Spanning 27,000 acres, Zaleski State Forest defines deep wilderness. Its backpacking trail rambles 28.8 miles, and riders can’t say “neigh” to extensive bridle paths. Zaleski is also home to purportedly haunted Moonville Tunnel — a magnet for ghost hunters and cyclists pedaling the Moonville Rail Trail. Lake Hope State Park embraces both laid-back and intense recreation. The lake is perfect for peaceful paddling, while mountain bike trails bring downhill thrills. History buffs gravitate to Hope Furnace, one of the area’s many 19th-century iron furnaces. To fuel iron furnaces, Vinton Furnace State Forest’s 24 Belgian ovens processed coal into coke. Its diverse habitats are ideal for wildlife and bird watching, and its geological features, like Arch Rock, are worth seeing. Anglers adore Lake Rupert’s bass, crappie, and catfish. With campgrounds, picnic shelters, and a dog park, Lake Alma State Park is a family-friendly getaway. Short trails accommodate easy hiking, where deer and waterfowl sightings abound. Backcountry beckons at Tar Hollow State Forest. The looping Logan Backpack Trail allows daylong or multi-day treks, while equestrians appreciate 22 miles of bridle trails. In spring, foragers flock here seeking mushrooms. For a different way to experience the forest, take a scenic drive on the roads winding among the ridges. Motorized thrills entice All-Purpose Vehicle riders to Richland Furnace State Forest, with extensive trails open to dirt bikes and ATVs. In addition to state forests, parcels of Wayne National Forest dapple Vinton County, ready for you to explore. Raccoon Creek State Scenic River twists through Vinton’s wild lands. The restored stream, once tainted with mine runoff, now shelters 90 species of fish and is a prime destination for kayaking, swimming, and fishing. After a day on the water, stay overnight at Altenbrauch Farm. It offers 62 acres of free-range camping — simply pick a spot that speaks to you and set up your tent. To get the most from your escape to Vinton’s wilds, take advantage of activities at local nature centers. Tar Hollow offers animal shows for kids, while Lake Hope’s programming ranges from stargazing to forest bathing and foraging.

5. OTHER BIRDS: Vinton County’s forests are a crucial stopover for migrating songbirds, but many species linger year-round. Wetland species like herons, grebes, osprey, and bald eagles frequent Wellston Wildlife Area, while Lake Alma hosts woodpeckers, wood thrush, and barred owls. Vinton Furnace is a renowned hot spot for cerulean warblers, while Lake Hope attracts phoebes, swallows, and vireos.

3. WHITE-TAILED DEER: Summer and fall means deer spotting in Vinton County. Superior Wildlife Area and Zaleski and Vinton Furnace state forests are reliable sites to see this species. Road crossings are common year-round, so take caution in deer-crossing areas.

6. BOBCATS: While increasingly prevalent, these felines are still difficult to find. Vinton Furnace State Park boasts the state’s highest population. Seek bobcats in summer when females make forays to feed their kittens.

At Lake Alma State Park, the lake’s peninsula or the island offers the best cosmos views. Stargazers delight in the celestial scenery at Lake Rupert in the Wellston Wildlife Area. Along St. Rte. 93, outside Mount Pleasant, elevated pull-offs offer excellent night-sky viewing. In Zaleski State Forest, spot the Milky Way band and more from the Iron Furnace, backpacking trails, and parking lots, or the Hope School House. Lake Hope State Park is working towards Dark Sky Park designation. Stargaze from the shelter house and the dam’s open area off St. Rte. 278. Check the park’s calendar for naturalist-led night hikes throughout the year. Kayaking on the lake with Touch the Earth Adventures is paired with beaver spotting under the stars. Stargazers love to gather at John Glenn Astronomy Park in nearby Hocking County. This designated Dark Sky Site is open daily 24/7, however, programs only happen Friday and Saturday nights from March to November. Programs are weather permitting and free. Bring a telescope or binoculars for the best viewing. Registration is required at jgap.info to guarantee a parking spot.

to ravenwood Ravenwood Castle feels worlds away from everyday life. Owners Jim and Pam Reed have spent the past 14 years preserving the property’s story while creating memorable experiences. The medieval-themed country inn invites guests to trade notifications for nature, board games, and conversation.
VC FARM & FLORAL
rooted in
vinton county Emily Collins and her husband, Kelton, returned to their hometown to continue the family farm and bring a longtime dream to life. Today, VC Farm & Floral is equal parts flower shop, farm market, and gathering place.
Ravenwood Castle was already a special place for you before you owned it. How did that happen? It was one of our first getaways as a married couple. We loved how peaceful it was and how easy it was to unplug. Years later, while helping our daughter with a school project, I searched for the castle online and discovered it was for sale. Suddenly, this place we loved became our next adventure. What event should visitors plan a trip around? Our immersive murder mystery weekends. The story begins before guests even arrive and unfolds throughout the entire weekend. We also host themed tasting weekends, so there’s always something new to try.
Ravenwood is known for giving back, too. Tell us about that. Our Hoop & Stick Con gaming convention brings together guests from all over the country to raise money for children’s hospitals. Last year, we raised almost $54,000. It’s one of the weekends we’re most proud of, as it reflects the incredible community that’s grown around Ravenwood. How do you hope people experience Ravenwood — and Vinton County? You can spend your stay at the castle, hiking our trails, dining in the pub, and enjoying the property. Or you can head out and explore the attractions nearby before coming back to relax. We love that guests can build the getaway that’s perfect for them.
RAVENWOOD CASTLE
What inspired you to open VC Farm & Floral? I started growing cut flowers for our flower farm, Twin Sprouts, named after our twin daughters. The community embraced it, and when this historic flower shop became available, we knew it was the perfect opportunity to create something bigger.
What should visitors look for during flower season? Spring is all about our tulips. In the summer, it’s sunflowers. We grow thousands of them in all kinds of colors. What’s one thing every visitor should take home? Something made here in Vinton County. Whether it’s a bouquet, a candle, handmade woodwork, or something from one of our local artisans, you’ll leave with a piece of the community.

