Mayfair Park will come alive with over 100 crafters offering handmade, affordable holiday gifts on Saturday, October 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

One of the first boutiques of the season in our region, the Lakewood event features a wide range of quality crafters and artists displaying Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas items. Jewelry, cloth-

ing, quilts, cards, gourds, gift bags, scarves, purses, wood crafts, paintings, candles, soaps, lotions and many other beautiful handcrafted items will be for sale.

Event admission is free, and each merchant handles their own sales.

Refreshments are available for purchase to benefit Lakewood Meals on Wheels.

Mayfair Park is located at 5720

Clark Avenue, at the corner of South Street. Parking for the event will be available at the park. Additional parking and a free shuttle will service the Lakewood City Hall east parking lot (5050 Clark Avenue).

Halloween fun at Lakewood's parks

Every November at the Award of Valor Luncheon, Lakewood takes the time to recognize Sheriff 's deputies, firefighters and residents who have demonstrated heroism and outstanding service to the community. This year will follow that tradition, with a luncheon at noon on Wednesday, November 7 at The Centre.

The Award of Valor annual luncheon brings together over 400 people, including Lakewood civic and business leaders, public safety professionals, block captains, Sheriff ’s Station volunteers, Volunteers on Patrol and residents.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby and Sheriff Jim McDonnell will speak and join the Lakewood community in a show of support and appreciation for local heroes and public safety personnel.

Retired KOCE-TV news anchor and L.A. Emmy award winner Ed Arnold will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

“This event is a great opportunity to say thank-you to the Sher-

iff ’s deputies and firefighters who work hard every day protecting and serving us, and to the community volunteers who have gone above and beyond in the cause of public safety in Lakewood,” said Mayor Steve Croft. “If you are able to, I hope you can join us at this wonderful and meaningful annual city event.”

Reservations are required. Tickets are $32 each and tables of nine are available for $288 if purchased by 5:00 p.m. on October 26. After that, tickets will be $42 each. Seats are not guaranteed after October 31.

Lakewood's traditional Halloween Carnivals offer fun and safety for youngsters on the year's scariest night. Special carnival activities are scheduled for Wednesday, October 31 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Biscailuz, Bloomfield, Bolivar, Boyar, Del Valle, Mayfair,

Palms and San Martin parks.

“Haunted houses” for little ghosts and goblins to venture inside will be available at Bolivar, Del Valle, Palms and San Martin parks. Volunteers are needed to run carnival booths and assist with the haunted houses. For in-

What's happening in October?

Fall is upon us in Lakewood.

Schools have come alive again (which is a reminder to all of us drivers to be extra careful on the road). Trees will soon start to turn colors. Halloween and, yes, the holiday season are just around the corner. Can you believe it?

Fall is also a time when lots of Lakewood’s favorite traditional activities take place, and I encourage you to consider taking part in some.

A fresh assortment of recreation classes and programs is starting up. New offerings this season include: Cooking with Whitney classes for adults and kids; a travel trip to see the musical “Wicked” at the Pantages Theatre; and a fall Movie Night Under the Stars, on Lisa Fernandez Field at Mayfair Park, celebrating the 25th anniversary of “The Sandlot” movie.

• Older Adults Benefits Information Fair. The city organizes this health care event for seniors featuring representatives from different health and benefit plans.

The event is timed to help with decisions you may want to make during Medicare’s annual open enrollment period. It’s October 15 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Weingart Senior Center. Call 562-6306141 for details.

• Head-to-Toe Health Screening Event. The city teams up with Lakewood Regional Medical Center to offer this free program at Mayfair Park on October 17 from 9 a.m. to noon. It’s designed to help attendees improve their long-term health. To RSVP, call 844-673-4328. Screenings are free for anyone age 55 or older.

• Lakewood Education Foundation golf tournament on October 8 to raise funds for Lakewood

classroom improvement projects.

Learn valuable information, tips and best practices on handling emergency situations at home and work. Experts from the City of Lakewood, American Red Cross and other agencies will be on hand.

City Spotlight Super Saturday at Teen Scary Movie Night

It’s Halloween season and the City of Lakewood is serving up scary movies at the Lakewood Youth Center, 4658 Woodruff Ave. The movies and popcorn are free! This scary event is happening Saturday, October 27 from 6 to 10 p.m. For information, call 562-429-7472.

Family overnight camp in Lakewood

Bring your children, ages 3 to 11, and have a fun overnight campout under the stars October 13-14 at Monte Verde Park, 4626 N. Shadeway Rd. Participate in games, crafts, nature walks, roasting marshmallows and singing around the campfire. All meals and snacks are prepared, so parents can sit back, relax and enjoy nature.

