Me mbe r Spotlight 1 in 30 Children Experience Homelessness Family homelessness exists all across our nation. In Chester County, 24% of single mothers live in poverty, yet an income of $50,000+/year is required to meet the basic needs for a family.

What can we do?

Since 1988, a local faith-based non-profit, Bridge of Hope Lancaster & Chester Counties, has been working to end and prevent homelessness for single mothers and their children. By maintaining relationships with local landlords they help single mothers locate affordable housing.

By providing rental assistance on a diminishing scale mothers and children can move into permanent housing and receive a comprehensive roster of services designed to fully support a mother’s transition from homelessness to independence.

In the earliest days of Bridge of Hope, it was noted that single mothers experiencing homelessness often lacked a support system; people in the community who could help them maintain their housing, their employment and their well being. Therefore, the Bridge of Hope program also matches a group of 8 to 10 volunteer mentors with each participant. These community volunteers come from local congregations, reaching out to Bridge of Hope families in friendship.

One mother describes the difference Bridge of Hope made in her life.

When I look back on one year ago, the realities that make up my daily life now were far off dreams back then. I didn’t have a path, a home, or even a belief that I could legally protect my children. Now we have a home and a strong support system to handle the normal things in life. I have a strength and confidence that I am able to stand up for and protect my kids where they were vulnerable.

Last year, with the help of the local community; businesses, individuals, churches and other organizations, Bridge of Hope Lancaster & Chester Counties helped 28 mothers and 57 children move out of homelessness and on to financial and emotional stability.

3 Stock Option Exercise Strategies You Need to Know Receiving stock options from your employer is great, as it indicates that your company sincerely values you. They want to keep you, and keep you happy! Furthermore, stock options can be a fantastic opportunity to make a lot of money!

However, knowing how to optimize these potentially winning lottery tickets is no easy task. You must consider things like income tax, alternative minimum tax, holding periods, vesting schedules, concentrated equity, valuations, etc. In other words, it’s easy to become overwhelmed.

Instead of being paralyzed by that complexity, you should focus your energy on asking the key questions. These questions are actually quite simple: “How do I feel about my company stock? And how much company stock do I want to hold?”

In my experience, every client answers these questions differently, but their answers all seem to fall under one of these three mentalities: 1. I think the stock is going through the roof. I want to keep as many company shares as possible.

2. I have too much tied up in my company already. I want to sell my stock as soon as possible and diversify.

3. I want the best of both worlds. Let’s keep some shares, and diversify the others.

Keep as many shares as possible – Big risk, big reward You have to bet big to win big. For some, betting big on company stock ownership is a risk that they are willing to take.

By following this strategy, the employee will accumulate and hold as many shares of company stock as possible. The singular goal is to obtain, maintain, and concentrate a large portion of one’s net worth in the company stock.

If the company stock price goes up, then the employee will be a big winner! If, however, the company stock goes down, then the employee could lose big. Potentially very big!

Keep zero shares – Treat it as compensation Many employees who receive company stock or stock options decide to treat those shares as compensation. This means that the employee will sell their shares of the company stock as soon as possible (immediately upon vesting), reinvesting the proceeds into a diversified portfolio.

By following this strategy, the employee will make no attempt to be tax efficient, time the market, and/or play other investment “games.” The goal is simple – to sell the company stock as soon as possible in order to diversify and reinvest elsewhere. Quite simply, this strategy means you have no interest in holding the stock.

Keep some shares – I’ll dip my toes The most common strategy that I see employees choose is “somewhere in the middle”.

Employees frequently choose to retain some company stock “just in case” the share price skyrockets. Who wants to be the only employee at the water cooler holding zero shares, with no one to high five, when the company quadruples in value?

On the other hand, these employees also don’t want to be left out to dry.

The stock price could go down. By holding too much stock, you put yourself at risk to lose a lot of money should the company fail.

Next Steps Before you find yourself digging too deep into the details of discussing the alternative minimum tax, 83(b) elections, and the differences between incentive stock options and non-qualified stock options, take a step back and a deep breath.

Take some time and review your goals. Is your goal to keep as much company stock as possible, knowing that you can lose it all? Or is your goal to get rid of it all right away?

Once you determine your goal, you can begin to develop an effective strategy to accomplish that objective in the most efficient way possible.

Downsizing Your Records

I have spent the last several weeks helping my parents prepare to move to a smaller home. Their current home has too much of everything and there are a lot of decisions to be made about the fate of the contents that will not be needed in their new home.

I am very fortunate to have five brothers and sisters to share in the job to be done. As we sort through the contents, my parents easily decide, what to take with them, what to give to children or grandchildren and what to donate or discard.

M edical Records

As the oldest child and family accountant I am sorting through the decades of their paper trail and need to decide what is important to keep and how things should be disposed of in this era of identity theft. When choosing what to keep, I considered who may need the information in the future.

I chose to keep two years of statements. The rest will be securely disposed.

Seven to ten years should be sufficient. However, many tax files contain historical basis information that may be needed when long term assets are sold. I decided to keep them all.

I n ve s tme n t Statements My parents have held a variety of stocks, investments, 401k’s and IRA’s. I chose to sort into piles for each investment and keep the last two annual statements for each. Even though I have been preparing their tax returns since I graduated from college, the sorting by account will make sure that I find a complete inventory of their investments. Papers not kept, will be disposed of securely.

I kept documents with test results, general medical history and information on open claims. Everything else will be securely disposed.

