you! Your feedback is important to us as we plan upcoming issues of Sip magazine. In an effort to make sure that you have all you need for your next Ohio winery visit, Great Lakes Publishing, the publisher of Sip magazine, is conducting a short online survey about the magazine’s content and usability. Our goal is to provide readers with the information and tools needed to plan and experience all that Ohio wines and wineries have to offer, including the people and places to visit along the way and ideas on where to dine and stay. The survey will only take six minutes to complete and will automatically enter you in the Sip Reader Survey Sweepstakes*, where three lucky respondents will win Ohio wine and food gift baskets, valued at more than $150 each.** To participate, visit glpublishing.com/ohwine. We look forward to hearing from you!

*No purchase necessary to win. **The sweepstakes, offered by the Ohio Grape Industries Committee, begins June 1, 2022, and ends on May 31, 2023. Winners will be randomly drawn at the conclusion of the survey period. For official rules and regulations, visit glpublishing.com/ohwine.

region in the state. The unique microclimate created by the area’s topography and the protective influence of Lake Erie allows winemakers to grow some of the best grapes in the country, including European vinifera varieties that are difficult to grow elsewhere in Ohio. There’s also much to do in this region in addition to winery hopping. Headlands Beach State Park in Lake County has a mile-long sandy beach, and neighboring Ashtabula County is Ohio’s covered bridge capital — there are 19 of them, including the longest and shortest in the country. The frozen-in-time town of Genevaon-the-Lake has been a family destination for decades with its famous “Strip” featuring arcades and vintage eateries like Eddie’s Grill, where tunes from yesteryear perpetually play on the jukebox. Stay at The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake and take the shuttle to area wineries. Come back to take in views of Lake Erie and ride the zip line at Lake Erie Canopy Tours. Among the places to try is M Cellars, a boutique winery specializing in fine, cool-climate wines. Sample unique varieties, like Rkatsiteli, a 3,000-year-old grape from the Republic of Georgia that produces a distinctive white wine. Grand River Cellars produces Riesling, Chardonnay and Merlot, as well as specialty wines like a maple ice wine. Their lofty tasting room has a fireplace and hand-painted murals and is a good place to catch dinner — offerings include bourbon salmon.

Dine on pasta, paninis and pizza with a vista of 65 acres of manicured vineyards at Ferrante Winery & Ristorante. Its Vidal Blanc Ice Wine took medals at the prestigious San Francisco Wine Competition. Stonegait Winery looks like a big red barn, and that’s exactly what it once was. The beautifully restored structure sits on what was once a working horse farm, and the winery honors its heritage with horses on their wines’ labels. Try its Tempranillo. Customer favorites at nearby Laurello Vineyards include the Cosmo, a “Super Tuscan” red blend — there’s also a version of it aged in bourbon barrels. With its log cabin appearance and high-ceilinged tasting room dominated with a four-sided stone fireplace, Laurentia Vineyard and Winery has the look of a rustic lodge. Take home the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Stoltz Block® — it was featured in Wine Enthusiast magazine.

winemaking skills to the New World found the limestone-rich soil and mild climate of the Lake Erie islands and nearby shoreline ideal for the production of grapes. Nowadays, the winemaking business is enjoying a renewed resurgence in this popular destination. For decades, fun-seekers have been drawn to the quaint town of Sandusky because of Cedar Point’s array of world-class roller coasters offering sky-high adrenaline-spiking thrills. Wine lovers will want to stop at Sandusky’s Firelands Winery. In its cozy knotty pine tasting room, Firelands offers samples from its own wines as well as other labels they produce, such as Mantey and Lonz. Enjoy a meal at Firelands’ on-site restaurant or play a game of bocce outdoors. Near Sandusky, The Winerie has taken residence inside a former barn. The new owners have kept the barn’s rustic character while adding a covered outdoor patio and a tasting room complete with rough-hewn timbers and a wagon-wheel chandelier. Try any of the two-dozen estate-grown wines. Frequent ferry crossings make the offshore islands as popular an attraction as the mainland. Travel to The Gideon Owen Wine Company on nearby Catawba Island. Owner Quintin Smith offers upscale casual fare, and with an eye to reviving Catawba Island’s once-thriving wine industry, Smith has planted six acres of vineyards.

