UPFRONT Q&A WITH THE MAYOR

Preservation with Purpose

BY JILL SELL

Mayor Jensen talks about the city’s mix of business development and maintaining park lands.

Bryan Jensen has been mayor of The City of Avon since 2014. A challenge for Jensen — and residents — has been embracing some residential and commercial development while preserving green areas. Q: How has Avon been able to maintain that balance? A: People want to slow down growth, but we can’t always do that. But the trade-off is that we can give residents the opportunity to gain more parkland so they can spend more time there with their families.

4 AVON Magazine

important for this couple to preserve the land and we were the perfect fit. Q: What development can residents look forward to soon? A: Dick’s Sporting Goods and Cooper’s Hawk Winery with its upscale restaurant will be constructed along Chester Road. Also, the headquarters of Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems recently moved here. That means that now local engineering students can find jobs in Avon

and not have to go far after graduation. We also have a robust medical community with University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic, Mercy Health and smaller medical entities that are thriving. Q: How do you want others to view Avon? A: Our legacy will be how we preserve things. I know other communities are focused on development. But we focus on both. That can be a win-win situation.

KEN BLAZE

Q: What’s the latest parkland progress? A: The 35-acre, city-owned Traxler Family Arboretum was once a tree farm with many different tree species on Stoney Ridge Road. It’s a hidden gem, like walking into a Metro Park. It’s very picturesque with a bridge that should be open and safe to walk across in the spring of 2024. Lorain County Metro Park owns 49 heavily wooded acres that once belonged to the Lustri Family of Avon. The city bought five additional acres adjacent to that property that we are donating to the county, which is developing walking paths. The City also recently signed an agreement with the Mikulic family of Avon which wishes to preserve 34 acres of land and see it not be developed. We have two years to purchase the property if we get grant money. Hopefully, the property will transfer by the middle of next year. It was

opportunity because we already had the space and the parking. We decided to do it and split the cost right down the middle,” says Hodge. Any time the school enters a partnership with the city and the rec department, the agreement stands that the schools always get first priority. This will be important in the spring when the new high school pickleball club starts. But Hodge doesn’t think the club will be just a club for long. “I bet we are just a few years away from it becoming an OHSAA sport,” he adds. But when the courts aren’t being used for school-related events and activities, it’s still just as busy with community members enjoying the complex. According to Hodge, it’s safe to say that now just about everyone in Avon has heard of pickleball, “I tell people, it’s the busiest place in Avon right now.” — Lara Busold

t started with the need to resurface the high school tennis courts. The project was about a year overdue. And due to the growth of the successful boys and girls tennis teams, the school district knew it was time to increase the number of courts as well. “When we started to look at the cost of doubling the tennis courts to adjust to the growth of the program, our athletic director, Erich Frombach, said, ‘If you are going to do this, you have to do pickleball.’ At the time, I didn’t even know what that was,” Avon Superintendent Ben Hodge admits. So they started doing some research. Then Hodge brought it up to the mayor at a routine meeting while discussing potential collaborations that could benefit the community as a whole. They both decided that it just made sense. “We don’t have public tennis courts or pickleball courts anywhere in the community. So we knew this was a good

o one likes paying taxes. However, without them, communities wouldn’t enjoy freshly plowed streets in the morning after an evening snowfall, the security of a quickly responding ambulance, thriving schools for its residents or trucks driving through the streets on summer evenings to spray for mosquitoes after heavy rainfall. As the only source of revenue other than state funding, a significant portion of the city’s property tax dollars fund the operations of the Avon Local School District. Almost 20% supports Lorain County services such as the sheriff’s department and the county court system.

According to the finance director for the City of Avon, Steve Presley, “As a municipality, we get roughly 12% of the property tax dollars charged to the residents of Avon. The additional funding that helps support the city is the municipal income tax — the 1.75% that is withheld from all those working within the community. If you live in Avon but work in a community that doesn’t have an income tax of at least 1.75%, we would collect the difference. Those are our two funding sources that pay for just about every service the city offers such as police, fire, leaf pick up, stormwater management and city hall. Basically, everything that people come to expect as far as the operations of their city.” — LB

In response, the district continues to expand and advance in the following areas:

1 Performing Arts Center The district utilizes the new, 1600-seat facility to the max, renting it out to other organizations to generate extra revenue when it’s not being used for school functions. Hodge is pleased to share, “If you were to walk into our Performing Arts Center on any given day starting with November 15 all the way through winter break, you will see a concert by one of our grade levels or one of our performing arts groups.”

