SENSES FEAST FOR THE

BLINK is back! The biennial four-day, city-wide public art experience unlike any other returns October 17–20. BLINK lights up the darker nights this fall with awe-inspiring murals, playful lighting projections and installations, urban artscapes, drones and musical performances. Cincinnati’s art deco skyscrapers, iconic landmarks and riverfront views come to life in a whole new way.

In 2022, over 2 million people attended BLINK’s 100+ experiences across 30 city blocks. To kick off the weekend, more than 85 arts and community groups paraded with 2,500 participants to celebrate hundreds of hard working visual artists, volunteers, visionaries, musicians and experts. Honoring the history and the artists who make this city magical, BLINK melds local, national and international artists’ imaginations with the city as its playground.

Two-dimensional murals by day turn into three-dimensional light shows by night.

Notable exhibits in the past have included String Theory for Dummies, a tangled labyrinth of yarn for everyone to touch and shape; Crescendo, a tucked-away musical exhibit where a piano transforms sound into light under a tree’s embrace; Enhanced Forest, a magical moonlit forest clearing; and Arcade of Light, an interactive collection of retro-style games to reconnect to childhood wonder. Don’t miss the nightly drone show shimmering above the Ohio River!

BLINK spans from Over-the-Rhine through downtown, the Banks, across the river and into Covington and Newport. The experience is free and runs from 7–11 p.m. each night. Make a whole weekend out of it and see the impact of the nation’s largest light, art and projection show on our innovative city and your imagination.

CROWNING

“THE ENTERTAINER”

Get to know Mira, founder and producer of Queen Bee Cabaret.

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO DANCING BURLESQUE?

I grew up dancing, mostly jazz and ballet. When I was living in New York, I came across a burlesque show and fell in love. I took some classes at the New York School of Burlesque and was just hooked after that. I had planned to move back to New York after finishing design school, but the pandemic happened! I could see that there was a desire in the Cincinnati community for live experiences and connections, so I started Queen Bee Cabaret here in 2020. We were just a tiny, socially distant outdoor show at Comfort Station at the time, in East Walnut Hills. It just went crazy and we’ve grown from there.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT PERFORMING?

I love bringing unique experiences to people that can inspire them in an unexpected way and break up people’s everyday lives. Going to a show can expand your mind. I think it can be really inspiring for people in a way they don’t expect. We have a monthly show at Ghost Baby that’s classic burlesque with a full live band, and we sometimes perform at Second Sight Spirits in Ludlow.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS AROUND THE CINCY REGION?

For music and a good date-night spot, Ghost Baby. For a casual summer hangout, I love Carriage House Farm, which we’ve done shows at. Great coffee, drinks and good people would be Second Sight Spirits. And my favorite food and ambiance spot would be Sotto.

LISTEN LIVE

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL Find more than just live music at these local venues, from open mic nights to dance parties to comedy shows. Catch a variety of live music concerts in a converted church at Southgate House Revival in Newport or at the historic Madison Theater in Covington. Many famous names have appeared in concert at Bogart’s, a Clifton neighborhood staple since 1975. In Over-the-Rhine on highenergy Main Street, find intimate shows with original artists at MOTR Pub and The Hub OTR. Be the star yourself at eclectic Northside Yacht Club’s weekly karaoke parties. If you’re in need of a laugh or two, sit down for a stand-up act at Go Bananas Comedy Club or Commonwealth Sanctuary in Dayton, Kentucky.

ON THE BIG STAGE

Your favorite artists are bound to make an appearance at one of Cincy’s big-stage venues. The summer months are ideal for an outdoor show at Riverbend Music Center, a 20,000-person amphitheater on the Ohio River. For both summer and winter concerts, check out MegaCorp Pavilion, one of the only dual indoor-outdoor venues in America — with a striking view of downtown Cincy from its vantage point in Newport to boot. Andrew J. Brady Music Center (ABOVE) on The Banks attracts national acts to its multilevel indoor venue and lawn venue next door. Taft Theatre hosts concerts, comedy shows and speakers in its art deco theater, while historic Music Hall — one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks — features everything from opera to symphony orchestra to ballet and more.

