Leadership, Education and DevelopmentLEAD!
The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce has developed a new program that focuses a little less on networking, and a little more on content. Through this program, we endeavor to help participants develop characteristics that will take their businesses to the next level. Sponsored in part by the Tampa Hillsborough Express Authority, our LEAD Launch will take place on Friday, June 23rd. Following the launch will be eight monthly meetings culminating with the inaugural class graduation.

Jennifer Sookoor
LEAD will highlight some of the best businesses throughout the Greater Riverview community, and each meeting will include a visit by a local leader or to a local business. These leaders will not only explain what they do, but how they differentiate themselves from others in the field. For example, rather than learn how to build a road, we will instead learn how to take an idea, execute it successfully, and efficiently implement it.

This program is designed to be as inclusive as possible! As such, meetings will begin after school starts and tasks will be completed before afternoon pick up. There are no mandatory night or weekend trips, and we will skip December for the holidays. To facilitate deeper discussions, participants will be asked to complete background reading or watch videos prior to each meeting. As a former educator with over 15 years of experience, the development of this program is personal. My Daddy always told me that education is the one thing no one can take from you. Starting a business is easy, but sustaining a business takes effort and knowledge is still power. I hope you will join us on the 23rd and help launch this amazing program!

The May MAC meeting emphasized how the GRCC members and the community can assist and participate in enriching the lives of our military community. This really hits home when projects are planned with the idea of improving quality of life for our military and veterans. One such project is the Tampa Bay Ferry Service to include a much needed commuter ferry service from South County to McDill Air Force Base, which will relieve a minimum of one hour travel time for those members that work on the base and live in South County. Tanya Doran, President and CEO of the Tampa Bay Ferries Alliance, gave a thorough overview of this much needed project. Be a supporter by signing up at tampabayferriesalliance.org.
A recap of future Veterans Memorial Park events was given with emphasis on upcoming Memorial Day . A young lady will be presented a certificate of achievement from GRCC MAC for reaching the level of Eagle Scout. 100 Letters are being written by elementary school students to be given out on the upcoming June 13 Honor Flight during mail call as these WWII & Korean War veterans return from a wonderful tour in Washington DC. Other events include the Hillsborough County Veterans Helping Veterans non-profit’s annual golf outing scheduled for September 30. Future fundraising events and also future tours for members and the community were discussed with more details to come in the future. The MAC meets the second Friday of every other odd number months with next meeting scheduled for July 14th at The Bridges. Please join us and participate in helping to enrich the lives of our military community.

Chamber Hosts May Legislative Wrap Up Sponsored by St. Joseph's Hospital - South
The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) hosted an informative Legislative Wrap Up on Monday, May 22, 2023, at The Regent in Riverview, featuring state lawmakers who shared their experiences from the recent Florida Legislature Session, including which bills passed, which did not, and the legislative impact upon local businesses. Participants included Representative Mike Beltran, Representative Danny Alvarez, and Senator Darryl Rouson.
A delicious lunch was served by Outback and Carrabba's Express. 2023 GRCC Chair of the Board, Tammy See, OEL Heating & Cooling, started the meeting, welcoming members and guests, followed by Bob Sharp of Cookson Hills Family Ministries of Florida, who delivered the day’s Invocation. Leading the attendees this month in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance was the GRCC Military Affairs Committee Co-Leader, Rich Rohde of R Processor, Inc., and a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem was sung by Joe Zuniga of Zuniga Marketing.
The Legislative Wrap Up was moderated by Ron Pierce of RSA Consulting Group. Following the panel discussion amongst the lawmakers, questions were submitted

from the audience, with each lawmaker offering their response and discussion. Significant topics of discussion included, but were not limited to, the sweeping tort reform bill that reduces the statute of limitations for filing civil suits from four years to two, the immigration reform bill requiring businesses with more than 25 employees to use the E-Verify Platform, a school safety mapping measure to help in active shooting situations, and the 2018 transportation tax.
Providing the audio for the event was Doogie Entertainment, linens from Fancy That Specialty Linens, and photographs by Gerardo Luna Photographs.

How the Chamber Makes Connections
by Debbie Kirkland, Director of Investor Relations, Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce
Connections have been a long-time staple of Chambers of Commerce offerings. As a Chamber staff member, making those connections can also be one of the most rewarding parts of the job. In my nearly eleven years, I have witnessed a lot of great connections, but the following may have been one of the most rewarding connections of all.
I am also a member of the Riverview Woman’s Club and was an attendee at their annual Scholarship Awards Dinner. Upon my arrival, I connected with most everyone in the room. There were some of our Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce members in attendance, there were of course Riverview Woman’s Club members, and then there were the scholarship winners and their families who knew no one else in the room. The time had come when I needed to select a seat for myself. I could have sat at the hostess table, since I was going to be a speaker at this event. I could have sat with my Chamber members, where I am sure there would have been interesting conversation and laughter. Instead, I chose to sit with one of the scholarship winners and her guest who had plenty of empty seats at their table. Eventually, another Chamber member sat with us at this table as well - Janice Bayruns with FirstLight Home Care.
Before the program began, we made introductions and began to learn a little bit about each other. Of course, I told them what a Chamber was all about and how great our members are at their jobs and out in the community. This led me to introducing them to our other table mate, Janice Bayruns. That immediately led to how wonderful she is and what a fantastic business she runs. While we enjoyed our dinner, we continued our conversation. Janice and I discovered that the “guest” was not this young lady’s father, stepfather, or even brother. He was

her swim coach, and by her own description, he was her “father that’s not her father”. The gentleman is indeed a father. His own daughter won one of these scholarships just 2 years ago! The young lady winning this year’s scholarship had been missing a father figure in her life for quite some time. This incredible man was her connection to a very successful high school completion, finishing top of her class, winning scholarships, and being accepted into college where she plans to be a Marine Biologist.
This isn’t the end of the connection. What we also learned was that this young lady’s mother is 100% disabled, and she is the primary person responsible for her mother’s well-being. WOW! Now Janice and I are astonished and both wondering “how is this beautiful young lady going to manage all of this?” Janice began gently gathering more details and confirming what steps had already been taken. Before the night was over, the young lady was armed with names and numbers of several people she may not have ever known existed, and most importantly, Janice’s cell phone number for any additional needs.
This connection likely would not have happened had I not decided to sit at this table with complete strangers. This connection likely would not have happened if Janice had not decided to sit with us. This connection likely would not have happened if we had not been open to conversation and sharing. Not only did this amazing young woman get great connections to help with her mother, but one of our Chamber members, or at least one of her business partners, is likely to receive a new client connection.
It was a beautiful connection!!
If you have a beautiful connection story, let us know. Your story might end up in the next edition of Noteworthy.