Saturday Night Lights Teen Flag Football

On Saturday, October 20, Bloomfield Park, at 21420 Pioneer Blvd., will host the annual Saturday Night Lights Flag Football Tournament from 2 to 6 p.m. This fun, athletic event is offered to middle and high school aged teens. Teams of five can sign up for the event prior to the tournament, or on the night of the event. Individual players are also encouraged to attend and will be placed on teams in middle school and high school divisions.

Lakewood Youth Sports referees will officiate the timed games. Snacks will be served, and prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. Call 562-8651717 to pre-register.

Travel Trip to Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade

October 2018 Back by popular demand! Kickstart your holidays with wonderment for the whole family when Lakewood's affordable travel program heads to the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade on Thursday, December 20.

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade is the premier Christmas event for not only Orange and Los Angeles County, but all of Southern California. Over a million people have viewed the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade each year in its 100-year history. Homes, yachts, docks, and whole landscapes are transformed into a magical holiday experience as the Newport Harbor comes alive with decorations. Guests may bring their own food and beverages onboard or there are many eateries nearby to purchase snacks. Beverages will be available for onboard purchase. No alcohol, ice chests, coolers, or glass containers are allowed. The boat is not wheelchair accessible. Please dress warmly.

Please arrive at Burns Community Center, 5510 Clark Ave., Lakewood, at 4:00 p.m. for check-in. The bus will leave promptly at 4:15 p.m. and will return at 9:00 p.m.

The cost of this trip is $48 per person. An adult must accompany children of all ages. Last day to register is Monday, December 10 or until filled.

Fun-tastic Family Night with Buster Balloon’s Halloween SPOOKtacular

Buster Balloon’s Halloween SPOOKtacular is a kooky, spooky good time that will have both children and adults howling with laughter and shrieking with delight at The Centre, 5000 Clark Ave. on Friday, October 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It’s sure to be an experience you’ll never forget! Chicken fingers, mashed potatoes, lemonade and a dessert will be served prior to the show. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Lakewood Emergency Fair

The City of Lakewood will host its first-ever Emergency Fair on Saturday, November 3, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Burns Community Center, 5510 Clark Ave. Gather information, attend presentations and view live demonstrations regarding tips, ideas and best practices concerning emergency situations at home and work. You can speak with representatives from the following groups to ensure you are prepared for the next emergency: Lakewood Public Safety, Lakewood Neighborhood Watch, SoCal Animal Response Team, Shakey Quakey House, Emergency Services Restoration, Bob Peters Fire Protection, Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department, American Red Cross, and more! How to register for Project Shepherd assistance

The holiday season can be tough for some Lakewood households, including those who have faced unemployment or underemployment for many months.

If you are a Lakewood resident facing tough economic times, your Lake-

wood neighbors want to help. The registration period to receive help from Project Shepherd runs from November 5 to November 18 at the Burns Community Center and Palms Park Community Center. Registered families will be notified in December of the time and place to pick up assistance. Visit www.lakewoodcity. org/ProjectShepherdRegistration for additional information.

Eligibility requirements: • Lakewood residents only.

• Those who are low-income, unemployed or on public assistance.

To register, bring the following: • A current utility bill and a valid driver’s license or government award letter.

You can help thank a servicemember

Write your message on one of the free 2018 Thank A Servicemember postcards.

Since the launch of the City of Lakewood's "Thank a Servicemember" campaign in 2014, more than 23,000 postcards and letters of appreciation have been collected from the greater Lakewood community that were forwarded to U.S. servicemen and women deployed overseas.

Holiday greetings and letters of thanks will be collected again this year through early December. At City Hall as well as other locations around town, you will be able to fill out a free Lakewood commemorative postcard or drop off your own letter or card (please, no envelopes or glitter and no cards larger than 8.5" x 11"). The city will send all submissions to servicemembers overseas through the military support group, Operation Gratitude.

“The dedicated men and women who serve far from home are our family, friends and neighbors, and we are so grateful for their incredible patriotism and bravery,” said Mayor Steve Croft. “Help us show them how much we honor their sacrifice and the risks they endure by taking the time to write a note of appreciation.”

Statistics show: Lakewood Center is very safe Fewer crimes are committed at Lakewood Center per million annual visitors than at other shopping malls surveyed in the south

Los Angeles County region.

An average of 19 crimes per 1 million visitors occurred at neighboring major shopping malls

compared to only 13 crimes at Lakewood Center, based on statistics compiled for the first six months of 2018.

“Creating a safe environment at Lakewood Center is a priority for the City of Lakewood, and we’re glad the statistics bear out that our efforts in partnership with the mall and the Sheriff ’s Department work,” said Mayor Steve Croft.

