At first glance, we are Ohio's fourth-largest city, on the edge of Lake Erie, built on a foundation of thriving glass and automotive industries. But look closer — Toledo is so much more. We're a city on the rise, where revitalization isn't just a buzzword, it's a movement backed by our resilience, Midwestern hospitality and determination to keep going. Our cultural institutions are world-renowned, our park system is award-winning and our culinary scene is bold and diverse. And here, art isn't confined to galleries — it spills into the streets, creating the backdrop of a city that dares to dream bigger, including the largest mural in the nation. This is Toledo. Experience it for yourself.

If you haven’t been to Toledo recently, you really haven’t been at all.
By Kristina Smith
The revitalization of downtown has been under way for years, ripe with re-imagined spaces and more on the way. With so much happening, it’s no wonder that people are moving to new and renovated downtown spaces. One such space, Fort Industry Square, faces the river and offers lofts above retail space.
“Toledo seems to be a very popular destination, especially for young professionals,” says Steve Miller, general manager for Glass City Center and the Huntington Center. “Businesses are taking note and coming into downtown.” The end result is a vibrant, resilient city with a growing economy and something for all.
Experience a baseball game at Fifth Third Field, home of the Toledo Mud Hens. Themed nights range from Star Wars to Hens and Hounds when you can bring your leashed pup. Watch the Toledo Walleye take the ice at the Huntington Center, also hosting themed nights and giveaways. Before the games, enjoy fare from one of the many downtown eateries, raise a pint at downtown breweries or enjoy cocktails created with in-house distilled liquor at Toledo Spirits Co. Enjoy a show any time of year thanks to concert series and festivals at great outdoor venues. Head inside the historic Valentine Theatre for a Broadway production or catch gifted local performers at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre. The Toledo Symphony, Toledo Ballet, Toledo Opera and Ballet Theatre of Toledo all showcase their talent at a variety of venues.
A FOUR CORNER SOLUTION
Test your brain power at Imagination Station, full of interactive exhibits allowing kids and adults to simulate flying an airplane and defy gravity on the high wire cycle.
The free-to-all Toledo Museum of Art has a world-class collection, including its radiant Glass Pavilion that celebrates the city’s role in the studio glass art movement. The museum is planning improvements to tell a broader story. Dive in and learn how navigating the lakes has changed through the centuries at the National Museum of the Great Lakes — undergoing a major expansion with special rotating exhibits and new conversations.
Take a stroll on the Glass City Riverwalk, an expanding corridor with breathtaking views of the Maumee River
that's spurring new riverfront business and development. Currently, 80 of the planned 300 acres of greenspace are open for exploration, including Glass City Metropark on the east bank — one of 19 Metroparks in the region. On the west bank, the Riverwalk passes through Ostrich Towne in Toledo’s oldest neighborhood, the Vistula Historic District. Here you’ll find a vibrant mix of colorful murals and brick facades housing restaurants, shops, and office and event space. One space bringing people together is Tolhouse, a social club for the city’s entrepreneurial class and young professionals. Toledo Pickle Co. is a newcomer on Water Street and offers indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, climbing walls, shuffleboard and cornhole.
After a decade of sitting empty and decaying, two of the historic skyscrapers at the intersection of N. Huron Street and Madison Avenue in downtown Toledo — the Spitzer and Nicholas buildings dating to the late 1800s — will be restored and redeveloped into 367 apartments above commercial space. “It is probably the most transformative project we have going on in downtown Toledo,” says Brandon Sehlhorst, City of Toledo's director of economic development. The $200 million Four Corners Project, named for the four historic buildings at the intersection, is slated to begin in late 2025 and open in early 2027.

Darryl Brown, MIDWEST KIDS
FASHION BRAND MIDWEST KIDS has found national acclaim while staying true to its Toledo roots. Darryl Brown started Midwest Kids in 2018 to give people from the Midwest something to call their own. With fashion usually dominated by the coasts, Brown’s brand connects people through community, sport, entertainment and lifestyle, and people have taken notice. His designs, such as T-shirts and hats emblazoned with “Midwest Kids,” have been worn by LeBron James, Kanye West and more, and have been featured in stores such as Pacsun and Walmart.
“A Midwest kid is a bluecollar, hard-working person
making it happen every day,” Brown says.
“It’s a blessing having a brand that’s doing well and from the Midwest. The part I love the most is that the brand is bigger than me.” When it comes to his favorite local spots, “I love the world that the Lucases have created at TolHouse, a members-only social club for creatives and more. It’s a safe place with the best people and vibes,” says Brown.
“Woodville Surplus is great because I love military-style and vintage clothes. My favorite place to eat is Jefferson Express downtown. You’ll see everyone from all parts of life while there. And they have my picture hanging up!”

