AN APPETITE FOR ITALIAN

People rave about the zesty homemade Italian salad dressing at Angie’s Italian Restaurant. The familyowned favorite, circa 1955, is known for its traditional dishes and pizzas. Antonio’s Pizzeria serves up pies with robust topping combos. Feeling adventurous? Try the Portobello Philly, Ranch Potato Skin or The Supremo with all the fixings.

At Bellacino’s Pizza & Grinders, subs are stuffed to the max with fresh-baked bread and hearty toppings. You’ll either feed an army or have serious leftovers — hence the extra-sturdy to-go boxes.

Another Italian classic?

Combine art, jazz and spirits at BLU Jazz+, another downtown destination. Step into another era at The Watson, a Gilded-Age-inspired speakeasy hidden (spoiler alert) on Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls — order The Watson Old Fashioned.

At Northside Speakeasy (RIGHT), tucked inside the Courtyard Marriott, plush velvet curtains conceal a moody, intimate lounge. Vacancy offers a two-inone concept: a lively sports bar upstairs and an ambiant speakeasy downstairs that features exquisite handcrafted cocktails and a luscious espresso martini list.

At Green Valley Brewing Co., the mission is pretty simple: serve great food and great beer. While you’re there, chill over a drink on the patio — a hazy IPA perhaps? — and order a 10-ounce Bavarian pretzel served with house-made beer cheese and mustard aioli.

Laid-back industrial is the vibe at Lock 15 Brewing Co., housed in the former Swinehart Tire Factory. With 100 seats available, there’s plenty of space for you to pull up a chair. In season, the outdoor beer garden’s raised beds provide produce for the restaurant. Choose from a generous selection of year-round, seasonal, experimental and guest taps to accompany mouthwatering fare that explores familiar flavors with delicious, fresh twists.

Brighten Brewing Co. offers 12 revolving beers and handcrafted cocktails. For a snack, order the Whipped Feta Dip.

Bossy Lady IPA and Touchdown Brown are on tap at HiHO Brewing Co., which makes some of the area’s best pizzas — even options topped with Akron Honey. McArthur’s Brew House hosts bands and food trucks, along with a bourbon bar. Pinball + Beer = Eighty-Three Brewery, where you can nosh on a seasonal flatbread pizza between pints. Summit County’s artisanal brewing scene shines at Hoppin’ Frog Brewery, Missing Falls Brewery and Missing Mountain Brewing Co., where dogs are welcome on the patio.

At Brew Kettle, Royal Docks Brewing Co. and Wadsworth Brewing Co., bring your appetite to pair a delicious pint with an array of dishes from thoughtfully curated menus featuring shareable plates, flatbreads and more, all of which can be enjoyed indoors in the welcoming atmospheres or out on the patios.

Thirsty Dog Brewing Co.’s TapHouse offers 20 rotating draft beers. Rather have wine or a cocktail? No problem. There’s also mead. Or take a short walk to Thirsty Dog Sour Haus for drinks with a tarter taste.

At Ignite Brewing Co., 11% of purchases go toward doing good. Cheers to the seven-barrel brewhouse’s mission. During warmer months, a pet-friendly patio offers a delightful destination to soak up the sun or enjoy an evening sky.

Join the Magic City Brewing Co. “cult.” Why does it brand itself this way? If you want to know, try its Unholy Grounds blonde ale with a Cult Smash Burger made from local beef on a Masoli’s bun with other extras — including Velveeta.

New to the local beer and foodie scene, Richfield Brewing Co. owners dreamed of creating a space for the community to connect and savor finely crafted brews alongside chef-inspired dishes. Stop by for a tasty sandwich, family-style meal or dessert.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AKRON!

As you’re planning your perfect adventure, be on the lookout for ways to help Akron celebrate its bicentennial. That’s right — 2025 is the city’s 200th birthday. To highlight this momentous occasion, mark your calendar for the Akron Bicentennial Celebration taking place the first week of July. This multiday festival, located in downtown Akron, will feature a parade, food, music and more. Also be on the lookout for special events happening on Dec. 6 — Akron’s actual birthday. On that day in 1825, General Simon Perkins filed the plot of Akron at the courthouse in Ravenna.

With a desire to provide programming that would be open and accessible to the public and inclusive and reflective of Akron, the Bicentennial Commission also will offer a series of events taking place throughout the year, including monthly activities to be held in each of Akron’s 24 neighborhoods.

Looking for more ways to blast into the past? The Akron History Center officially opened in April and features 3,000 square feet of exhibits, industry, historic artifacts and pieces from the past. Visitors will learn about Akron’s founding — from the area’s early Indigenous people and the Western Reserve to the history around the Ohio & Erie Canal, Goodyear and the Soap Box Derby.
