Since 1992, the Barton Polka Festival has celebrated its local Polish heritage with an atmosphere of fun and food. Around 1,700 people come out each year to feast on homemade cabbage rolls, kielbasa, sauerkraut and pierogies and to listen to polka bands. “We have numerous people that travel from Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Indiana each year for the fest,” says Jeff Gazdik, who chairs the event with his wife, Cara, every year. With such popularity, the festival has become the largest and oldest festival of its kind in a 60-mile radius.

GREAT STONE VIADUCT

There are few structures in Belmont County as iconic as the Great Stone Viaduct. For over 150 years, the towering stone arches have greeted visitors to Bellaire — a lasting reminder of the impact of railroads in the area. Now, visitors can explore the viaduct for themselves; as of this past October, a 20-arch portion of the stone viaduct is open to the public as a converted walking trail, including a new plaza and overlook. Stroll along the trail for stunning views, and admire the beauty and vastness behind this monument to engineering.

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD MUSEUM

Considered a hidden gem in Belmont County, the Underground Railroad Museum (which is part of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program) strives to help us all understand slavery and the culture during that period of history. Belmont County’s population of anti-slavery Quaker settlers and its location along the

Ohio River made it essential in the Underground Railroad and abolitionist movement. The museum collection includes more than 8,000 items, which can be seen in person or virtually. See the newest exhibit, “Our Local Heroes,” which highlights those from Belmont County who participated in the fight for freedom.

While you’re visiting Belmont County, don’t overlook its plethora of museums dedicated to celebrating the area’s unique history, from quirky LEGO sculptures to elegant glassware.

HAUNTED

Uncover the tragic tale of Belmont County’s resident ghost and find out where you might catch a glimpse of her.

In 1869, a murder shocked Egypt Valley — once known, simply, as the farming village of Egypt. Louiza Catharine Fox, a 13-year-old housemaid, was murdered by Thomas Carr, a 22-yearold coal miner. A member of the Union army during the Civil War, Carr had a history of violence; he often fought other Union soldiers and was even sentenced to be shot twice throughout his military career. There are conflicting reports as to the exact nature of Carr and Fox’s relationship, but it is known that Carr relentlessly pursued the young girl until he realized his efforts were in vain, and he ultimately killed her.

Following Fox’s murder on January 21, 1869, Carr was sentenced to death in a highly publicized trial, where he confessed to an additional 14 murders — making him one of America’s first serial killers.

Carr’s public hanging was the first and only legal execution carried out in the county. According to local legend, Fox’s ghost still wanders two areas in Egypt Valley, unable to move on from her untimely death. Start on Starkey Road for a ghost hunt of your own, where a small stone marker commemorates the spot of Fox’s murder. Then, make your way to Salem Cemetery in Hendrysburg, where you can find Fox’s grave. Sightings are not guaranteed, of course, but if you’re lucky, you might spy a ghostly girl roaming the lonely countryside.

Haunted Hills of Belmont County

Louiza Fox isn’t the only ghost you might encounter in Belmont County; follow the Ghostly Legends and Lore Trail to learn about more spooky local tales. From a cursed gravestone and reports of hellhounds to historic haunted houses and a now-abandoned casket company, this paranormal trail is bound to give you a fright.

The history-rich Ohio River Scenic Byway offers almost continuous views of the Ohio River as it winds its way through Belmont County along State Route 7. Points of interest include the Sedgwick House Museum and Walnut Grove Cemetery in Martins Ferry, the final resting place of the Zane and Martin families dating back to 1798. The National Imperial Glass Museum offers exquisite examples of Imperial glass, including their famous Candlewick and Cape Cod designs. Don’t miss the Great Stone Viaduct, a relic of the region’s railroad history — you can drive under the structure and stroll along a new walking trail and plaza.

DROVERS' TRAIL SCENIC BYWAY

Winding along State Route 800 between Hendrysburg and Barnesville and State Route 147 from Barnesville to Bellaire, the Drovers’ Trail Scenic Byway is picturesque and perfect for those looking to explore the county. Dating back to the 19th century, the byway was once a heavily traveled route used to transport goods to markets. In addition to views of gorgeous rolling hills, the 37-mile stretch of road features plenty of places to stop, including the 26-room Belmont County Victorian Mansion Museum; the historic Plummer House, which was once a drover’s station; the Stillwater Meeting House, built in 1878; and the historic Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Depot. To stretch your legs, traipse through trails in Dysart Woods, which contains the only old growth forest in southeastern Ohio.

