As you’re planning your perfect adventure, be on the lookout for ways to help Akron celebrate its bicentennial. That’s right — 2025 is the city’s 200th birthday. To highlight this momentous occasion, mark your calendar for the Akron Bicentennial Celebration taking place the first week of July. This multiday festival, located in downtown Akron, will feature a parade, food, music and more. Also be on the lookout for special events happening on Dec. 6 — Akron’s actual birthday. On that day in 1825, General Simon Perkins filed the plot of Akron at the courthouse in Ravenna.
With a desire to provide programming that would be open and accessible to the public and inclusive and reflective of Akron, the Bicentennial Commission also will offer a series of events taking place throughout the year, including monthly activities to be held in each of Akron’s 24 neighborhoods.
Looking for more ways to blast into the past? The Akron History Center officially opened in April and features 3,000 square feet of exhibits, industry, historic artifacts and pieces from the past. Visitors will learn about Akron’s founding — from the area’s early Indigenous people and the Western Reserve to the history around the Ohio & Erie Canal, Goodyear and the Soap Box Derby.

Queue up your adventure with the Summit County Historical Society of Akron, a steward of preservation that owns and manages Perkins Stone Mansion and John Brown House, both of which welcome visitors. Perkins Stone Mansion is a fine example of Greek Revival architecture. It once housed Colonel Simon Perkins, the son of Akron’s founder General Simon Perkins. At the John Brown House, check out the exhibit, “Family. Farm. Freedom.” before browsing through the gift shop.
Meanwhile, Akron-Summit County Public Library‘s Special Collections division houses an array of historic books, microfilms, periodicals and databases, including a geneology database. Next, visit the Akron History Center, which celebrates Akron’s bicentennial with 3,000 square feet of exhibits, relics and artifacts commemorating its industrial roots.
The Cummings Center for the History of Psychology at The University of Akron (in association with The Smithsonian Institution) tells the story of human science and culture. Peruse personal papers, photographs, artifacts and media from groundbreaking psychologists.
Inside the Boston Township Hall in Peninsula, an 1887 building, is the Cuyahoga Valley Historical Museum, which chronicles the region’s past through permanent and special exhibits like an account of Peninsula’s stone quarries and how they operated.
Akronite Dr. Bob Smith was co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, and you can visit his preserved arts-and-crafts home where he guided people through the famous 12 steps.
Take in a piece of Akron’s history in a peaceful setting at Glendale Cemetery. Devoted sections honor the Masons, Akron’s Jewish community, Civil War Veterans, infants and children. Don’t miss the bell tower that was used to commemorate special events like the end of both World Wars.
The Heritage Corridors of Bath connects 19th-century hamlets with Hale Farm & Village, Bath Nature Preserve and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Explore early homes, barns, cemeteries and mills along the byway. Stop by the Bath Township Historical Society for a Bath Barns Tour map — there are nine on the route to explore.
Visit the Cellar Door Boutique in the Hower House Museum to shop for giftables from jewelry to decor to teacups.
The 1871 Victorian mansion, Hower House Museum , was built by a leading Akron industrialist. Tour the 28-room estate, complete with three floors, a ballroom and servants’ quarters on the third floor. This destination remains one of the finest and best-preserved examples of its style in the country.
Honor American heroes at Ohio Veterans’ Memorial Park, where you’ll find the country’s longest freestanding monument held in place by its own weight. (The national wall in Washington, D.C., is held in place by backfill.) Visit in August to catch the annual Corvette Club Car Show.
During the 1800s, up to 70 boats a day passed through Lock 15 to gather supplies at what is now the Mustill Store on the Towpath Trail in Cascade Locks Park. The old general store and deli offers soaps, candles, souvenirs and books.
