New member Tracy Shaabban, owner of Studious Beauty, says making those peer connections has been an asset to her salon. “The networking events are unique and fun,” she says. “I’ve also enjoyed the advertising benefits and the great support we’ve gotten from other local small businesses.”

The Chamber has also helped businesses integrate more deeply with the North Canton community. One way is through sponsorship opportunities with local events like the Chocolate Walk, a self-guided walking tour of downtown North Canton businesses that includes sweet treats at each stop. “It’s a great way to get people in the door,” says KeyBank manager and chamber member Katelyn McAllister.

“The Chamber has helped me connect with people I may not have otherwise. You want to do business with people you like, know and trust, and these types of events help bring you face to face.”

here’s a real sense of community in North Canton, and that doesn’t happen by accident. Residents have access to — and utilize — a number of hubs and programs that intentionally foster the feeling that North Canton is home.

The North Canton YMCA offers “a swim and a gym,” of course, but the association’s facilities also offer programming for all ages and interests, explains Associate Executive Director Mike Scarpino. “We have card clubs, Taekwondo, prayer groups. Whether your interests are mental, spiritual or physical, we’ve got something for you.” And no one is turned away due to inability to pay. “No matter your ability level, age, race, political preference — we want you here,” says Scarpino, noting that during the pandemic, staff called seniors to make sure they were okay in addition to other pandemic-related services. YMCA facilities also have elevators as necessary, accessible doors, and other amenities to make sure that staff and visitors of all abilities are part of the community. “For anyone looking to connect with their neighbor and get to know their community, this is the spot to be,” says Scarpino.

Another organization that brings the community together is the North Canton Farmers Market, which operates year round.

It opened in June of 2020, offering “access to fresh, local food and space for regional small businesses to thrive,” notes Managing Director Jena Grosschmidt. In addition to seasonal, local produce, the market offers everything from honey to hot sauce to hair

accessories, as well as meats, bakery items and artisan crafts, all locally made. The outdoor season, which kicks off May 4, will see the addition of children’s activities, live music, wellness events and giveaways.

Vendors and community members of all abilities take part, and locations offer accessible parking and entrances. “The market aids the community in obtaining optimal health and having a positive space to safely gather while providing an opportunity for small businesses to thrive and our local economy to grow,” says Grosschmidt.

Visitors to the North Canton Farmers Market might even encounter a table and booth sponsored by the North Canton Public Library, another community hub for residents. Library Director Andrea Legg explains that the standalone, independent library has a goal of bringing the library into the community, which often means thinking outside the box. The challenges of COVID-19, for example, inspired library story times at the public pool and in local parks, both of which Legg hopes to continue.

The library also has a serious commitment to making sure the building is accessible to people who come to them. In the two years Legg’s been director, the library has replaced traditional drinking fountains with more accessible bottle-filling stations, added a wheelchair charging station and installed a sturdy adult changing table in the main-floor bathroom. It’s also a certified KultureCity organization, meaning staff has resources and training in sensory inclusivity. “Libraries are for everyone,” Legg explains.

“We exist for our community. Everything we do is mindful of the

various age groups, social groups and needs a community might have, from physical to emotional to psychological. Even if it’s just one person with one individual need, their needs and accommodations are just as important as other community members.”

North Canton also offers community gathering spaces in its 14 public park and recreational facilities. This includes three large community parks and eight smaller neighborhood parks, as well as the Civic Center and Arrowhead Golf and Event Center. Residents can picnic, swim, play pickle ball, hike and even host an event, depending on the location. It’s just another way North Canton welcomes everyone, creating a deep sense of community that makes this a great place to call home.

INNOVATION IN THE CITY North Canton businesses and institutions are technology trailblazers.

Like most of us, they’ve faced unprecedented challenges and uncertainty over the past few years thanks to the drastically evolving landscape of everyday life. But resiliency and innovation are things the North Canton community do well, and these establishments are leading the charge with cutting-edge tech and creative new ideas.

North Canton’s own Squirrels isn’t just a tech company. It’s a team of problem solvers. CEO Andrew Gould and his business partner, David Stanfill, developed the company’s flagship product, Reflector, by accident when they realized they needed a way to share their screens remotely while developing apps for the medical market. They created the screen mirroring software so their team could easily collaborate, regardless of location.