2 Additional Entrance This spring, plans are in place to create

another entrance to the high school from Detroit Road, where the Our Lady of the Wayside building currently stands to improve morning and afternoon traffic flow.

3 Esports competition room “We went from 20 kids participating in e-sports three years ago to 75 this past spring,” Hodge says of this increasingly popular extracurricular. So they turned one of the high school computer labs into a sixseat competition room and aim to double its capacity this year.

ammers, nails, saws…permanent markers? Usually, the first three items are tools needed to build the framing for a wooden house. But when more than 200 Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems employees helped construct two Habitat for Humanity houses the summer of 2023, they also used markers. The employees wrote messages and well-wishes on the beams and walls of two houses to be shared with recipient families in Wayne and Champion counties. Even though most of the messages would be covered in the final construction, the families were able to read them first. The frames were constructed onsite in the parking lot of Bendix’s headquarters in Avon and then transported to their destinations. In addition, Bendix purchased $10,000 in wood for the construction and contributed $1,700 for other expenses. “Habitat for Humanity is our most popular volunteer event,” says Maria Gutierrez, director, ESG (environmental, social, governance) for Bendix. “We also always try to bring in the future homeowners. As a volunteer, you don’t always get to see or know who you are helping. But this way it makes it all so more relevant, knowing you have changed someone’s life.” Bendix employees have built 15 homes over the years, totaling more than 7,000 volunteer hours by 1,730 employees.

The most recent Habitat for Humanity houses were built for families outside of Avon. But the company’s local community and local school support has also been exemplary. The company takes its “good corporate neighbor” responsibility seriously. Incorporated in 1937, Bendix was acquired in 2002 by Knorr-Bremse, a German manufacturer of braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles. Today Bendix designs, develops and supplies components for medium- and heavy-duty trucks, buses, tractors and trailers in North America. Formerly headquartered in Elyria, Bendix moved to Avon in 2021. The Avon location has 725 employees, out of a total 4,400 across the United States, Canada and Mexico. “Bendix has been a long-time occupant and participant in Lorain County,” says Barbara Gould, the company’s director, corporate communications. “That was one of the reasons we chose to stay in the county, even after looking at other possible headquarter locations out of state. Lorain County is our home, and we wish for it to be our home for a long time. And we love our new building here.” Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems is located on 58 acres, 70% which is accessible open space. The property includes four ponds and a wooded walking path. Its 216,000-square-foot main building features space for research, development, administration and marketing.

A COMMITMENT TO SCHOOLS

“ Eagle Run is huge for us because the money raised goes to the endowment fund and our teachers are grant recipients.”

– Ben Hodge, Avon Local Schools Superintendent

12 AVON Magazine

The timing couldn’t have been better for Bendix when it moved into a new community and was hoping to discover a way to establish its reputation. With residents fiercely proud of their exceptional school district known for both its academics and high school athletics, the answer was right in front of the company. Until recently, things were a little cramped at Avon High School’s athletic facility. Avon’s rapid growth, coupled with the increased number of students using the old locker room, created a tight situation for staff, coaches student athletes and visiting teams. As many as 40,000 spectators and 5,000 student athletes use the school’s stadium each year. Help was needed. Bendix answered. The company awarded a $25,000 grant to the Avon Athletic Boosters’ Project SOAR. The aid helped with the cost of the renovation and construction of a modernized athletic facility near the high school stadium. The company’s financial support earned it the naming rights for the new coaches’ room. Completed in 2022, the one-story, 4,400-square-foot facility also consists of expanded locker rooms, new restrooms, a training room, enhanced AV capabilities, upgraded HVAC systems, a common room and more. “Sports are important for the development of kids, not just for health and wellness reasons, but for all that goes into

