How’d Dublin get its name?

Unsurprisingly, Dublin’s name has roots with its Irish counterpart! It was named in 1810 by John Shields, a surveyor of the land who happened to be Irish. The area’s beauty reminded him of his birthplace of Dublin, Ireland, and the city has carried the name ever since.

DANCING HARES, DUBLIN MARKET: CITY OF DUBLIN XXXX
The Dancing Hares
As you explore the area, you’ll find artistic inspiration surrounding you. Public artworks abound in the city. Some are more straightforward — like Daily Chores, a sculpture representing Dublin’s historic town water pump from the early 1900s. Others will keep you thinking well after you’ve gone home. Going, Going … Gone! represents the passage of time through baseball imagery, beckoning you to walk through a doorway and into the woods to reflect on memories of the past. And some evoke a keen sense of whimsy; The Dancing Hares, who keep watch over Ballantrae Community Park, joyfully dance near the splash pad.

Artsy Vibes
Market Vibes
The buzz of activity, the chatter of vendors showcasing their handcrafted wares, the smell of fresh baked bread and the burst of flavor from the first bite of freshly picked local produce … a feast for your senses is waiting for you at the Dublin Market. Bridge Park bustles with local craftsmen, bakers, farmers and vendors every Saturday, 9 a.m. – noon from May through September. Among the local goods are candles and bath products from Vellabox, popsicles from Rime Time, succulents and houseplants from Rockin’ Botanicals and even something for your four-legged friend from vendors like Cheerful Hound. Vendors rotate throughout the season, so check the interactive map before your visit.

Whether you’re exploring your own town, from the next town over or from states (or even countries) away, sometimes the best way to absorb the beauty of a location is to explore like a tourist. Hit that tourist vibe in Dublin by starting your visit walking along the Dublin Link. This structural marvel is the longest-span, single tower S-shaped suspension pedestrian bridge in the world and has scenic views to boot. Peer over the edge to see great blue herons wading along the shores of the Scioto River or visit in early morning to watch the harmony of Dublin’s two neighborhoods as they begin to glow at sunrise. At the center of the Dublin Link, you stand on the connection between history and progress. Walk to the Historic Dublin side to absorb the rich stories paved into the bricks of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Or, turn to the east to find yourself in Bridge Park, where you can fill your day visiting shops, restaurants, attractions and the sparkling new Riverside Crossing Park.

Imagine it: the gentle music of water lapping the shore, the soft glow of light lining your kayak, the picturesque views of the Scioto River stretching out before you as you paddle around downtown Dublin … it’s a dreamy evening within reach. Paddling sessions include an hour on the water as the sun goes down and all the equipment you need for a peaceful paddling excursion.

Food is the essence of life — so the better your food, the better your life. When you wander through North Market Bridge Park, the scents wafting toward you from the local vendors are from some of the tastiest dishes life can offer. Quench your thirst with a cold-pressed juice, smoothie or — you guessed it — bubble tea from Bubbles Tea & Juice Company, where the best ingredients create the most flavorful drinks. As you sip, find your way to Hoyo’s Kitchen, where you can build a bowl full of East African flavors; the Somali dishes are crafted from beloved family recipes. If Oaxacan-style dishes like street tacos, enchiladas and burritos are calling your name, queue up at Dos Hermanos — a local favorite that quickly grew from its humble beginnings as a food truck. After your meal, the heavenly smell of delectable desserts will pull you to Bake Me Happy, where zebra cakes, donut muffins and more will sate your sweet tooth. Better yet — it’s all gluten free!

