Dear Borough Council Member, The Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce supports the Walnut and Gay Street hotel project presented to Borough Council. Adding the proposed hotel to our existing hotels will establish a healthy core hotel industry within the Borough with an economic impact in excess of $30 million. The proposed establishment estimates a creation of 35 full time and 25 part time jobs. The hotel will enhance the existing charm of West Chester by transforming a vacated building into a desirable destination and attract additional visitors to downtown West Chester. Additionally, with the addition of a second hotel our Borough will finally have enough available rooms to accommodate small conferences. If the hotels work in tandem with places like Uptown!, the Historical Society, and West Chester University to provide meeting space they will be able to host industry groups in our charming downtown. We respectfully request the West Chester Borough Council to work with the developer to permit a viable hotel project.

The GWCC Participates in Annual Chamber Day With the state budget deadline quickly approaching and the General Election right around the corner, more than 100 state and local chamber representatives from across the Commonwealth gathered in Harrisburg today for the 2018 Chamber Day at the State Capitol. The annual event, which is co-hosted by the PA Chamber of Business and Industry and the Pennsylvania Association of Chamber Professionals, provides a forum for constructive dialogue between local chamber officers and key policymakers on key issues important to the state’s business community and the best ways to improve the Commonwealth’s business climate. “It was an honor to spend time with our elected officials and discuss the current state of the commonwealth”, said Mark Yoder, President and CEO of the Greater West Chester Chamber, “learning how we can work together to make Pennsylvania a great place to do business, is another example of the advocacy we are providing for our members.” Participants met with several elected officials throughout the day; including: Senate Pro Tempore Joseph Scarnati,

R-Jefferson; Speaker of the House Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny; House Appropriations Majority Chairman Stan Saylor, R-York; and Democratic Chairman Joseph Markosek, D-Allegheny. The keynote luncheon speaker was Republican Gubernatorial candidate and former state Sen. Scott Wagner. The event also featured policy discussions on a variety of critical topics, including: the upcoming 2018-19 state budget, the state’s opioid epidemic, workforce development, federal issues that impact employers, as well as the upcoming 2018 General Election. The Options are Endless in Today’s Dessert Foodie World You are in charge of providing a dessert for your event such as a wedding, corporate party, graduation party, shower or a birthday and, of course, you want to impress your guests. Here are some trending dessert ideas for 2018. • Feature a custom cake that has less servings but is a presentation piece and then offer an assortment of mini desserts to go alongside that cake on a dessert table. Mini desserts such as tartlets, pies, mousse cups, cheesecakes or cannolis are appropriate. • Find a dessert that has sentimental meaning to you and your family (i.e.; that Italian Rum Cake that your grandmother used to make).

Find a baker that is willing to work with you on family recipes and have that cake or dessert featured on your dessert table. • Make sure you are aware of your guests with dietary restrictions/allergies and offer a small assortment of Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free or some other food-sensitive mini desserts for them. • Prepare a display for your cake/dessert table such as different plates, cake stands, etc. Arranging desserts and a cake on a table that has height, color and textures will impress your guests. Working with a bakery that is able to incorporate

all of these options can be beneficial because they can tie in the theme with colors, proportions, etc. and bring that “Wow!” factor, plus every guest will be happy. Finally, set a budget and communicate that to the bakery. This helps the bakery to create a dessert that meets (or beats) your expectations. New York and Atlantic City follow West Chester’s lead in the fast and furious world of US CRITS bike racing

Over the years, criterium bike racing has thrived in the Mid-Atlantic states. Some of the greatest examples of the genre have taken place there. So, it’s not surprising that there will be three fullthrottled criteriums in the region this year as part of the 11-race USA CRITS Championship Series: Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic in NYC on June 15, Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic in West Chester, PA on August 11, and the series finals at The Resurgence in Atlantic City, NJ on September 15. Maybe it’s the speed, the rush of the wind, and the whirl of wheels. Maybe it’s the boisterous announcers, the intense music, and the ringing of cow bells. Maybe it’s the crashes, the sprints, and the amped-up visceral magic of bike racing. Maybe it’s because it’s so American. Whatever it is, it’s real, it’s crazy, and it’s the most unadulterated form of speed cycling known to humankind. Thousands of spectators throughout the PhiladelphiaNew York metroplex will be geared up for this unique form of American-style bike racing. “We are really excited to have three great venues on tap for this year’s USA CRITS Championship Series right in the middle of the East Coast Metroplex,” commented Gene Dixon, President of Swagger, LLC, producer of the series. “Each venue is renowned for the criterium racing legacy: challenging courses that showcase arts and entertainment with broad community support.” Having been part of the USA CRITS series since its inception in 2006, the Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic is one of the original criteriums in the series, while the Harlem/NYC and Atlantic City races are new to the USA CRITS race calendar this year. All three venues are within 120 miles of each other so avid followers of the sport can see all three. Now in its 45th year, The ColavitaBialetti Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic in New York City can boast of not only being the oldest of the three MidAtlantic races, but of the whole USA

