A WALKING TOUR OF HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE As you stroll along Historic Mahoning Avenue, imagine yourself back in the Victorian era when this area was quite fashionable and filled with a mixture of shops and homes. This is where the local affluent — the “Who’s Who”of American industry, commerce, and politics — built and lived in stately homes and mansions that lined the streets during the mid-to-late 1800s.

Mosquito Creek Lake: While famous for watersports, the calm northern section (just north of the St. Rte. 88 causeway) is a well-kept secret for anglers. Battle trophysized largemouth bass, crappie, and walleye. The Grand River: Head into the large wilderness area surrounding this river for a different kind of angling adventure. The quiet, accessible ponds here provide fantastic local spots for catching panfish. Mahoning River: Public access makes launching your kayak or boat on this scenic, slower-moving waterway a breeze. It’s prime territory for landing solid catches of smallmouth bass, muskellunge, and substantial catfish.

Trumbull County’s MetroParks are the perfect setting for a dose of nature and local activity. Venture to Eastlake MetroPark in Cortland, a yearround family favorite with ample space for picnics and a popular sledding hill. For true peace, head to Thomas A. Swift MetroPark in Braceville, a beautiful 12-acre open green space along the Mahoning River. Take a stroll on the half-mile path, watch for birds and other wildlife, or simply enjoy a quiet moment of reflection in nature.

Mosquito Creek Lake is a haven for rare birds. The prothonotary warbler, for example, migrates through the area. Also look for bald and golden eagles, osprey, great egrets, and even white pelicans. In winter, you might spot the endangered northern harrier.

Shenango Wildlife Area, a migration hot spot, hosts woodcocks in the fall and migrating waterfowl. The rare trumpeter swan has also been sighted. Spring is ideal for anglers, as largemouth bass, sunfish, and carp gather there.

Warren native Allie Vugrinicic shares her favorite ways to spend a day in Trumbull County’s great outdoors.

Mosquito Lake has always been a favorite spot of mine. It’s full of opportunities to connect with nature and have some good old-fashioned fun. Here are some of my favorite things to do during a day at Mosquito Lake.

Family Fun

The lake is a great place to boat, with boat launches located off Durst Drive in the park and near the intersection of St. Rtes. 88 and 46. Don’t own a boat? No worries — you can rent one at Mosquito Lake Marina & Boat Rental. The State Park has a family-friendly beach as well as a dog park with a swimming area, so man’s best friend can take a dip, too.

Mosquito Lake State Park, Bazetta

Not far from the campground is a Nature Play Area with a canvas teepee, rope course, and wooden cabin. This rustic playground is a great place for kids to safely explore and get in touch with nature. Across the street from the Nature Play Area is an archery range, which is free and open to players with their own equipment. The park also sometimes offers children’s archery lessons.
