MMy name means Shooting Star in Shawnee. In 1768, I was born on tribal land near Chillicothe, nestled in the Scioto River valley that would eventually become part of the rolling hills of southern Ohio. As a child, I learned the art of hunting on these lands. We grew squash and beans in rich soil and fished the plentiful river, as we had for generations. Since I was 15, it has been said that I was a great warrior. As even more white men, who we call Shemanese, began to enter the Kan-tuck-kee country to the south, we found our lives beginning to change. Our leadership and warriors knew the Shemanese would inevitably cross the Ohio River and move into Shawnee country. It was clear to me that to defeat the Shemanese, all tribes

would need to unite. I urged other tribes to come together under one sun and one moon. With my gifts of persuasion, strategy, bravery and oratory skill, I convinced my brothers to join together.

When the War of 1812 broke out, my warriors fought alongside the British who, unlike American settlers, did not steal tribal land. But even with the support of other tribes joining the Shawnee, we found ourselves outnumbered in many battles. The Great Spirit did not grant us victory. With heavy hearts, my people were driven from our homes along the Scioto to the West. My words, “Show respect to all people and grovel to none,” have been repeated often. Though shooting stars may fall, their brilliance enlightens many.

For over 50 years, the unique and immersive show Tecumseh! has been performed on Sugarloaf Mountain. With recent upgrades like a new sound system, a remastered soundtrack and set redesigns, the show puts you in the middle of the action and teaches you about the legendary Shawnee leader and his fight to defend the Shawnee homeland. Every October, Sugarloaf Mountain becomes Haunted Mountain, a Halloween attraction for everyone in the family.

II am the voice of Native Americans around the Great Lakes whose cultures flourished beginning more than 2,000 years ago.

Our existence and the echoes of how we once lived and died have become mere shadows on the land. But in the Scioto River valley close to Chillicothe, fragments of our legacy and that of the Hopewell culture endure.

Here we built incredible earthworks in precise circles, squares and more geometric shapes on a massive scale. We honor the Earth, the Sky and the Water by crafting these earthworks by the basketful near waterways. They offered us the persistence of the great winds above and the strength of the hills surrounding us.

The sacred mounds, serving as burial and ceremonial sites,

were our link to our ancestors and family members who ventured beyond our reach, whom we reverently honored. Constructed to align with celestial patterns — the stars, seasonal solstices, equinoxes and the extensive lunar cycle spanning 18 years and 219 days — these structures honor the Creator and the Universe. They are our way of celebrating the sun, moon and stars that guide us as we plant our crops.

They were built to last until the end of time. Our descendants, those who came after us and lived here in this area since the earthworks were built, are our relatives, and they looked after the sacred sites. They showed respect for our history and did not build on top of them.

Witness living history at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, when you walk among mounds built thousands of years ago by Native Americans. Your dog is also welcome to walk the trails with you as you gain insight into America’s past. “The Native Americans were a cultural and religious group of people, and these mounds were sacred to them,” says Chief Glenna J. Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe. “The mounds are more than a physical, tangible thing — there’s also a spirituality there.” Learn more in the park museum and see cultural artifacts in the visitor center.

thomas worthington’s story

WWhen I came to Ohio in 1796, it was to survey military land grants in the Northwest Territory. Seeing the fertility of the Territory’s land gave me hope for a brighter future and the idea to buy and re-sell land in the Scioto River valley.

So, in 1798, I left my Virginia home and settled in Chillicothe with my wife, Eleanor, and my infant daughter, Mary.

In the spring of 1802, my family moved into a temporary log home northwest of Chillicothe. Five years later, in the fall of 1807, I moved Eleanor and our five children to our completed home. We were blessed with 10 total children, five girls and five boys.

To further develop the landscaping of our mansion, I hired German indentured servants who developed an extensive orchard to the west and a three-terrace garden

to the east. I used the beautiful property to entertain many prominent people I met during my efforts to promote statehood for Ohio, a goal that became a reality in 1803 and made Ohio the 17th state.

My moral compass and religious beliefs also led me to support significant social programs like prison reform and assistance to the state’s poor. The canal system was integral to improving Ohio’s transportation and commerce, and the development of a state library and free public education were also necessary.

I was proud to represent Ohio as one of its first two United States senators, then again later as the sixth governor. I earned the title “Father of Ohio Statehood” in recognition of my leadership and dedication to both the cause of statehood and the ongoing development of the state.

