Every year, my family heads into the season with a list of places we want to go, things we want to do and memories we want to make. We talk about spending more time outdoors, trying new restaurants, catching local events and taking advantage of everything happening right here in our own backyard. Then life gets busy, weekends fill up and, before we know it, summer is halfway over.

That’s one reason I love this issue.

Lorain County offers no shortage of ways to make the most of the season.

Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly adventure, a peaceful place to enjoy nature, an outdoor concert, a scenic patio or a new favorite spot for ice cream, you’ll find plenty of inspiration in these pages. In fact, we’re willing to bet you’ll discover some new favorites.

Our cover story explores some of the county’s hidden escapes and summer experiences, from hiking trails and beaches to wildlife destinations and waterfront entertainment. We’ve also highlighted great places to enjoy outdoor dining — because few things say summer quite like a meal shared with family and friends on a patio.

The best part? You don’t have to travel far to find something special. Some of the region’s most memorable experiences are just a short drive away. They’re the LoCo we love.

Rockin’ on the River brings new attractions to Black River Landing this summer. By Lara Busbold

Now there’s a true six-foot decline into a grass bowl, and the stage rises up a full five feet out of that. The sight lines are so much better.”

The new permanent stage includes professional rigging points for sound and lighting, reducing labor-intensive setup and allowing for a more polished production.

“Every part of that is going to be better,” Brown says. “We’ll be ready to have a better experience for everybody.”

The amphitheater itself is part of a $10 million improvement project— phase one of an 18-phase vision Brown says will continue evolving into a premier destination.

What makes the project especially significant is how it came together.

Brown credits a wide coalition of partners, including the City of Lorain, Lorain County commissioners, state and local leaders, philanthropic supporters, private donors, and the Lorain County Visitors Bureau, which contributed $750,000 and secured naming rights to the stage.

“When people say it takes a village, it takes a village plus generosity,” Brown says. “That’s been the case.”

And the result is more than just a concert venue—it’s a public space designed for year-round use, whether or not there is a show happening.

“It’s going to be a piece of art,” Brown says. “Even when there isn’t a concert, you can come down, have a picnic, do yoga, walk your dog. It’s a beautiful waterfront.”

All eyes now turn to June 5, when Brown hopes a ribbon-cutting will unveil the venue’s next era.

“I want to astound everybody with the new sound, the new lights and the new atmosphere,” he says.

For longtime fans and first-time visitors alike, ROTR is offering a reimagined waterfront experience — one built by a community and ready to take center stage.

This summer, Rockin’ on the River (ROTR) enters its 12th season at Black River Landing with a bold new chapter — one defined by national talent and a brand new amphitheater built through an extraordinary community effort.

For Lorain Port Authority Operations Director Tom Brown, this season represents both a milestone and a promise fulfilled.

“I think the big standout this year,” Brown says, “is that we partnered with the Lorain County Visitors Bureau, and they’re helping co-sponsor bringing in national recording artists.”

That partnership has elevated the concert series in a major way. Labor Day weekend will feature country headliner Chris Lane, whose two billion streams and three No. 1 hits make him one of the series’ biggest bookings to date. Joining him as a special guest is Tyler Farr, another Nashville recording artist with three chart-topping hits.

“It shows we were serious when we said we wanted to expand our repertoire and start bringing in national acts,” Brown says.

But Rockin’ on the River series has built a reputation as an affordable Friday night tradition where families spread out on the lawn, friends gather over food and music plays against the backdrop of passing freighters and opening bridges.

“There’s just some magic that happens on the water,” Brown says.

“Where else can you go to see a concert and a freighter comes by and shines its lights on the crowd?”

That experience remains at the heart of the season. But this year, visitors will notice dramatic improvements.

After years of relying on a temporary stage structure, Black River Landing now features a permanent amphitheater that Brown describes as both functional and artistic.

“It’s actually a full amphitheater now,” he says. “We were a flat field.

May 7 acknowledged almost 200 students, according to Mathias Hauck, Lorain County JVS workforce development strategist and career services specialist.