From intimate shows to big-stage performances to celebratory events, hear live music your way in Cincy. BY MADELINE

ALL DAY LONG Concerts don’t have to be a one-night-only event! In July, head over to The Banks for the Cincinnati Music Festival, founded back in 1962, for your favorite R&B, jazz, soul and hip-hop artists. Cincy Soul: The Black Taste highlights African American entrepreneurship in the region through performance art and food, where Black-owned restaurants, caterers and food trucks come together for a foodie experience like no other. In September, the Whispering Beard Folk Festival offers a family-friendly camping and folk music experience in North Bend. For fans of rock ’n’ roll, Southgate House Revival hosts a two-night punk festival called Iron Fest each November.

THE WALK

Walk amongst the stars to learn about musical greats. BY

Founded in 2021 and opened in 2023 outside the Andrew J. Brady Music Center, the Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame pays homage to the region’s rich musical history. This high-tech, interactive attraction honors those with southeastern Ohio roots who have impacted funk, opera, hip-hop, gospel, R&B, rock and more beyond the reach of the region.

The Walk of Fame has been announcing inductees each year, starting with founding members Bootsy Collins, Otis Williams, the Isley Brothers and Dr. Charles Fold. Since then, the collection of stars has grown to include icons such as Penny Ford, Wilbert Longmire, James Brown and Louise Shropshire.

The Walk of Fame is also an interactive technology park that celebrates the lives of musical artists, groups, songwriters and producers who have most greatly impacted music history. Step through the gateway to find informational kiosks that you can connect your smartphone to. Keep on walking for a dose of musical inspiration with pulse drums, 3D sculptures, a dance floor and more.

WHAT GOT YOU INTO THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY? My first job at a BW3s sparked my interest in the kitchen. It felt right in the industry, so I kept it up for many years after that. I went in looking to serve at a sush i bar, but because of my fluent Japanese, they hired me as a sushi chef. I really enjoyed it and have focused on the culinary industry ever since

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CINCINNATI RESTAURANT? I opened Kaze in Cincinnati in 2012. It was ambitious with 200 seats, really exhausting. I ended that partnership and opened Kiki in College Hill, where we’ve gotten some notoriety with a James Beard nomination. Next we added the fish market, Sen by Kiki, in Findlay Market — it’s beautiful to be there and gets me back into being part of the city. And we recently opened Daruma, a Japanese convenience store. When I lived in Japan, anything you ever needed was at these convenience stores, and I wanted to bring that to Cincy.

WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION TO THE JAMES BEARD NOMINATION IN 2023? It was surreal when I saw my wife’s and my name on there when we made it throu gh the semifinals. It was a surprise for me, and it’s big for Cinci nnati!

ASIDE FROM YOUR RESTAURANTS, WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO EAT? I’m a true Cincinnatian. I go to Skyline at least once a month for a single cheese coney with everything on it and a small three-way. Also, Findlay Market. I fell in love with the energy there … it’s definitely an engaging experience w of mom-and-pop shops inside. And lastly, Torta Garcia. They’re Hill with me at Kiki. I’m hooked! They make their own corn tort they do a phenomenal job.

AND BREWED BOTTLED

32 2023 CINCY REGION
The Queen City brewing scene may trace its roots to 19th-century German immigrants, but today’s scene is awash with innovation. With more than 70 breweries in the area, here are 14 recommendations to get you started. BY KEVIN J. GRAY

1 Third Eye Brewing (Sharonville) specializes in mindbending concoctions. The flagship Third Eye P.A. blends grapefruit and pine with an intense blend of hops for a bold but balanced mouthfeel.

2 Braxton Brewing Co. (Covington, Pendleton, Fort Mitchell, CVG Airport) famously started in a garage. Summertrip, a passion fruit Berliner Weisse, is a perfect beer for your own garage — crushable yet flavorful.

3 A portmanteau of “beer” and “circus,” Bircus Brewing Co. (Covington, Ludlow) turns fermentation into performance. Hey Rube juggles spalt hops and lager yeast with tightrope precision.

4 Though Darkness Brewing (Bellevue) was founded on a love of dark beers, Bellevue Common blends corn, barley and rye into a straw-colored ray of light.

5 Midwest Fruit Tart pioneer Urban Artifact (Northside) brews bold, fruit-forward beer with balanced acidity. With a literal ton of fruit per batch, The Gadget defines the style.

6 Doom Pedal from Fifty West (Mariemont) is a Witbier self-described as “unfiltered and hazy like your last road trip” — fitting given the brewery’s location along its namesake highway.