organized sports. These student athletes learn leadership, discipline, teamwork and other values that will help them in later life,” says Gutierrez, who says her company was pleased to partner with Avon’s business community, schools, families and individuals on such an important improvement. Ben Hodge, Avon Local Schools superintendent, is grateful the broken sink in the old athletic facility is long gone. But he also considers Bendix’s sponsorship of the community’s Eagle Run event to be vital to his district. Bendix was the exclusive sponsor of the 2023 Eagle Run, a major fundraising event for the Avon Schools Educational Endowment Fund and other local charities. The company will also be the presenting sponsor in 2024 and 2025. The all-ages event features a 5-mile run, 5K run/walk and a 1-mile kids’ fun run. The race attracts more than 1,000 participants, half of those Avon school children. “Eagle Run is huge for us because the money raised goes to the endowment fund and our teachers are grant recipients. They are able to offer students programs and education outside the regular classroom, everyday things that district money supports,” says Hodge. “Teachers have added Young Authors Programs, brought in Shakespeare experts and held science fairs for third, fourth and fifth graders.”

ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT Eagle Run and the athletic facility are probably the most visible community/ school contributions Bendix has made to Avon. But the company has made additional, incredibly good-corporate-neighbor connections within just the short time it has been in the city. And it does so with a plan and purpose. “We want to give back to a community and not just in monetary ways,” says Gutierrez. “First, we look at the needs of each community, and each community has different ones. Then we survey our employees to understand where their passions and skills are. And finally, we want to make sure

the causes we support align with our values and with the company’s overall.” For those reasons, Bendix, an engineering company, was a natural promoter of STEM-based (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning in schools. “I firmly believe education is the key to growth of people in communities and nations,” says Gutierrez. “And I feel we can really help in that area.” Hodge acknowledges Bendix’s efforts to expose his students to a wide variety of career paths by providing tours of the company’s facilities and promoting the

idea that STEM can help different kinds of future employees. “We have a high percentage of students who go on to a four-year college,” says Hodge. “But with the cost of college, more students are looking into the trades, where you can make a good living these days. Bendix brings in different groups of kids to their facility for engineering, mechanics, finance and other areas. In Avon, we are trying to provide work pathways for all these kids.”

BENDIX SUPPORT BEYOND THE COMMUNITY Additional Bendix support can be seen locally, regionally and nationally in these activities: VEX Robotics Bendix supports the VEX Robotics after-school program at the elementary, middle school and high school levels with event judging and grants. “It’s year-long program and the kids have to keep journals about what works and doesn’t work with their projects,” says Gutierrez. “Our employees always come back very impressed with the level of skills the kids have. And those skills are very transferable to work. They learn to design, plan, modify. Those skills are important ones for future employees.”

Science for Success Bendix partners with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in presenting the Science of Success Teen Internship. High school students gain exposure to a variety of career opportunities at the museum and in related STEM opportunities.

Center for Arts-Inspired Learning “Sometimes we think engineering is the only way to go. But the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning is a pathway for students who want to develop a career in filmmaking, design, dance, drawing or painting,” says Gutierrez, noting Bendix’s expanded support for these creative endeavors.

Ohio Invention Convention “Our employees help with the judging at the Ohio Invention Convention, which promotes entrepreneurship in kids who come up and present new products,” says Gutierrez. The STEAM-aligned statewide program (similar to STEM, but also including the arts) focuses on problem solving and solutions.