Signing seniors from all of LCJVS’ 25 career tech programs attended the event, which Stormy Rush, robotics, engineering and innovation instructor, calls “different success stories all wrapped into one.” One half of the students in her program qualified to participate.

“The event allows kids to shine that night. It’s an opportunity to be honored for their skills or trade and their dedication to their employers,” says Rush. Signing Day companies that participated in her program included Rebuild: Build Cutting Dynamics, Lake

The baseball caps may look like just traditional headgear.

But they bear the name of numerous companies in Northeast Ohio. On Lorain County JVS’s annual Signing Day, the caps are presented to seniors who are already employed or who are committed to full-time roles in their careers, and connected to college or Armed Services.

It’s symbolic of the exemplary work reflected across the region from students and the support of their parents, the commitment of more than 100 industry partners and Lorain County JVS’s unwavering dedication to ensuring talent is prepared for today’s workforce.

A variety of major career options are important to today’s students, according to Hauck. Currently there are more than 1,500 9-12 graders and adult learners enrolled in the school, located on a 150-acre campus in Oberlin. Thirteen school districts are represented. Recent data shows 71% of LCJVS graduates enter the workforce immediately after high school. Another 56.6% pursue college and apprentice opportunities while also working, and 4.5% choose military service. A total of 91% of LCJVS graduates are employed after graduation. That figure “is evidence that our students are leaving here with real skills, real confidence and real value to employers,” says Hauck.

UNDECIDED FRESHMAN TO CONFIDENT GRADUATE When we last looked in on LCJVS and Elyria High School student Zoe Scheithauer, she was an undergrad just starting her educational pathway to her chosen career. Scheithauer admitted she “didn’t know a lot” about LCJVS, but enrolled with her father’s encouragement. She selected welding as her program, but soon found herself shifting to engineering.

“The teachers here are so involved with students but you aren’t pushed to

go in one direction,” says Scheitauer.

Scheitauer will attend Lorain County Community College this fall and will receive an associate of science degree after two years. Then she will transfer to Cleveland State University to earn a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering technology.

This summer, Scheitauer will continue to work at Lake Erie Electric, her LCJVS partner employer during high school, and continue throughout college.

LCCC Community. That first course launched four years of college coursework through College Credit Plus (CCP), during which he earned more than 60 LCCC credits while attending Brookside High School.

This May, Smith graduates with both his high school diploma and an associate of science degree from LCCC — one of 150 students in the Class of 2026 who earned an associate degree while still in high school through dual enrollment programs including CCP, Early College High School and Career Technical Education. Together, those students saved their families more than $1.8 million in tuition costs.

Lorain County Community College’s Class of 2026 is helping strengthen the region’s workforce and expand opportunity across Northeast Ohio. This year, 2,053 graduates earned a record-breaking 3,431 degrees and credentials — the largest number ever awarded to a graduating class in LCCC history.

Among those graduates is Elijah Smith, who began his college journey at LCCC when he was just 13 years old.

Smith was in eighth grade when he took his first Lorain County Community College class, successfully completing Student Development (SDEV) 101: Introduction to the

“LCCC has the second-best nursing program in the state, with the second highest passing rate of the NCLEX,” Smith says. “So, I decided to come here, plus they awarded me the Trustee Scholarship.

It was the best of both worlds.”

The Class of 2026 also included 11 graduates who earned Bachelor of Applied Science degrees in Microelectronic Manufacturing or Smart Industrial Automated Systems Engineering Technology — programs designed to meet growing workforce demand in advanced manufacturing and semiconductor industries. Another 144 graduates earned bachelor’s or master’s degrees through LCCC’s University Partnership.

Reflecting LCCC’s mission to expand opportunity, 39 percent of the Class of 2026 are first-generation college graduates — the first in their families to earn a college degree.

“I feel like I’m really ahead,” Smith says. “LCCC and the CCP program have provided an amazing community that has helped uplift me and prepare me for what’s next.”

“I took CCP classes because I wanted to get a little bit ahead,” Smith says. “I wanted to try and gain as much credit for free as I could, before I went off to college.”

College Credit Plus is a statefunded program that allows students to earn college credits at no cost while in high school.