7 Focused on sustainability, MadTree Brewing Company (Oakley) adds orange, passion fruit and guava to its flagship beer to conjure a rainforest with its Tropical PsycHOPathy IPA.

8 Fibonacci Brewing Co. (Mount Healthy) is an urban farm that named Honey doppelbock after one of its beloved goats. Expect whiskey notes in this malty brew aged in New Riff barrels.

9 Rhinegeist (Over-the-Rhine) is located near ancient lagering caves, yet is far from traditional. Geist Tea is a hard sweet tea, an adult version of the summer favorite.

10 As Cincy’s first Asian and Black-owned brewery, Esoteric Brewing Co. (Walnut Hills) is dedicated to brewing beer that has a real social impact by sourcing local, organic ingredients. Sip slowly to savor the coffeeinfused brown ale, Black Bouquet.

11 West Side Brewing (Westwood) keeps it old school, making traditional beers well. Look for toasted malt notes in their Dunkel, a dark German-style lager.

12 Family-friendly Alexandria Brewing Company’s (Alexandria) Das Henker translates as “The Executioner.” Look for notes of clove and banana in this ironically named Bavarian-style hefeweizen.

13 March 1st (downtown Cincy, Highpoint) brews classic and retro styles, shunning trends. The Astra Red Cream Soda Hard Seltzer is a touchstone to childhood Ohio summers.

14 A nod to the former neighborhood name, Northwoods Cidery (Norwood) ferments classic ciders. Highlands blends apple crispness with hoppy bitterness, straddling cider and beer.

The B-Line ® invites visitors along a sensory sipping tour of Northern Kentucky via seven craft distilleries and several bourbon-centric bars and restaurants.

Multiple distilleries anchor The B-Line® (now celebrating its sixth year!), any of which would serve well as a starting point to your tasting tour. Neeley Family Distillery (BELOW) in Sparta, started by bootleggers turned legit, offers an assortment of whiskeys and moonshines, but don’t skip their award-winning absinthe. Boone County Distilling Co. (ABOVE INSET) in Florence has revived a 190-year-old legacy, claiming to be “Made by Ghosts.” Speaking of the occult, Ludlow’s Second Sight Spirits serves fermentables in a vaudeville-inspired lounge. Meanwhile, New Riff Distilling (LEFT) in Newport prides itself on being “a new riff on an old tradition.” Tour the facility and stay for a cocktail in their Aquifer Tasting Bar. At The Old Pogue Distillery in Maysville, fifthand sixth-generation Pogues produce whiskeys using original family recipes. In 2023, Augusta Distillery and Pensive Distilling Co. became the newest trail stops.

The B-Line’s restaurants provide more than just sustenance between distillery stops. Notable options include Libby’s, serving up chicken fried to a Kentucky standard, or The Purple Poulet in Newport, where you can feast on dishes that feature a fusion of Charleston, New Orleans and Kentucky cuisines. For an elegant and modern setting, try Coppin’s Restaurant at Hotel Covington.

Ready for a night cap? Multiple cocktail bars round out The B-Line. Lean into the speakeasy vibe at Newport’s Prohibition Bourbon Bar, known for its extensive collection of bourbons and ryes. Smoke Justis in Covington, named after a player on the shortlived Covington Blue Sox, is an urban sports bar with an impressive list of pours.

Get to know Hannah Lowen — newly promoted CEO of New Riff Distilling in Newport, Kentucky.

AS THE NEW CEO, WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

I am most excited about leading such a wildly talented and passionate team. We’re heading into our second decade with the same mission we’ve had since day one. All that care, energy and, dare I say, love, makes it into the bottle.

HOW DOES YOUR BACKGROUND IN BUILDING COMMUNITY IMPACT YOUR CURRENT ROLE?

This is just a taste of what The B-Line offers. Download

The string that has pulled through my entire life has always been my focus on people. I love learning about what we need from each other, what makes us feel good and, conversely, how to talk about the parts that can be challenging.

WHAT STEPS TOWARDS INCREASED DIVERSITY HAVE YOU SEEN IN YOUR INDUSTRY?

I see and hear a lot of distilleries working within their own four walls. But there is also impactful work being done by industry organizations to ensure more diversity overall. These initiatives have real funding behind them, often with direct support from distilleries themselves, and show that there is progress toward this goal. I keep meeting amazing people in the industry from all walks of life — it makes me optimistic for the future.

