Welcome to the 10th Anniversary of the Iron Hill Twilight Race Series Saturday, August 2, 2014, will mark the 10th anniversary of pro racing and family fun in downtown West Chester and we are determined to make it the best ever. As you look through these pages, you’ll notice many new events mixed in with all your favorite attractions. The one thing you can always count on is the unadulterated racing excitement of pro riders from all over the country coming to West Chester to compete in the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium. While putting together this 10th anniversary celebration has been quite a challenge, the rewards to the community make it all worthwhile. Now, 10 years later, the event continues to grow, bringing exciting racing and family fun to downtown West Chester. Noteworthy: • Olympic champion and Lehigh Valley native Marty Nothstein took the honorary first lap to the cheers of the appreciative crowd. Five years earlier, he brought home the Gold in the sprint during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. • 80 top riders from around the world competed in the pro men’s race. After 50 .8-mile laps encompassing four blocks, Joseph Papp took the honors by just a half second in the final sprint. • Attendance was estimated at 7,000.

Noteworthy: • Olympian Bobby Lea, who would return to the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium every year thereafter except 2008 and 2010, made his debut. • In the pro women’s criterium, 25 riders competed with Ashley Kimmet of Allentown taking first in a photo finish that left Erica Allar in second place making it one of the closest finishes in the race’s history. • In the pro men’s race, Stefan Steinweg convincingly won by nearly a minute and a half, 1:29 over Kyle Wamsley. • Special guest Kathy O’Connell, popular host of WXPN’s Kids’ Corner started the Kids’ Race.

Noteworthy: • As darkness descended, a 110 starting field took to the streets for the marquee event, the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium. In front of a crowd estimated at 10,000, Emile Abraham beat out Evan Fader in an exciting two-up sprint. Early on, it appeared certain that the day would belong to Mark Hekman until a crash ended his chance of taking the victory. • Earlier in the day, Laura Van Gilder narrowly edged-out Theresa Cliff-Ryan for her first of three top-three finishes. This race would prove to be one of the most exciting, ending in a photo finish of 10 riders. The official score for everyone in the group was the same: 1:02:04.

After lapping the field, he won by more than 42 seconds over his closest rivals. The battle for second place ended in a photo finish between David Guttenplan and Hekman’s teammate and USA Crits 2007 champion Frank Travieso.

In the final seconds, Barrows kicked it up a notch and outsprinted returning Lea to take the victory by .1 second. • In pro women’s action, New Zealander Lauren Ellis beat out Erica Allar of Tucson, AZ, and Sarah Carevella of Boulder, CO, proving that on this day, the west wasn’t best.

The gap grew rapidly, eventually integrating into the field allowing the riders to rejoin their teammates. After a major crash, the United Healthcare Blue Train delivered Luke Keough to the finish line, winning by one second over teammate Karl Menzies. • In another sports discipline, the Tolsdorf Express Mile attracted regional runners from near and far with Owen Dawson winning the elite mile in 4:06.

Noteworthy: Just as in the previous year, only a .1 of a second separated the winner Joe Schmaltz from runner-up Ben Zawacki for victory. • Nearly as close was the pro women’s criterium, where Erica Allar took the honors, beating Kacey Manderfield by a mere .2

Why cowbells?

West Chester Dental Arts Kids’ Race gives children a taste of competitive racing Children who are psyched to bike will get the chance to feel the thrill of competitive riding in the West Chester Dental Arts Kids’ Race. Friends and families will once again cheer on the children as they franticly pedal their Big Wheels, tricycles and two-wheel bikes toward the finish line. All children between the ages of 3 and 10 are invited to participate in this free event. There will be four categories of races: 3-4 years of age, 5-6 years of age, 7-8 years of age, 9-10 years of age, with race distances determined by age and ability. To participate, all a boy or girl needs are their bike of choice and helmet.