Toledo is known as the Glass City, and you can see why at the Toledo Museum of Art, which offers free admission and glassblowing workshops. Learn more history as you travel from prehistoric times to the 1920s at Sauder Village in Archbold, where you’ll even find a speakeasy hidden in the 1920s Main Street. Their restaurant even serves locally made wine from Knotty Vines Winery. Nearby in Wauseon, Knotty Vines offers a homey tasting room surrounded by hundreds of vines on what was once part of the farm where owner Steve Nofziger grew up. Near downtown Napoleon and overlooking the Maumee River, the Lumberyard Winery offers wines like its Two by Four Riesling and Weathered Wood Viognier in what was once an actual lumberyard. When Stoney Ridge Winery opened in 2002 outside Bryan, it was a pioneer in the region. Nowadays, it produces mostly estate-grown wines using cold-hardy French-American hybrid grapes to make its best-selling “Barn Dance” wines, as well as a line of fruit wines and its popular Slap Happy Cider. In the countryside outside Napoleon, Leisure Time Winery offers wines like Wine O’Clock and Stress Reliever in a tranquil wooded setting. Their outdoor patio is especially popular in the summertime. Majestic Oak Winery, on a country road six miles out of Grand Rapids, is named for a towering white oak tree, estimated to be at least 175 years old. Majestic Oaks’ onsite Neon Groundhog Brewery produces a variety of small-batch beers. An expansion to include hard cider is planned for this year.

The medieval decor includes a suit of armor and crossed swords adorning the walls. At nearby Cherry Road Winery, fans of the Ohio State Buckeyes will want to sample either the OH or the IO wine, which the winemakers proclaim stands for “Only Happy in Ohio.” In Canal Fulton, stop by Dragonfly Winery attached to the Dragonfly Tea Room, which is housed inside a historic train station. Enjoy warm-weather entertainment on their large patio stage overlooking the banks of the Tuscarawas River. South of Canton, Creekside Cottage Winery looks like a homey bungalow in a wooded setting. In fact, it once was an actual bungalow where nine children grew up, including a friend of owners Steve and Jennifer Miller. The unique wines made here include three made with hops and flavored wines like Kiwi Pear Sauvignon Blanc. A turn-of-the-century flour mill is now home to Baltic Mill Winery. Check out the workings of the mill that are still in place, and sip on a glass of Little Daisy, a white wine named after the flour once milled here. At Bent Ladder Cider and Wine outside Doylestown, all the apples and grapes used in the cider and wine are grown, pressed, and fermented on site. The wine is award-winning — Bent White took double gold medals while the Vidal Blanc was awarded a gold medal in last year’s Ohio Wine Competition. Eight different varieties of hard cider are available, as well as four Heritage Varieties, made primarily with specialty and heirloom apples.

ROCKY POINT WINERY: KEVIN KOPANSKI

Open To The Public

Upstairs from the Rocky Point Winery in Marblehead, The Red Fern Inn was built as a schoolhouse in 1893. It’s just a quarter mile to the iconic Marblehead Lighthouse and a block from the ferry to Kelleys Island. Climb the spiral staircase to the cupola for a view of Lake Erie.

The Lakehouse Inn Winery (ABOVE LEFT) in Geneva-on-the-Lake resembles a rambling white farmhouse, with eight rooms, many with fireplaces and whirlpool tubs, and three cottages just 100 yards from the shore of Lake Erie.

Dalton Union Winery and Brewery, in a countryside setting seven miles out of Marysville, offers a huge 2,000 square feet Airbnb with its own theater room, poker room, pool table and patio. The suite is just steps away from the winery, which also offers craft beers and hard cider.

Dutch Creek Winery offers accommodations inside a vintage yellow C & O caboose (ABOVE MIDDLE) that’s been completely renovated. The caboose is located on a winding rural road about 11 miles outside Athens and about a half mile from the winery.

Rent the entire 1890 Guest House with its four guest rooms at Breitenbach Wine Cellars (ABOVE RIGHT) near Dover. Furnished with rustic farmhouse decor, the house also has a modern kitchen and a fire pit outside. The winery and cafe are just across the road, or guests can take a hike through the woods to Breitenbach’s Dusk – Wine and Fire Bar.

