As the Director of SAM, it always gives me great pleasure to discuss the treasures we hold in the SAM collection. As a community we have been building this significant gathering of works for over 80 years, and today our ceramics collection is one of the most significant in regional Australia.
Collecting as an art form will be in focus at SAM over these Summer months as we display our current exhibition Collector/ Collected. We explore the art of collecting, what we collect and the reasons behind why we all collect – either as hobby or more seriously – in this thought-provoking show. We are delighted to be working with Deakin University Art Gallery and John Nixon to present such breadth of work.
Many of you will be familiar with the TV show, the Antiques Roadshow, and the treasures that often appear. As part of Collector/Collected, we are excited to be welcoming our colleagues from Leonard Joel Auctions to delve into our community’s collections, and the wonders that may appear. So if you have a piece you have often wondered about, be sure to register your interest in a valuation on the SAM website.
In March, SAM once again goes local and we look forward to highlighting the creative makers and artists from our region. SAM Local Spotlight provides a unique opportunity for a local artist to exhibit a body of work at the museum, working with the SAM team to gain valuable
experience working in a professional gallery environment. An announcement on our 2020 artist will be made soon.
Another highlight of SAM Local in March will be the popular Best of Friends exhibition, which encourages Friends of SAM to submit art work for display in this open access exhibition. Head to the SAM website to become a Friend of SAM and download an application form.
A big part of what we do at SAM is around the engagement of our local community. We run many events and workshops for all ages, many low cost or free, designed to inspire and inform. The holiday months present a great time to get involved with these activities, as we have a chance to unwind and get creative. Workshops also make for great gifts!
I hope you and your visitors find some time over the coming months to drop into the museum and view our nationally recognised, free exhibitions.

Collector/Collected is an exhibition in three parts. It showcases two major collections of Australian studio pottery from the 1960s and 70s: Studio Pottery from the John Nixon Collection, presented alongside SAM’s own collection from this period.
Together with these collections, four contemporary artists’ responses will be presented, all exploring aspects of collections and why we collect: Tony Albert, Kate Daw, Geoff Newton and David Sequeira.
Studio Pottery from the John Nixon Collection was conceived and presented at Deakin University in 2018 by curator James Lynch.

The Boyd Family: A Legacy of Pottery, is a SAM curated exhibition showcasing many of the over 140 ceramics works by the extended Boyd family from the SAM Collection. Celebrating decoration, the domestic and the every-day, these works reveal the way in which art and design intersected for the Boyd family, and the influences and inspirations that crossed art, architecture, literature and life.

A Finer Grain: Selected Works from the SAM Collection is an exhibition presenting key and lesser-known works by Australian women artists from the SAM collection.
A Finer Grain looks at works by female artists selected from the SAM collection over 83 years of institutional collecting.
Through a chronological approach we see the development of the collection, from the first work acquired by a female artist through to the strength of the representation of Australian women artists in SAM’s collection today.

The Drawing Wall is an ongoing series of commissioned, temporary, site-specific wall-based drawings or installations enlivening the foyer space of Riverlinks Eastbank directly outside SAM. Each year, artists are commissioned to produce new work across the 4 X 12m space.

SAM Spotlight
After the success of previous years SAM again goes local in March, spotlighting creative practice from the region. SAM Local Spotlight is an opportunity for an artist to exhibit a body of work at SAM. It is an exciting, profile-raising exhibition for a regional artist. The aim of the show is to encourage, stimulate and promote local and regional cultural activities as part of SAM’s annual program.

SAM Best of Friends
Best of Friends is an open access exhibition and all Friends of SAM are encouraged to submit work. This exhibition opens a window into the creative practice of many artists working in a range of media in the Goulburn Valley, providing insight into the regional arts sector.

SAM eduLAB
Supported by La Trobe University
SAM’s edu LAB provides a diverse range of students and teachers with the opportunity to work directly with an artist to create an immersive installation within SAM. Directed at school kids of all ages, SAM’s edu LAB caters to a wide demographic. The SAM 2020 eduLAB is an evolving exhibition that sees a range of schools and educational groups work with an artist to transform the gallery on a weekly basis. Students’ work will remain on display over six weeks, providing them with the opportunity to see their work exhibited at SAM. For more information, see the Education page on the SAM website.

The shop stocks work by a number of local and interstate artists and collectives including Sharon Murray, Kim Wallace, Marmoset Found, Martha Jean and Tiff. It features a curated selection of Australian craft and design while supporting some of the region’s best artistic talent. The shop also stocks a range of publications, including SAM exhibition catalogues, books on art and Australian ceramics, plus a range of art magazines.

For Schools
We welcome kindergarten, primary, secondary and tertiary groups to participate in both self-guided and guided tours, activities and workshops at SAM.
All SAM education tours are free but we require all school groups to book in at least one week in advance.
Tours, Activities and Workshops for Schools
Educator led tours: Free educator led tours highlight aspects of the SAM collection and changing exhibition program. The purpose of these tours is to engage and empower students through positive museum experiences and we are happy to collaborate with teachers around specific learning outcomes.
Self-guided: Self-guided exhibition tours are always welcome and can be further enhanced by our education resources. Younger students must be accompanied by a teacher at all times.
Educator led activities:
Let’s Talk: Art VCE Analytical Frameworks
Students will discuss and be guided through the use of the VCE Art Analytical Frameworks in response to key artworks in the SAM Collection and exhibition program.
Let’s Talk: Visual Language
Using the SAM Collection, students will build their art specific vocabulary through the analysis and discussion of highlighted artworks.
Let’s Talk: Art Industry Contexts
Using a SAM exhibition, students will learn about the processes involved in preparing, presenting, conserving and promoting art and exhibitions in a public art museum.
Workshops:
Let’s Create: Ceramic Handbuilding
Designed in collaboration with the classroom teacher, students will create a small ceramic piece that will use traditional handbuilding techniques.
$5 per student (inclusive of materials and firing).
For Students
SAM Scholars
The SAM Scholars program is designed to complement both the Visual Communication Design and VCE Studio Art study design.
Utilising the SAM Education workshop space and galleries, students will engage in both practical art/design classes and lectures specifically designed to further develop their understanding of design, studio art practice, material, techniques and visual literacy skills.