North Market Bridge Park
First Time Visitors
Bridge Park is a great place to start with its vibrant shops and restaurants. The area offers much more with year-round events, bustling nightlife, parks and entertainment. After, step from the new into the historic by crossing the Dublin Link Bridge into Historic Dublin. The Dublin Link has to be seen to be believed — it’s billed as the longest span, single tower S-shaped suspension bridge in the world.
20 2024 DUBLIN DESTINATION GUIDE
Historic Dublin dates back to 1810, as the beautiful 19th-century architecture and brick sidewalks will attest. Be sure to check out the public library as well as the local shops and restaurants. Speaking of, don’t miss the gorgeous Parisian bakery, Paris 75, for macarons and unique French products like tea from Marie Antoinette’s gardens. If it’s Italian you’re craving, try Mezzo, where you can enjoy your pizza or pasta in the dining room or on one of three patios. If you go on a Wednesday, there’s often live music, too. You’ll find the influence of Dublin, Ireland, at the Dublin Village Tavern, a nationally known Irish pub that features an Irish Kettle Dinner, Irish Egg Rolls and, of course, Irish whiskey and beers on tap.

Never been to Dublin? You’re in for a treat. Here are a few not-to-be-missed stops for what’s sure to be only the first of many visits.
Indian Run Falls
Outdoors Fanatics
Dublin is an ideal destination to explore the great outdoors. Bikers can pedal along 150-plus miles of paths, weaving riders through Metro Parks, around famous artwork and into the city’s mustsee destinations. Be sure to see Dublin’s scenic waterfalls. Take in the sights of Hayden Run Falls as you stroll across its elevated boardwalk or hike to Indian Run Falls, just minutes from Historic Dublin. Get off the ground at ZipZone, where you can take a guided, two-hour Canopy Tour or explore the trees on your own in the five-trail Adventure Park. Or, get out on the water and paddle down the Scioto River. Reserve yourself a kayak from Sunrise Kayaking and glide beneath the Dublin Link Bridge. Speaking of links, hit the links at one of nearly a dozen area public courses, including the Ireland-inspired, picturesque Golf Club of Dublin that contains 1,800 feet of hand-stacked rock walls. Looking for something for beginners? SportsOhio offers a nine-hole golf course and a driving range to practice your swing. If you need some gear (or you’re in the mood to browse), Phoenix Bats makes wood bats for every level of softball and baseball, including vintage bats, trophy and award bats and very cool tees and gear. Dublin Irish Festival
They don’t call it Dublin for nothing. According to legend, the town (then village) was named back in 1810 by an Irishman who was reminded of his hometown when he saw the sun on the hills. The annual three-day Dublin Irish Festival takes place on 38 acres and features performers from Ireland and the U.S. Irish (on seven stages!), plenty of food and drink, lots of hands-on activities, Irish dancing and even a full 10th-century Irish village. At the Irish Festival, find gifts of all sorts — from clothing and accessories to kitchen items and art — many handmade or imported from Ireland and offered at the Emerald Isle and Marketplace. Make a wish on the Wishing Tree, where you can write a wish on a bright piece of paper and tie it to one of the branches. By the end of the festival, the tree is a beautiful, hopeful work of art.
22 2024 DUBLIN DESTINATION GUIDE
During the rest of the year, while you’re waiting for the next Irish Festival, visit Fado Pub & Kitchen to enjoy European-inspired dishes and décor imported from the Emerald Isle. Following the Celtic Cocktail Trail is a great way to make sure you’re not missing out on many of the Irish libations in Dublin. The Artistically Inclined
Artists and creative types will find a lot to do in Dublin. Use clues or GPS to find the 16 Riverboxes stashed around town — each container is created by an artist, and, while no two are alike, they all contain a logbook, unique stamp and a journal. Print off the Riverboxes passport and fill it with stamps to earn a limited edition geocoin.
Swing by Mitchell’s Berries & Blooms from March to May and pick flowers to design your own bouquet. Check their website for art classes and events, too. Find inspiration at one of Dublin’s art galleries, including the Dublin Arts Council Gallery, Jacob Stout Gallery and Terra Gallery & Creative Studio.
Dublin is known for its iconic outdoor art thanks to the Dublin Art in Public Places Program. Don’t miss Field of Corn (with Osage Oranges), a Stonehengelike grouping of giant cobs of corn, and Leatherlips, a 12-foot-high bust of the famed Wyandot leader. Take in every angle of Watch House, which combines an enormous copper sphere with a model of a house to give an artistic nod to a planetarium and a Native American mound. The newest addition to Dublin’s outdoor art scene is The Boat in the Field — a 25-foot-tall stone skeletal sculpture of a boat, located near the pond at the M.L. “Red” Trabue Nature Reserve. For more new art on the scene, visit Bridge Park to see In the Neighborhood, a mosaic column that consists of 3,444 pieces of hand-cut ceramic tile.

