The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) 2024 Black History Theme*, “African Americans and the Arts,” underscores the profound impact of African American culture on various artistic forms, shaping the vibrant cultural landscape in America. African American art, spanning music, literature, visual arts, and more, serves as a conduit for preserving history and empowering communities. Despite historical denials, the unbroken chain of Black artistry resonates globally, from spirituals born from bondage to influential blues musicians shaping genres like gospel and soul. Writers like Phillis Wheatley and sculptors like Edmonia Lewis significantly contributed to Black literature and aesthetics. Cultural movements like The Black Renaissance and The New Negro Movement catapulted Black arts onto the international stage. Figures like Langston Hughes and Josephine Baker championed these movements, leading the way for subsequent artistic expressions. Hip-hop emerged as a pivotal force in addressing social, political, and cultural issues, challenging racial violence and economic disinvestment. Afrofuturism envisioned a liberated future, influencing various artistic expressions and cultural productions. This Black History Month and beyond, we partner with institutions such as Brockway Memorial Library and Barry University, focusing on visual arts. This includes documentary screenings and panel discussions themed “Roots & Resilience: Black Histories in Motion.” These discussions delve into significant historical figures, highlighting the challenges they faced in authenticating their own works due to racial biases. Films like Stamped from the Beginning, Razing Liberty Square, and Crossing Overtown illuminate South Florida’s historical discriminatory practices and their enduring impact on neighborhoods.