WHAT ARE THE MOST EXCITING NON-BOURBON ASPECTS OF CINCY AND NKY FOR YOU?

I am a serious consumer of the food and drink that Cincy and NKY offer. I love all the stories and the people behind these businesses. Plus the architecture! I am still discovering the amazing buildings and public spaces that harken back to this region’s heyday. I’ve also become a pretty serious Reds fan.

Paycor Stadium is the home of the National Football League’s Cincinnati Bengals, a three-time Super Bowl contender. Rev it up at one of the nearby bars or restaurants, or set up your own tailgate party at a local parking lot and help the Bengals rule the jungle. Who Dey!

The Cincinnati Reds are one of Major League Baseball’s storied franchises, so make a day of it by taking in a game at Great American Ball Park and visiting the Reds Hall of Fame & Museum next door. Downtown comes alive with action, history and fun during every game!

You’ve seen the red-andwhite-striped “Florence, Y’all” water tower, visible from the interstate 10 minutes south of Cincinnati — this friendly Kentucky city takes that sentiment to heart by proudly backing the Y’alls, an independent baseball team in the Frontier League. Catch a game at Thomas More Stadium, where you can watch the action up-close. When it’s icy outside, warm up with the Cincinnati Cyclones, a minor-league affiliate of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres. They take to the ice at the Heritage Bank Center, located next to Great American Ball Park. Highfive with “Puckchop,” the team’s whimsical mascot that hearkens to Cincinnati’s “Porkopolis” heritage.

If you’re a soccer fan, come cheer on Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati from February through October. Watch the Orange and Blue at the sparkling new TQL Stadium (PICTURED), one of the country’s newest soccerspecific venues. You’ll have great views from every angle as you watch some of the best players in the world show off their talent.

Don’t miss top tennis action at the Cincinnati Open (ABOVE), a men’s and women’s professional event held Aug. 11–19 at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. Star women golfers tee it up Sept. 19–22 for the third LPGA Kroger Queen City Championship presented by P&G.

CROWNING LOCAL “THE ATHLETE”

Get to know Sam Hubbard, a Cincy native and defensive end for the Cincinnati Bengals.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE THE FIRST TIME YOU PLAYED FOR THE BENGALS IN THE STADIUM? It’s a special feeling, running out of that tunnel. My first game was on a Thursday night versus Baltimore — the energy was unbelievable. I got to play a lot more than expected due to injuries and had a sack early in the game. I couldn’t even believe that I was out there making plays. It was a dream come true.

WHAT MAKES CINCY DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MIDWESTERN TOWNS? People don’t expect hills — the landscapes are really cool. We’ve got amazing parks to go for nature walks at, like Ault Park and Alms Park. Loveland Bike Trail is one of my favorites. It’s cool how you go across the river and you’re in Kentucky. You get the best of both worlds: a considerable city but with a lot of nature that’s easy to get around.

WHAT IS THE NO. 1 THING A FIRST-TIME VISITOR HAS TO DO IN CINCINNATI? Obviously go to a Bengals or Reds game and check out The Banks. But I would also say that Cincy has an underrated food scene. My girlfriend and I are on a Cincy food tour. We’ve recently been to Nolia Kitchen, Mita’s and Frankie’s Sips & Savories, and we’re trying Five on Vine next. We already love Pepp & Dolores, Sotto and Boca.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THE SAM HUBBARD FOUNDATION? After my rookie year, I was looking for a way to get involved with the community. We started with a kids’ camp from my high school. After COVID hit, I launched a GoFundMe that went viral, raising $80,000–$90,000. I knew then we had something special. Staggeringly, 1 out of 5 people are living with food insecurity in Cincinnati. We’re helping kids in the form of Hubbard’s Cupboards, in partnership with the Crayons to Computers nonprofit. The cupboards provide healthy snacks and supplies to students that need it. We’re in 21 schools right now, with a goal of 70 by 2030.

CROWNING LOCAL “THE ARTIST”

Get to know Gee Horton, an accomplished visual artist and Kentucky native.

WAS BEING A VISUAL ARTIST THE PATH YOU ALWAYS THOUGHT YOU’D BE ON?

My pathway to a career as an artist just happened organically — it was kind of divine or spiritual in the way it just naturally came about. It was a combination of leaning into what I was naturally good at and what felt right at the time. With repetition and consistency, I started to carve out a lane, which allowed me to do this full time.

WHICH UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS OR PROJECTS ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT?

