Over200 Activities

FREE & low cost activities in Greater Shepparton

October 2014 - March 2015

Welcome from Mayor Jenny Houlihan

Council’s award winning Activities in the Park program encourages Greater Shepparton residents to get out and be active in our local parks. Activities in the Park offers over 200 free and low cost activities for everyone to enjoy. There is a range of interesting and exciting activities to help you stay healthy, active and connected in Greater Shepparton.

I would like to especially recognise and give thanks to our sponsors Tatura Milk Industries, Unilever and Parks Victoria.

I look forward to hearing about the success of this program and hope you are able to participate.

Welcome by Geva Mentor - Melbourne Vixens

“In order for me to give my maximum in training and competition it’s extremely important to lead a healthy lifestyle, which not only incorporates fuelling your body with healthy foods and water, but enough sleep and keeping active to encourage a healthy mind as well as body.

I juggle a busy netball schedule for both the Melbourne Vixens and England National side so it’s vital i maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Making time and being organised is key, knowing when to have a break and to enjoy the simple things of being active and getting outdoors.

After all it’s a great way for me as a non-local to meet and make friends with new people in the community.”

How to get involved

• Check out the calendar and find an activity that suits you.

• Call the contact if registrations are required.

• Wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and remember to be sunsmart by bringing a hat, sunscreen and water bottle.

• Bring along any other equipment listed for your activity.

Things to remember

• All activities are held outdoors and therefore may be subject to poor weather. Please monitor our Facebook page, the Get Mooving App or contact us on (03) 5832 9431 to confirm any changes.

• Children under ten years old participating in our Activities must be supervised by a parent or guardian aged 16 years or older at all times.

• Requirements such as dietary, wheelchair access, mobility aids or vision impairment can be catered for. A portable hearing loop is also available on request. Please contact us on (03) 5832 9431 to discuss further.

• Guide dogs are welcome at all Activities.

*Most of the Activities require registration at time of the activity however some require preregistration which is outline in the activity profiles.

The Activities in the Park program runs from 1 October 2014 to 31 March 2015. The program will break for a two week period over Christmas, from 22 December 2014 to 4 January 2015.

BUG

Greater Shepparton BUG conducts regular bicycle rides to cater for most levels of fitness. The rides are organised and conducted around beautiful areas in central Victoria with most rides ideally suited to the beginner and average cyclist.

Longer distance rides are provided for those members who have higher levels of fitness and seek more challenging rides.

The rides are designed to suit a range of abilities but with special emphasis on supporting and encouraging new cyclists.

All rides have one thing in common - people enjoying recreational cycling.

For more information about riding with BUG, contact Doug Cousins: doug.cousins@bigpond.com or visit: www.sheppbug.com.au

Geocaching

While out walking you may wish to make it more interesting.

Combining walking with some basic technology is referred to as GEOCACHING.

Geocaching is a free high-tech treasure hunting activity where you use a Global Positioning System (GPS) to find caches hidden by other participants.

Geocachers set off to find the cache at the coordinates that they have downloaded from the web to a hand held GPS.

What is a cache?

Typically it is a lunch box type container holding a log book, pen and maybe some swappable items.

Geocachers write a log in the book about their search, they may swap something they have for something in the box and replace the container exactly as they found it.

Caching is all about engaging and exploring areas, some are puzzle based, some take you through several steps before you get to the final point.

It’s great weather to get active, but don’t forget to protect yourself from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.

The peak sun protection season in Victoria is from September to the end of April. To check the daily protection times go to sunsmart.com.au or download the free SunSmart app.

Overexposure to UV rays can cause eye damage, sunburn, premature ageing, and skin damage that can lead to skin cancer. In Australia, sunburn can occur in as little as 11 minutes on a fine summer’s day.

Protect your skin using a combination of these five easy steps:

Slip on sun-protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible

Slop on SPF30 or higher broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen 20 minutes before you head outside. Make sure you reapply every two hours.

Slap on a broad-brimmed hat that shades the face, neck and ears.

Seek shade, especially during the middle of the day when UV levels are highest

Slide on wrap-around sunglasses - labelled AS 1067
