SERVING OUR BUSINESSES AND COMMUNITY The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce works to cultivate Sarasota’s prosperity and quality of life through our member businesses.
FROM THE CHAIR’S CORNER
YOUR CHAMBER CULTIVATING PROSPERITY & QUALITY OF LIFE I could not be more excited about how we have kicked off the year. The success of our Chamber is made possible by the hard work and dedication of our staff, and I could not be prouder of everyone. As we enter our next chapter as an organization, we welcome Heather Kasten as the new President/CEO, starting in March. We are confident that her long-standing leadership in our community will be pivotal in addressing some of the key initiatives that we are focusing on in 2019. Looking ahead, your Chamber is working to continue to provide the connections and resources that your small businesses have come to expect. Whether you’re seeking networking or visibility, the Chamber offers opportunities for everyone. We look forward to the upcoming Annual Breakfast on February 15, where over 400 of our members will gather to hear from keynote speaker Joel Schleicher, former COO of Nextel. Heather Kasten will also be addressing the membership in her look ahead as President/ CEO of our Chamber. We remain strongly committed to economic and community development as we establish the key initiatives for where we can make a difference in the community this year. Workforce also continues to be a key focus, championed by our CareerEdge Funders Collaborative team. Currently, CareerEdge is innovating Fast-Track Training in areas like automotive, plumbing and manufacturing programs. To meet the demands of our manufacturing industry, they have partnered with Suncoast Technical College in a machinist training program. They have also developed a program where employeeparticipants can earn certifications whilst working. Furthermore, they have fostered leadership with their Healthcare Leadership Consortium Training, while also working on 2Gen projects at our schools, which help
parents receive their CNA’s while their kids learn to read. On the legislative side, a small group of Chamber leaders recently headed to Tallahassee to meet with our State Legislators on local initiatives that are important to our prosperity and quality of life. The topics being discussed range from transportation, to workforce, to education. With over 1,100 current members, our membership continues to grow. Last year, the Chamber welcomed 202 new members to the organization. I encourage members to think local, think Chamber, when considering their vendors and business relationships. Please visit the Chamber Directory to view a list of Chamber members you could be doing business with. I am honored and humbled by this opportunity to volunteer my time to try and make a difference for the betterment of Sarasota County. In the coming months, please look out for more new initiatives that I believe will really excite the membership. Please do not hesitate to reach out to anyone on the Chamber Board of Directors to look at an initiative that you would like to be considered.

HEATHER KASTEN The New President/CEO of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce is excited to welcome Heather Kasten back to the Chamber as the new President/CEO beginning in early March. Heather is no stranger to the Chamber, having served as our Vice President of Membership Experience for more than three years, from 2011 to 2014. Heather is from a small town just outside of St. Louis, Missouri. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa and an MBA from Webster University. She started her career with Six Flags Theme Parks and Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals in St. Louis, serving in various regional management roles during her time there. Heather has been in the Sarasota region for over nine years. She was with the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce until 2014, when she became the President and Chief Executive of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.

During her five years at the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance, Heather doubled the membership of local businesses, provided exceptional value to members through over 150 engagement opportunities and exceeded the organization’s yearly revenue goals. Her regional experience in working with both Manatee and Sarasota Government, as well as her work with many community organizations, expanded the economic and community development work of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance. Heather is an active member and leader in our community, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Bradenton Economic Development Corporation, CareerSource Suncoast and Visit Sarasota. She also volunteers with Bayside Community Church, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Meals on Wheels and the Sisterhood for Good Giving Circle.

Sarasota and the region are a thriving business community and I am very excited to work with the Board, the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce team and the community to advance the mission of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Outside of her career, Heather is just as busy at home with her two college age sons, a high school age daughter and a husband of over 27 years. When she isn’t managing teen chaos, Heather enjoys reading on the lanai, going to the movies and, best of all, ordering movie theatre popcorn with extra butter.
