After 30 years in graphic design, Cavin decided she wanted to open a gallery featuring affordable, functional art & gifts. “I closed my graphics business because it wasn’t fun anymore,” Cavin said. “My background and de-
gree is in art, and I wanted to get back to that. The Fourth Annual “Fashion for the Cure” and evening of Glitz and Glamour ! “Fashion for the Cure“ will take place on Thursday, May 17th beginning at 7:00pm. The fashion show is a benefit for the Cathy Miller Cancer Fund which supports the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge. The Hope Lodge provides free lodging for cancer patients and their caregivers, creating an environment that eases both the stress of the cancer journey and the financial challenge of receiving life saving treatment. Hope Lodge is a place to share your meals, join in the evening’s activities, or unwind in your own private room. The Cathy Miller Cancer Fund has raised $250,000 in the last five years and has dedicated 4 of the 37 bedroom suites. This year the Fashion Show’s models will be some of our Chamber Members and our very own President, Mark Yoder. In addition to Mark will be Chamber members- Tony Poluch, Jr. Bryn Mawr Trust, and Graceann DiAndrea- Office Depot. Graceann DiAndrea, the Chairperson for the event reports that this years’ show, will be held at the Concord Country Club, Chadds Ford, PA. The event will feature the fresh fashion looks featured by Chamber members and other local merchants - Jane Chalfant, Kaly’s, Englund’s Apparel for Men, Obvi, Nich and the Ski Bum. Peter’s Salon will be doing the hair and makeup. MC’s will be Robert Frame and Liz Hunt. Entertainment will be local students from the Chadds Ford Elementary and Unionville High Schools! In addition to the sizzling fashion creations, a silent auction will be conducted with donations from local restaurants, cosmetic studios, sporting events, and numerous other donors. Writing, Power and Getting There First By Steve Coscia During my first overseas business trip to United Arab Emirates (UAE), I had the pleasure of serving a diverse management team from various Middle-Eastern countries. Prior to the trip, I was concerned about how a foreign audience might interpret my business anecdotes and whether my western ideas would be understood. As it turned out, my client’s service, distribution and logistics issues were identical to those of any American manufacturer and distributor. My preoccupation about whether I would be understood in Dubai was unfounded – they were just like me. The UAE client is a developer and manufacturer of door, window and safety systems. The primary focus of the seminar was world-class service. It was a fun and lively couple of days. During the seminar I shared my own experiences in urging subordinates to write business and technical reports. “Writing is power” was my message to the management team. The power to which I referred boosts subject matter expertise and enables a person to speak with a greater sense of authority and certainty – both of which are audible in a person’s tone of voice. Years ago, as a service manager, I would require that customer service representatives (CSRs) write a 500 word diagnostic report on new technical products. My writing demands were often met with complaints and skepticism. However, the CSRs understood that if they wanted to work on my team, then they had to
meet the agreed –to expectations that had been established when they were hired. There was a method to my “writing is power” madness and the benefit was three-fold. Customers received better service from CSRs who REALLY understood product technical features. Secondly, the CSRs experienced greater job fulfillment, less stress and they earned the respect of their peers as a published writer. Thirdly, I benefitted from fewer escalated calls because the CSRs’ subject matter expertise resulted in greater first-call resolution. My UAE visit coincided with Dubai news stories about safety concerns in their high-rise apartment buildings. Needless-to-say, safety standards for highrise apartment dwellers needed to be reviewed to ensure the public wellbeing. During my Dubai visit, the management team seized the advantage by writing clear and common-sense recommendations for how the UAE could improve building and public safety. More importantly, they were the first industry experts with written recommendations. Even better, their recommendations were published by a UAE construction magazine and this led to greater public awareness and a commitment from the authorities to ensure public safety. Naturally, I was thrilled when my client sent me copies of the articles. Yes, writing is power and being first is a bonus. Estimates and Withholding, Getting it Right Once the tax returns are prepared, phone calls and appointments are made to review the returns and discuss the good news or the bad news. Those who I have spent time with during the year are rarely surprised by the size of the check to be written or the refund received. They are mostly business owners who are accustomed to the ups and downs of the business cycle and are prepared for changes that take place from year to year. For my 1040 clients “the news” can cause some extreme reactions. As accountants we prepare taxes based on transactions that have been completed in the prior year. An unexpected large refund or balance due indicates that you may have benefited from planning. When you receive a large refund you gave the federal government your family’s money to use interest-free all year long. Having to write a large check with short notice can strain the finances and create other tax issues for those who cannot pay the full amount. Once returns are finished, we prepare next year’s estimates based on the returns just completed. Unless we have other knowledge that your income situation will change, our estimates will meet the Internal Revenue Service safe harbor requirements. This is the perfect time of year to meet with your accountant to discuss withholding and estimates for 2012. Now that the filing deadline has passed and the office has settled down to a normal pace, your accountant should have time to help you address any concerns regarding withholding and estimates. I always appreciate the opportunity to plan for changes. You may benefit if any of these situations apply to you. • Your business is growing- Growing businesses can often feel a cash flow strain as revenue increases. Estimate planning can take the sting out of April 15th. • Your income is sporadic- Your accountant can assist you with a spreadsheet to make accurate estimates based on the revenue. This can help prevent overpaying taxes during the year. • Dual wage earners- The standard W-4 will frequently leave dual wage earners with a balance due. An adjustment to the withholding can prevent a balance due return. • Lots of deductions- Those with excess deduc8

Rewarding Your High Performers when 2% Merit Budgets are the Norm By Peter R. Johnson of Peter R. Johnson & Company