See Ohio through the eyes of one of its earliest leaders. Adena Mansion, completed in 1807, was the home of Thomas Worthington, Ohio’s sixth governor. The former estate’s 300 acres have been restored to help visitors experience the mansion and its gardens in the same way the Worthington family would have in the early 1800s. The view from the mansion was so remarkable, it inspired the Great Seal of the State of Ohio. Look eastward to see the beauty of the Mt. Logan Range.

WORLD SPOTLIGHT ohio’s earthworks on

RRoss County’s Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is known throughout the world. The “outstanding universal value” of these Native American earthworks was recognized in 2023, as the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks joined the prestigious World Heritage List. With inspiration from the National Park Service, the UNESCO World Heritage List was established in 1972 to foster global cooperation in protecting the world’s most significant cultural and natural treasures.

Over 1,000 properties with significance in an international context are on the list — including the Pyramids of Giza, Stonehenge and the Grand Canyon. The United States only has 25 World Heritage sites, and Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks is the first in Ohio.

“More people are realizing that the earthworks have a beautiful history that is absolutely invaluable,” says Chief Glenna J. Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe. “It’s like experiencing an awakening that just keeps getting broader, and that makes me immensely proud.”

The Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks inscription includes five earthworks at the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Ross County, along with Newark Earthworks’ Octagon and the Great Circle in Licking County and Fort Ancient Earthworks in Warren County.

The earthworks, built between around A.D. 1 and A.D. 400 by Native Americans, are a ceremonial gathering place for people who traveled from distances as far as the Yellowstone basin and Florida. “This was a pilgrimage, similar to going to Jerusalem or Mecca,” says Chief Wallace. They are some of the largest earthworks in the world not created to be defensive structures or fortifications.

The earthworks form a variety of precise shapes including squares, circles and octagons, as well as a hilltop designed to enclose a plaza. Incredibly, the forms align with the cycles of the sun and the patterns of the moon.

“It proves they were far more than the ‘savages’ they’ve been referred to as,” says Chief Wallace. “They had to have a command of mathematics, an understanding of our galaxy and also have a cultural and artistic side.”

In Ross County’s Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, five earthwork complexes are preserved: Hopeton Earthworks, Hopewell Mound Group, Mound City Group, Seip Earthworks and High Bank Works (not open to the public). Many of these structures were built to a massive scale: geometric shapes over 1,000 feet across and earthen walls reaching 12 feet high.

The largest set of geometric earthworks ever built is the Newark Earthworks. The pieces remaining in wellpreserved condition — the Octagon Earthworks and Great Circle Earthworks — are unique contributions to the inscription. The Octagon is made up of a precisely crafted circle and adjoining octagonal structure spanning over half a mile. These structures have perfectly formed embankments at eye level that align with eight significant rise and set points of the moon’s complex 18.6-year cycle. The Great Circle houses the tallest surviving gateway from the Hopewell civilization, boasting an entrance that stands over 20 feet tall.

The earthen embankments of Fort Ancient stretch along the edge of a plateau for over 3.5 miles, showcasing remarkable views down to the Little Miami River. Four stone-covered mounds form a perfect square that aligns with solar and lunar events.

12:30 p.m. Grab lunch at The Coop Chillicothe before your rejuvenating afternoon. Enjoy tasty brunch options or lunch specials.

Start your day 2,000 years ago with a visit to Hopewell Culture National Historical Park’s Mound City site. Walk where ancient Native American ancestors gathered and constructed the impressive earthen enclosure and burial mounds. Interact with the onsite National Park rangers to learn about these impressive earthworks.

11 a.m. Your next stop will bring you back into the 19th century with a tour of Adena Mansion & Gardens. Take time to learn about life in the 1800s with the interactive museum exhibits, and then tour the mansion where you will discover more about life in the time period and the lives of the Worthington family who once resided there. Thomas Worthington was an important part of Ohio becoming the 17th state.

12:30 p.m.

Ready for lunch? Enjoy a delicious farm meal at Bell Farms or grab some burgers and fries at 50 West Brewing Co. While you’re downtown, explore some of the unique shops or jump onto the trolley for a ride through the district.

2:30 p.m.

After lunch, step through time and many decades with a tour of the Ross County Historical Society. Here you can explore the collections and exhibits such as the antique vehicles, Native American artifacts, the history of Camp Sherman and WWI, vintage toys and the railroad system, just to name a few.

4 p.m. Check in at your hotel, then head to Pap’s Hilltop Distillery, a microdistillery crafting small-batch spirits and more than 12 varieties of moonshine.

5:30 p.m. Enjoy a flavorful dinner before the show! Find your new favorite dish at Lievita, a farm-to-table Italian restaurant using locally sourced ingredients.