“It happened to be right at the moment that everyone was putting iPads in the classroom,” Gould recalls. “So we didn’t realize it, but we had a product that more than just app developers wanted.” Reflector is now used in millions of classrooms, homes and offices worldwide, and has become even more prevalent in the age of e-learning and telecommuting. It also spawned another of the company’s successful software programs called Ditto, which is more scalable and better suited for enterprise environments.

For schools, the last two years have been a lesson in adaptation.

Luckily, North Canton City Schools were well prepared for the changes brought on by the pandemic. Each student already had a Chromebook, which made for an easy transition to online learning, with up-to-date curriculum available outside the classroom. “It makes it so that learning is available 24-7, not just when you have a text book,” says Superintendent Jeff Wendorf. In addition, all classrooms are equipped with interactive screens, and the district is currently running a pilot program to determine whether interactive projectors or panels will be the best fit for classrooms going forward.

Walsh University is now home to the most state-of-the-art analytical equipment available.

Thanks to the combined benefits of a SPARQ grant in partnership with Shimadzu Scientific Instruments and the generosity of donors, the Center for Analytical Excellence was dedicated in November. Dan Passerini, executive director of cross-enterprise operations, says the lab offers chemistry-related analytical services at a reduced cost to businesses including analyzing packaging components and raw material quality control. It also provides handson, graduate level lab experience for students. “It is truly a unique, win-win situation that is rarely found in academics,” Passerini says, “especially in a small, liberal arts setting where undergraduate students would not typically have access to such high-end equipment until a graduate-level research experience.”

f the past few years have taught us anything, it’s how important it is to take care of ourselves.

Mental health plays a huge role in our everyday wellness, and having a creative outlet has always been a healthy way to process emotions and express yourself. Thankfully, North Canton is ripe with opportunities for artistic expression.

Painting, sculpture, metalwork. No matter their talent, students at Hoover High School know they can trust visual art teacher Chris Triner to help them make personal masterpieces. “I’ve worked to create an environment in the art room that’s a safe space where students can feel comfortable and confident,” says the mixed media artist who designed the intricate 20-foot mural of iconic Stark County buildings displayed outside the Canton Museum of Art. Hoover High students also present and curate their own art shows, and those wishing to pursue a career in the arts have a chance to develop portfolios and earn college credit in advanced-placement classes. “I instill in my students the concept that it’s important to be adventurous, take risks and try new things,” Triner says. “As a result, they’ll find strengths they might not know they have.”

Visitors to North Canton’s Pav’s Creamery are treated to more than award-winning ice cream. A new mural designed by artist and Hoover High grad Don Hill, owner of Art Uncorked Studio and Gallery, exudes a retro vibe with depictions of Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale (and Toto, too), screen siren Marilyn Monroe and reggae pioneer Bob Marley.

The ice cream cone held by each star adds to the whimsy. Located on the north side of the building, the 12-foot-by-40-foot painting has become a tourist attraction and an ideal place to take selfies. “The idea for a mural was something we’d talked about for a while,” says Pav’s Creamery co-owner Nik Pappas. “Don was the perfect guy to do it.

He chose a diverse group of stars that span decades, saw our building as a blank canvas and added mystique to the bricks and mortar.”

Stark County bibliophiles appreciate the literary masterpieces lining the shelves at the North Canton Public Library. But a different kind of treasure trove awaits visitors in search of exquisite artwork. Since 1930, the library’s Little Art Gallery has grown to include a permanent collection of 200 works of art, including jewelry, painting and sculpture.

Most of the pieces in the permanent collection have been created by artists who have had a pronounced influence on Stark County and are on display several times a year. Every six to eight weeks, the library hosts shows spotlighting new work by local artists, much of which is available for sale. “The idea of a library having an entire gallery devoted to local artists is pretty unique,” says North Canton Public Library community relations director Christina Weyrick. “It makes the library all that more special.” Artists of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in free classes at the library focusing on projects ranging from watercolor landscapes to sewing and therapeutic art.

ArtsinStark has been filling the county with captivating programs for all ages since its founding in 1970. “We have a strong collaborative network of 900 arts and culture nonprofits, and individual artists and makers who strengthen the fabric of our community,” says David Whitehill, president and CEO of the organization. The Canton Ballet, Canton Museum of Art, Players Theatre Guild and Sing Stark! ensemble groups take center stage at the non-profit organization’s 16-acre Cultural Center for the Arts. “Our programs serve not only residents of Stark County, but those who appreciate all the county has to offer,” adds Whitehill.