We all know that this country and the world have been experiencing rough economic conditions since the Great Depression and, with a few exceptions, businesses, non profits and governmental agencies are struggling. Many organizations have had to enact layoffs, reduced workweeks, pay cuts, pay freezes, and other methods to reduce payroll costs. Those whose situations have permitted, have, on average, granted annual merit increases in the 2% to 4% range; not much reward for high performance. Bonus and Incentive Plans are one of the best and most flexible ways to reward superior performance while maintaining modest base wage and salary growth. These plans can range from simple discretionary allocations based upon the evaluation of contribution impact by Senior Management to plans designed to measure and reward individual or team impact on the key measures of organization performance. Most plans have some general factors in common; impact on financial performance is almost universal to all plans and includes improving sales or revenues and incenting those who find creative ways to reduce cost items. It is very important that plan design be in synch with your organizational culture; is it team or individual performance based, and does it focus on and drive performance in the areas most critical to organizational success? Regardless of the kind of plan chosen, whether discretionary or formalized, the design should be simple and direct and the amount of the reward scaled to the

impact of performance on organizational success. Below is an example of a performance grid which is both simple and adaptable to reflect an organization’s priorities and the payout for this performance level should directly tie in to its specific impact on organization success as well as the level of challenge built into the goals. These charts are intended to be used to set goals and provide a bonus amount that may be available for plan participant. Distributions range from 0% and above. These plans work when you want to reward for performance in “better to good” times and also when attempting to control base wages. Patrons are filling the streets, eager to taste your delicious food or buy your wares. A customer approaches eager to make a purchase. She pulls out her Visa to pay, however you don’t have a phone connection to take her payment. Is the sale lost? Hopefully not! Thanks to the convergence of smart phones, wireless technology and a new line of apps, credit card processing from your iPhone or Droid is now a reality. .Here are two easy options for making credit card processing simple and mobile. 1. The Square App
drop. There are no contracts or commitments required. Because GoPayment is made by Intuit, it also provides integration into Quickbooks. Only a limited number of devices will work with GoPayment’s provided card reader. However, transactions can still be manually keyed into their web app, as long as the device has access to the Internet. An iPhone-specific card is available as well as a compact Bluetooth card reader and receipt printer. Want Hassle-free? Square is about as simple as it can get. There are no set up fees and no contracts. Each credit card transaction has a 2.75% charge if you swipe the card. The card reader and app are free and work with the iPhone/iPad (iOS 4.0+) and some Android devices. Once set up, you can accept the major cards and funds from transactions are sent daily to your registered bank account. Your customers get the option to receive a printed or emailed receipt. You can also set up a virtual point of sale (POS) device. For example, a West Chester waiter with an iPad can touch the picture of the item the customer wants, adding it to their bill automatically. At the end of the meal, the waiter would swipe the customer’s credit card, offer to add a standard tip amount, then hand the card back immediately. This feature makes it easy to monitor trends and summarizations of sales. 2. GoPayment by Intuit Like Square, GoPayment gives you a free card reader that plugs into the audio jack of your mobile device. For accounts with under $1000 in monthly activity, there is no fee and the swipe rate is 2.70% or 3.70% for manually keyed transactions. Letter from our new President continued page 1 After a second “tour of duty” with the Walt Disney Company, my wife Joanne and I had our first son, John. An opportunity presented itself with the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce and we decided to move back to the area. Joanne and I now have two boys, John who is three and Matthew who is just over a year. We are also looking forward to welcoming our third son, due in August. The next several months will present some very exciting opportunities for the Chamber. We are working on a new community and member engagement program called Think, Shop, Buy Local. You will hear much more about this program in the coming weeks. I also encourage you to look at getting involved with our committees, we have several available and it is a great way to connect with other Chamber members and get involved with your community. This is YOUR Chamber and my door is always open for you to ask questions, give us your suggestions, be a resource and help you get the most out of your membership. Cavin also stresses everything is functional and usable, and as the name of the store suggests, she tries to appeal to all five senses. “We sell jewelry, barbeque sauces, candles, leather, glass, fountains, wind chimes and funky metal art…all made in the USA. We strive to sell artfully made items people can actually afford and use.” Including the store, Cavin is active in the WC BID and Chamber, she is also outspoken about the development of downtown West Chester, even recently participating in the Urban Land Institute’s comprehensive study. “If there is not a parking problem then you do not have a successful downtown,” Cavin said. “You’re only a vital town if all your parking is full, and there’s traffic in the street and walking the sidewalks. I think downtown retail development is vitally important to the growth and success of West Chester as a whole.” “I feel that if people are here in the downtown then it’s my job to get them inside my store, buy, return to West Chester and The 5 Senses” Cavin said. The 5 Senses does this by offering people items they can’t find anywhere else. “I’ve always tried to find quality items that I can sell for under $100,” Cavin said. “My customers are not into branding. They’re more individualistic. I believe in complementing the other stores in town, not competing with them. My customers aren’t satisfied with the imported items sold in the big chain stores, they have an appreciation for our artists, and they appreciate art made here in the USA. The Chamber of Commerce of Greater West Chester Education Foundation invites you to attend the Foundations Scholarship Presentation Luncheon on Wednesday, May 30 at 11:45am at the Sheraton Great Valley Hotel. Sponsored by the Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union, the luncheon will feature six students finalist that were chosen to take part in the Chamber’s Education Foundation Scholarship and Mentoring Program. Two of the six students will be awarded $1,000 scholarships from the Foundation, the other four will also receive $400 awards for their participation. In addition to the Scholarship Presentation, the Superintendant of the West Chester Area School District, Dr. Jim Scanlon will speak, addressing attendees with a “State of the School District” update. The Chamber Education Foundation’s goal is to focus on generating scholarships to provide students within our geographic footprint the ability to further develop themselves and their educational opportunities. It is hoped that these scholarships will allow the student to enhance their vocation and stay within our community.
