Some routes to the Hocking Hills are more rewarding than others. From Columbus and the John Glenn Columbus International Airport, take U.S. Route 33 to State Route 664. From Cleveland, follow I-71S to 37E. From Cincinnati, take State Route 32, also known as the James A. Rhodes Appalachian Highway.
THE WEATHER
In spring and fall, frequent rain fills the many waterfalls. Summer temperatures are comfortable with cooler temps found in caves and gorges, on shaded trails and in the evening. In winter, temperatures can dip below zero degrees.

SMALL FOOTPRINTS MAKE A big difference
By Alexia KemerlingWhen you think of the ancient sandstone cliffs, cascading waterfalls and historic hemlocks that make up the Hocking Hills region, “fragile” isn’t an adjective that likely comes to mind. Yet, the stunning landscape isn’t as sturdy as it seems — especially when you consider the millions of visitors treading the trails each year.
While our role as individuals may feel insignificant, we must remember we are part of a bigger picture. Every choice matters when it comes to protecting nature.
Unsure of what it means to visit responsibly? The Love Hocking Hills campaign is designed to help visitors interact thoughtfully with nature with 12 simple principles.
Rebecca Miller, an education specialist at Hocking Soil and Water Conservation, explains why people shouldn’t view this as just a cumbersome list of rules. “We aren’t trying to restrict anyone’s fun,” Miller says. “We’re just trying to protect a place that’s really unique.”
Read on for the 12 principles, then go to LoveHockingHills.com to take the pledge yourself!
1 3 4
Do Your Homework. Plan Ahead. Dress for the weather, pick appropriate trails and pay attention to the differences between state parks and nature preserves.
2
Stay on Trails. This is key for protecting ecosystems and keeping YOU safe — falling off a rock ledge isn’t a great way to end a hike.
Be Nice. Mother Nature is Watching. Share the trail, leash your pet, turn down your music volume. Even if you feel all alone in nature, be conscious of your actions.
Pick Up After Yourself and Your Pet.
Carry out what you carry in (including pet waste!). Take pride in taking care of the places you go.
5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12
Take Only Photographs, Leave Only Footprints. While it may be tempting to create a sculpture in nature with leaves or rocks, or carve your initials into a rock or tree, these small acts are incredibly harmful and disruptive to ecosystems and small creatures, like salamanders and spiders.
Leave Wildlife Alone. Trying to interact with wild animals is dangerous for you and for them! Admire from a distance.
Pick a Prepared Campsite. Not only does this make it easier on you, but it protects the longevity and beauty of the natural areas you came for.
Keep Your Campfire Small. Use a campfire ring, purchase firewood locally, check the local fire danger level before striking that match and always extinguish your fire before leaving it.
Trendy Isn’t Cool. Safety comes before social media. Avoid the urge to take extreme selfies or alter your surroundings. Hocking Hills is impressive and beautiful all by itself.
Support Local. Many chefs, bakers, artists and entrepreneurs call the Hocking Hills home and they’ll help you have an experience you won’t find anywhere else.
Volunteer While You’re Here. Make memories and leave your mark by becoming part of the community.
Spread the Word. Take the Love Hocking Hills pledge, use the hashtag #LoveHockingHills and help advocate for responsible hiking wherever you go!

