We are a family of communities that are working together to boldly set the standard for reinvention and imagination. Our rolling hills reflect the grit and glory of our ups and downs, where the soul of our collective communities has been curated, crafted and cultivated by artists, philosophers, builders, inventors, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Hollywood icons.
We are surrounded by fertile farms settled by proud pioneers, including American legend, Johnny Appleseed, who believed in the beauty and honesty found in working the land for the benefit of all.
They were followed by rugged industrialists, who built the nation’s trust by giving life to the pump industry, new forms of transportation, power generation, robotics and innovations that changed our world.
The roads, highways, bike trails and rivers that connect our cities and villages give way to a culture of dynamic residents with humbly hidden talents and trades that transform tenacity into triumph. Here you will find space for people who want an abundant life.
We act upon the need for innovation, invention and reinterpretation. We are outspoken and achievement-driven, dedicated and hardworking, with a strong belief in the value of inner expression, quiet contemplation and the soul-inspiring replenishment of the great outdoors.
Today, we are all creators, sharing a collective vision, deeply rooted in the success of our past.
Generation after generation, forging imagination and prosperity.
We are building momentum, led by the dreamers of now.
We are a story in the making and yours to transform.
Come, make it in Mansfield. Welcome home.
OHIO NATIVE SARAH HORRIGAN-RAMOS has danced through life — literally. And for much of her adulthood, husband and Cuban-born talent Marden Ramos has been by her side. The pair met dancing and between them have graced hundreds of stages across the world, including in New York and Spain.
In 2008, the yearning to settle down inspired the pair to return to Ohio. The challenge was finding the perfect community; a friendly place with affordable space to raise a family, yet vibrant arts and culture, plus two jobs in dance. To their surprise, Richland County offered it all.
But it was Richland Academy of the Arts that sealed the deal. Both Sarah and Marden joined the academy to direct and build its widely respected dance programs, as well as help organize the annual All-Ohio Dance Festival. Great job opportunities made it possible for the duo and their two teenage kids to find the perfect rhythm for a life built around strong community, wide open spaces and the richness of the arts.
“Being so used to living in big cities, Marden and I couldn’t believe the incredible community we found here,” Horrigan-Ramos explains, “with its sophisticated arts scene and affordable homes with big yards and
space to raise our kids. We even found a Spanish immersion school that was just perfect for our kids.”
Sarah’s parents were also lured by the strong community, moving to Mansfield in their daughter’s steps to enjoy a rich life filled with new friends and volunteering, arts and social activities.
“It’s wonderful to live in the same city as my parents for the first time since our kids were born. It’s made even better by the fact that they have their own lives and love it here — maybe even more than we do,” Horrigan-Ramos laughs. But there have been less tangible surprises that sealed her love for Richland County, too.
“I continue to be so impressed by this community, its leadership and the many visionary and passionate champions who work behind the scenes,” she says.
“Right away, we felt a warm welcome and were invited to become involved.” The community, Horrigan-Ramos says, along with the region’s endless opportunities, have orchestrated a harmony that inspires residents and visitors alike.
Meet feathered friends and make a difference in their lives at this non-profit haven for birds.
THE OHIO BIRD SANCTUARY (OBS) has been caring for ill and injured birds for more than 35 years. Now, their renovated and expanded visitor center and brand-new Avian Encounters Area help them fly even higher in their two-fold mission: to care for feathered friends and educate the public while they do it.
Avian Encounters includes a private village of large, comfortable enclosures for the Sanctuary’s highly trained birds that travel with keepers to schools, libraries and events to show off their skills. The birds, which can’t be released back into the wild for a variety of reasons, now get peaceful indoor-outdoor enclosures where they can rest between visits. “These animals are getting a new lease on life: to be ambassadors of their species,” says Executive Director Julie Schwartz.
The Sanctuary also renovated and expanded their visitor center and on-site avian hospital, which sees about 500 to 600 feathered patients every year. Sick and injured birds are treated by the care team until they are deemed able to hunt for food naturally. In one recent success story, a hawk that had been hit by two different cars was nursed back to health over the course of two months. Once the hawk regained the ability to fly and received a clean bill of health, it was released back into the wild.
Birds that have a permanent home at the Sanctuary give the public a glimpse at the important work they do and the chance to get up close and personal with elusive species like owls and bald eagles. “Young people might not care for what they don’t understand,” says Schwartz. “Our hope is to be a place where young people and families can learn and enjoy spending time in nature.”

