January is often described by people as a season of beginnings and the Lehigh Valley is already leaning into what comes next and at the Chamber, that sense of momentum is exciting and unmistakable! As we kick off the new year, the Chamber is preparing for a busy spring season filled with opportunities to connect and engage. Among the most anticipated are our State of the Cities events, where the mayors of Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton will share their visions, priorities, and progress. These conversations matter! They give our business community insight into where our cities are headed and how public and private sectors can continue working together to strengthen our region.

But the story of the Lehigh Valley does not stop at our city limits — and neither does the work of the Chamber!

This year, we are placing a renewed emphasis on the rural communities that surround and support our urban centers. These vibrant smaller commu-

nities are an essential part of the Lehigh Valley’s economic and cultural fabric.

Their challenges, innovations, and successes deserve the same attention and advocacy as those of our cities and as a Chamber we are at the forefront of that excitement! What unites our cities, towns, and rural communities is a shared belief in collaboration and connection. When we come together — across municipalities, industries, and geographies — we create a stronger, more resilient region. The Chamber exists to be that connector: bringing people into the same room, encouraging thoughtful dialogue, and helping ideas turn into action. As Board Chair, I’m inspired by the engagement of members — business leaders, nonprofit partners, educators, and civic leaders who show up with curiosity and commitment. In the months ahead, I encourage you to take part in Chamber programming, attend an event outside your usual lane, and engage with voices and perspectives that may be new to you. The year ahead holds tremendous opportunity!

Took place on Friday, December 5 at The Aster Event Center

The Chamber’s annual Healthcare Summit took place on Friday, December 5, at The Aster Event Center, gathering regional leaders, industry experts, and elected officials for a morning of insight, innovation, and timely discussion.

Special guests included Dr. Oz, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Senator David McCormick, Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, Representative Zach Mako, Representative Doyle Heffley, and Mayor of Allentown, Matt Tuerk.

The event included presentations from Sarah Lutz of Workforce Board Lehigh Valley, Eric Bartosz of BAR40, Dr. Chaminie Wheeler of CCC Health, Blue Griffiths of Blue Zones, and a panel discus-

ened. As never before, the conference ended without noteworthy agreements for carbon reductions.

In Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, in the face of judicial and legislative pushback, withdrew the initiative to join RGGI (the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative that includes eleven states in the Northeast). This was a major move that could help minimize increases in electricity costs to Pennsylvania’s businesses and residents brought on by expanded wind and solar generation and imposition of carbon fees on electricity.

Past US actions that prematurely shut down vital fossil and nuclear (dispatchable) generating stations, as well as the anticipated large rise in electric power demand, have seriously strained the outlook for electricity supplies. The Trump administration is working to preserve fossil and nuclear stations in jeopardy of being shut down, and where possible return idled stations to service as a bridge to newer supplies. Wind and solar can’t fulfill that need.

Nationally, President Trump has withdrawn the US from the United Nations Paris Climate Agreement and declined to send delegates to the annual Conference of Parties (COP30 in Brazil, Nov. 10-21). Notably China, India and Russia also declined participation leaving the UN climate initiative severely weak-

A Strong Job Market is Fueling Lehigh Valley Growth The Lehigh Valley’s strong employment market, ample open space and proximity to world class cities has for decades made it an attractive landing for spot for people and businesses looking for a high quality of life, and that growth will consider for decades to come.

The Lehigh Valley Planning Commission’s latest Employment and Population Forecast shows that this region will add more than 80,000 jobs and 100,000 people by 2050.

While population grows by 18.6% to 816,287 people in that period, the number of jobs will grow even faster, at 24.9 percent, to 404,976 workers, according to a forecast done by Senior Data and Analytics Planner Dr. Subham Kharel and Minsoo Park, an economist with the LVPC and Workforce Board Lehigh Valley.

Kharel and Park built their own Artificial Intelligence model and used more than 70 data sets to perform what we believe will be our most accurate fore-

cast yet. Not only will we be adding roughly 4,300 new residents a year – even as two-thirds of Pennsylvania flatlines or shrinks – but our analysis shows that our strong job market is driving our growth. In fact, we’re now a net importer of workers. Nearly 5,000 more workers commute into the Lehigh Valley than leave it for work each day.

That’s an about-face from just five years ago when the region was a net exporter by nearly 4,000 workers a day.

This region has gotten used to growth.

Since 1970, we’ve added 240,000 people. That’s like adding another Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton and Emmaus.

As encouraging as it is to be such an attractive region, it also takes a lot of good planning to manage that kind of expansion. We’re proud to collaborate with our municipal partners, business community and residents in using these forecasts to guide actionable strategies.

Our goal is to ensure that as the region grows, development is coordinated, equitable and sustainable.

The holiday season has a way of pulling us into overdrive. Between shopping lists, packed calendars, travel plans, and the pressure to make everything “perfect,” it’s easy to find ourselves exhausted before the new year even begins. But what if this season could feel different? What if, instead of pushing harder, we allowed ourselves to flow?

What if we allowed a mindset of ease, intention, and alignment to flow, even during the busiest time of year? The call to flow isn’t about doing less. It’s about doing things with greater awareness.

