FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK
YOUR CHAMBER CULTIVATING PROSPERITY & QUALITY OF LIFE Your Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce has closed out an incredibly successful, productive fiscal year. Our mission has been, in all things we do, to cultivate our community’s prosperity and quality of life through business-focused leadership and action. The Chamber reaffirmed its long-standing strategic effort to support education and workforce development in the community when we hired Mireya Eavey as our Chief Workforce Officer. In this role, Mireya is managing CareerEdge Funders Collaborative through the Chamber, focusing on providing a labor force to our region’s growing industries. In partnership with a diverse group of local organizations and community leaders, The Chamber is undertaking the “Change the Date” effort, formerly known as “Decide the Date,” through which we are seeking to amend the Charter of the City of Sarasota in an attempt to address extremely low voter participation in City Commission elections. Currently, the City’s elections are held in the spring of odd-numbered years. We are seeking to have these elections changed so that they occur in the fall of even-numbered years. We firmly believe

this will serve to double or triple the turnout among a broad array of City voters -- and voter participation is the cornerstone of representative democracy. We are pleased that this proposed Charter amendment will be presented to the City voters as a referendum on the November 2018 ballot. In recognition of the community-shaping impact of the Bayfront 20:20 Planning Initiative, now known as “The Bay,” The Chamber is supporting that effort financially and with volunteer leadership. In May, we were pleased to be joined by AG Lafley, former president and CEO of Procter & Gamble and Chairman of the Sarasota Bayfront Planning Organization (“SBPO”), and Bill Waddell, managing director of SBPO, at our “Big Idea” luncheon where we discussed the vision for the community’s use of the over 50-acres the City of Sarasota owns in downtown perched upon our beautiful Sarasota Bay. It is an honor to serve as your President/ CEO and to be a part of an important and special organization like The Chamber that has been serving this community and effecting positive change for almost a century. I am proud to be a part of that history. Our work this year has been incredibly rewarding and I thank you for the privilege.

PARTNERS WITH EMPLOYERS TO PILOT
EXPRESS TRAINING PROGRAMS
6
CAREEREDGE HAS PILOTED A UNIQUE MODEL IN PARTNERSHIP WITH EMPLOYERS, post-secondary institutions, and communitybased organizations to provide short-term training programs in high demand skilled trade occupations. Given the tight labor market, employers are desperate for talent and willing to help develop workers with on-the-job training,
mentorships, and apprenticeships in order to close skills gaps. At the same time, under-employed local community members are eager to learn a trade and earn credentials which will allow them the opportunity to enter a career pathway with family-sustaining wages. Companies cannot wait months or years for trained talent, and individuals cannot afford to attend costly long-term post-
secondary programs while trying to support themselves and often family members. CareerEdge recently concept-tested this “Express Program” model in the Trades Sector to provide foundational training with industryrecognized credentials, as well as soft skills training and financial education through CareerEdge’s successful Bridges to Careers curriculum. As part of the Express Program, employers offer ongoing work-based learning opportunities to further develop the graduates. Technical fast-track programs piloted include those in Electrical, Plumbing, Broadband, and
Automotive Technicians. Graduates of the Express Programs are placed directly with employers in full-time paid positions with benefits. While some participants will enter formal apprenticeship or mentorship programs, others will begin as interns in CareerEdge’s Internship Reimbursement program which incentivizes employers with up to $1,000 in reimbursement funds. Major goals of this project include minimizing industry skill gaps and assisting regional employers to meet their workforce needs, while also helping unemployed, low-wage and low-skill workers earn industry certifications and obtain

employment at livable and competitive wages. This win-win strategy facilitates growth in our regional economy by meeting the supply-anddemand side of the workforce needs. According to the National Skills Coalition, these ‘Middle Skill’ jobs (those requiring more than a high school
diploma, but less than a college degree) account for the majority of Florida’s current labor market, with projected demand to remain high. The first step in the development of the Express Trainings is to begin with the employers. Without their involvement in the curricula design and program structure, there would not be quality jobs available for individuals to enter. Proactive participation from the onset has been the key success factor for CareerEdge in the past. The program requires a strong commitment by employers to delineate the skills needed and to develop graduates once they have completed the foundational skills training. As an example, CareerEdge
worked with Gettel Automotive and industry consultant Rick Bond to develop an express Lube Technician program at Suncoast Technical College, which has now expanded to include eight local dealerships as a third cohort of students is set to graduate at the end of the month. CareerEdge began the automotive program by hosting a roundtable of industry representatives and developed a plan based on their input. Gulf Coast Community Foundation donor Walt Eppard also was instrumental in helping this program to
launch. Currently, CareerEdge is partnering with Manatee Technical College and local HVAC (Heating & Air Conditioning) employers to develop a fast-track HVAC Installer program to train individuals for this high-demand occupation. CareerEdge will continue to work directly with employers to find solutions to their talent needs, and to encourage them to be active participants in the workforce development process.

YOUR CHAMBER WINS BIG AT FACP CONFERENCE THE GREATER SARASOTA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EARNED ITS CERTIFIED PLUS DESIGNATION and won 2 awards for Outstanding Communications submissions at the Annual Florida Association of Chamber Professionals Conference this past week in Sanibel Island, Florida. The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, in addition to the Greater Tampa Chamber and West Orange Chamber, earned the Certified Plus designation, which only 19 Chambers hold in the State of Florida. This designation recognizes Chambers for sound business practices and for providing responsible and innovative programs to benefit their membership and denotes our Chamber as a leader in the state. “The Florida Association of Chamber Professionals congratulates the recipients of this prestigious distinction,” said Tammy C. Bracewell, President of FACP. “We are proud of each Chamber’s dedication and commitment to excellence within the business community. The Certified Chamber of Commerce program sets standards within the industry and recognizes chambers that have met those standards while offering guidelines for those to improve their effectiveness. In many ways, it is like the good housekeeping seal of approval for a chamber of commerce.” The other two awards were Outstanding Communications Excellence, and we submitted the Decide the Date campaign in the Public Relations category and our Annual Meeting Your Story videos in
the Audio-Visual category. We won best in the State of Florida in both categories in a year with a record amount of submissions. These awards prove that your Chamber is a leader in many areas and we are working to bring innovative ideas to our business community to cultivate prosperity and quality of life through our member businesses.
ABOUT THE CERTIFIED PLUS DESIGNATION:
In, 2003, FACP implemented the distinction of Florida Certified Chamber to recognize standards of professional excellence in Florida. In 2012, the association enhanced its certification program to include a Certified Plus designation, for chambers of commerce that score an 86 or above during the judging process or are an Accredited Chamber through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Both the Certified and Certified Plus designations recognize chambers that have met high standards and strengthened free enterprise by protecting the business environment.