I’ll be part of a group exhibition this summer at the Mansfield Art Center in Mansfield, Ohio. I’m also going to be a part of FotoFocus Bienniel this year, and I’ll have a solo exhibition at the Kennedy Heights Arts Center that will debut in early September. And I’m hoping to be part of BLINK in 2024!

WHAT ELSE ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT?

My family — my wife and two kids, who I spend a lot of my time with. I love this city. I’m particularly passionate about artists, especially artists of color, and how I can be a resource, how I can be supportive and how I can help grow our creative economy as it pertains to Black artists.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS AROUND CINCINNATI?

Pata Roja is my favorite taco spot — they’re opening a taqueria this year. BlaCk Coffee Lounge is another go-to spot. Of course (and not just because of my work) I love visiting all the art museums.

Cincy boasts an impressive collection of colorful murals adorning its historic buildings. Here are a few of our faves: Cincinnati Toy Heritage (FAR RIGHT) on West Court Street celebrates the city’s rich history of toy production with Care Bear, Strawberry Shortcake, C3PO and more. The river valley comes to life at the Riverfront Floodwall Mural Tour in Covington, depicting 18 images of thousands of years of history. A collaboration led by ArtWorks, Love Wins (ABOVE RIGHT) celebrates the LGBTQ+ community’s

contributions to Cincinnati in a kaleidescope of colors. A similarly eye-catching array of colors on Liberty Street is Mr. Dynamite (ABOVE LEFT), a tribute to one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, James Brown. Murals in Cincy draw national and international artists, too — the FAILE Murals in Covington are contemporary and collage-style from Brooklyn-based artist group FAILE. The mural on the 84.51° building from LA-based designer Tristan Eaton is the largest in Ohio at 18,000 square feet, showcasing the biggest music legends from the region. The Dunlap Café Mural by Jenny Ustick — a collab between Ustick, the Cincinnati Kharkiv Sister Cities Partnership and Cincy for Ukraine — highlights the beauty, history and culture of Ukraine. Be sure to stop by the city’s sculptures, including Sing the Queen City and Pendleton Spinnradl, both celebrating the culture and history of the region.

CROWNING LOCAL “THE ARCHAEOLOGIST”

Get to know Bill Kennedy, site manager and archaeologist at Fort Ancient Earthworks and Nature Preserve in Oregonia.

WHERE DID YOUR INTEREST IN OHIO’S PREHISTORIC CULTURES ORIGINATE?

My interest in local history really started me on the path, but I didn’t know if or how that could be a career path. Once I took an Intro to Archaeology course at Wright State, that showed me that there was much more to learn and a way to seriously pursue it.

HOW DOES THE RECENT UNESCO DESIGNATION SUPPORT YOUR WORK?

Many people are unaware of the incredible Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks in southern Ohio. Southern Ohio was a major pilgrimage place by American Indians from across eastern North America about 2,000 years ago.

Looking for a calm afternoon? The serene and suburban Summit Park has an observation tower, playground, trails and four excellent restaurants, while downtown’s Smale Riverfront Park has a paved pathway, playground and swings. Eden Park is home to a museum, playhouse and conservatory; Mount Echo Park has hiking trails, playgrounds and sports facilities; and Bellevue Park has a unique pavilion designed as an outdoor dancing venue. All three provide excellent river views. At the riverside Sawyer Point, you’ll find playgrounds, walking paths and a bandstand. On the Kentucky side, Licking Riverside is a walkable, tree-lined historic district. Or you can take a relaxing cruise on the waterway itself. BB Riverboats offers sightseeing cruises on historic sternwheelers while SS Tiki Tours has private pontoon boat rentals for up to 18 people. Travel even further in the past at Fort Ancient Earthworks and Nature Preserve in Oregonia (FAR LEFT AND BOTTOM RIGHT), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When it’s time to get up and move, hit the lakeside trails at Sharon Woods or rent a pedal or rowboat. Winton Woods has paved fitness and nature trails while the Cincinnati Nature Center’s (LEFT INSET) 1,800 acres are laced with 14 miles of pathways. The 1.3-mile loop in Alms Memorial Park provides great views of the river, while Kentucky’s Devou Park offers the best view of the city itself. If you’d rather “spoil” a good walk (as the barb goes), swing by Kentucky’s World of Golf for a full 18-hole course, as well as mini-golf, FootGolf and a driving range. If you want to hit some balls with friends, Topgolf offers food and a full bar and is conveniently located near various shopping options.

