YOUR CHAMBER CULTIVATING PROSPERITY & QUALITY OF LIFE Hello Springtime in the South! It’s hard to believe that we get to live and work in this amazing piece of paradise called Sarasota, Florida. As I write this column, I’m just past the six week point of being on board at the Chamber. I am more excited than ever for what our staff, the board and the many programs of the Chamber are working on for 2019. I’d like to also take the opportunity to offer sincere thanks and gratitude to the entire staff, the board and especially John LaCivita as Chair of the Board for the leadership given to our organization during the recent transition. A big thank you to the Willis Smith team for lending us John for his wisdom, guidance and time to the Chamber. Even in my short stint here, it is evident that this organization is doing great work for our member businesses,
their employees, the community and the region as a whole. In the coming months, I look forward to meeting with you to learn and understand what your most pressing needs are as a business. Here at the chamber we will be focused on building a strong culture both internally and externallybeing the go-to organization for local businesses. Our organization’s foundation is built from our strong Board of Directors, a strong staff and a very strong and connected business community made up of our member businesses. We have some very engaging programming on tap in the coming months- see the details in the pages of this magazine. I look forward to seeing and meeting you soon at a Chamber event!

A M B A S S A D O R O F T H E Q U A RT E R Bob Williams was selected as the Chamber Ambassador of the Quarter due to his high-attendance at Ambassadors meetings, his work attending & volunteering at events and on-boarding & welcoming new Chamber members. We are excited to recognize Bob as the Chamber Ambassador of the Quarter. Congratulations! Bob Williams is the former Commodore of Bird Key Yacht Club and now serves as an ambassador to the Sarasota Chamber on behalf of the Club. Originally from the Cincinnati area, Bob, his wife Leslie and his children were snowbirds for the last thirty years before moving to Sarasota as full-time residents four years ago. After graduating college, Bob worked for his 108 year old family business, Irwin Tools, in Ohio until the late 1990’s. After selling the company, Bob joined an investment group to build a supermarket and retail center in the Turks and Caicos Islands. For most of the 2000’s, Bob turned his attention to investing in the natural resource market as an independent investor where his travels often took him North to Canada and to several countries in South America. After successfully helping Bird Key Yacht Club rebuild their membership after several difficult years, Bob is now looking for new opportunities in the Sarasota area.

Member News ALL FAITHS FOOD BANK received $145,000 in grants in support of the Backpack Program, which provides bags of kid-friendly, healthy food to students to take home for over the weekends and holidays at 53 schools, and the School Pantry Program which provides children and families with access to fresh produce, meats and groceries at 17 schools.
LIGHTHOUSE OF MANASOTA, a nonprofit organization that provides no-cost rehabilitation training and education to the blind and visually impaired, rebrands to Lighthouse Vision Loss Education Center
BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF SARASOTA COUNTY, with support from the Charles & Margery Brancik Foundation, will provide middle and high school students in Sarasota County with year-round academic, social and careerreadiness opportunities at no cost through the Club At Night (CAN) Program.
OWENS ELECTRIC, a family owned electrical company who has served the Manatee and Sarasota County for over 25 years added a new landscape lighting division.
DAVID WEEKLY HOMES the nation’s largest private home builder, received four awards at the ManateeSarasota Building Industry’s Parade of Homes Awards. These bring the company’s total to more than 780 awards for product design and 1,256 overall. DESIGNING DAUGHTERS OF SARASOTA, a whollyowned subsidiary of the Roskamp Foundation, donated $90,000 to 30 area nonprofits from funds raised in 2018. A partnership between GOODWILL MANASOTA and local food banks resulted in more than 115,000 pounds of food for the hungry in Sarasota and Manatee counties. GILBERT DESIGN BUILD has been selected to join the exclusive REMODELING Big50.
MUSIC COMPOUND’S Beer, Bands & BBQ Festival raises $5k for children’s music education.
A partnership between SARASOTA COUNTY SCHOOLS and Goodwill Manasota has enabled Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students from Booker High School to enjoy in-service training and job preparation skills at the Goodwill Mecca location in northern Sarasota. Seven students are learning on the job while earning school credit. SARASOTA BRADENTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (SRQ) passenger traffic for the month of March was up 33% over March 2018 with 197,889 passengers traveling through the airport. This follows 13 straight months of traffic increases with year-to-date traffic up 36.5%. SOUTHTECH was recognized on the CRN 500 list for excellence and innovation in managed IT services. VISIT SARASOTA COUNTY’S Enriqueta Balandra has been named one of Destination International’s (DI), 30 Under 30 Future Leaders of Destination Marketing and Management Industry.

CareerEdge Brings Region to the Forefront of Innovation with U.S. Chamber Partnership The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has chosen CareerEdge Funders Collaborative, the workforce initiative of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, along with their “Utilizing open partners, to pioneer an innovative workforce data tools [...] to solution that uses make [...] job technology to develop information open source job descriptions, which will clearer” improve employers’ ability to source talent. As part of the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s year long Job Data Exchange (JDX) Pilot Project, CareerEdge will work with PGT Innovations and Four Winds Network Services to begin utilizing open data tools and resources to make manufacturing job information clearer and more accessible for education providers, our local workforce and employers. Participation in this pilot offers access to the latest technology and advances CareerEdge’s near decade of work in connecting employers and partners to create regional workforce solutions. Translating job data to open data will create a universal language for employer signaling, allowing education, training and credentialing partners to create more effective career pathway infrastructure. HVAC Installation Fast-Track Training Q&A with Marshall 1. How has this program differed from others that you’ve participated in? “The program is extremely thorough, and the instructors are determined to see us succeed. You can feel that in the way they set the expectations for us. What sets it apart is that it’s not just training for some job, it’s training for a career and they want to make sure we’re taught correctly.”
2. What do you think about the hands-on learning approach of this program? “The hands-on aspect of this course is the most vital part of the entire training. It gets you in, and shows you what you’re going to be dealing with out in the real world. With this level of hands-on experience, we’ll be able to go out and already be prepared for a myriad of scenarios that we would have otherwise been blindsided by.”
3. What are some of the biggest takeaways that you will leave this experience with? “The expectations set by Jeff of Ultimate Air [volunteer program instructor]- he made it clear that this is a career and something that you want to take pride in. Your name is attached to everything you do, and you want to do it right the first time. That’s what he’s teaching us, to do the correct services efficiently and effectively.”
4. Why did you apply to this program? “I applied to this program because I needed a job. The long and short of it is, at the time of applying I was working for a company that wasn’t very good for my family or myself. I had just started there because I got laid off from the highest paying job I’d ever had and we were still reeling from that. It was very hard- my wife and I had just started to plan for a new home. Everything was falling into place and then in an instant it was all gone. So we knew it was time for something new.”
5. Why HVAC as a career? “I’ve heard multiple times from various sources that there is a great need for well-trained technicians. This is more than just a career choice for methis is my family’s future. This program has already helped me develop skills that I will be able to use to guarentee a bright future for myslef and my loved ones.” Since completing the FastTrack Training, Marshall was hired by Cool Today.