“Growing up on the farm taught me the value of hard work, getting up early and staying until the job was done,” says Tony Kosicek of Kosicek Vineyards in Harpersfield. Kosicek is a third-generation grape farmer. His grandfather, who immigrated from Slovenia, started growing grapes in northeast Ohio in 1929. The younger Kosicek and his wife, Mauri, established Kosicek Vineyards in 2012, where they produce more than 20 varieties of red and white wine sourced from the estate vineyards. A fourth generation, their children Emma and Anthony, are also involved in the family businesses. “Some of the best memories are those of our friends and family planting our vineyards and working with us in the winery,” Kosicek says. Hard work and camaraderie are common themes among other owners of family-owned wineries. Marisa Sergi, co-owner of L’uva Bella Winery in Lowellville and founder of Red’s Wine, says family-run wineries also build a positive relationship with their associates. “There’s a stronger sense of ownership from the executives and a stronger passion from the family members involved to continue with the heritage of the business that inevitably transcends into our employees’ dedication to the company,” Sergi says. Sergi and her husband, Evan Schumann, purchased the family winery from Sergi’s parents, Frank and Ruth Sergi, in 2020. Frank started the business in 2006, selling home winemaking juices to local winemakers. Their wine made from California grapes is now found in major retailers across seven states. This “vested interest” can spill over to customers who frequent family-owned wineries, says Matt Layton, of Indian Spring Winery in Sardinia. “We can offer a more personal connection with our customers,” says Layton, who owns the winery with his

Jobs around Indian Spring Winery are split among the family members, including wine production, grounds and maintenance, music and food preparation. The job of “Popsicle Man” belonged to Layton’s father-in-law, Vernon Creighton, who died in 2016. It entailed delivering frozen treats to children at the countryside winery in the heat of the summer. “He lived up to the title. Nobody could really ever fill his shoes,” Layton says fondly.

The cozy feeling that family-owned businesses convey can be felt all the way in the tasting room, adds Thomas Van Creasap, who owns Shamrock Vineyard in Waldo, a winery established by his grandparents. “In-depth tours and sit-down tastings give guests a pulse for what it’s like to own and operate a winery, all while they’re getting to know the actual winemaker and grower,” Van Creasap says. The late Dr. Thomas Quilter, and his wife, Mary, established Shamrock in 1971 when Quilter began planting grapevines as a hobby at the former grain farm, replacing the roses he’d

first planted in the 1950s. Their sweet table wines have been bottled under the name Chateau Shamrock since 1984. “We’ve tried to stay true to my grandfather’s original plans for this business,” says Van Creasap, who took over the vineyard after their deaths. “The wine list is very similar.” Yet change is always happening, and while the process for winemaking stays true to the family roots, other aspects of the business must evolve. “If there’s anything that’s changed, it’s probably marketing. We do so much online now,” says Beau Guilliams, who owns Raven’s Glenn Winery & Restaurant in West Lafayette with wife, Tracy. His parents started the family business in 2003 with 2,500 gallons of wine. Today, the second generation of Guilliams produce over 215,000 bottles and more than 20 varietals from dry to sweet. “In the end, business is business,” says Guilliams. “Tracy and I are both passionate about what we do. We try not to take everything personally. Our priorities are to make sure the customers are taken care of and the quality of wine is No. 1.”

Extinguish your thirst at Old Firehouse Winery on the shores of Lake Erie in Geneva. As you’ve probably guessed from the name, it’s situated in an old firehouse – the first firehouse in Geneva-onthe-Lake, to be exact! Old Firehouse also lays claim to being the only winery in the world with its own Ferris wheel, located on the winery’s beautiful sunset patio. The brightly colored 1956 Ferris wheel is open nightly during the summer, offering elevated views of stunning Lake Erie sunsets. During Prohibition, Heineman Winery in Put-in-Bay managed to survive thanks to a unique underground tourist attraction: the world’s largest geode! Today you can still tour the Crystal Cave 40 feet below the winery. First discovered in 1897, the cave is lined with bluish celestite crystals that range from eight to 18 inches long. All ages are welcome to tour the cave from early May through late September. Enjoy an included glass of wine or grape juice after the tour. The Merry Family Winery and Old Mill Craft Beer in Bidwell makes its home in a former gristmill once owned by Jewell Evans, wife of restaurateur Bob Evans. The familyrun establishment offers a collection of wines as well as house-made craft beers, ciders and sodas. Whatever you choose to sip on, it’s best enjoyed under the vaulted ceilings in the winery’s spacious tasting room or sitting on the chairs out front and gazing over the beautiful vineyards. At Sarah's Vineyard in Cuyahoga Falls, you can explore the great outdoors after you sip a Blue Heron Blush or Hampton Hills Chardonnay — the vineyard and tasting room are located inside Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
