The Lehigh Valley business sentiment index rose by 6% in January.
In January, the Valley's Business Sentiment Index (BSI) rose by 6%, the largest one-quarter increase since Covid recovery. The index took a major hit from the inflation surge in 2022. In January, however, the index rose to 57, the same as last January’s level. The index runs from zero to 100. Above 50 means local business sentiment is positive; below 50, it is negative. The BSI is based on a quarterly survey of businesses in the Valley conducted by the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce- Kamran Afshar; it ran from October 1998 through January 2025. The index of plans for future purchases reversed its last summer’s drop, rising by 16% in January, its highest level since last April. One of every four respondents plans to increase its purchasing in the next 6 months. Retailers led those planning to increase their future purchases, while manufacturers planned to reduce them. The index of purchases in the last
six months rose for the first time since last April. Professional businesses led the increases, while Real Estate led the declines. While more businesses increased their purchases than reduced, the average amount of change has decreased. Plans for future hiring, which dropped to its recessionary level last July, have been rising since then. In January, the index moved into the positive range while still well below last January’s level. All sectors other than accommodation-food plan to increase employment in the next six months. The index of past hiring fell below 50 last October, indicating more businesses laid off than hired employees. It rose to 52 in January, showing hiring increases. Healthcare led those who raised their employment level, while accommodation-food and finance led those who reduced their employment size.
The index of past revenues rose by 13% over last October. More than a third of the respondents reported higher revenues, while 15% saw their revenues shrink over the last 6 months. Finance led those reporting higher revenues, while businesses in the accommodation-food sector reported a drop in theirs. The index of future revenues is the only index in our model that dropped in January. It is now at its lowest level since January 2021. The percentage of businesses that expect their revenues to
rise dropped from 44% last October to 32% in January. Real estate led those expecting lower revenues, while retail led those expecting higher revenues in the next 6 months. The hiring index has been rising since last October, and the purchasing index joined in in January, pushing the overall index up. The revenue index, however, was the only one which showed a slight decline. Despite that, the overall index rose, indicating that local business sentiment has moved into the positive range.