Dean Davis
AT THE HEIGHT OF THE PANDEMIC in 2020, Dean Davis was working for a railroad company, and after many years on the job, no longer felt fulfilled. He felt his mental health declining and knew he wanted to get back to his roots as an artist. It was then that he landed the opportunity to help create what would become the Glass City River Wall, the largest mural in the country.
“It was a serendipitous moment,” he says. “I found myself in a groove.” Since then, he’s been creating murals in cities across the country, including many that offer QR codes within the art to help those struggling with mental health. Locally, Davis also painted the Best Day Ever mural in downtown Toledo and has other projects in the works like a mural at the city’s newest riverfront recreation hub, Toledo Pickle Co.
“The thing about the mural that makes it truly so powerful is the beacon and soul that it can give to a community,” Davis says. “It’s this cultural rejuvenation. This ability to give people a voice when it’s been muted. Murals … help us make the places that people can be proud of.”

For that classic camping experience, gather around a fire at a primitive campground like those at Farnsworth Metropark or Cannonball Prairie Campground. The two cabin platforms at Bend View Metropark offer an elevated view of the Maumee River. And glampers will love the picture-perfect Cannaley Treehouse Village, where you can choose from heated/cooled cabins, tents or tree-perched lofts. Seasoned campers love Maumee Bay State Park for its perks like golf and expansive Lake Erie beach. Twin Acres offers cozy, family-focused camping, while Covered Wagon Camp Resort’s pool provides water fun for all ages.
Admire Seasonal Birds | Birding is a beloved pastime around Toledo; the region is a major route for migrating birds, making for astounding observing in the springtime. The Biggest Week in American Birding in May celebrates the warbler, offering everything from identification workshops to birding by canoe and a marketplace. Outside of the event, start exploring the area’s rich birding on the Lake Erie Birding Trail. Recently re-launched by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Lucas County is home to 15 of the trail’s 90 stops. Start visiting them one-by-one, or dedicate a day to completing the Western Lake Erie Marshes Loop to spot species like warblers, thrushes, vireos and shorebirds.
Cast a Line | Known as the Walleye Capital of the World, you’ll find the country’s best walleye fishing when you cast a line in Toledo waters. Spring is especially spectacular — the annual walleye run starts when weather begins to warm and walleye spawn, making for action-packed fishing. Visit Side Cut Metropark, Farnsworth Metropark and Providence Metropark to catch this favorite fish, along with other local species like yellow perch and white bass. For a top-of-the-line fishing charter, book The Glass City Pearl through J&M Cruise Lines; an eight-hour Lake Erie tour includes snacks, beverages and a cleaning service for anything you catch.
Cannaley Treehouse Village
Pedal the Trails | Toledo and northwest Ohio are home to many well-groomed bicycle trails, one favorite being the Wabash Cannonball Trail, which spans some 66 miles of former rail lines across four counties. Its 12-foot-wide route makes for wheelchair accessibility (though there are slopes) and, in winter, is open to crosscountry skiers as well. The centrally located University/Parks Trail, another repurposed rail corridor, provides 7 paved miles of trail for bikers, skaters and pedestrians alike.
Learn to Conserve | At Perrysburg's 577 Foundation, education and creative learning coexist in a park setting, where visitors can gain a deeper understanding of plants and nature through classes and conservation workshops. The Black Swamp Bird Observatory works to #GetOutsideYourself at the Toledo area’s 19 Metroparks. Admission is free to all. metroparkstoledo.com

s a port city situated on the Maumee River at Lake Erie’s western shore, Toledo offers a plethora of ways for visitors to explore the area via boat.
J&M Cruise Lines has shuttled visitors around Lake Erie for years. Their 100-passenger boat, The Sandpiper, is Toledo’s longest-running cruise vessel; hop aboard for a public cruise along the Maumee River, or book a private cruise for your next event. Their newest ship, The Glass City Pearl, reaches speeds around 15 knots, giving passengers the ability to venture to Put-In-Bay and the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse. J&M also operates Water Street Taxi + Tours, a seasonal water taxi service shuttling passengers across the river from downtown to The Docks at International Park. Floating in for an event or catching a bite to eat downtown? Slips are available at the Downtown Docks (Promenade Park), The Docks (restaurants) and Glass City Marina (east side) through J&M Cruise Lines. The Jet Express is another excellent option for a scenic boat ride; the ferry offers routes to Cedar Point, Put-In-Bay and Kelleys Island. For visiting boaters, transient docking is available at Anchor Pointe Marina, where you can grab a bite at The Bilge bar and restaurant with views of Lake Erie. Meinke Marina, one of the largest in Lake Erie and the Great Lakes with its 1,800 boat docks, can accommodate a visiting boat at their east or west locations, approximately 4 miles apart.

n Toledo, we know there shouldn’t be barriers to fun or access for anyone.
Our community is working hard to make that a reality for all who visit. At the heart of this movement is The Ability Center's 2020-launched Think Differently initiative, which invites the public to take action in its mission to become the most disability-friendly community in the U.S. Many local institutions are now Certified Autism Centers™, including the National Museum of the Great Lakes, Valentine Theatre, Glass City Center, Huntington
Center, Franklin Park Mall and Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport. Other organizations are leading the way with autism-friendly offerings and beyond.
The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium offers inclusive amenities for all guests, such as sensory bags, wheelchair-accessible picnic tables, sighted guide tours and ADA-compliant rides, ensuring everyone can fully enjoy its natural wonders. Imagination Station is similarly committed to making science accessible to everyone through accommodations like sensory-friendly movie screenings, noisereducing headphones and a calming room.

