The school also proudly participates in the annual Chamber of Commerce Gallery Walk and in its Christmas parade.

Evaluating Retirement Plans for the Small Business Owner Too many small business owners overlook the importance of saving for retirement in spite of the fact they are all too aware they will not be able to operate their business indefinitely. After all, none of us is going to work forever, even if it feels like we are doomed to do just that.

So, it is sensible to start planning for retirement, even if you are in your 20’s or 30’s. Naturally, the older you are the more important it is to start saving sooner rather than later.

The good news as a self employed or small business owner, you have options. The IRS recognizes many plans for the self-employed and small business owner and allows noteworthy deposits to your retirement accounts.

Keep in mind, not all plans are right for all investors; you will have to decide which plan or combination of plans is right for you and how much aggravation you are willing to put up with to make the plan work.

The following is a broad overview of some of the available retirement plans:

Simplified Employee Pension (SEP IRA) – I like things that are easy and efficient. For those reasons, and for others, I like SEP-IRA’s.

A SEP-IRA is among the easiest of all retirement accounts to set up.

In fact, these accounts typically require only a single page application.

Deposits in these accounts during 2015 may be as high as $53,000.

This is great news because after all, who doesn’t like a tax deduction.

401(k) Plans – Oftentimes small business owners are not aware they are eligible to open these plans as they believe they are limited to larger businesses. However, there are plans that are called Solo 401(k) or Uni-k which may be a great option for those who are self-employed with no employees. These plans allow you, the small business owner, to contribute matching funds (from your company) as well as funds directly from your earnings. The amounts that may be deposited increase annually and in 2015, those who are self-employed may be able to deposit as much as $53,000. A 401(k) plan allows for more customization than the above mentioned SEP-IRA, and can be designed to meet specific needs. Bottom line, 401(k) plans tend to allow for flexibility.

Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE) – SIMPLE IRA plans, if you ask me, are never that simple; therefore, generally, I am not a big fan of SIMPLE plans for self-employed individuals and small business owners. These plans allow you to put net earnings from self-employment into your retirement in amounts up to $12,500 for the 2015 tax year and if you are over 50, you may be able to contribute higher amounts. These plans can be set up through October of the current tax year to help you defer income and take advantage of the tax benefits of an IRA deposit. A SIMPLE plan offers a few features of the 401(k) plan with significantly less paperwork. The problem of course is they are not nearly as flexible as some of the other plans that are available.

There are other plans available to you if you are self-employed including profit-sharing plans and money purchase plans which can be used by entrepreneurs.

Each of the plans mentioned here have their own advantages and disadvantages and you will have to review those before you make a final decision. Your personal and business goals may impact which plan is best for your specific needs. After all, your retirement plan should be customized to meet your goals. It shouldn’t be a “cookie cutter” approach offered as an “add-on” by a payroll provider.

Call your Accountant First When applying for a Business Loan In January, I was asked to participate on a chamber lunch panel. The topic was How Banks Evaluate Businesses for Credit. It was a great topic. At some point almost all businesses need credit. New businesses need it to get started, established businesses need it to grow and cyclical businesses need it to survive in slow periods or when cash is leaving faster than it is coming in.

Just like consumer credit, there are good and not so good reasons to borrow money. In order to get business credit, you need to convince the lender there is a sound business reason for wanting the money.

You must also demonstrate you have the ability and integrity to pay it back. The area commercial banks have many types of loans and lending opportunities which change frequently. The best way to get the loan you need is to be prepared and your accountant is the perfect person to help you with that task.

Your accountant already understands your business and knows what the bank expects to approve your loan. Your accountant can help you refine your borrowing reason or business plan so that it meets the key factors the bank is looking for in a loan request. Discussing your needs before you go to the bank has many benefits.

Some banks participate in government loan programs that can help a small business obtain a competitive loan. If you apply to Bank A, the loan officer is not going to send you to Bank B because they have a program that is better for you.

It is important that you understand what information the bank will need and how it will be evaluated. Ask your accountant to look at your internal financial reports before submitting them to the bank.

Many times your internal financials and tax returns do not agree.

Your accountant can assist you in making reclassifications or explain to you the reason for the adjustments. It is very difficult to convince a bank that you know your business if you have to submit the same information multiple times because it had to be corrected.

By working with your accountant through the approval process, you can receive timely and relevant advice about how the terms and conditions will affect future cash flow and the impact of conditions such as adjusting rates, pre-payment penalties and the impact of using business or personal assets for collateral.

Your accountant can help your business make smart decisions. Spend the time to take advantage of the advice he or she has to offer.

It is one of the best things you can do to help your business be successful.

You may identify other alternatives to borrowing money or learn that you were not planning to borrow enough money. Accountants have relationships with many banks and can use those relationships to keep you from wasting your time. Each bank has its own underwriting requirements based on its current loan portfolio and experience.

