The Spring Gallery Walk was a double success in both rain and shine!

Motivation – in Hiring and Achieving Goals

Now in its 22nd year, the tradition remains an integral part of the downtown scenery. The event, held the first Friday in June and October, provides the perfect opportunity to experience the historic borough’s blend of urban sophistication and small town ambience. Each event welcomes an estimated 2,500 visitors, many of whom return again and again to enjoy all the town has to offer in the way of art, dining and shopping.

One of the issues that rears its head time and again with clients is the issue of motivation and how it factors into just about everything we do– from hiring people to getting things done. It is an indisputable aspect of success and yet one of the most difficult qualities to assess or to maintain. Let’s take hiring, for example.

I’ve done a lot of it over years and if I’ve learned one thing it is this: you have to start by hiring the right people, and you cannot, cannot, CANNOT supply motivation. It is not a commodity you can lend, nor should you, so you have to make sure it’s a quality the candidate already brings to the table by screening for it in the hiring process.

Also ask about prior work experience (look for a hard worker who got promoted a lot), ask about interests outside of work (motivated people are motivated not just about work, but about life!). Motivation is related to resiliency (you want someone who stays focused despite the inevitable obstacles.)

Motivation and Hiring

Maintain your focus on goal-directed actions. Every great task is accomplished through a series of small steps, so write down not only your goal–make it proximal, specific and challenging–but why achieving that goal is important to you. Subdivide your goal into specific short term goals/steps with timeframes for completion.

And make your goals challenging. Otherwise, they’re neither interesting, nor will you accomplish them. Keep an eye on the ‘why’ in the equation because when you’re up to your ass in alligators, you want to remember not only that your primary job is to drain the swamp, but also why risking your ass is worth it.

I can hear some of you thinking you may know better, and maybe you do, but I haven’t seen supplying motivation work—ever—so based on that, here are a few questions I use to get to the heart of the motivation issue, and they’re helpful during any hiring process regardless of the position you have to fill. Of course, you also have to know what you’re listening for, and that’s a bigger conversation than space allows, but this gets you started:

Motivation and Accomplishing Long Term Goals It’s ridiculous how easy it is to lose focus when attempting to accomplish goals, especially long term goals, so here’s the short-list on making meaningful progress:

Control your emotions. Failure is part of the equation, so use it as a learning experience rather than a setback. Time and again I see clients caught up in the emotion of the failure and then paralyzed by doubt, anger, and more. Waste of time. Don’t get caught up in any of them. Accept the failure and move on. Sure, get mad, get frustrated and then get over it and look at why the failure happened. Be honest. Then fix the problem.

Pace yourself. Don’t try to get too much done too fast. Artificial deadlines are a breeding ground for mistakes. So control what you can in terms of timeframe, because there will be plenty of things you can’t control during the process. And don’t burn yourself or your staff out too early. Be realistic, but not afraid to push periodically or when necessary.

Celebrate. Brag about it, take some time to yourself, work out, buy something you always wanted. Whatever works.

Celebrate the milestones… then aim for the next one.

Rest, replenish, and then repeat.

The Importance of Being Different (Part 1)

What is Differentiation Marketing?

None of this happens if your customer can’t distinguish you from your competition. Differentiation is key to any successful marketing program, because it is what gives your customer an understanding of your unique personality and a reason to remember you when it is time to buy. It gives your customer the special reason they are looking for to buy from you.

Positively different makes the perception of your product better.

Simply stated, it means that you are perceived differently, in a positive way, from your competition.

Let’s take the product that was selling only on price and add Differentiation Marketing.

Is Differentiation Marketing the next great marketing idea or is it simply the latest new buzzword?

Whatever it is, it’s the reason why Apple Computer used “Think Different,” in their marketing and Dodge claimed to be “Dodge Different.”

A typical reaction might be to say, “I don’t need to differentiate.

All I need is to give my client a quality product at a low price and that will do the job.” The fact is, that on one level, that is differentiation. You are setting your product apart by selling it for a lower price than your competition.

But why minimize revenues and profits when it’s not necessary?

