We are a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the public’s understanding and appreciation of the Smokies. Each year the Association donates over $1 million to Great Smoky Mountains National Park to support educational, historical, and scientific programs.

All proceeds generated through the sale of merchandise go to the park to support projects and services.

Great Smoky Mountains Association uses profits from sales and membership dues to fund the following projects in the Smokies: • Support outdoor education for youth through the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont.

• Sponsorship for special events and demonstrations such as the Mountain Life Festival.

• Save hemlock trees from the non-native hemlock woolly adelgid.

• Staffing for 12 park visitor contact stations.

• Provide staff and equipment for the park archives, library, and artifact collection.

• Support for Parks as Classrooms programs for area youth.

• Production and distribution of free educational and informational publications like the Smokies Guide park newspaper, campground maps, and fishing regulations.

• Funding for seasonal rangers that manage park wildlife such as elk and bear.

• Support for the Junior Ranger and Hike the Smokies programs.

HISTORY A Home in Walker Valley: The Story of Tremont Walker Valley (now referred to as the “Tremont” area of the park) has one of the most fascinating histories of any Smoky Mountain locale. Carroll Best and the White Oak String Band Features more than 30 tracks, including such old-time favorites as “Tennessee Wagoner,” “Arkansas Traveler,” “Old Joe Clark,” “Soldier’s Joy,” as well as such modern tunes as “Banjo Boogie” and “Smoky Mountain Melody.” It was the summer of 1956 when linguist and song catcher Joseph Hall made a second trip to the Smoky Mountains after having visited some 20 years earlier.