To really roll out some miles, head to the Loveland Bike Trail in Little Miami Scenic State Park. Not only does the trail span 70 miles, but it also has connections to well over 100 more miles of trails — plus downtown Loveland offers free parking near coffee and ice cream shops and restaurants. To extend your range, grab a Bird or a Lime E-scooter downtown or go even further with Mile 2 Mile in Newport, Kentucky, which offers hourly moto-scooter rentals. Disc golfers can head to Idlewild in Burlington, Kentucky, for a pro-level course that’s considered one of the toughest in the world. Within city limits, Mt. If you’re a mountain biker or paddler, the region has you covered too. A.J. Jolly Park offers kayak rentals, while Harsha Lake in East Fork State Park is excellent for flatwater paddling. Miami Whitewater Forest rents rowboats, pedal boats, hydrobikes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and mini-pontoon boats for their lake. For swifter waters, you can paddle the Little Miami River with rental canoes or kayaks from a local livery. Feeling ambitious? Paddle the 250 miles of the new Ohio River Way, a National Water Trail that runs from Portsmouth, Ohio, to West Point, Kentucky, with charming river towns dotting the way — or you can bike the adjacent paths instead. For mountain biking, check out Devou Park’s 9 miles of trails or shred the 12 miles of the England-Idlewild Trail System.

At this level, it’s time to fly. Ozone Zipline Adventures has a six-line tour that crosses the Little Miami River. For tours of up to 19 zip lines, as well as an aerial course and free fall tower, head to Screaming Raptor Zip Lines. Defy Florence’s indoor zip line complements its trampolines, parkour area, trapeze, aerial silks and more. Sports Plus Cincinnati offers two ice hockey rinks, figure skating, broomball, open skating and sled hockey, while Full Throttle Adrenaline Park has go-karting, paintball, minibikes, a “rage room” and more. Just north of the city, Kings Island (LEFT INSET) is 364 acres of thrills with eight themed areas and more than 100 rides, attractions and shows to get your heart pumping.

We now have eight earthworks in Ohio that are UNESCO World Heritage sites. This will raise international awareness and hopefully inspire many people to visit who otherwise wouldn’t.

HOW DOES YOUR WORK IN RECONSTRUCTION HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE PAST?

I’ve spent many years rebuilding ancient wooden architecture. This work helps us to understand architecture and the relationship between American Indians and their natural environment.

IN WHAT INTERESTING WAYS IS OUR PAST CONNECTED TO OUR CURRENT REGION?

Most people in Southwest Ohio are not aware of the aquifers here and how the creation of those aquifers during the Ice Age has impacted people in Ohio from the Ice Age to the present.

ZOOdays

Home of perhaps the world’s most famous hippo, Fiona, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is the second oldest in the nation (and its Reptile House is the oldest zoo building in the country). It is known for its innovative birthing program with a variety of species — a program so successful that Fiona now has a baby brother, Fritz, named via collective vote by fans. There’s even a page on the zoo website dedicated to new animal births.

Zoo favorites include the collection of exotic felines (which ranges from cheetahs and snow leopards to sand cats), manatees, penguins and, of course, Fiona’s hippo family (LEFT). You can explore 21 habitats including Gorilla World, Lemur Lookout, Roo Valley, Wolf Woods, World of the Insect and the brand-new Elephant Trek.

Beyond meeting animal friends, there’s an electric train to ride around the grounds, a carousel, an aerial adventure course and a variety of dining options, including a beer garden with local brews.

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is often rated by peers as one of the best zoos in the nation and continues to set new standards for conservation of wild animals and their habitats. More than 1.5 million people visit the zoo annually, and their holiday Festival of Lights has been rated the best zoo lights in America.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (BELOW INSET) takes us back to when the Ohio River separated Southern slave states and Northern free states. Learn about the courageous people who escaped slavery and explore the ongoing fight for inclusive freedom through films, exhibits and hands-on activities. Outside the museum, learning continues on the Clermont County Freedom Trail — a self-guided mobile tour that will take you to stops on the Underground Railroad, homes of abolitionists and sites like the Harriet Beecher Stowe House (PICTURED). The historic home honors the local roots and lasting impact of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Smale Riverfront Park’s Black Brigade Monument commemorates 718 African American men who volunteered to build barricades in Northern Kentucky to protect Cincinnati from the Confederates despite first being forced into service. New in 2024, experience the power of art through Moving Chains — a 110-foot-long shiplike structure by conceptual artist Charles Gaines, brought to Cincinnati by ArtsWave. This kinetic sculpture reminds viewers of the brutal history of slavery and American imperialism. After gaining a deeper understanding, you can celebrate Black heritage and culture by admiring local music legends at the Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame opened last year.