LODGE
The
By Anietra HamperVisitors to the Hocking Hills in 2023 have a new lodge to experience and expand their visit beyond the already great family-friendly hiking trails and outdoor adventures. The original lodge was lost to a fire in 2016, so this debut is an exciting time for the community.
"Rustic charm, spectacular views and an exceptional experience await people at the brand-new Hocking Hill State Park Lodge,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “After years of planning and construction, we are excited to welcome people into this new facility nestled perfectly into one of our most popular state parks.”
The 74,000-sq.-ft. lodge and conference center has 81 guest rooms and event space for up to 230 people. The timber-framed structure is tucked into the region’s most picturesque forests and sandstone gorges, so you get an intimate experience in the Hocking Hills’ natural surroundings.
The floor-to-ceiling windows by the mezzanine sky bridge let you enjoy the breathtaking scenery any time of the day. Thoughtful details like the small nooks in the lodge corridors make the stay cozy and relaxing. Sit with a cup of coffee by one of the stone fireplaces in the lobby, take a swim in the indoor or outdoor pools, or just enjoy conversation with friends beneath the stars in one of the comfortable outdoor spaces.
Besides catering to overnight guests, the lodge is designed to be a gathering place for all visitors to the area. Anyone can come in to enjoy a bite to eat at the Rock House Restaurant and Pub or pick up a sandwich from the grab-and-go café to enjoy a picnic in the state park.
Reserve your overnight accommodations at the lodge or cabins by visiting hockinghillsparklodge.com or calling 1-800-AT-A-PARK (1-800-282-7275).
DRIVE TIME
By Kristen HampshireOn two wheels or four — and certainly by foot — the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway and Hocking canal trail offer a historically fascinating and naturally amazing way to explore Southeast Ohio.
Follow St. Rte. 374 on the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway, known as “the Gateway to Ohio’s Scenic Wonderland” and spanning more than 26 miles with access to trails, cottages and campgrounds. In 2021, the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration added the route to its America’s Byways collection based on its archaeological, cultural, historical, natural, recreational and scenic qualities. “America’s Byways are roads to the very heart and soul of America,” says Chris Sieverdes, president of the National Scenic Byway Foundation.
Some stops along the way include sights like Old Man’s Cave with its waterfalls, Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve with one of Ohio’s deepest gorges and the nearly 200-foot Black Hand sandstone cliffs, the dramatically stunning Rock House cave, Cedar Falls, Ash Cave, Cantwell Cliffs, Whispering Cave and the Hocking State Forest office, where you can drop in to learn more about the area. In fact, the byway passes all the major non-contiguous sites in Hocking Hills State Park and the Hocking National Forest.
Also plan time to explore the Hocking County Historical and Genealogical Society and Museum near downtown Logan, with its six-building campus that includes a one-room schoolhouse, the state’s oldest steam car, a carriage house set up with old-time tools, a covered wagon, a vast collection of military artifacts and an original telegraph office. “We are a best-kept secret — visitors come from all over and they love it,” says the society’s Nyla Vollmer, who is a walking history book and Hocking Hills enthusiast. Her husband Ken maintains the grounds at Lock 17, which the historical society owns. The historical society also maintains the popular Hocking canal trail.
Open from the 1840s until the last boat steered through the four-foot waters in the late 1880s carrying a load of coal, the Hocking Canal opened up Hocking Hills to trade and commerce. “You can hike along most of the trail and visit most of the locks,” Vollmer shares, noting how much of it has dried up and some is filled in and grown over. “A lot of it you can still see.” Vollmer herself spearheaded a video about the canal — the home she lives in was even transported down the waterway at one time.
The old canal path runs between U.S. Rte. 33 and the train tracks between Haydenville and Nelsonville. A self-guided tour of canal landmarks includes the Sheep Pen Lock, Old Town Culvert Park, Wright Lock Park and Johnny Appleseed Park.
Follow the BUTTERFLIES
Flutter along the brand-new butterfly trail through the Hills to learn about and wonder at these gorgeous insects.
By Jamie RheinA people-sized pair of outstretched monarch butterfly wings stand at one end of the Monarch Waystation at the Hocking Hills Regional Welcome Center. Deep purple ironweed, coneflowers and bright yellow cup plants are joined with milkweed, the monarch’s must-have host plant. This visitor photo op is the first stop on the Hocking Hills Butterfly Trail There are 13 others, each showcasing the region’s native flowers and butterfly bounty. In the winter, the gardens are worth a visit when they become havens for pupae and caterpillars.
Travel all 14 stops on the trail from Logan to Rockbridge for a lesson in pollinators, host plants and what caterpillars eat. “The education component of the Butterfly Trail highlights the native habitat that makes Hocking Hills, Hocking Hills,” says Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Andrea Jones. Many of the stops are little-known destination gems that also serve as butterfly magnets. Each has a different theme and a pair of giant butterfly wings that match a butterfly species found there. “We wanted to highlight different butterflies that can be seen at each location,” says Jones.
The Bowen House, a former private home and now an art center in Logan, is
host to the clouded sulphur, a delicate butterfly with a yellow hue. Rockbridge State Nature Preserve beckons the hackberry emperor and at Bishop Educational Gardens, the spicebush swallowtail, a black beauty with blue and white highlights, is a star. The expanse of prairie and fields at Capital University’s Primmer Outdoor Learning Center attracts the great spangled fritillary. Although there is a small fee to enter the main grounds of Butterfly Ridge, the trail’s last stop, the wings of the eastern comma, are accessible to everyone.
Jones and members of Logan in Bloom developed the trail as a unique way to encourage others to beautify their communities and explore the region. In 2022, Logan in Bloom was recognized for its efforts by being honored with America in Bloom’s Bee Happy award for best pollinator habitat. Plus, standing between the wings of a butterfly for a photo opportunity is a crowd pleaser.