WHILE HE GREW UP IN A SMALL TOWN just 30 miles from Mansfield, Andrew Whapham’s path to the place he calls home took a decades-long detour to nearby Columbus, where he built a successful career in real estate and housing policy.
“Richland County was my early stomping ground,” Whapham says. “I have such fond memories of sports, camping, outdoor recreation, shopping and the cultural experiences that are still so much a part of this place.”
Two decades before settling in the area, Whapham was part of a team that converted downtown Mansfield’s historic Voegele building (pronounced “vaguely”) from commercial to residential use. The team carefully preserved its exquisite 1897 architecture that immerses visitors and locals in the city’s rich history — the property is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Whapham has personally witnessed Mansfield’s commitment to reinvention and growth. In 2020, he felt himself drawn to the palpable excitement of the revitalization unfolding. From there, he purchased the Voegele outright and transformed two of the 25 loft apartments into short-term rentals.
“I saw an opportunity to restore these properties, create vibrant living spaces and contribute to the revitalization of the local economy,” Whapham says. Travelers rave about staying at the Voegele, where they get to live like a local, typically leaving as sold on the city as he is.
Despite once being a sort of outsider, Whapham has warmly welcomed into an extraordinary community that offers city amenities, a strong entrepreneurial spirit and collaborative leadership — yet surrounded by serene natural landscapes.
“Richland County offers a unique blend of urban and rural living that feels like home,” Whapham explains.
“It’s a hub for business, innovation and culture. A where families flourish, entrepreneurs thrive and residents enjoy a high quality life.” He also points to the area’s historic buildings with untapped potential for development. The Voegele’s apartments join a wealth of affordable new and historic homes, farms, commercial buildings and wide-open spaces that await those who similarly feel right at home here. But the city’s finest asset, he says, is the warm and collaborative spirit of the people.

OVER 30 YEARS AGO, crews arrived at the Historic Ohio State Reformatory to film The Shawshank Redemption. Though not a box office hit, the movie has become IMDb’s top-rated movie of all time and put Mansfield on the map as a global destination. The movie also inspired The Shawshank Trail, a self-guided driving tour of iconic filming locations across Richland, Ashland and Wyandot counties.
The trail features 16 well-marked stops, including the Historic Ohio State Reformatory, the cabin from the movie’s opening scene, Brooks' bird-feeding bench and the mural at the grocery store where Brooks and Red worked. Step into the Shawshank Woodshop in Upper Sandusky to see the world’s largest public collection of props.
Guests can experience the trail at their own pace as they drive by car. Most stops on The Shawshank Trail are free, but the paid prison tour is well worth the admission price and is where most start their journey.

Nicole Scott Derr & Family
THERE’S SOMETHING SPECIAL about a community that keeps a family coming back for eight generations.
Sure, the younger generation may leave to see the world, as Nicole Scott Derr did after college, making a name for herself as a respected strategic business advisor in big cities. But she has always cherished memories of her grandparents’ farm just minutes from the Mansfield home where she grew up.
So, when her grandmother passed away in 2023, leaving her the family farm and all its acreage, Derr and her husband considered their options: keep the farm and live in the ancient farmhouse … or sell it all. And the choice became clear. She simply could not be the person who ended that legacy. She’d be the seventh generation of her family to live and work on the farm; her kids would be the eighth.
What the Derr family discovered in Mansfield was a community that offered the encouragement and support required to move a business and take over the 200-year-old farm. Be it recommending a contractor for farmhouse improvements or business contacts, everyone they’ve met has shared generously.
“I feel like we’ve always been making our way back here,” Derr says.
“We’ve found such an incredible group of people in Richland County. In a bigger city, you just can’t make the connections we’ve made so quickly here.”
Her husband and kids love it, too, enjoying area gardens, parks and open spaces, along with a wealth of arts, culture, events and activities.
Derr has been similarly embraced by Mansfield’s business community, appreciating how entrepreneurs are valued without the kind of competitive, keep-toyourself environment typical of other places. Shortly after moving, she met Mansfield Mayor Jodie Perry at a packed Women’s Leadership gathering, who wasted no time in suggesting the two meet for coffee to chat about Derr’s farm project and consulting business.
“The mayor!” Derr says, in disbelief. “That just wouldn’t happen anyplace else.” And much like her heirloom 1948 tractor on the verge of being restored, her new community has proven to be a reliable, well-oiled machine offering great jobs, affordable homes and a fertile environment for launching a business or a family.
“You can tell we’re on the cusp of something big here,” Derr says. “It’s so exciting to be a part of it.”
Trails offer endless inspiration for exploration! The Mansfield area’s trail bounty is a traveler’s candy store — an enticing mix of history, scenery, art and movie magic awaits.
