It is that time of year when the start of school begins to stir emotions. Some are happy and excited to return to school. Others are a bit sad that summer was too short, not allowing enough time to spend with family before the regular routines restart. For GRCC, "Back to School" began with an AMAZING Teaching to Excellence event where our local teachers “got all that, and a bag of chips," and many of our members were able to showcase their businesses to hundreds of local educators with great publicity.

GRCC Hosts 2023 Teaching to Excellence

On Thursday, August 3rd, Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual Teaching to Excellence Event at the beautiful Winthrop Barn Theatre, celebrating teachers from local Riverview schools by showering them with school supplies to help kick off school year. With a "Back to the 90's" theme, GRCC businesses manned supply stops for the teachers to pass by and collect supplies provided by the GRCC members. Many raffle baskets were given away during the celebration, and Teachers of the Year were gifted a bottle of wine. Special awards will be delivered to the Teachers of the Year at their schools by GRCC members in the coming weeks for even further recognition of their honor! The year's Summa Cum Laude presenting sponsor was AdventHealth Riverview. Valedictorian sponsors included Huntington Learning Center, Board & Brush, Suncoast Credit Union, and The Mosaic Company.

The 90's theme was expertly carried out with decor by Craig Beckinger with ABC Events Planning. Beautiful backdrops with graffitti art were done by Erin Redline with Chill Cawfee. Providing the delicious food for the morning were GRCC members, Chill Cawfee, Nothing Bundt Cakes, and Chick-fil-A Riverview.

Connections

Are you a one-and-done person? Did you perhaps say, “I went, nothing happened"? Don’t give up so easily! According to experts, you will likely have to connect with a prospective client 5 – 8 times before they decide to consider your offering. If it feels like John Boy has all the connections in the room, it may be because he has been working on them for YEARS. That doesn’t mean that you can’t accumulate the same connections. It just means you have to be patient.

It’s a bit like starting a diet. Some people want to hit it hard and fast and accumulate those numbers in the first month or two. Others like to take the slower, gentler approach. You have to find the style that is best for you when it comes to acquiring those connections, but remember - patience. No one likes to encounter a bull in a china shop.

Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) provides many opportunities for you to find your style. Whether it is at TCOB, a luncheon, or a Ribbon Cutting, inperson connections can be your strongest. The other person gets to see your face, look you in the eye, hear your words, and read your body language. We also know that not everyone has the ability to make multiple in-person connections, and GRCC can also help you behind the scenes.

Perhaps you can manage an in-person event if it is on your schedule? If that is the case, consider hosting a GRCC facilitated event (Open House, After Hours, Ribbon Cutting) at your location and time of choice. You can also ask any of your GRCC staff to provide an electronic introduction to a particular member(s) you have been looking to meet, and then you can schedule a meeting that is convenient for you.

Others need to just make sure their name gets seen and recognized to make their connections. GRCC can help in this arena as well. Being a sponsor of a GRCC event is a terrific way for people to connect with your business name and know that you

are a supporter of your community. GRCC also offers advertising opportunities in our monthly digital newsletter to get your name seen. Plus, there are many other great advertising opportunities being discussed and formulated currently with our NEW CEO/President Ny’kole Krivda on deck. Be sure to stay tuned and take advantage of some of these great connection tools coming your way.

Remember – Rome wasn’t built in a day, but GRCC can help build your Connections!!

ECONOMIC VIEWPOINTS

Prices Rose 3.2% Annually in July

The Consumer Price Index (CPI), the broadest measure of consumer prices, rose 3.2% annually in July. That is up from June when it was 3%, but well down from the peak of 8.8% in June 2022.

On a monthly basis, inflation rose 0.2% from June to July, the same rate as from May to June.

Why it matters: We are still far from getting inflation down to the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.

Big picture: Core prices, which strip out volatile elements like food and energy, rose 4.7% on an annual basis and 0.2% from June to July. This is the metric the Fed looks at most closely, and it is still very high and hasn’t come down much since the Fed started raising interest rates in March 2022.

The stickiness of the core data likely means the Fed will have to keep future rate hikes on the table.

Other key data points:

Energy prices fell 13% because of a 20% drop in gas prices. Electricity rose by 3%.

Food at home (groceries) prices rose 0.3% in July and are up 3.6% annually.

Housing rose 7.7% on an annual basis.

Used cars were down 5.6% from a year ago, but new cars were up 3.5%.