By Jill Rossocking Hills is known for its deep gorges and breathtaking cliffs, but that doesn’t mean the area is off-limits to strollers and wheelchairs! These accessible destinations allow visitors of all abilities to enjoy the region’s beauty.
Ash Cave Gorge Trail is a paved, quarter-mile trail leading to the largest recess cave in the eastern U.S. with breathtaking views of a 90-ft. waterfall cascading over the cave’s horseshoeshaped rim. The lower Conkles Hollow Gorge trail, lined with abundant ferns tucked beneath sheer sandstone cliffs, is paved for about three-quarters of a mile.
Other wheel-friendly trails include the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway, a 20-mile course along the Hocking River from Athens to Nelsonville, and Old Town Creek Trail, a 1-mile scenic pathway in Logan.
After hiking, take a breather at the Hocking Hills State Park Visitor Center at Old Man's Cave, a sprawling lodge-style building featuring immersive displays of the history and ecology of the region — including a cave to explore! HANDS ON IN THE HILLS
By Chez ChesakWhen you need a change from the quiet and solitude of nature (or perhaps it’s just raining one day), there are all sorts of active and experiential attractions throughout the Hills.
If the weather does turn, we’ve got you covered with a variety of active indoor options. You can bury the hatchet at Hungry Buffalo’s Bury the Axe, which also serves a full menu (including kid’s meals) and cocktails, beer and wine. If you’re feeling more cerebral, take on the persona of a crime syndicate safecracker and workout your powers of deduction in the ‘The Great Heist’ scenario at Hocking Hills Escape Games. Or you can get in touch with your olfactory side at the Hocking Hills Candle Works and make scents of it all, handcrafting your own candle.
Still wanting to be outside but perhaps just looking for something a little more interactive and social? Putter around the landscaped gardens of Adventure Golf at Rempel’s Grove, which is located near a petting zoo, ice cream and candy shop, canoe livery, bookshop and restaurants. Meanwhile Hocking Hills Mini Golf is professionally designed, wheelchair friendly and located next to the shops at Hocking Hills Market. The market offers antiques, crafts, furniture and a seasonal flea market.

If the kids (or adults) need some new stimulus, the Hocking Hills Gem Mine and Gold Rush will keep them engaged and focused as they pan for gems on a 75-foot-long sluice. Located in a KOA, they also have a rock shop filled with gemstone items like jewelry, geodes, gem trees and home decor. The 21-acre Butterfly Ridge Butterfly Conservation Center is dedicated to — you guessed it — preserving butterflies and their habitat. It includes hiking trails, a nature center and a tree house. Feeling cuddly?
Muddy Boots Farm and Fox’s High Rock Farm allow you to interact with rabbits, camels, goats, donkeys, pigs and more. Fox’s also offers kid’s gem mining and wagon rides.

Leave No Trace
The 7 Principles
1. Plan ahead and prepare. Check the weather forecast and research the supplies you’ll need. Familiarize yourself with the land and be prepared to leave no trace of your visit.
2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces. Stay on the trail — this is for your protection and nature’s.
3. Dispose of waste properly. Would you leave your garbage on a friend’s yard? Of course not, so don’t litter in your old friend nature’s yard.
4. Leave what you find. Would you help yourself to your friend’s possessions? Of course not, so leave the stones, trees, plants and artifacts there for the next visitor to appreciate. Don’t carve your initials into trees or stack stones, instead preserve the memory with a picture.
5. Minimize campfire impacts. There’s no need for bonfires; keep it small and easily manageable. Buy your wood where you burn it or consider using a small camp stove.
6. Respect wildlife. Let’s face it, no one wants to be the guy in the viral video getting chased by a bear. Leave wildlife alone.
7. Be considerate of other visitors. You may love falling asleep to Van Halen blasting from your iPhone, but families and solo travelers may not. Behave as you would in any sacred space and be kind to others enjoying the outdoors.

TOP 10
REASONS TO STAY ON THE TRAILS
1. Getting lost in the woods will make you late for your spa appointment.
2. You can’t go in the hot tub with a cast on your leg.
3. There are better ways to see the Hocking Hills from the air than by Medevac.
4. We can’t guarantee the ranger that rescues you will be a hottie.
5. Get up close and personal with animals at the Columbus Zoo, not because your foot is wedged in rocks and you can’t move.
6. If you fall to the bottom of a ravine, there’s a good chance critters will relieve themselves on you.
7. You can’t zipline with your arm in a sling.
8. The Hocking Valley Community Hospital is lovely but the rooms do not come with hot tubs.
9. If your new bride “disappears” from the trail, there’s a good chance you’ll be the lead story on the evening news — and not in a good way.
10. You’ll really tick off our park rangers.
All joking aside, your safety is just one of many reasons to stay on the constructed trails.