Millennia of Faith

The Skirball Museum zooms in to the local Jewish community and zooms out to view Judaism around the world. The Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center, located in Union Terminal, focuses on “Education that Inspires Action.” Plum Street Temple (BELOW), a key synagogue in American history, features an intricate rose window and beautiful arched entrances to ogle. The Chestnut St. Cemetery was the first Jewish burial ground west of the Allegheny Mountains — a tiny plot of land with a large historic footprint. Celebrate Jewish art, food and culture at the annual ish Festival.

Bible Walk

The Ark Encounter (RIGHT) brings biblical stories to life inside the impressive re-creation of Noah’s Ark. The Creation Museum walks visitors through a chronological experience of the Bible and features a petting zoo, planetarium and botanical gardens. Follow the Kentucky Faith Trail to discover more inspiring spiritual attractions.

TUNE IN

At first glance, you might not suspect Cincy’s Race Street once echoed with Hank William’s baritone, but from 1945 to 1955, Herzog Studio recorded artists like Williams, Bull Moose Jackson and Patti Page. Look for the historical marker outside 811 Race St. The Evanston neighborhood also boasts a historic soundtrack. King Records recorded everything from Appalachian folk to jazz to the funk-tastic tracks of James Brown.

CROWNING LOCAL “THE HISTORIAN”

Meet Dr. Anne Delano Steinert, assistant professor of history at the University of Cincinnati and founding board chair of the Over-the-Rhine Museum.

WHAT WILL VISITORS EXPERIENCE AT THE OVER-THE-RHINE MUSEUM WHEN IT OPENS?

We’re rehabilitating a historic tenement building (RIGHT) that will contain six families’ apartments spanning from the 1860s to the 2000s. We have researched more than 150 families that lived in the building, including German immigrants who had a stone cutting business on the ground floor, a family of Russian Jewish immigrants who owned the building during World War II and a biracial family who lived there in the ‘90s. Visitors will have immersive experiences in these time capsule apartments, engaging all their senses — feeling the size of the rooms, smelling and seeing the objects in the rooms — to transform their understanding of the past. We are currently fundraising, and I encourage everyone to sign up for our newsletter at otrmuseum.org.

WHAT DREW YOU TO HISTORIC PRESERVATION?

I grew up in Cincinnati and have always been fascinated by the stories held within our city’s historic buildings. Now, I work to preserve Cincinnati’s built environment as a document of our history. Once buildings are gone, there is nothing left to jog our collective memory, and soon it’s as if they’d never been there. History is all around us and it’s valuable. Some may think it’s a hindrance,

but it drives economic development. People want to live in walkable, connective urban neighborhoods surrounded by a sense of the past. History is what is driving people to places like Over-the-Rhine.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CINCY MUST-SEES?

Everyone should go to the Burlington Antique Festival in Kentucky, take a ride on the Anderson Ferry and visit The Comet for Sunday night bluegrass and great Mexican food. Sign up for a walking tour with the Over-the-Rhine Museum and check out the cool new map of Cincinnati public stairways created by Spring in our Steps.

In Cincy, entrepreneurs, local artists and innovative thinkers are threads in the tapestry of the region’s creative community. Get to know a few of the faces behind the work.

CONNECTED

Under the direction of owner and entrepreneur Means Cameron, BlaCk Coffee Lounge and BlaCk OWned Outerwear are businesses that have made a name for themselves both locally and nationally. Coffee, culture and companionship are staples at the coffee shop, while the clothing brand is a favorite of renowned musicians and athletes — including Joe Burrow.

As a civic organizer and co-founder of COVunity Fridge, Missy Spears’ social responsibility and business sense serve her community well. She’s seen with her own eyes how Covington business owners contribute to their community in more ways than by just running a business.

“Because of that immersion,” Spears explains, “we have managed to grow our city through one-of-a-kind small businesses that have built a culture of support and collaboration.” And the results show. “This has made our local scene more creative, authentic, tasty, artistic and community/resident driven,” says Spears.