Education Service Center of Lorain County

Global Support Bendix also has the backing of Knorr-Bremse Global Care North America, the philanthropic organization of its parent company that has awarded $2.62 million for 32 projects since 2018. The support is earmarked for the surrounding communities of Knorr-Bremse’s three largest North American companies, including Bendix in Avon. Grants support education, (including STEM instruction and vocational training), health and wellness, and social cohesion. 14 AVON Magazine

“We also help our employees help other organizations,” says Gould. “Any nonprofit can apply to Bendix for a small grant of $250 each year, which might include helping a Little League team or buying new school band uniforms. Also, if you are an employee actively involved in a nonprofit, you can apply every year for a larger grant of $3,500.” Dollars for Doers is an employee incentive program that began in 2021. It rewards employees who volunteer with nonprofit organizations of their choice. Employees can earn $50 in incentives for every eight volunteer hours. Up to a maximum $500 per employee per year. In addition, corporate foundation grants can begin at $60,000. “We also do things like food drives, backto-school supply drives and support the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree. We never have difficulty getting volunteers,” says Gutierrez. “We track volunteer hours and employee engagement. We know 46% of employees are engaged in some form of volunteer work.” In 2022, Bendix and its employees donated almost 9,000 volunteer hours to a variety of causes, far exceeding its goal of 8,000 hours. Also, more than $1 million in grants and donations was awarded to community initiatives.

COURTESY BENDIX COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SYSTEMS LLC

Bendix realizes that educators are huge influencers in the lives and future of our youth. That acknowledgement has led to the company hosting 30 educators and administrators from all regional school districts at a grantfunded summer internship. The goal of the program, in conjunction with the Education Service Center of Lorain County, is to raise awareness of how STEM-based education can be incorporated into curriculums and lesson plans. The initiative supports both students who wish to follow a professional STEM career and those who want to make manufacturing their life’s work.

he wonderfully expanded and renovated Avon Branch Library officially opened in January 2023. But a year later the awe and appreciation for the amazing building and the additional programing hasn’t worn off. If anything, as both more longtime and new patrons discover the library’s incredible amenities, the reputation of this Lorain Public Library System branch soars. “People go out of their way to tell us that it is their first time in the new library. We offer them a tour of the building,” says

Donna Kelly-Sprinkle, manager of the Avon Branch Library since 2011. “They especially love the Create Space and just can’t believe it. They are very happy we can offer things we couldn’t offer before.” Create Space, for example, is a hotbed of innovation. Machines and other equipment allow patrons 13 and over (an adult must accompany users 13 to 17) to design and produce projects that feature laser engraving and cutting, embroidery, heat press, sewing, 3D printing/scanning, desktop milling, banner printing/vinyl work and more.

“They especially love the Create Space and just can’t believe it. They are very happy we can offer things we couldn’t offer before.” KELLY-SPRINKLE

Patrons are usually required to view a tutorial before using any of the equipment in Create Space. The results? Personalized and customized greeting cards, posters, campaign buttons, printed t-shirts, clothing, keychains, school, business and hobby projects. Going from 10,500 square feet to 26,500 square feet made it possible for the library to open Create Space, as well as offer other incredible opportunities. “The library was just too small for too long,” says Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen.

“With the growth of our community, this has been both a needed and welcome addition for our residents.” “Avon has sprung up incredibly over the years with commerce, its school systems, roadways and other improvements,” agrees Craig Koehler, president of the revitalized Friends of the Avon Library group, which now has about 40 members and is looking for more. “The library is now a facility that matches the growth of the city.” The Avon Branch Library opened in 1956 in the Old Town Hall building. Prior to that a bookmobile was dispatched by the Lorain Public Library System. The library moved several times during its history, including to its Harvest Drive location

in 1994. The community passed a building operating levy in 2020, with groundbreaking in August 2021 and making the current $9 million library transformation possible. NEW AND IMPROVED! The Norton Family Foundation Demonstration Kitchen is another new, wildly popular space at the library. The “ultimate goal” of the offering is “culinary literacy,” according to Kelly-Sprinkle. “We do regular programing related to cooking that helps people learn a life skill that maybe they didn’t have the opportunity to learn,” says Kelly-Sprinkle. “So, we teach things like Roasting 101 or Braising 101. “It’s an enrichment thing, but we also do fun, specific things. We had a chef come in with a program about recipes and meals