For an upscale environment and hand-crafted Italian fare, head to Z Cucina, or peruse a menu of irresistible eats ranging from seafood to sandwiches at Kitchen Social. Can’t decide what you’re in the mood for? North Market features over a dozen local merchants specializing in international cuisine. Wherever you dine, top off your meal with a piece of homemade fudge from the long-standing dessert shop, Kilwins. The fun doesn’t end after dinner; Bridge Park also boasts several unique nightlife options, such as 16-Bit Bar + Arcade, an establishment that combines classic arcade games with specialty cocktails, and The Roosevelt Room, a late-night lounge inspired by the 20th-century president Teddy Roosevelt. If you’re looking for a place to flex your creative muscles, Terra Gallery & Creative Studio hosts art classes and events for both the aspiring tot and the seasoned artist.

Just steps away from Bridge Park, Historic Dublin abounds with old charm. Share a bottle of wine over a charcuterie board featuring artisanal cheeses in Coast Wine House’s comfortable space or choose between dozens of menu items at Tucci’s — and don’t forget to pair your entrée with a selection from the restaurant’s extensive wine menu. Fans of classic Italian fare will want to pair pasta with a cocktail at Mezzo, and hometown camaraderie can be found at the beloved neighborhood bar, Missing Jimmy’s. Still craving a tasty treat? Get a scoop of Brown Butter Almond Brittle or Darkest Chocolate at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams that are just as splendid as the name says. For breathtaking views of the area, finish your trip by climbing the 25-foot observation tower. Indian Run Falls
Low on time? Indian Run Falls offers a scenic trail with waterfall views that’s only 0.5 miles long. Although this park might be small, it’s big in fun. Stop for a picnic at one of the shelters, find a viewing deck for beautiful views and look for wildlife as you go.
Emerald Fields
There is fun for everyone at Emerald Fields. Gather up friends and try your hand at baseball on one of the diamonds or play a game of cricket. Trying to keep little ones entertained? Visit the accessible playground to swing, slide and play. Keep an eye out for the new Emerald Fields bike pump track — instead of pedaling to ride your bike, you’ll be able to zip around the track by pumping up and down.

Thaddeus Kosciuszko Park
You’ll always find something new when you walk this park’s 0.9-mile loop trail — including a succulent garden, fishing ponds and a gazebo. In addition to great hiking, you’ll also find unique sculptures, like Feather Point by Ohio-based artist, Olga Ziemska. The sculpture stands 20 feet tall and was inspired by the trees that surround it.
M.L. “Red” Trabue Nature Reserve
Not only does this nature reserve offer paved trails for bikers, joggers and walkers, but it also features a boardwalk where you’ll be treated to scenic views. Bring your fishing pole to fish in Karrer Pond or binoculars to observe the multitude of birds in the area. As you wander, look out for the 1865 Fleming Cabin, along with salamanders, frogs and other wildlife who call the nature reserve home.

The chef’s special rolls are sure to impress at Song Lan, an upscale Bridge Park sushi restaurant — the Riverside Roll, which features 24-karat gold alongside tuna, salmon, yellowtail, spicy crab meat, avocado and tobiko, is just one standout. Mouthwatering Irish fare isn’t hard to find in Dublin.
