It seems the year is moving fast as to date we have seen three exhibitions at SAM and have recently opened the fourth for the year. The Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award exhibition opened on 22 June and presents outstanding work by six Australian artists. The winner of the $50,000 aquisitive prize, Lynda Draper, has her work on display along with the other shortlised applicants until 1 September. Drop in and take a look at the diversity of artworks by Greg Daly, Julie Bartholomew, Stephen Bird, Juz Kitson, Isadora Vaughan and Lynda Draper.
In September, SAM will present our fifth exhibition for the year that celebrates the legacy of the Boyd family. The twopart exhibition features a Bundanon Trust touring exhibition, Arthur Boyd: Landscape of the Soul , which explores a lifetime of landscape painting; and an exhibition curated from the SAM Collection titled The Boyd Family: A L egacy of P ottery. Together these exhibitions present some of the most seminal works from one of Australia’s best known artistic families.

A Bundanon Trust Touring Exhibition
Alongside Arthur Boyd: Landscape of the Soul, SAM presents The Boyd Family: a legacy of pottery, an exhibition showcasing over 140 ceramic works by the extended Boyd family from the SAM Collection. Celebrating decoration, the domestic and the every-day, these works reveal the way in which art and design intersected for the Boyd family, and the influences and inspirations that crossed art, architecture, literature and life.

A finer grain: selected works from the SAM collection is an exhibition presenting key and lesser-known works by Australian women artists from the SAM Collection.
Spanning the full breadth of SAM’s 83 year collection history, we have taken a chronological approach, loosely grouped by decade from the date of creation. Artworks span a range of medium and subject, and showcase the breadth of SAM’s focus in works on paper, painting, and Australian ceramics. This approach offers insights into SAM’s Collection and the history of its development.
The development of SAM’s contemporary collection reflects the many themes and ideas that artists explore in new and exciting ways. Ceramics remains core and a point of regional difference. There are, of course, always surprises and discoveries: a survey collection exhibition of this kind ensures that overlooked and sometimes forgotten or unfashionable artists and artworks are also celebrated.

About the Award
The Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award (SMFACA) is widely recognised as Australia’s most significant ceramic award. Since 1991, this Award has consistently attracted outstanding artists working in ceramics. Every two years this acquisitive prize, valued at $50,000, sees innovative new work in the ceramics field enter the SAM Collection.
The SMFACA celebrates and promotes contemporary Australian artists working in the ceramic medium. With ceramics increasingly adopted by a number of emerging and established contemporary artists, as recent exhibitions nationally and internationally have highlighted, the possibilities for the medium have significantly expanded.

The Drawing Wall is an ongoing series of commissioned, temporary, site-specific wall-based drawings or installations enlivening the foyer space of the Riverlinks Eastbank Centre directly outside SAM. Each year, artists are commissioned to produce new work across the 4 x 12m space.

Experimenta Ceramics Workshop
Taking inspiration from the artworks in the 2019 Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award, participants will work independently and create an original body of work, with the support and expertise of Moroopna ceramicist Kaye Poulton. This workshop is suitable for individuals with prior clay handbuilding experience. All materials and firing included.

Amoebic Planter Workshop
With artist Zhu Ohmu
Create your own amoebic pinch pot planter to take home in this workshop led by ceramicist Zhu Ohmu. Using hand-building techniques, participants will learn how to create these organic forms to place in their home or garden. One not to be missed!

Rural galleries are showing some of the most important exhibitions in Australia today. Don will be in conversation with SAM Director Rebecca Coates exploring the rich histories and current challenges facing rural galleries. Light refreshments provided.

We welcome kindergarten, primary, secondary and tertiary groups to participate in both self-guided and guided tours, activities and workshops at SAM.
All SAM education tours are free but we require all school groups to book in at least one week in advance.
Tours:
Educator led tours: Free educator led tours highlight aspects of the SAM Collection and changing exhibition program. The purpose of these tours is to engage and empower students through positive museum experiences and we are happy to collaborate with teachers around specific learning outcomes.
Self-guided: Self-guided exhibition tours are always welcome and can be further enhanced by our education resources. Younger students must be accompanied by a teacher at all times.

Let’s Talk: Art VCE Analytical Frameworks
Students will discuss and be guided through the use of the VCE Art Analytical Frameworks in response to key artworks in the SAM Collection and exhibition program.
Let’s Talk: Visual Language
Using the SAM Collection, students will build their art specific vocabulary through the analysis and discussion of highlighted artworks.
Let’s Talk: Art Industry Contexts
Using a SAM exhibition, students will learn about the processes involved in preparing, presenting, conserving and promoting art and exhibitions in a public art museum.
Workshops:
Let’s Create: Ceramic Handbuilding
Designed in collaboration with the classroom teacher, students will create a small ceramic piece that will use traditional handbuilding techniques.
$5 per student (inclusive of materials and firing).

SAM Scholars
The SAM Scholars program is designed to complement both the Visual Communication Design and VCE Studio Art study design.
Utilising the SAM Education workshop space and galleries, students will engage in both practical art/design classes and lectures specifically designed to further develop their understanding of design, studio art practice, material, techniques and visual literacy skills.