The Top Earning College Degrees

(and How to Make More Even Without One) According to PayScale’s 2014-2015 College Salary Report, the top 10 most-profitable undergraduate majors are: 1. Petroleum engineer 2. Actuarial mathematics 3. So what about the rest of us, who didn’t major in STEM? Are we doomed to make low wages forever?

Of course not. It’s true, some fields pay better than others, but that’s always been the case. There are still plenty of jobs that pay well, and what’s more you can learn to negoti-ate healthier wages, whether it be during the hiring process or once onboard.

Negotiating basics If you don’t ask, you probably won’t get. It would be great to receive an increase in pay without asking just because somebody noticed what a great job you were doing, but that’s not typically the way it goes. People who ask get. Another PayScale survey found that 75 percent of people who ask for a raise get some kind of bump in pay. So first things first. Resolve to make the ask.

Keep the focus on the job and your qualifications to perform it —now and in the future. Your boss won’t be motivated to shell out additional cash because you have bills to pay. Instead, more money will come your way when the boss perceives it’ll be a good investment—not so much in what you’ve done but what you will do for the company going forward. So while it’s fine to remind your manager of your past accomplishments, be sure and emphasize your future, planned contributions as well.

Have a Plan B. If your request for a raise is refused, don’t lose heart.

Perhaps there’s an-other avenue to explore. In lieu of cash, is there a benefit that would make you happy? More paid leave? Work from home? Attendance at a conference? Training? Again, the answer will always be “no” if you never ask the question.

Don’t back your boss into a corner. Nobody likes to be put on the spot, and bosses are no exception. Don’t threaten to quit (even if you plan on it), don’t complain that others are making more, don’t demand anything, and don’t request an instant response. Give your boss time and space to think over your request, which is both respectful and wise.

Your college major is important, that’s a fact, but you don’t have to be a slave to trends. Knowing your worth, and being willing to stand behind it with a little good old fashioned negotiating, will go a long way toward your future earnings potential and your future happiness.

Marketing Mistakes to Avoid

At every level of business, entrepreneurs, business owners and other business leaders are bound to make some mistakes and marketing is no exception. Avoid these common marketing mistakes and you’ll save energy, disappointment and money.

1. Lack of commitment. If you don’t believe in your product or service and you’re not consistent in the way you promote it, your odds of succeeding go way down. As an entrepreneur, it is your responsibility to do whatever it takes to make your product and/or service the best it can be.

5. Not measuring results. Measuring the results of your marketing efforts will allow you to reinvest in those activities yielding a higher return on investment and drop those producing little or no benefits. If you don’t know whether something has worked, why keep throwing money at it?

2. Lack of a clear benefit. As obvious as it may seem, many marketers forget they are in the business of selling something people actually want or need. One of the biggest mistakes made in marketing is to focus on the features of a product or service, instead of the benefits. Your marketing messages must convey the benefits your customers will receive by using your product and/or service. Find the interesting aspects in your offering and state the benefits as believably as possibly.

People do not pay attention to marketing, they pay attention only to things that interest them. Customers simply want to know “so what’s in it for me?”

6. Dedicating your time and resources to one area only.

When your entire marketing budget is used on just one method of promoting your business, you won’t experience the same results as those entrepreneurs who use a mix of vehicles to convey their message. Diversity allows you to expand your marketing reach and stretch your marketing dollars.

3. Not motivating your audience to do something.

To make marketing work, you must tell people exactly what you want them to do. Tell them to make a phone call. If you’re a manufacturer, tell them to visit you online. Ask them to fill in a coupon, write for more information, take a test drive or stop by for a free demonstration. Don’t stop short.

Motivate them to action.

4. Jumping on board every ship that passes your way.

It is important to analyze and plan your promotional efforts before throwing valuable marketing dollars at every opportunity that comes your way. Carefully set objectives, define your target audience (who you really want to get your communication through to) and set your budget over the next six to 12 months.

7. Eliminating marketing during cash flow crunches.

When things get tight, many business owners significantly cut marketing from their budgets, as they are often the easiest expenses to reduce. It is important to remember marketing and sales are the elements driving revenue through the door.

Cut these and your cash flow problems will only worsen.

8. Not getting help when you need it. Sometimes a little outside help can do wonders for an ill-looking brochure or a less than effective ad. To keep costs under control, look to your local resources (marketing/design/print companies – e.g. get BlueDog) for assistance. Most importantly, make sure you’re getting the message out in a manner that accurately reflects your business.

9. Not following up on leads generated by marketing activities. It is important to follow-up with people you meet and sales leads sent your way. Not only is this a common courtesy to those who may have provided the lead, but it is also a necessity. Personal contact should be made by phone, if possible. Don’t just leave a message on a voicemail, keep trying until you reach the potential customer. Implementing a follow up procedure can substantially increase your volume of business, and because following up is so inexpensive the business it produces is very profitable.

Marketing is both an art and a science. No one does it perfectly, but savvy entrepreneurs persist and continuously improve.

Marketing, advertising and promotion are not frivolous or secondary expenditures - they should be included in your overall budget and receive as much attention as your other business functions.