Answer: Because when you clap your hands with gloves on, not much happens. You’re probably confused with that answer because it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with cycling. So let’s time-travel our way back to the 18th century in the mountains of Switzerland. If there’s one thing about the Swiss, it’s the fact that they have always loved their dairy products, so in summertime lots of cows grazed in the valleys and roamed the mountains with bells tied around their neck. After winter set in, these cows were moved to the barns and the bells were hung up. In Switzerland, especially in the 1700s, many of the farmers enjoyed competing with each other in wintertime ski racing events. No one knows who did it first, but legend has it that one day a farmer’s wife told the kids to run to the barn and bring out the cowbells to cheer on dad as he raced his way down a snow-covered slope. And that, dear friends, was all it took. As with any good idea, it was copied throughout the region and has spread around the world. To this day, diehard ski-racing fans stand on the slopes and ring their bells in the tradition of those early Alpine farmers. Throughout the intervening years fans of all sports have taken up the ringing of cowbells to cheer on the athletes, especially in Olympic events. “My grandfather started it (the company) back in 1922,” says Lena Alette Moen Grude, president of Moen Bjollefabrikk. “He began producing bells for his neighbors’ domestic animals and sheep.” Today, the company has changed with the times and also produces GPS tracking devices for livestock, but when the Olympics are in sight, cowbells become the company’s hottest commodity to the tune of nearly 70,000 bells produced in about a two-week period, which was the case for the Salt Lake City games in 2002. Increasingly cycling has become the domain of the cowbell. This is especially the case at criteriums such as the Iron Hill Twilight Race Series, where spectators see the riders race by as many as 60 times per race due to the combination of a short race route and long total distance. One has to admit that if you tried to create the same effect by clapping, you would certainly have a sore pair of hands. On Saturday, August 2, bring on the cowbells and give your hands a break.

Break / Breakaway

An individual or group of riders suddenly riding away from a group of racers or the peloton, quickly enough that opponents cannot keep close enough to draft. When the breakaway consists of one rider, it is called a solo breakaway.

This is what happens to riders that have not been able to keep up with the peloton or riders with whom they are riding. This is usually a result of exhaustion or mechanical failure. They fall behind the pace and can no longer keep up.

Finish Line

To catch a rider or group that has opened a lead.

This is the end of the race. However in cycling, while the finishing order is recorded and the top finisher wins the race, if a group of riders finishes together, they all get the same time. This rule is both for safety to prevent crazy 50-person sprints at the end of a race, not to mention the limitation of timing systems.

These can be very spectacular and sometimes frightening. Bunch sprints occur when a large group approaches the finish line as a group with the same desire to win.

A group of one or more riders that is ahead of the peloton but behind a breakaway. Very often it’s an attempt to bridge the gap and catch the lead group.

Criterium, Crit

A bicycle race, generally around a short loop on city streets.

Drafting

A racing technique of riding behind another rider or group of riders to take advantage of the aerodynamics. Although illegal in triathlons, drafting is key to cycling. Riding behind another can save as much as 30% under perfect conditions. And riding in the middle of a group can save a huge amount. Riders

The amount of time or distance that separates groups or individual riders. The Gap is usually expressed in time. The Gap is closely watched during the race as it grows and shrinks.

Lead Out

When a cyclist sacrifices himself/ herself by riding fast in front of a teammate who positions him/herself in an aerodynamic sweet spot behind a rider to save energy. Just before the finish line, the front rider will pull off to the side allowing the rider behind to race to the finish.

Mechanical

Term used to describe a mechanical problem such as a broken spoke or malfunctioning derailleur.

Off the Back

Term used to describe what happens to a rider who has failed to keep pace and loses contact with the main group.

Term used to describe the action of a rider or group of riders in a

Peloton

The main group of riders in the race.

Prime (pronounced “preem”) A special award given to the leader on selected laps during a criterium.

Pull

To take a turn at the front of a group of riders, yet maintaining the same speed as the rest of the group.

Road Rash

Large abrasions on a rider’s legs, arms or body caused by a crash, primarily on paved roads.

Sitting In

The strategy of a cyclist who doesn’t take their turn at the front of a pace line because of exhaustion, to conserve energy or to slow down the group.

Sitting up

When the rider is no longer tucked, or not riding in the most aerodynamic fashion.

Slipstream

The area of least wind resistance behind the rider in front.

Sprint (mass or field sprint) Sprinting in a large group, often at the end of a race.

Tow

When a rider allows other riders to draft behind.

How to Watch a Criterium One of the best ways for a spectator to appreciate the race strategy as it unfolds is to walk the route in the opposite direction of the race while occasionally stopping at key turns and straight-a-ways. Because bicycle racing is a team sport, pay particular attention to how individual teams work together for the benefit of their top riders. Also note how a rider, when separated from his/her team, will form an alliance with an individual from another team or a group of riders in order to work together for a better placement whether it be to bridge a gap, get back to the peloton or join a breakaway. Of course, these alliances are temporary because once the time is right to make a move, it’s a matter of team effort or every rider for himself. Just make sure to find a good spot at the finish line as the race approaches its conclusion. You wouldn’t want to miss the excitement of all-out sprinting, which climaxes a criterium and determines the top-placing riders.
