BankNewport Charitable Foundation Grant for Sail Newport’s Experiential Learning Program

Funds support STEM learning for Newport’s 4 thgrade students through sailing and marine science education

Newport, RI - (July 22, 2025) – The BankNewport Charitable Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to Sail Newport to support this year’s 4th Grade Science and Sailing Program, a free experiential learning initiative for students from Pell Elementary School in Newport. The program integrates sailing instruction with environmental science education and has become a cornerstone of marine educatio n for Newport youth.

“There’s something really special about watching Newport’s kids light up when they’re out on the water many for the very first time,” said Jack Murphy, President and CEO, BankNewport. “Sail Newport’s commitment to access, education, and hands-on learning leaves a lasting impression. We’re proud to support a program that not only connects students to the natural beauty of our coastline but also builds confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.”

Launched in 2017, the 16-week program is held at Sail Newport’s Sailing Center located within Fort Adams State Park. Every week, 4th grade students and their teachers spend structured time learning about Narragansett Bay, its ecology, weather, and history while receiving sailing instruction on the water. Sail Newport provides all equipment, staffing, facilities, transportation, and snacks at no cost to students or families.

The program also reinforces state STEM curriculum standards and ensures that all students, regardless of any social, emotional, physical or developmental challenges, can participate.

The Pell School Program engages populations often under-represented in the sport of sailing. In the 2024–2025 school year, 126 4th grade students from the Pell School participated, more than 70% of whom received free or reduced lunch.

Sail Newport’s program has also become an inspiration for continued marine exploration opportunities, including the Thompson Middle School Marine Exploration Program and the summer Youth Sailing Program. Feedback from educators, families, and students highlights the program’s value in building confidence, aca demic engagement, and a stronger connection to the environment.

Redwood Library & Athenaeum Reaches $5 million Endowment Campaign Goal

Monday, 28th July, 2025, Newport, Rhode Island… The Redwood Library & Athenaeum announces that it has reached its endowment campaign goal of $5 million, bringing to a close an effort that began in 2019 but that was interrupted by the pandemic, and restarted in 2023.

The campaign’s success culminates many years of preceding planning involving staff, board, Library members, shareholders and supporters that outlined for the Library’s multiple stakeholders the institution’s future as a multi-disciplinary athenaeum and its needs both physical and financial, as well as to make clear the campaign’s ultimate purpose: to further the financial stability of the Nation’s first purpose-built library.

Relying on broad support, from countless grass-roots donations from across the country to corporate contributions, in addition to major gifts from longstanding local donors and regional foundations, the campaign’s success reflects the Redwood’s extensive reach across many demographics, local, regional and national. The endowment campaign’s success mirrors the growth in the Redwood’s membership and unrestricted donations in recent years, owing to the quality and frequency of its programming and exhibitions.

“We are grateful to all of the contributors, large and small, local to national, who have helped bring this campaign to a happy close. That said, despite this milestone achievement, the work towards long term sustainability never ends. We will always need to raise annual operating monies and expand our donor base to fulfill an ambitious vision equal to our times,” affirmed Redwood Executive Director Benedict Leca.

Now with a total endowment of approximately $17 million to fund the upkeep of its historic buildings, the enrichment, preservation and promotion of its remarkable collections, and the mounting of its varied programs of lectures, concerts and exhibitions, the Redwood will continue to strive for ever smaller endowment draws that characterize sustainable institutions.
