Q&A with El Portal Mayor Omarr Nickerson When talking about The “Greater” Miami Shores, we include our neighboring Villages, Biscayne Park, Little River, and El Portal. They are all connected by street grids, railway, majestic trees, and waterways, all blessed with their own charm, architecture, history and traditions. Each one a hidden treasure, with roots that extend to indigenous tribes, and a host of leaders that keep pushing the needle. Bordering the Village Beautiful, with a population of 2,000, the Village of El Portal is at the cusp of booming. Incorporated in 1937, the name El Portal is derived from the Spanish term, “the gate”, referencing two wooden gates that once stood as a gateway to the Village. As the Village of El Portal evolved, the residents remained steadfast in playing a part in its preservation and protecting its historical and archeological significance and designation. Tucked

He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Miami in Liberal and Social Arts. He then went on to obtain his 1st Master’s Degree in Global History and Socio-Geographic Studies from the University of Cairo, in Egypt. He got his 2nd Master’s Degree in International Political Science and Economic

Development from the University of Damascus, in Syria. His Doctorate Degree was also acquired in International Studies and International Relations/Affairs from the University of Beijing, in China, and the University of Damascus, in Syria, respectively. Today, Mayor Nickerson remains a perpetual scholar, and has surrounded himself with the right people. He proudly credits the residents of El Portal and his “Tag-Team Partners in Success”, Ms. Clerk Jacobi, CMC, and Ms. Christia E. Alou, Esq., alongside the El Portal Administrative Team. Together they continue to learn about the opportunities and potentials that exist, and thus far they have procured historic levels of accomplishments.

Why did you decide to run for Mayor of El Portal? From early on I have been a history buff. I was a voracious reader and obsessed with documentaries. and I wanted to be part of something that made a difference. I served in the El Portal Council for 13 years. Working with my community is something I love and becoming Mayor was something I had to do.

What are your priorities as Mayor? First and foremost, safety. Our police department is diligent and recently revamped, including a new fleet of cars. They strive to serve our community. As for communication, I have an open “phone” policy, you will find my cell phone published in most materials. I want to be accessible and make sure everyone is heard. The same goes during our council meetings and

I made sure that was a priority when I took office. Residents now have a more efficient platform that affords the opportunity to voice their views and concerns - to be heard. And of course, transparency - it is something I demand. It is crucial for every community. As Mayor there was more information accessible and allowed me to understand what we needed to do to move forward. For example, since coming into office, we have been focused on grants and have secured millions. This has allowed us to improve our Safety as a Community. Our Police Department is now one of the most technologically advanced in the southern region. In fact, we are the very first in Miami-Dade County to acquire Neighborhood

Skatebird Miami Protection Devices, along with “beefing up” our Police Department, by hiring more Law Enforcement Officers to keep our residents even safer. In addition, we have secured funding to complete Phase I of our Stormwater Master Plan, which has begun to reduce Flooding. Phase II is next! We have also received millions to begin our Waste Water (Septic-to-Sewer Conversion) Masterplan Construction. We should be breaking ground on that project within the next 2 years. I have set forth the initiative, “Connecting The County: North, South, East, West”, where I connect with neighboring municipality officials throughout Miami-Dade County. I attend their Council

Fundraising events are always a hit. “The Leading Ladies Halloween Luncheon” held at the Miami Shores Country Club, donated a portion of their proceeds from the luncheon to help with organ transplantation. The “Pablo Lopez Pickleball for Pets” event, took place at the Miami Shores Tennis & Pickleball Club and gave participants the opportunity to get familiar with Paws4U, meet adoptable pups, play pickleball, and take photos with pitcher Pablo Lopez of the Minnesota Twins. The first ever TedX El Portal was held at the Citadel Miami featuring talks about “Miami 2033.” The event featured visionaries, innovators, and local leaders who shared transformative ideas tailored for Miami’s future.

I have also worked on annexing more areas for business growth, researching and visiting other States to bolster interest in future projects.

What is up and coming at El Portal? We are so excited about the new projects coming to El Portal, like the Kavista Apartments launching in 2024. It just gives the area a fresh look and sets forth a number of possibilities. We also have a riverfront restaurant in the works. Our abandoned church on Second and 87th street will get a second life. This one is very exciting - we personally sought assistance from Elm Spring, in Miami, and restaurateurs in New Orleans. They have provided a vision that is the perfect fit for us and our surrounding villages. It just compliments everything that is happening around us. The Village Plaza (Sanctuary Village) Building, much like New Orleans’ “The Vessel” housed in a cathedral, the space will be environmentally circular and will include restaurants in the Chapel area, along with boutiques and cafes, and the second floor will be dedicated to offices. And of course, we too have set out to secure a kayak launch for our residential areas that will connect to our upcoming riverfront restaurant. What message do you have for our communities? All of our Villages are special and we all focus on what is best for each one. We cannot spend time allowing the outside noise to weigh us down. As officials, we want to make sure our residents are safe in their homes.