“I saved my family a ton of money, which my parents were very happy about,” Smith says. “That was probably the main reason I did it. We thought, ‘It’s free, let’s give it a shot.’”

Balancing a full high school schedule with an average of nine college credit hours each semester taught Smith discipline and time management.

“I had to set aside time during the day to do certain homework, and I had to make sure I didn’t procrastinate on anything,” he says. “My parents were a big help, too. They helped me stay on track.”

Smith plans to continue his education at LCCC in the associate degree nursing program after researching the college’s strong reputation in healthcare education.

Exploring the region’s parks offers an opportunity to connect with nature while burning off that endless youthful energy.

In the heart of the Elyria, Cascade and Elywood parks serve as the crown jewels of the natural landscape. Known for dramatic shale cliffs, waterfalls and the rushing waters of the Black River, these areas provide a scenic backdrop that feels miles away from the urban bustle. Generous picnic spaces and playgrounds make it a full-day destination.

“This is a Lorain County Metro Park, and we love that they have invested in our city and continue to make these parks safe and enjoyable for all,” says Carrie Reardon, parks and recreation director for the city of Elyria.

Nearby, West Park also has blossomed into a premier family destination, especially with the recent completion of its inclusive playground. A first for Elyria, the inclusive playground is designed with direct input from residents, who voted for features like the roller table, inclusive orbit and cirrus swing. There’s also music, slides, swings and

a poured-in-place rubber surface to ensure accessibility for everyone.

“We felt that having a place for all kids to interact with their peers was very important and valuable,” Reardon shares.

West Park also boasts a splash pad, walking trail and pickleball courts, plus it hosts the city's annual fireworks show on July 2.

Reardon points out that the city boasts a busy lineup of special events, adding, “We offer a family swim time at our pools on Saturday evenings, and our dive-in movies are a perfect summer activity.”

For families looking to traverse paved, stroller-friendly paths under a thick canopy of mature trees, the Kopf Family Reservation in Avon Lake is an idyllic choice. The trail system winds through serene woodlands, making it easy for little legs to explore without navigating rough terrain. Further west, the Amherst HealthPlex at Hollstein Reservation showcases an inclusive playground with structured and natural play areas complete with swings, a sand pit, fishing pond, slide and stage for kids who want to show off their creative side. The area also features a splashpad with accessibility for children in wheelchairs.

A minimal admission fee is required.

Meanwhile, Wellington Reservation welcomes visitors with wide-open skies and

over 4 miles of trails surrounding a beautiful 21-plus-acre lake. Families can rent paddleboats for a gentle afternoon on the water or cast a line to introduce the kids to the joys of catch-and-release fishing.

If you’re looking for a mix of education and play, head to the French Creek Nature Center in Sheffield Village. Mariah Deitz, public information officer for Lorain County Metro Parks, notes that the center provides an “immersive nature experience with diverse habitats and trails.” Inside, children can view wildlife exhibits and engage with hands-on displays before heading outside to walk the forested paths.

No Lorain County summer is complete without a trip to Lakeview Park in Lorain.

Boasting a vibrant rose garden, wide sandy beach and convenient amenities like a lunch cafe and family shower rooms, this lakeside oasis is the ideal place to build a sandcastle, swim in the lake and watch the sunset.

“Families with young children will find plenty of welcoming spaces throughout the park system,” Deitz says. “Carlisle Visitor Center’s Children’s Discovery Trail, indoor play space, Raptor Center and Discovery Den make it a great stop for sunshine or rainy days. Amherst Beaver Creek’s flat, stroller-friendly trails make it easy to explore.”

Sandy Ridge Reservation in North Ridgeville is widely considered the premier birdwatching destination in the region. Nearly 250 species have been observed since the park’s opening in 1999. Deitz notes it’s a favorite Lorain County destination, “especially for its elevated boardwalk trails through wetlands that are rich with wildlife.”

The heart of the reservation is a roughly 2-mile crushed stone trail that circles the marsh.

During the summer months, the wetlands are teeming with life. From nesting bald eagles and great blue herons stalking the shallows to playful muskrats and graceful swans, the expansive wetland acts as a vibrant nursery. Visitors should start at the Perry F. Johnson Wetland Center to learn about the local ecosystem before heading out with their binoculars. Whether you’re an expert birder keeping a life list or just someone who enjoys a peaceful morning walk, the sights and sounds of Sandy Ridge are unforgettable.