What makes the shop unique? You’ll find fresh flowers we grow ourselves, farm-raised beef, pork, and eggs, along with homemade bread, jams and jellies, candles, soaps, plants, and gifts from local makers. This is the place to experience Vinton County in one stop.
HAMMOND HARDWARE & LUMBER
hardware with heart When Steve Hammond isn’t helping lead the Village of McArthur as mayor, you’ll likely find him behind the counter at Hammond Hardware & Lumber in nearby Hamden. Housed in a historic 1902 building with original tin ceilings, hardwood floors, and vintage fixtures, the store is equal parts hardware store, gift shop, and community gathering place.
What makes Hammond Hardware different from a big-box store? We try to stock the things people suddenly need. But it’s also about the experience. We have an old-fashioned candy counter, locally roasted Silver Bridge Coffee, Mosser Glass, Case knives, handmade gifts, and even a 1964 Coca Cola cooler that’s still keeping glass bottles cold. What’s your favorite part of owning the store? It’s the people we meet. We’ve had visitors from Alaska, California, and even Canada stop in because they’re exploring Vinton County or Hocking Hills. It’s fun watching people discover a hardware store that’s still the way they remember them.
Realty
What’s next for Hammond Hardware? We’re restoring a vintage soda fountain that will soon become part of the store. We want to keep adding experiences that make people want to stop in, look around, and enjoy a little piece of the past. What do you hope visitors take away from a stop at Hammond Hardware? I hope they arrive feeling a warm welcome and leave having discovered something authentic.
An Appalachian belief suggests that if you are fortunate, you will have the opportunity in your life to be owned by a good piece of land.
If you’re fortunate, life will one day lead you to a place that feels less like a destination and more like home. For some, it’s a quiet cabin tucked into the hills. For others, it’s a family farm, a weekend retreat, or the home they’ve always imagined. Whatever your dream looks like, we’re here to help you find it. As lifelong Vinton County natives, we’ve had the privilege of living, working, and currently raising our two children in one of Ohio’s most beautiful regions. Since 2007, we’ve helped buyers and sellers navigate the local real estate market with confidence, honesty, and a deep appreciation for the communities we call home. We know these back roads, forests, small towns, and hidden gems because they’ve always been part of our story. Whether you’re searching for your forever home, a recreational property, investment land, or a peaceful getaway, we’d love the opportunity to help you write your next chapter. Come discover why so many people visit this region—and why so many decide to stay.

Pull off the highway and step into the trees. Start at Hope Schoolhouse located within Zaleski State Forest near Lake Hope State Park, a one-room schoolhouse turned into an interpretive welcome center and trailhead. Nearby, the crumbling ruins of Hope Furnace rise from the forest floor. They serve as a ghostly reminder of the iron boom that defined this Appalachian corner of Ohio in the mid-1800s. In Vinton Furnace State Forest, dark glassy slag marks the trail to the Belgian Coke Oven Ruins, leading to thick-walled beehive ovens that once baked raw coal into fuel for the Industrial Revolution. The nearby historic Eakin Mill Covered Bridge carried commerce like iron, timber, and other goods. Before automobiles, people traveled on foot along the railbed between longforgotten settlements, sometimes with just three feet of space as a train came barreling through. No wonder Moonville Tunnel earned its haunted reputation. Legend says railroad workers’ ghosts still walk the tracks. Every October, Midnight at Moonville draws visitors after dark. From April to November, Uncle Buck’s Riding Stable offers horseback rides through the tunnel itself. The John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail traces the route Confederate General John Hunt Morgan’s cavalry cut through the county in 1863, kidnapping the Vinton Furnace manager, commandeering a Creola farmhouse, and looting Wilkesville stores.

In McArthur, a courthouse mural honors Maude Collins, Ohio’s first female sheriff. Maude’s husband, Fletcher, died in the line of duty. Appointed in 1925 after his death, she busted moonshine stills, solved homicides, and won re-election against male opponents. “She was a law enforcement pioneer and an inspiration,” says Deanna Tribe of the Vinton County Historical and Genealogical Society, where family histories and local artifacts await on South Sugar Street. “We are a small piece of the picture; not just in Ohio’s history, but in America’s, too.”