Selling at a reduced price doesn’t take full advantage of everything differentiation has to offer. Differentiation Marketing affords you the ability to sell on many levels and achieve all of your marketing goals. People will pay a premium for a preferred brand and selling on price alone does little to establish brand preference.

Department stores do this all the time. Otherwise, Bloomingdales wouldn’t be able to sell the same name-brand clothes for twice the price as Marshall’s. By selling a product or service that is similar to your competition’s on price alone, you’ve left little else on which your customer can make a buying decision.

Differentiation Marketing has four major goals: • Build brand preference • Position your company as a leader in your market • Create product/service awareness

Develop a unique corporate identity with concept driven capabilities and product brochures and you start to build brand preference and position your company as a leader.

Develop ads that not only promote economy, but unique features, benefits and quality manufacturing and you begin to build product awareness. Design a high-end identity and package, and all of a sudden, you have raised the perceived value of that product. Follow through by delivering what you promised, when you promised and you build customer loyalty. The difference between this and a typical marketing program is that with every effort you do everything you can to distinguish yourself.

In business to business marketing, differentiation is the process of positioning a company, product or service to avoid confusion with a similar company, product or service. To be different, you need to try new approaches, approaches never before attempted.

This involves taking risks, not doing the same things that your competition does. Differentiation Marketing works when brands and products are remembered and purchased.

Small Employers Need to Plan for Changes Under the Affordable Care Act The Affordable Care Act was passed into law in March of 2010.

Since that time there have been many attempts to alter, delay and repeal the implementation of the act. The acts itself has over 400,000 words and has turned into an administrative nightmare for those responsible for compliance. Large corporations have had the time and resources to adequately plan how to best incorporate the requirements within their company. News organizations report daily that chains employing low skilled workers are cutting hours or have calculated that it is less expensive to pay fines related to not providing adequate coverage.

Small business owners have a more difficult time and will be forced to make decisions that will affect their businesses and the quality of their employees’ lives.

Employers with less than 50 employees will be exempt from most of the regulations including the requirement to provide any employer subsidized plan.

The cost of health insurance premiums are expected to increase 25 to 30% in the next renewal cycle. This is due to the continuing increases in health care costs, the removal of refusals for preexisting conditions and mandatory premium refunds to groups with low usage. This may force exempt employers to reduce or cancel group coverage due to affordability.

Employers who have many part time or seasonal workers can be caught off guard since the definition of who is a full time employee has been reduced. Under the provisions companies under common control must be treated as a single entity.

It is important to take the time to understand how your business is affected by the act. Take the time to contact your payroll company, benefits provider and accountant. Find out what resources they have in place to assist you with compliance and cost containment. Proper planning will allow you to shop for options, incorporate any changes that may need to be made to your pricing structures and allow for input from key employees.

Make sure any changes that need to be made are communicated early and clearly to your employees.

Politics and legislation will continue to shape specific elements and timing, but the trajectory of health reform is unlikely to change and the momentum is not likely to disappear and the potential impacts to your business are serious.

Larger business will be required to monitor employee hours and prepare periodic testing to determine requirements under various regulations.

While this town has changed drastically over the last fifteen years, some places still feel like home. This is the feeling that sweeps over you when you walk into DeStarrs restaurant on 112 East Gay Street. In existence since 1935, DeStarrs has seen a lot of restaurants come and go, but theirs has been passed down from generationally. Arriving from Greece in 1951, Bill Stravropoulos has operated this family run business on a daily basis.

Along with his son Steve, DeStarrs has maintained a constant presence in West Chester. His loyalty to his customers and community is the same as his family and it is reflected in his attitude. A warm smile and hearty laugh served with your favorite dish.

We decided to visit Bill one early Friday morning for Breakfast. Upon arriving, Bill was prepping for the upcoming day which includes lunch and dinner. Along with the prep, Bill was finalizing his legendary Creamed Chipped Beef which he serves only on Friday and Saturdays. Bill greets every customer that walks in and knows all of their personalities and backgrounds. Everything from classic greek sayings to quirky jokes are shared by Bill at the counter and the surrounding tables. When we asked Bill what he plans to do when he retires and he said; “I heard that word once, but don’t know what it means. As long as the good lord gives me health. I’ll be here.”

GWCC’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) status renewed for 2013 - 2014