The Miller Nature Preserve rests on 145 acres of woodlands and has a café, visitor's center, gift shop, event hall and a 5,000-square-foot conservatory.

As the sun begins to dip below the horizon and the heat of the afternoon fades, the energy in Lorain County shifts from the winding park trails to the vibrant outdoor stages. Summer nights here are defined by the rhythm of the river, crack of a baseball bat and harmonious sounds of communities gathering under the open sky.

Rockin’ on the River (ROTR) in Lorain is the undisputed heavyweight of the summer entertainment scene, drawing massive crowds and electrifying the waterfront. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this season, the event has called Black River Landing home for the past 12 years.

“Rockin’ on the River is where you’re at on a summer Friday night in Lorain,” says Tiffany McClelland, executive director of the Lorain Port and Finance Authority. With a brand-new amphitheater that opened on June 5, the venue is ready to host crowds of around 5,000 people per show.

“The atmosphere is unparalleled, as we offer over 15 acres to roam along the Black River in the shadow of the Charles Berry Bridge,” McClelland adds. “Whether you want to stand in front of the stage and get close to the band, walk the festival pavilion area, sit on the slope and relax, go down to the docks or just walk the entire site and socialize, Black River Landing and ROTR has it all for you.”

This year’s greatest hits lineup features national country artists Chris Lane and Tyler Farr on Sept. 4th, along with the highly anticipated return of the Pink Floyd tribute band, Wish You Were Here. Visitors can feast from 12 food vendors offering gyros, pizza, barbecue and walking tacos while enjoying milkshakes, slushies, draft beer and cocktail offerings.

But the music does not stop at the landing.

The Lorain County Metro Parks’ Summer Concert Series provides free outdoor entertainment on Thursday and Sunday evenings at Lakeview Park, Miller Nature Preserve and Vermilion River Reservation.

“Lorain County comes alive in the summer with outdoor entertainment,” Deitz notes.

“These experiences combine fresh air, local talent, and a strong sense of community, making them a highlight of the season.”

Passage of that amendment allows for a yet undetermined developer to present a plan to the City, says Spaetzel. He adds that any plan a developer brings forward would need approval through a multilayered process that includes the City's Development Review Committee, Planning Commission and City Council.

The City hopes that by summer 2026, the Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group will have engaged a vertical developer to begin the process, Spaetzel says. From there, the project will likely take several years and various phases before it’s completed.

“Once we know those things, people will have a much better sense of how the process is going to work, but it’s one of those situations where things need to fall into place in a certain order,” Esborn says.

All in all, Spaetzel says the purchase and initial development of the park would be accomplished at a low risk to the community through tax increment financing and not through the general fund of the City.

“Avon Lake has a once-in-a-century opportunity to positively affect the community and take advantage of our lakefront,” Spaetzel says. “This plan fits with the desire expressed by the community and outlined in our Comprehensive Land Use Plan from 2019 for additional public access to the lake.”

he former NRG Energy Power Plant on Lake Road in Avon Lake closed in 2022 and was subsequently demolished, but the City of Avon Lake is powering forward to usher the site into a new era.

Big plans are underway to transform the space into a vibrant mixed-use residential, retail and commercial lakefront destination, with a 23-acre lakefront park as its centerpiece.

“The City's goals for the power plant property have always been focused on creating public access to Lake Erie,” says Avon Lake Mayor Mark Spaetzel. “Lake access is what our residents have consistently told us they want, and a mixed-use development would allow us to provide that access while also spurring additional commercial, retail and residential development on the west side of town.”

The new parkland will connect to the adjacent Miller Road Park, which is a 17-acre park with a fishing pier and boat launch.

“A lakefront park meets the goals of the city to create new lake access, but it also meets the needs of a private developer wanting to create the kind of space that people are going to want to live and work in,” says Ted Esborn, Community Development Director for Avon Lake. “The multiple uses will make it a place that Avon Lakers want to visit to take advantage of those businesses.”