7 p.m. Wrap up your day on Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre for the captivating story of Tecumseh! Outdoor Drama. Here you will be immersed with galloping horses, a military cannon in action and spectacular battle sequences.

8 a.m. Get the day started with a scenic hike or mountain bike ride along the trails at Great Seal State Park. There are more than 23 miles of trails for hiking and 17 miles of multi-use trails for biking. These trails provide some steep inclines and deep ravines for a more challenging experience. If you prefer a scenic hike without the challenge, check out the trails at Scioto Trail State Park

10 a.m. Now it’s time to explore a serene trip along Paint Creek with Water’s Edge Canoe Livery. Kayak or canoe along the creek that’s ideal for paddling or fishing.

1 p.m. Grab some lunch and sip on a pint at Chillicothe’s gastropub, the Pour House at Machinery Hall

2:30 p.m. The last hike of the day will afford you stunning views of vertical cliffs of sandstone and shale at the Earl H. Barnhart Buzzard’s Roost Nature Preserve. This adventure will provide scenic views of vernal pools and deep wooded ravines as you make your way to the cliffs that descend into the Paint Creek Gorge.

5:30 p.m. Taste the amazing flavors of southern Ohio barbecue at Old Canal Smokehouse before driving out to Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre.

MAIL POUCH

In the days of early advertising, the Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company painted murals for Mail Pouch chewing tobacco on 20,000 barns and buildings. This mural, painted between 1880 and 1892, was discovered after a fire in 2006 destroyed the surrounding buildings that kept it hidden. Find it at 25 E. Second Street in Chillicothe.

CHILLICOTHE TELEPHONE

Can you tell which windows are real and which are painted?

Painted by world-renowned muralist Eric Henn in 2006, this photorealistic historical mural at 68 E. Main Street features women strolling the sidewalk, a horse-drawn wagon and a tribute to the Chillicothe Telephone Company.

CANAL

The Ohio and Erie Canal once flowed through Chillicothe and the entire state, driving the local and regional economy for over 70 years. Find this mural at the corner of East Second and Mulberry Streets — painted in 2003 by local artist Jeff Speakman — depicting the canal, mills and residential homes of the 19th century.

Level 2 and Level 3 EV chargers are close to unique shopping and dining options in Historic Downtown Chillicothe. Charging stations are also close to our city park and bike trail.

BAINBRIDGE HERITAGE

With a postcard welcome, local artist Pamela Kellough’s 2017 mural depicts images from different eras of Bainbridge’s history: its Native American origins, historic buildings and modern industries. Snap your photo by this mural at 203 E. Main Street.

FRANKFORT HISTORICAL

Stroll down Springfield St. in Frankfort along this 66- by 15-foot mural, painted by Pamela Kellough in 2018. The mural welcomes you with a sunflower — a nod to its annual Sunflower Festival — and depicts many unique parts of the area, including its roots with the Shawnee Native Americans, its agricultural history, landmarks and the Ross County Fair.

A rich diversity of plants and wildlife awaits the careful observer at the preserve. Several species of birds have been spotted here, along with a wide range of plant life. Keep an eye out for stone foundations that serve as the last indications of decaying home sites and maybe an old well or two. Numerous former logging roads crisscross the area and make for easy walking. The former Barnhart home is used for educational, nature-oriented activities.

The challenge is rewarding, with scenic vistas of distant ridge tops and the Scioto Valley below. These very hills are depicted on the Great Seal of the State of Ohio, which gives the park its name.

KINNIKINNICK WILDLIFE AREA

The forests here are home to a variety of woodland creatures, including whitetail deer, gray squirrels and cottontail rabbits. Spot bald eagles and migratory birds in the sky, and hunt or fish for a variety of waterfowl and fish in the Scioto River.

PLEASANT VALLEY WILDLIFE AREA

Near Chillicothe, this section of forests, brushland and cropland teems with fish, gray and fox squirrels, cottontail rabbits, deer and ring-necked pheasants for hunting, fishing or simply admiring. Amongst the diverse habitat, you’ll spot a variety of songbirds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and mourning doves.

ROSS LAKE WILDLIFE AREA

Public hunting is available on 1,112 acres surrounding Ross Lake. Walk the short trails, fish from three earthen fishing piers or take your boat, canoe or kayak on the 127-acre lake.

Getting its name from its location in Paint Creek Valley, this 5,652-acre park welcomes water lovers to a large lake with fishing, boating and swimming. For those who prefer to stick to land, there are also four hiking trails, an additional 25 miles of bridle trails and 12 miles of mountain bike trails. A modern campground, a yurt and two deluxe camper cabins are available for overnight accommodations.