It’s about releasing unnecessary pressure, listening more deeply, and creating space for what truly matters. When we approach the holidays with a flow mindset, we emerge on the other side not depleted—but renewed. That mindset comes to life at the next installment in our series, Float, Flow and Fly: Unlocking a Fresh Way of Thinking, taking place on January 21 at the State Theatre in Easton. This powerful session on FLOW will be led by Keith Campagna, a Life-Work Integration expert whose work helps individuals and organizations build healthier habits, stronger focus, and more sustainable rhythms for work and life.

Community partnerships continue to play a vital role in preserving and enhancing the Lehigh Valley’s historic and cultural assets—projects like the newly restored herb garden at the Hellertown Historical Society are a powerful example. Originally established in the mid1990s by a local women’s club following the restoration of the 1760s Grist Mill stone building, the garden has recently been revitalized through a collaborative effort that blends historical preservation, education, and volunteer engagement. The initiative brought together dedicated volunteers with a passion for gardening and an interest in 18th-century cultivation techniques to lead the cleanup, redesign, and historical research.

To ensure historical accuracy, the group consulted with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to identify plant varieties appropriate to the region and time-period. The result is a thoughtfully

curated garden that reflects how plants were grown and used during colonial times. New permanent plant markers further enhance the visitor experience, providing educational context about each variety and its historic purpose— whether medicinal, culinary, or practical. The addition of a nearby water supply creates a hands-on learning feature that demonstrates how water was accessed and used by colonial forefathers. Together, these improvements transform the garden into an interactive outdoor classroom for residents, students, and visitors.

Projects like this are made possible through strong local partnerships.

The start of a new year is a chance to reflect on the successes of 2025 and embrace the opportunities that await in 2026.

In Easton, our 2025 year was defined by connection and collaboration. One of our most significant milestones was deepening our partnership with the Warren County Council. This collaboration encouraged us to think beyond local boundaries, embrace a regional perspective, and work together to create opportunities that benefit businesses on both sides of the river.

We introduced innovative initiatives aimed at bringing people together and supporting local entrepreneurs. One highlight was the launch of the Belvidere Food Truck Festival, which turned Belvidere’s picturesque downtown into

a lively destination filled with delicious food, local vendors, and a strong sense of community. It was a clear reminder that when we create inviting, memorable experiences, people come together.

Looking ahead, mark your calendars for one of our most anticipated events: Easton’s State of the City on March 19 at Lafayette College. This annual gathering brings business leaders, elected officials, and community partners together to celebrate progress and hear what’s next for Easton from Mayor Panto.

AI, Community, and the Power of Slowing Down: Leadership Insights from Todd Shamash

Every morning, Todd Shamash arrives at Capital Blue Cross headquarters and sees a familiar landmark just across the street – his old high school. The headquarters sits on a field he once rode past on his bike as a kid. That connection isn’t just sentimental – it’s a daily reminder of the commitment he feels to the community that shaped him. As Capital’s President and CEO, Shamash leads a company that serves more than 800,000 members across 21 counties in Pennsylvania, which includes the Lehigh Valley. Capital Blue Cross is more than just a health insurer – it’s also a community partner working to improve access to effective, affordable care.

In a recent episode of the C-Speak podcast – titled “Leading with Locally Grown Passion” – Shamash talked about how he balances innovation, regulation, and culture while staying grounded in the region he still calls home. 3. Use AI to Enhance, Not Replace Artificial intelligence is transforming how businesses operate, and Capital Blue Cross is no exception. But Shamash is clear: AI should support the work people do, not replace them.

“AI comes up in every boardroom conversation now,” he said. “It brings both risk and opportunity, especially in a highly regulated industry like ours.”

One example: Capital has launched a pilot program in which AI helps summarize conversations between members and the customer services team so that the Capital staff can focus more on follow-up services. “We still need our people making the final decisions,” Shamash said. “The key is moderating how you use technology to its best extent, but not going too far, which I think could be detrimental to people and our industry.”

1. Doing Good Is Good Business 4. Be a Lifelong Learner Shamash believes that community engagement and business performance aren’t separate goals – they’re intertwined.

“Even with all the changes, it's still a people business,” he said. “It's still about that relationship with employers. Do they trust you?”

By investing in local schools and community nonprofits, Capital Blue Cross builds trust with the very people it serves. That trust, Shamash said, can be a competitive advantage.

2. Slow Down to Speed Up In a fast-paced industry like healthcare, Shamash sees value in pausing to understand the big picture.

“Often we get so focused on the tactics that we start missing the bigger picture,” he explained.

Capital Blue Cross is an Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.

“That's why slowing down can sometimes help us move faster and more effectively in the long run.”

He likened it to chess: You need to anticipate, not just react. “As a leader, how do you get your teams to think two steps ahead?” he said.

When asked what skills matter most in today’s rapidly changing world, Shamash said: “While it’s hard to predict exactly what the future holds, one thing is constant: learning.”

While technology, regulations, and customer expectations are constantly shifting, Shamash believes staying curious and adaptable is more than a personal strength – it’s a business necessity. “I view learning as a journey,” he said. “If you're not reading trade publications, no matter what your trade is, you're going to fall behind.