Wills, trusts, marriage and birth certificates will be kept. I also kept deeds and satisfied mortgages. These may be needed to settle the estates.

School Records Six children can generate a massive amount of school records.

Awards, report cards, art work and applications. Because many of these items may contain personal information, I put them all in the pile to be disposed of securely or given to family members.

I know my parents are looking forward to living in a smaller space and I appreciate the value of being able to review their papers with them. It is a great opportunity to discuss any questions I have or learn more about what they want in their future.

An amazing collection of progress and technology. The goal is to keep receipts for large household improvements that may be needed when the house is listed for sale. The new owners will appreciate the manuals for large appliances and mechanical systems. Everything else is headed to the dumpster. Most owner’s manuals can be easily reproduced with a Google search.

Looking Through

Green Colored Glasses Being a “green” business is not only good for the environment; it can also contribute to a company’s bottom line and create competitive advantage. A look through green-colored glasses typically results in identifying new ways to decrease utility costs, minimize (or eliminate) waste, and provide added value to customers.

It can also provide new marketing angles, minimize negative environmental and social impacts and reduce risks. Not being green can be more expensive than one might imagine.

So what steps you take to embark on their green journey, in a way that effectively utilizes your limited resources of time and money?

3. Assess options to see where the company might achieve the highest returns on its investment. There’s nothing wrong with looking for low hanging fruit! Early successes also improve buy-in within the company and generate savings that can be reinvested into ongoing efforts.

4. Regularly track and review your progress on objectives and projects (monthly is ideal), in order to share best practices, overcome roadblocks and promote accountability.

Business owners should not be intimidated about embarking on the path toward a greener business. Going green is just another way of looking at your business, and can lead to increased revenues, higher profits, decreased risk and a more engaged workforce.

1. Perform a high level assessment of your company’s environmental and social impacts, identifying key areas that provide opportunities for improvement.

2. Similar to your company plan, create a green/ sustainability plan with a vision for the future, strategies for attaining that vision, measurable objectives, and specific projects that will make the greatest impact.

How To Handle Investment Risk After six years of positive market gains, many investors are concerned about market risk in their investments and cannot afford to lose half of their money in another bear market. With interest rates at historically low levels, it is difficult, if not impossible to find “safe” investments that are yielding more than inflation. So, how do investors allocate their investments to meet their goals and objectives, while handling the risk of those investments?

Wall Street defines risk as the mathematical formula below called Standard Deviation.

In layman’s terms Standard Deviation is a measure of a portfolio’s variance or volatility. So, according to Wall Street, more “variance” in a portfolio’s returns means more investment risk.

Most people have never heard of Standard Deviation, except as some awful equation they had to lean in their college statistics class. Most investors think about risk as the possibility of loss in order to achieve a potential gain. For the average investor, the risk of losing capital is far more important than their portfolio’s Standard Deviation.

So how does an investor deal with investment risk? Here are four ways that you can think about and handle risk in your investments.

1. Avoid Risk - Conservative investors try to avoid market risk by investing in low-risk securities like money markets, CDs and short-term bonds. The problem today with this strategy is that low-risk securities have historically low returns and pursuing this strategy can subject investors to a different type of risk, inflation risk. This is the risk that their investments will not keep pace with inflation.

2. Accept Risk - Using this strategy an investor will accept a certain amount of market risk for their portfolio, knowing that a portion of their investments may lose significant value in a down market. For example, you may be comfortable exposing 40% of your portfolio to market risk and holding 40% of your investments in stocks at all times. The challenge with this strategy is that your portfolio will have muted returns in a good market and it will lose money in a down market.

3. Transfer Risk - Let’s say you have decided that to reach your investment goals you need to allocate 60% of your investments to stocks but are not comfortable with bearing that much market risk. You can put your money into fixed or variable annuities and “transfer” the market risk to an insurance company. You no longer bear the market risk because the insurance company offering the annuity is now bearing that risk. While this is an appealing strategy to some investors, annuities can be complicated products with fees as high as 4-5% annually. So it is vital to understand not only the benefits of the annuity but also the fees and expenses.

4. Manage Risk - This is where proper strategic allocation and tactical management can be employed to maximize returns while minimizing risk using both offensive and defensive strategies.

A seasoned investment professional can use strategic allocation to capture growth in a rising market and use tactical strategies to minimize risk during a declining market. The objective is to achieve superior risk-adjusted returns over time by protecting capital in down markets.

An Update from Harrisburg:

Sales Tax Expansion In March Governor Tom Wolf gave his budget address proposing a raise in the sales tax from 6 percent to 6.6 percent. Not only will the sales tax increase, but it will also be expanding to other professional services.

This expansion would include services such as child care, nursing homes, and legal services just to name a few. It has become a concern that with taxes being put on to these services that it would discourage people from using them all together, therefore bringing in less revenue than is expected. One could argue that the sales tax expansion would most harshly hurt the middle class, the same group of people who put Wolf in office, in hopes of receiving help from him.

This issue also greatly affects the south-eastern part of the state.

If the expansion is adopted it might encourage Pennsylvanian’s in this region to cross the border and indulge in tax free shopping in our neighboring state Delaware, and therefore hurting Pennsylvania businesses.

The sales tax expansion is not getting much support from either side of the aisle, so it will be somewhat of a miracle if the budget is passed on time.

In other states where professional services have been taxed the tax has been repelled very quickly due to its failure. While the Governor’s intentions are good, this may not be the best way to help the already struggling middle class.
