IS: While in Summit County, you can visit the Cuyahoga Falls riverfront for festivals and beautiful scenery. You can take a stroll around Barberton’s Lake Anna and head to the Arts and Entertainment District to see local artists on display. In the winter months you can hit the slopes for skiing and family fun at Boston Mills Brandywine.

DH: So much about this city is “uniquely Akron.” For those visiting or living here, we hope that our combination of friendly faces, access to local and national parks, sense of entrepreneurship, love of arts and entertainment, and pride in our rich history, coupled with our current infrastructure revitalization efforts, makes a lasting impression on those that experience Akron.

Greater Akronites (aka Summit Countians) constructed a firm foundation upon which our community comfortably rests. Twenty-first century metropolitan places are adjacent to some of our nation’s most breathtaking natural spaces, resulting in an undeniably engaging combination of experiences.

Social, ethnic and cultural diversity planted deep roots when immigrants traveled from around the country to Greater Akron, seeking work on the canal.

From those roots, an innovative spirit and an adamant conviction for dignity, rights and ideas quickly blossomed. In May 1851, Sojourner Truth attended the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in downtown Akron and presented her world-famous “Ain’t I A Woman?” speech. Through hardships, the community has thrived, meeting the demands of a war and solidifying the region’s role on the national stage. B.F. Goodrich, the Quaker Oats Co. and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. were among the founders. Once known as the “Rubber Capital of the World,” the area still reigns as one of the world’s leading polymer centers, sets the pace for biomedical discoveries and celebrates a culture that only knows how to look forward!

Live entertainment, dance and world-class orchestras provide audiences hours of memorable performances. The Akron Art Museum boasts national and international modern artists, with other galleries showcasing neighboring communities.

CAN’T BE HELD DOWN IN 1917, GOODYEAR CREATED THE GOODYEAR ZEPPELIN COMPANY and began manufacturing zeppelins mainly as a way to advertise their products. Then in the 1930s, they built two airships for military use – the USS Akron and the USS Macon. In the early 1960s, the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation helped NASA develop heating and cooling systems for the Apollo spacecrafts, produced tires used on moon vehicles, and created flotation devices for spacecrafts landing in water. Drive by the enormous Goodyear Airdock to see where the USS Akron and USS Macon were constructed.

THE MAKING GERTRUDE SEIBERLING BEGAN ATTENDING BUCHTEL COLLEGE when her husband’s business venture, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, became profitable.

She studied architecture, gardening, and interior design.

She wanted to be able to assist in building the family’s new home — a 65-room Tudor style mansion they would call Stan Hywet — when construction began in 1912. Visit Stan Hywet Halls & Gardens to learn more about the Seiberling family.

AKRON INNOVATES FOR YEARS, TOYS WERE ALL HANDMADE, making them available only to the children of wealthy families. In 1884, Samuel C. Dyke automated his Akron factory to mass-produce marbles, the first toy affordable for everyone. He then founded The American Marble & Toy Manufacturing Co. in the mid-1890s, which produced a million marbles a day and turned out dozens of other toys, including America’s oldest figurine of a Santa, pictured here. Visit the Akron Children’s Museum with the young ones to experience playful, interactive learning.

INTERNATIONAL TASTEMAKERS AS GERMAN IMMIGRANTS MOVED TO THE AREA IN THE EARLY DAYS OF AKRON, they introduced beer by opening the first breweries. In 1865, Fredrick Gaessler established Wolf Ledge Brewery. Later he partnered with Wilhelm Burkhardt and the company became Burkhardt and Company. They resumed brewing beer after prohibition ended and continued to operate until the brewery was sold in 1956. The tradition of brewing continues on today as Akron is home to several breweries. Thirsty Dog Brewing is located in the Wolf Ledges area in the former headquarters of the Burkhardt Brewing Company. Akron Civic Theatre

ARE WE NOT MUSIC LOVERS?

In the 1950s and 60s, Akron’s Howard Street was known as “Jazz Corridor.” The great musicians of the time would stop in Akron as they traveled from New York to Chicago.

Howard Street had a black-owned hotel and clubs where Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and many others performed.

A group of art students at Kent State University first came together as Devo in 1973. Their first album, Q. Are We Not Men? A. We Are Devo. was released in 1978, and they gained national attention with a Saturday Night Live appearance the same year.

Chrissie Hynde graduated from Firestone High School and went on to study at Kent State as well.

Hynde would form The Pretenders in 1978, and the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

In 1825 work began on the Ohio and Erie Canal. Simon Perkins noticed that there was nothing around the high point of the canal. He was sure a town around that part would do a lot of business selling to the travelers — even as they were moving goods. He began to make plans for a city and Akron was born.

A WORLD OF TASTE MAKERS The story of food and drink in Akron is the story of people who immigrated to the area from different parts of the world.

As German immigrants moved to the area in the early days of Akron, they opened the first breweries, a tradition that continues on today with breweries such as Thirsty Dog Brewing.

While selling concessions at a fair in Hamburg, New York, in 1885, German-descended Akronites Frank and Robert Menches ran out of pork sausage for their sandwiches and switched to ground beef. They named the sandwich after the fair, calling it a “Hamburg.”

Bob’s Hamburg opened in 1931, and Swenson’s in 1934.

Immigrants from all over the world continue to choose Akron, bringing the flavors of home with them, from Thai to Nepalese and many more.