families can do together. We also had a program all about recipes that included lemons as a major ingredient, including pound cake. Another program was just for kids to help them learn basic skills around the kitchen, like how to use a mixer or food processer.” The library’s professional cooking demonstration station is equipped with cameras overhead so the audience can see what a chef is doing in real time on a large screen. Additional amenities include an expanded Business Center for adults with 10 public computers, photocopier, free scanning and outbound faxing. Kelly-Sprinkle says the business support is now all in one place “so people don’t have to go running across the building to get different things done.” The center is also in view of the main librarians’ desk so patrons who aren’t sure about what

they are doing can just look up (confused) and a staff member will come to the rescue. The larger, open and bright library interior is divided into major sections but has lots of private nooks for solitude. That makes it possible for adults, teens and children to have their own separate area. The result is more comfortable (and in some cases, quieter) for everyone, according to Kelly-Sprinkle. (Check out the delightful children’s area with stained-glass windows depicting scenes from “Thumbelina,” the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale.)

“There were some populations in our community that we weren’t able to serve very well before, and teens were one of those groups,” admits Kelly-Sprinkle. “Now that we have a designated teen room with their own computers and study rooms, we see so many more teens and college-age students just coming to study here. And I love that.” Additional programming for teens is also gearing up. A board game and chess night started with exactly zero participants — now it can boast of 20 and counting.

Kelly-Sprinkle is also excited about the expanded use of the library’s new outdoor, gated reading gardens that can be accessed from the children’s area as well as the north end of the building. “People can go out and read, study, have a cup of coffee or a snack,” says KellySprinkle, noting that the garden features tables and chairs, wooden loungers and memorial benches. “It’s a beautiful landscaped area with a path of engraved pavers that were purchased prior to the opening of the building. Maybe if the weather is great, we will even hold book discussions outside.” Plus, the library also has six eSports stations with large wall monitors for spectator viewing, a quiet reading room with fireplace, a café-style seating area with vending machines, and a reservable 150-seat multi-purpose room with all the amenities to hold a meeting, lecture or conference. “We pretty much fit in everything the community wanted,” says Kelly-Sprinkle, who says the library’s goal is to make

residents happy, as well as educate, inform and inspire. Patrons also got the pull-up, drop-off window they wanted. And the outdoor lockers that are accessed with a library card, making it easier for those individuals who find it difficult to visit the library during regular hours. “It all starts when you walk in the front door. It’s just all so welcoming,” says KellySprinkle. “Everyone really appreciates that.” Pete Sandrev, owner of The Wine Room in Avon, has been instrumental,

along with his sister-in-law Karina Robbins, in coordinating The Book Club at The Wine Room. The club began about seven years ago and has about 20 members. Some members prefer to check out library materials, he says, instead of buying everything. A longtime booklover, Sandrev considers the Avon Branch Library to be an extraordinary resource supported by tax dollars. “In reality, it costs you nothing to go there. It’s a great place to go and get into the habit of reading,” he says.

AVON ISLE PARK

NORTHGATE PARK

37080 Detroit Road

2155 Eaton Drive

In 1997, the City of Avon purchased the Avon Isle along with four acres of surrounding land. The Parks & Recreation Department offices operated from the building until 2003. After the building was placed on the National Register for Historic Places in July of 2010, the restoration of the old dance hall began. Today the Avon Isle has become a popular spot for weddings, receptions, graduation parties, showers and more. cityofavon.com/facilitiesinfo.

WILBUR CAHOON HOUSE MUSEUM 2940 Stoney Ridge Road

COURTESY CITY OF AVON

The home of Wilbur Cahoon and his family, Avon’s first settlers, is located at 2940 Stoney Ridge Road. On September 14, 1814, the Cahoon family settled on 800 acres of land after moving from Salisbury, New York. The original Cahoon family log cabin was built just south of the current home’s location. Construction of the historic 12-room Greek Revival style home began in 1825 and the home was placed on

the National Historic Register of Historic Places in 1978. The museum is open to the public from early Spring to early December. Visit cityofavon.com/facilitiesinfo for museum hours.

TRAXLER FAMILY ARBORETUM — COMING SOON!

The city purchased this 34-acre property, which is located on Stoney Ridge Road west of the Avon Early Learning Center, in September 2023. The city is looking to transform this 34-acre property into a passive park/arboretum.