Kengo Sushi & Yakitori
CHEF KENGO KATO brings Japanese sushi and street foods like yakitori to Toledo. Growing up in New York, traditional Japanese food was part of his childhood. “I found a little restaurant where I could make traditional Japanese cuisine like I was trained to do,” he shares. People flock here for sushi and yakitori (skewered meat or seafood). Some reserve a special Omakase experience (translation: leave it up to the chef) — a two-hour meal with 14–16 courses prepared at Chef Kengo’s table.

Chef Elias Hajjar

CHEF ELIAS HAJJAR invites guests into Mediterranean flavors at his three Poco Piatti locations in Perrysburg, Sylvania and Toledo. “The two Poco Piatti locations have identical menus, but at The Garden [at Glass City Metropark], we make our menus ready for quick service,” he says. All locations celebrate Mediterranean traditions — fresh veggies and herbs, along with butchering and marinating their meats.
The Vibe: Warm, Mediterranean colors and landscape murals by a local artist. The Garden: casual, counter-service overlooking Toledo’s skyline and The Ribbon.
CHEF'S FAVORITES
Menu Item: Chef Elias suggests the violet wrap with chicken tips and Lebanese cabbage salad at The Garden or beef kabobs at Poco Piatti. Hobbies: “It might sound boring, but cooking is a passion rather than a chore, at work and at home.”

She studied at the Culinary Institute of America and worked as a chef in Chicago and Dallas before returning to Toledo in 2005.
The Vibe: Casual, yet elegant. Located in downtown Toledo inside the charming and historic Secor Building.
CHEF'S FAVORITES
Menu Item: “That’s like asking someone to choose their favorite child.” Hobbies: Cooking and entertaining for family and friends, or dining out at Kengo and Souk. She loves the Toledo Museum of Art and hiking Ottawa Park’s trails with her 100-pound doodle mutt.
Chef Jeff Dinnebeil and Megan Lingsweiler
The Standard
CHEF JEFF DINNEBEIL prepares elevated comfort food from his open kitchen, affording interaction with diners. His wife Megan handles marketing and social media. Together, the couple’s extensive northwest Ohio restaurant experience has come to fruition with their 100%-owned American bistro. "The Standard is a reflection of who we are,” says Jeff. “It's what's special to us, which is making an emotional connection with our guests and showing genuine hospitality.”

oledo has a vibrant brewing scene with a rich history. Maumee Bay Brewing Company opened its doors at the historic Oliver House in 1995 as Toledo’s original craft brewery. Today, you'll find a variety of beer styles at the 14-tap brewpub under the High Level Bridge. Since opening in May of 2018 at its original downtown Sylvania location, Inside the Five Brewing has expanded with a brewpub in Perrysburg and its new production facility and taproom — The Fieldhouse — near the University of Toledo’s campus. Quenched & Tempered Brewing Co. began in the spring of 2019 by producing kegs and cans from their Grand Rapids home. In August of 2022, the brewery got its public face with its Uptown brewpub taproom. What began in a former Waterville carwash in June of 2021 for Buffalo Rock Brewing Co., has now expanded to Oregon, as the brewery has brought the former firehouse back to life with a vibrant taproom and live music event space.

Behind the Beans | ANGIE CUCUNATO, FLYING RHINO COFFEE
ON THE QUEST TO SERVE THE MASSES, it’s not uncommon for coffee shops to prioritize the final drink over anything else. But at Flying Rhino Coffee in downtown’s Warehouse District, the coffee beans are the true stars.
“Coffee has always been a passion of mine,” says owner Angie Cucunato, who first joined Flying Rhino as a roaster apprentice in 2012. The small business celebrates quality coffee from bean to brew with its freshly roasted beans and ground coffee by the pound, delicious house drinks made with scratch syrups, plus brewing equipment and accessories.
“We’re lucky to have such deep roots
in our downtown area,” says Cucunato. Flying Rhino often partners with other local businesses to host events that give artists, growers and makers a platform.
“I love shopping local,” says Cucunato. Handmade Toledo, Original Sub Shop, Registry Bistro, Jera's Heavenly Sweets, Dollop Shop and The Attic on Adams are just a few favorites, “and they're all woman-owned,” she adds.

