enhance and build upon the larger alcohol-free community in St. Pete, including folks who are sober, sober-curious, in recovery, and those who just don’t enjoy drinking.

The Corridor: A Novel Approach to the Everglades

By Tina Stewart Brakebill In recent years, the Burmese python has gotten a lot of attention as the non-native, highly invasive, and rapidly proliferating species wreaking havoc on the Everglades ecosystem. But what if something else has been unleashed into the ‘Glades, something even scarier than a giant snake? That’s the terrifying question that local author Tom McGrath asks in his new novel, The Corridor. Without spoiling the reveal, I can say that although this is a work of fiction, the premise is all too real.

The Everglades Once covering nearly 11,000 square miles (over 7 million acres), the Everglades is often compared to a grassy slow-moving river. Stretching over much of southern Florida, untold numbers of different species of plant and animal life representing both temperate and tropical climates once flourished within its mangroves and marshes. By the early 1900’s, however, the drainage process that transformed wetland to developable land had begun to severely damage the Everglades ecosystem and the species it supported.

In 1947, with support of many early conservationists, scientists, and other advocates, Everglades National Park was established to conserve the natural landscape and prevent further degradation of its land, plants, and animals.

Everglades National Park: Enduring but Still Endangered Currently the Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve made up of coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes, and pine flatwoods. Its size is diminished but it’s still teeming with plant and animal life, including a number of legally protected species like the Cape Sable thoroughwort and the Florida bristle, as well as alligators, roseate spoonbills, endangered leatherback turtles, Florida panthers, and West Indian manatees. As the National Park Service notes, “The optimal growing conditions that are prevalent throughout south Florida foster a lush growth of plant life that sustains a diverse complex of flora.” Unfortunately, the landmark legislation establishing the park slowed but did not completely eliminate potential dangers.

Today, the Everglades continue to be threatened by numerous forces including the effects of climate change, agricultural runoff, and the introduction of non-native plants and animals.

The Corridor Introduces a New Danger!

As the National Park Service reports, non-native species typically lack natural predators so they can outcompete native species. They can multiply unchecked while using up valuable resources such as sunlight, water and nutrients. Native species suffer from this intense competition. Plus exotic introductions, like the Burmese Python, can pose grave danger to humans. But, those pythons aren’t the only invasive species wreaking havoc on the Florida Everglades as a result of Florida’s exotic pet trade. The Corridor’s author, Tom McGrath, builds on that reality to spin a compelling eco-suspense story. His goal was to “tell a good story” that had “meaning beyond simple adventure.” To do this, The Corridor introduces readers to a group of investigators, including a biologist, a park ranger, a museum reconstructor, and two journalists as they head deep into the Everglades looking to solve the mystery of a dangerous new addition to the Park, while politicians and opportunists try to turn the situation to their advantage. As a longtime (now-retired) professor of Biology and a principle investigator for the long-running Bahamian Reef Survey, McGrath has the scientific background to tackle this subject but he also has the storytelling ability to make it into a good yarn.

Downtown Developments

It seems like each time we take a stroll through downtown there are new restaurants and galleries opening and more apartment complexes and condo towers being built. We realize it’s difficult to keep track of everything. Luckily, we’ve done the research, so you don’t have to. Each month we will feature a few of the most exciting new downtown developments that are on the horizon for the Sunshine City.

Green Light Cinema, an indie movie theater, is coming soon to 221 2nd Avenue North in Downtown St. Pete. The 100-seat theater will screen the best indie films, foreign films, documentaries, and cult classics seven days a week. As for concessions, Green Light will offer the standard fare — popcorn, candy, soda, beer, and wine. The cost of admission will be $10 for adults and $8 for students, seniors, and military. When asked if he was worried about the growing dominance of Netflix and other streaming services, owner Mike Hazlett replied, “People like the immersive movie experience. Netflix will never be able to offer that.” The theater is expected to open in mid-April.

Central Park Food Hall is coming soon to 551 Central Avenue in Downtown St Pete (formerly the Dome Grill). The three-story, 24,000 square foot project will have dining concepts on each floor with a focus on healthy eating and European cuisine. The first floor will contain the flagship food hall and a world class bar. The second floor will feature the Speaks Clam Bar, an eatery with fun, Prohibition-style decor offering classic Italian entrees with a New York City vibe, seafood dishes and cocktails. The third floor will serve as an event space with a rooftop park and another opportunity for afternoon and evening dining. The project is expected to open summer 2021.

AD Lofts, a mixed-use development, is coming soon to 2250 Central Avenue. The project consists of seven three-story townhomes above 5,000 square feet of retail. Each spacious three-bedroom 3.5-bath home will include a private elevator, a two-car garage, 10-foot ceilings, and a 22-foot high sky-lit gallery space with oversized windows. AD Lofts is expected to break ground in early 2020 with a completion date of early 2021.

Station House is coming soon to the Mall at Sundial at 153 2nd Avenue North. The popular coworking space, which expanded to St. Pete’s 600 block in 2016 and Tampa’s Hyde Park Village in 2019, will bring to Sundial a dynamic mix of co-work and event space in a fun, vibrant lifestyle environment. The project will be completed in 2020. All

of the Sundial tenants will remain open throughout construction. With the expansion of an Armature Works food hall too, Sundial is slated to have a big 2020.

A group of locals, led by Fred Hemmer, are proposing an 18-story condominium tower for the northeast corner of 3rd Avenue North and 8th Street North. The project, named Reflection, will be located a block from Mirror Lake and will offer 77 units in a modern building with a glass facade. The first six stories of Reflection will consist of parking along with approximately 5,300 square feet of ground floor retail space.

The condominium’s residences will be located on floors seven through seventeen. Pricing is set to begin in the $600,000s, which is about 30% lower than Beach Drive prices. If all goes according to plan, construction should begin in the fourth quarter of 2020 or first quarter of 2021.