Discover the historic downtown districts of Morristown and St. Clairsville, both chock full of local shops and eateries for you to enjoy as you stroll through. Don’t forget to stop by the 1828 Blaine Hill “S” Bridge, Ohio’s oldest sandstone bridge.

CattleCALL

Live out your cowboy and cowgirl dreams without having to actually saddle up at Dickinson Cattle Co. in Barnesville. Tucked into southeast Ohio’s Appalachian foothills, the working cattle ranch’s Longhorns Head to Tails Tours deliver just the right amount of excitement.

The 75-minute interpretive tours let you get up close and personal with BueLingo, Texas Longhorn and African Watusi cattle herds — not exactly your

typical Ohio fauna. Follow the cattle aboard the ranch’s rugged buses that drive you through the landscape and pastures, learn about modern conservation ecology and feed the longhorns cow-candy, which you can purchase before the tour.

Standout moments include seeing Watusi cattle, one of the rarest breeds in the world, according to owner Darol Dickinson. The cattle are known for their imposing-looking

horns, but have a gentle temperament.

After your tour, lasso the crew and hit up Dickinson’s Longhorns Head to Tail Store. The 60-foot-by-30-foot shop features fresh longhorn beef, jerky and gifts such as horns and rugs. You can also buy the annual Texas Longhorn Celebrity Calendar, which features photos of longhorns from ranches in Ohio, Texas, Oregon, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Barn Stormer

Belmont County artist Scott Hagan talks barn painting.

You might not know Scott Hagan by name, but if you’ve spent any amount of time in Ohio, you’ve likely seen the artist’s work. He painted the state’s 88 Bicentennial Barn murals — one in every Ohio county — between 1998 and 2003. Hagan fills us in on what it was like to paint all those barns.

Q What did you learn about Ohio by painting all those barns?

A Ohio is so vast. From one end to the other, it’s almost like different countries in some ways. People have different accents. Even the barns are different. I was 19 when I started that. I hadn’t even been out of Belmont County that much. It’s really fun to look back.

Q What do you like about painting on large canvases like barns?

A The scale at times can be kind of daunting. You can work a long time on one area, and you look left and right and up and down, and there’s still a lot to do. But when you’re outside and the weather’s right, it’s just nice to be out there and work and listen to nature.

Unique Eats

Sure, we all know Chicago-style pizza, or New York-style pizza, but if you’re a true pizza aficionado, you’ll want to try Ohio Valley-style pizza. This square pie is served simultaneously hot and cold, with chilled cheese and pepperoni placed atop cooked dough and savory tomato sauce. A traditional slice is topped with grated provolone and two pepperoni slices per square piece, but other toppings can be added as well.

The original purveyor of Ohio Valley-style pizza is family-owned DiCarlo’s Pizza, where the owners’ son, Primo, returned from World War II with the idea to add pizza, a popular dish he’d sampled in Italy, to the offerings at the family’s bakery. You’ll find a few different variations on the theme in the Ohio Valley area, including places that cook a thin layer of cheese along with the dough and sauce before adding more cheese. Speaking of sauce, Ohio Valley-style isn’t sweet — DiCarlo’s pizza sauce is famously super savory.

Make MEMORIES

There’s always something happening in Belmont County! With an abundance of events, you’re bound to find something you’ll enjoy.

BELMONT COUNTY FAIR

There’s no finer fair than the Belmont County Fair, a family tradition since 1849. Starting on the Wednesday after Labor Day, the Belmont County Agricultural Society comes together to celebrate the community’s youth and showcase their accomplishments. From a monster truck exhibition to a family circus, there’s never a dull moment. Find livestock exhibitions, live entertainment, amusement rides and plenty of fair food that you just won’t be able to resist.

visitbelmontcounty.com 35
Interact with farm animals, like the goats pictured above, as you enjoy all the Belmont County Fair has to offer.

RUN FOR THE WALL

On Memorial Day weekend, Belmont County serves as a stop for hundreds of motorcyclists embarking on Run for the Wall, a journey from California to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., then onto the Middle East Conflicts Wall in Marseilles, Illinois, to round out their ride. The veterans’ motorcycling organization goals are to promote healing for all veterans, to call for an accounting of all prisoners of war and those missing in action, to honor the memory of those killed in action from all wars, and to support our military personnel across the world. Make your way to the Belmont County Courthouse for a community Memorial Day service to send the motorcyclists off onto the next leg of their journey.
