Fall means changing leaves, PSLs and spooky season, but in Columbus, it also means it’s time for The Ohio State Buckeyes football. Tailgating on game day or cheering on the 2024 National Champions at a bar or restaurant near campus is a time-honored tradition and must be experienced at least once.

There’s plenty of athletic action happening in the Arena District this time of year, too. Catch the Columbus Crew, the 2023 Major League Soccer champions at Lower.com Field in the Arena District, or snag tickets to cheer on the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey team at Nationwide Arena. Be ready for the cannon to fire every time they score.

What are some of your favorite local spots to eat?

In terms of Chinese, I’ve been going to Pacific Eatery. I go with all my friends and get all the things. They have quite a lot of styles of Chinese food, but they’re known for the Dongbei style, which is from the northeast region. You can use a QR code to get the Chinese menu. The sweet and sour pork is really good. There’s a food truck on Morse and Cleveland, Xochimilco, that is very, very good. I passed by it a thousand times before Miguel {the chef at Joya’s} introduced me to it. They have a specials board, and whatever’s on there is good.

What are some of your other favorite hangouts?

I like the Columbus Metropolitan Library — I go there a lot. They have so many books and it’s very well organized and everybody’s so friendly. I also like going to Blacklick Woods Metro Park I enjoy the canopy walk. I love being outside when I can.

PAGE TURNER

A lifelong Columbus resident, Hanif Abdurraqib’s work is inspired by his love for his hometown. He’s the author of multiple books and poetry collections, with There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension recognized by The New York Times as one of the most notable books of 2024. Abdurraqib’s talents are recognized nationally. He was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2021, the Windham Campbell Prize for 2024 Nonfiction and the 2024 Voice of the Heartland Award.

What inspires you and your writing?

So much of my writing centers on place and the ever-changing nature of this area that I’m from and I love. It works as a tool of archiving. I’m building a series of memories that people can reach back and hold onto.

Are there any spots in Columbus that inspire you currently or in your past?

I grew up going to The King Arts Complex. I could go there to make art, or I could watch art be made. More importantly, I got to bear witness to a lot of Black artist legends, like Tony West.

Hanif Abdurraqib

What are your favorite spots in the city?

I love Upper Cup Coffee where I live. I walk in there and everyone I want to see is in there. I have Columbus Crew season tickets every year, even when I can’t go to the games.

What’s next for you?

A poetry collection will be out in 2026. Next year, I’m on the road less, so I can really buckle down and work on it. I write really well at home, specifically in the spring in Columbus.

MUSICMAKERS

Spencer Sutherland

Although American Indie pop singersongwriter Spencer Sutherland is in the midst of a 43-stop world tour of The Drama, a modern rock opera based on his life, his love for his hometown of Central Ohio never wanes.

“Pickerington is the place where I fell in love with music,” Sutherland says. “It’s the quintessential storybook place to grow up. My friends and I would go see our high school’s football games on Friday nights and spend our free time riding bikes and playing basketball and baseball in the park.”

How did Central Ohio prepare you for your career?

I went to Pickerington North High School, and we had an amazing show choir and awesome theater program that was known across the country. I was very lucky to be a student there and have the encouragement and support of my parents to pursue my dream.

What are your favorite Ohio places?

Although I live in Los Angeles now, I return home as often as I can. I love seeing shows at Newport Music Hall. There’s nothing like a great cup of coffee. My favorites are Stauf’s Coffee Roasters in German Village for cold brew and New Standard Coffee Roastery in Columbus, which makes an Ethiopian blend that I love. Everything on the menu is an option for me at Fox in the Snow Cafe

JENI’S SPLENDID ICE CREAMS

Find out why photographer Smit Patel chose to say “yes” to living in Columbus.

Hiking the Walnut Woods’ Tall Pines Area trail when it snows.

Walking the Scioto Mile any time of the year.

Grabbing dinner in German Village restaurants like Lindey’s.

PATEL’S TOP 5 PLACES TO GO IN COLUMBUS 4 2 5 3

An early morning walk at Prairie Oaks Metro Park in fall.

Watching sunsets at Bridge Park or Alum Creek Reservoir. 1

With his camera in hand, Smit Patel captures the people and life in Columbus through photos and videos. Follow @smitdcreator to see his work, like this gorgeous fall image of the city skyline and the National Veterans Memorial and Museum.

It was the fast-paced city life that grabbed Patel’s interest and inspired him to move to Columbus and open his studio Shutterverse. Traveling with his family from their home in India, he made a pitstop in Florida and Virginia before settling down in Columbus.

Why Columbus? The city’s ability to nurture entrepreneurship attracted him. “I thought Columbus offered the opportunity to grow a small business like mine,” he says. “I slowly got into photography until I realized that Columbus would be a great spot to start a photography and videography business due to the diversity of opportunities available.”
