• This year, through our CareerEdge initiative, we

will be creating opportunities to upskill workers,

building fast-track programs and building a platform

of data/demographics on our region for our

businesses to use in the planning and operating of

their businesses.

FROM THE CEO Hello and Welcome 2021! We have big expectations as we turn the page to the next chapter of a new year filled with potential and new possibilies to serve our member businesses-who are the true economic engine of our community.

Our mission at the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce is to cultivate Sarasota’s prosperity and quality of life for our member businesses. So how does an organization like ours go about fulfilling its mission in 2021?

1. It deeply cares about the needs, the strengths and the desires of the business community and is willing to work diligently and passionately to exceed the expectations of its members.

• In 2021 we will be creating cutting edge

programming and content for our members

and the business community. These programs

are designed to connect our members to

relevant resources and solutions, help to

inform and educate and build a network of

professional connections.

• Our Chamber councils are open for members

and are available for our members to volunteer

and engage in.

• With the launch of our new brand last

month, we will be communicating and

distilling down pertinent information and

resources that help our businesses.

4. It cares about community and making sure that the quality of life we currently enjoy continues for our businesses, our families, and residents.

• We will be a convener in our community to

partner with other local organizations to address

regional issues and to bring new people and

businesses together.

5. Through a grant from the Barancik Foundation, we will launch a new initiative called Opportunities for All.

• We will dedicate staff and resources to serve

as a navigator for small and minority-owned

businesses. Internships will also be an area of focus,

and we will work to identify and place interns with

our local companies.

6. We will be celebrating our 100-year Centennial anniversary as the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce.

• A series of events and programming will be

announced to celebrate our 100-year anniversary

and showcasing all of the game changing issues that

the Chamber has led the way on for our region for

the last 100 years. We will also install a life size

mural on the Chamber building and create a

commentative book of our history, as well as our

members history to be unveiled mid-year.

A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Chamber’s 100th, the Chamber is busy planning several initiatives to continue supporting you, its members.

Thank you all for your support of our highly successful virtual annual meeting on November 20, 2020. In addition to honoring leaders in our community, we were proud to launch the Chamber’s new brand at that event. This fresh, new look and feel for the Chamber’s branding reflects its growth and evolution, driven by the businesses and organizations that make up this vibrant community.

2021 is finally here! I am so incredibly happy that it has arrived and, with it, a renewed sense of possibility. The Chamber members – the business leaders in this community - have faced the challenges presented by 2020 with creativity, innovation, and grace. As we look ahead to this new year, the

To the Chamber, ‘economic development’ goes beyond shovel-ready land; it means creating a vibrant community that talent is drawn to and where people, especially younger people, want to build a life. One of the key ways that our community can achieve this is through public policy advocacy. The Chamber’s Governmental Issues Council (GIC) and staff have proactively built our 2021 legislative agenda, which we will advocate for at the next legislative session for the state of Florida.

Support the expansion of road networks east of the interstate in order to relieve congestion on I-75

Support the full utilization of the Sadowski Trust Fund revenue solely for housing

Support accessible transit that creates mobility to major employment centers in a regionally efficient and collaborative effort

Support ongoing COVID-19 recovery and resiliency to the business community

Support legislation that reduces the digital divide and expands reliable and affordable access to the devices, signals and skills to all areas of Sarasota County

Support affordable housing opportunities through the alignment of public-private partnership in conjunction with a workforce transportation initiative

EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE Support funding all Florida’s Public Technical College/Centers Workforce Education Programs at a minimum funding level of 100% of the state model as developed and approved by the State FLDOE Workforce Education Funding Committee Support legislation to include career dual enrolled students in the acceleration calculation for state high school grades, which is currently provided for academic dual enrolled students

YOUTH LEADERSHIP ARTS AND CULTURE DAY The Youth Leadership Arts and Culture day was hosted by the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe. They had an amazing, socially distanced set-up in their parking lot. The class was able to enjoy an interactive presentation by the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, featuring acting exercises and more.

They also heard from Will Luera from Florida Studio Theatre who engaged them in different improv exercises.

These interactive and fun exercises created the perfect atmosphere for the students to meet one another in person for the first time and break out of their shells.

CAREEREDGE LAUNCHES TINY H O M E P R OJ E C T TO ST R E N GT H E N HANDS-ON TRAINING Suncoast Technical College (STC) felt the impact of COVID-19 when returning to campus in August, STC limited the number of students in the classroom as well as hands on training opportunities on the shop floor or through internships with local businesses.

Recognizing the critical role hands-on training plays for students, CareerEdge joined forces with STC to create an opportunity that allows students to get hands on experience.

This fall, CareerEdge launched a first of kind training to help ensure STC construction students gain hands on experience by building their first tiny home.

Approximately 180 students across 5 trades programs will gain hands on training over the next 10 months. All trades students from plumbing, construction, HVAC, drafting and electrical will work together to construct the tiny home on campus.

CareerEdge enlisted the help of local philanthropist, Walt Eppard, with the Eppard Family Foundation, to support its tiny house program. “It is rewarding to be a part of bringing this leading-edge type of training in the trades to Sarasota and Manatee counties. The opportunity to help people have a productive career has long term residual effects for our communities.” said Walt Eppard, Retired Developer.

The tiny home will be eco-friendly with rechargeable solar battery, and composting toilet. Upon completion the tiny home will become a rolling promotional center to encourage skilled trades to K-12 students and families in the Sarasota area. Activities will fill the space inside the home to provide students and families with information on skilled trades education and career opportunities.

“The Tiny Home project is a creative collaborative project that not only serves as project-based learning for our current students, but also as a learning lab for future students. These innovative learning opportunities are made possible by CareerEdge and funders like Mr. Eppard.” said Dr. Ron Dipillo, Executive Director of ACTE, Sarasota County Technical College.