CRITS Championship Series, having been founded in 1973 by a former New York police officer. Co-sponsored by an Italian extra-virgin olive oil company and an Italian cookware manufacturer, the race is routed around Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park between 120th and 124th streets. Sponsored by the Benchmark Federal Credit Union, the Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic is the last MidAtlantic Race before the finals. West Chester Dental Arts Kids’ Race continues to attract children and families to the Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic

Hundreds of young cyclists will enjoy some of the same emotions that the pros feel when they descend on the streets of downtown West Chester in the West Chester Dental Arts Kids’ Race. This popular event will kick off this year’s Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at 3:30 p.m. “It’s so much fun watching kids pedal furiously to the cheers of family, friends and all the spectators that line Gay Street. No wonder that the kids enjoy it so much,” said Mark Yoder, President of the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic. All children between the ages of 3 and 10 are invited to participate in this free event. There will be four age-determined categories of races: 3-4 years of age, 5-6 years of age, 7-8 years of age, 9-10 years of age. Every child will finish with honors and an official Race Day medal. The kids’

race sponsor, West Chester Dental Arts, will also present a special T-shirt to all participants. “We’re beyond excited to sponsor the kids’ race for the 9th consecutive year,” says Dr. Eric Fort of West Chester Dental Arts. “Our staff looks forward to this event every year. It’s such an amazing opportunity for us to meet all the new members of the community and reconnect with old friends.” Of course, all riders will be required to wear a helmet. Parents must register their children between 2:45 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. at the registration booth on West Gay Street between Church and New Streets. To expedite the registration process, it is requested that the form be downloaded from the race website and filled out in at advance. At the end of the race, children will arrive in the Kids’ Zone, located on Gay Street between High and Walnut Streets

Other family-oriented attractions include the Community Festival on High Street that will offer a cornucopia of booths filled with all the latest must-haves, food choices and a party-like ambiance. After the West Chester Dental Arts Kids’ Race, the spotlight shifts to the Tolsdorf Twilight Trike Challenge, the popular tag-team race that pits 5-member teams against each other on adult-size tricycles. This series of hot-handed, coldblooded heats takes place on Gay Street. The Rothman Institute Amateur Criterium will take place at 5:45 p.m., followed by two key professional bike races: the 40K Brumbaugh Wealth Management Pro Women’s Criterium at 6:45 p.m. and the 75K Iron Hill Pro Men’s Criterium. Business Program Excites Local Students nearly 2,200 students on the campuses of Lycoming College and the Pennsylvania College of Technology, both located in Williamsport, PA.

There is an award-winning summer program that since 1979 has been exciting the imaginations of high school students throughout Pennsylvania about the world of business and private enterprise. That program, Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW), will be marking its 40th storied year this July and August. PFEW was founded specifically to teach rising high school juniors and seniors about the American private enterprise system and what it means to our country. PFEW now annually holds five sessions in July and August, serving

The focus of each session is to group the participants into management teams of junior executives who have inherited underperforming imaginary companies. These teams, under the guiding hands of volunteer “executives-on-loan” called Company Advisors, operate their firms for a computer simulated three-year period of time. They work with balance sheets, statements of income, marketing and advertising concepts, etc., and must react to a variety of external factors as well. Sound familiar? The Chamber is proud to support PFEW and

encourages our local companies and civic organizations to provide sponsorship for our students and, if possible, volunteers for the sessions. Every student attends PFEW on a fully tax-deductible $575 scholarship (the actual value of the scholarship is about $1,500) which is provided by a local firm, foundation, civic organization, or individual. PFEW is also an approved Educational Improvement Organization through the PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. Each student wears the name of their sponsor throughout the week and writes them after graduation to report on what they have learned.