OF TRANSFORMATION City City
Envisioning the future of the Toledo region, a collaboration with Midstory.
By Logan Sander, editorial director at Midstory
rom New York to L.A., Boston to Seattle, cities across the country take pride in identities deeply ingrained in the American consciousness. They’ve become synonymous with their icons — skyscrapers or stars, tea (parties) or coffee. But what makes Toledo, well … Toledo?
Toledo is a city that doesn’t pride itself on what it’s always been, but rather what it’s becoming. It has a notable history, but that history is one of transformation — of dynamism in the face of obstacles, of versatility in the face of a changing world.
ABOUT MIDSTORY
In 1833, Toledo began as a humble but tenacious port city on the Great Lakes and, before the turn of the century, began its spectacular rise as a rail hub and industrial center. It’s been known for everything from glass to spark plugs to furniture to scales. In the 20th century, it saw both a postwar manufacturing boom and a cultural blossoming, including a thriving jazz scene influenced by the Great Migration and the establishment of a world-renowned art museum born of a vibrant tradition of philanthropy. Today, Toledo’s transformation continues in the 21st century as we challenge what it means to be a “postindustrial” city — strengthening our blue-collar roots and cultivating a
new generation of thinkers, creators and visionaries. Toledo is a city of transformation. And with that identity comes the privilege and responsibility to shape where it’s going next. We hope you’ll join us.

Midstory is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit thinkhub dedicated to progressing the Midwest narrative through storytelling, research and programming. We chose Toledo as our national headquarters not only because it’s home, but because it’s ripe with opportunity.
In 2018, four young people with Midwest roots returned to Toledo from Ivy League educations and East Coast dreams in the hope of forging pathways for many more bright minds and hearts to find home in Toledo. Thus, Midstory was born, and has since told thousands of stories, won state and national awards for research and media and brought over 100 young people from all across the nation to Toledo.

Angela and Will Lucas | TOLHOUSE
ANGELA AND WILL LUCAS, FOUNDERS OF TOLHOUSE, built the social club in 2021 to fill a gap they saw in the community — a space for a diversity of creatives and entrepreneurs. TolHouse includes a public coffee house (Earth) and jazz club (Lucille’s), along with members-only spaces for remote co-working, event spaces, a private bar and cigar lounge.
“You build what you want to see. And we wanted this in our city,” says Angela. Will, who thrives on his entrepreneurial mind, says Toledo is a blank slate for innovation: “We are a microcosm of the larger population. If it can work here, this proves … that it can work in other places.” They’re both passionate about Toledo’s potential, believing firmly that “if you start something here, people will rally behind you.”
When not at TolHouse, the couple enjoys exploring Toledo gems. “The Metroparks are amazing,” Angela says, “and our city takes such good care of them.” Will shares that their favorite dining spots include Souk and The Standard.
Glass City CENTER SHINES Glass City
By Kristina Smith
After a $70 million renovation, the Glass City Center can now accommodate larger conferences, weddings and more, all in the heart of downtown Toledo and steps away from the Huntington Center and Fifth Third Field. “With adjacent Hiltons at Toledo Downtown, a parking garage and on-site catering through AVI, the Glass City Center offers the amenities needed to attract more people and events to Toledo,”
AT YOUR SERVICE
says General Manager Steve Miller. The upgrades include a ballroom that can hold 1,000 people, which was a feature considered essential to bringing in notable events, such as statewide conventions and competitions.
“It’s a been a huge game changer for us,” Miller says. “It’s really made a difference in the types of business we’ve been able to achieve and attract to Toledo.”
In addition to modern and aesthetically pleasing architectural spaces, the project includes $1.5 million in public
art installations. This extended Toledo’s commitment to public art and offers another space for people to connect with the local creative scene. The center also partnered with the Toledo Museum of Art to reproduce large-scale murals of some of its popular paintings on the walls.
“There’s really a lot of great, positive momentum going on,” Miller says. “Not only with people coming to town, but with businesses opening up downtown because of the increased traffic.”
Whether a road tripper, meeting planner or event attendee, you won’t want for a thing at Toledo’s full-service hotels. The Hiltons at Toledo Downtown and the Renaissance Toledo Downtown Hotel overlooking the Maumee River are a short walk from downtown attractions, restaurants and the convention center. Each offers on-site restaurants, room service, valet parking, meeting rooms and fitness centers. The newly opened Delta Hotels by Marriott Toledo near the University of Toledo Medical Center offers a restaurant, meeting rooms, indoor pool, room service, fitness center and free on-site parking. Just 20 minutes from downtown Toledo, Maumee Bay Lodge & Conference Center overlooks Lake Erie and is a hub of activity — from golf and hiking to indoor and outdoor pools and a splash pad.