Equal parts savvy and down-to-earth, Ricardo Grant founded Paloozanoire as a way to enrich the lives of people of color through creativity, corporate leadership and entrepreneurship. The org celebrates with a Juneteenth Block Party and its Black & Brown Faces art show that welcomes all.

There is no question that Cincy is a music scene hotbed. But it takes more than just being a guitar shredder to make it big. Executive Director Kick Lee at the Cincinnati Music Accelerator (CMA) assists both emerging and experienced musicians with networking, workshops, production methods and more — whatever it takes to get musicians on stage and their music to the public.

Combine social activism, poetry, hip-hop and soul, plus a love for Cincy, and who do you have? Siri Imani, a multi-talented performer, peace promoter and philanthropist. Imani’s foundation, Triiibe, hosts potlucks and book clubs and most recently opened an urban garden. All events are geared to fostering expression and understanding. Additionally, in 2022, Imani Productions booked more than 300 local artists, including DJs and musicians, giving them a paycheck and recognition.

It started with a wooden sign that two sisters made for their parents in 2013. Since then, artistic abilities and business sense have guided Melyssa Kirn and Michele Tibbs to expand their venture of creating wood-centric, one-of-a-kind creations. Two retail stores, Grainwell Boutique Covington and Grainwell Boutique Hyde Park, offer framed items, coasters and more.

For a taste of Cincy’s local arts scene, check out the newly opened Mean Street Gallery on Main Street in Over-the-Rhine. This small-but-mighty gallery led by a team of professional artists curates a mix of local and out of town artists, connecting Cincinnati creatively to the rest of the world.

NOURISHING

Adobada tacos. What’s not to love?

Under the direction of Sergio Gutierrez, OLLA Taqueria Gutierrez is a casual restaurant in Covington featuring authentic Mexican street food. Translated to English, “olla” means “cooking pot” or “saucepan” — appropriate given the expertly developed flavors you’ll find on the menu.

The Hub, a popular bar, event and music venue in Over-the-Rhine may have a new home this year, with plans to move a door or two down to 1215 Main St. This new spot, formerly a Baptist Church, is a fitting setting for the enthusiastic and lively shows that regularly take place there. Bar owner Lindsey Swadner is excited to have more space, plus separate rooms, a larger billiards area and a back patio.

Co-owners Kristen Kreft and Mayalou Banatwala have successfully established their brand and company, Rocktails, as a bar consulting and event coordinating business. The music industry and mixology delightfully collide for these two who create books, cocktail infusion kits, stickers and more. Look for their products at Toko Baru, Kismet OTR, Originalitees and Roebling Point Books and Coffee.

Mama’s on Main, a traditional Italian restaurant that opened in 2022, can hardly keep the pasta bowl full because of high demand. The eatery keeps its tight menu packed with classics (think cacio e pepe and arancini with romesco), thanks to the leadership of experienced restaurateurs Emily Wolff and Paul Weckman. Their impressive and versatile portfolio of restaurants plays a huge part in making Covington’s expansive foodie scene a destination. That includes margaritas and tacos at the Frida Kahlo-inspired Frida 602, upscale southern fare perfected at Otto’s, cold beer and hot dogs with all the fixins at Larry’s dive bar and craft cocktails served in an old converted auto garage at The Standard.

Get to know Wilbur — a French bulldog and elected Mayor of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, since 2020.

HOW DID YOU GET THIS JOB? Our campaign coincides with the U.S. Presidential election, when canines and other animals throw their best paw (or claw) in the ring. Each vote requires a $1 donation and the money goes to the Rabbit Hash Historical Society. When I launched my, “Vote for Wilbur, He’s All Ears!” campaign in 2020, I was just a fuzzy puppy. I won the election with 13,145 votes.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PLATFORM. I’m just a dog who loves pawitics and making people smile. My heart lies in fundraising to serve the local community. I’ve raised $4,000 for non-profits and rescues during my term.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE? My challenges are nothing compared to what some animals are facing — homelessness, abuse and neglect. I have no complaints.

IS THERE A MESSAGE YOU’D LIKE TO LEAVE YOUR CONSTITUENTS WITH? The new mayoral election is approaching quickly — vote early and often for your favorite candidates. I won’t be seeking re-election … because I’m running for President of the United States instead! I’ll be announcing my running mate soon.