Steps that the City and Lakewood Center take in partnership to ensure safety: • For over 10 years, the City and Lakewood Center have partnered to provide Sheriff ’s deputies to patrol the center year-round.

• A one-of-a-kind “Safety Center” is a joint effort. The Safety Center is located with the mall’s own security office for maximum collaboration. The Safety Center, which is staffed by civilians, provides Live Scan fingerprinting and City information.

• While the specifics of the Lakewood Center security program are confidential, it has a highly trained and impressive team.

• Lakewood Center Security Officers go beyond securing Lakewood Center; they also provide valuable customer services. Most

recently three Security Officers were celebrated for the life-saving measures performed on a guest at Lakewood Center.

• The City has funded the installation and ongoing operation of high-speed license plate reading cameras around the perimeter of Lakewood Center, which has resulted in over 175 arrests since its installation in 2012.

“Lakewood Center has been ex-

tremely important to the economic health of our community since it opened as America’s largest shopping mall in the 1950s,” said Croft.

“As the statistics show, Lakewood Center remains a very safe place to shop, and I hope Lakewood residents will continue to make it a place they feel comfortable to visit and to patronize for their personal benefit and for the economic betterment of our community.” ♦

Two senior events on health and benefits

Free health screenings for anyone 55 years and over.

Seniors and their family members are encouraged to take advantage of two free programs running this month. Seniors can get help demystifying the maze of Medicare/senior benefits choices and take ad-

vantage of free medical screenings.

The Weingart Senior Center will host its annual Older Adults Benefits and Information Fair on Monday, October 15 from 10 a.m. to noon. At this event, seniors can pick up health insurance and benefitrelated materials and speak with company representatives to help them compare the plans.

Golf event to help Lakewood schools

You can help students attending Lakewood schools by supporting the Lakewood Education Foundation (LEF) Golf Tournament on Monday, Octo-

ber 8. And, you don’t even have to play golf to support the cause!

Through the generous donations of Lakewood residents and businesses, LEF was able to

donate over $50,000 last year in grants of up to $500 to dozens of local teachers for classroom improvement projects. These grants provided electronic tablets, microscopes and other science equipment; art and physical education supplies; books of all kinds and reading levels; and a variety of classroom technology such as Apple TVs and microphones.

But many worthy grant requests couldn’t be supported because LEF didn’t have enough funds. Here’s how you can help to fund more of those requests this year: • Play golf (or sponsor another golfer, such as a high school student) at the October 8 tourna-

ment, starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Lakewood Country Club. The entry fee of $135 includes greens fees, golf cart, awards banquet, goodie bag and on-course small bites and beverages. See the tournament brochure at www. lakewoodeducation.org.

• Buy a “Tee Sign” with your name/message for $100.

• Donate a raffle prize of merchandise or a gift card worth $25 or more.

• Donate directly to LEF by mail or online.

You Say Tomayto, I Say Tomahto You’ve probably noticed that unless you’ve been cloned, no one looks or believes exactly like you do. Isn’t that grand? After all, would you want everyone to look and think the same as you?

How boring would that be?

Still, there are those who feel that unless you pray to the same God, hold the same beliefs, and look like them, you don’t belong. It’s high school all over again—clicks ostracizing you if you aren’t pretty enough, athletic enough, or just enough, period.

Sadly, the clicks still exist. Human beings are ousting other human beings simply for being different. Where did they get the idea that this was their Earth? That they, and they alone, dictate who belongs and who doesn’t?

Clearly, they didn’t get the memo explaining that they don’t have a monopoly on existing, whether it be in this country or this planet.

It’s time to accept that whether you say tomayto or tomahto; whether you’re brown, white, or somewhere in between; whether you’re a man, woman, or still not sure deep inside, that’s OK. Let everyone work it out. It’s their journey.

Accept the differences. Bury the fear. That is, after all, what’s behind the lack of tolerance.

Free paper shredding event returns in November

Avoid identity theft by safely disposing of documents.

Identity theft is a continuing problem, and the City of Lakewood and EDCO Waste Services are teaming up again to help with the biannual Lakewood Shreds event.

On Saturday, November 3, from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot behind the Iacoboni Library, Lakewood residents can take advantage of easy drive-through shredding and recycling services, as well as pick up some freebies (while they last).

Residents will enter the parking lot behind Iacoboni Library off of Civic Center Way and drive through to access these services: • Shredding: Bring up to three bankers-style boxes (or large trash bags) of sensitive documents such as bank statements and tax records for free shredding on site.

• Batteries and e-waste: Bring used household batteries and electronic waste, such as TVs, computers, keyboards, print-

ers and cell phones for environmentally safe disposal.

• Mulch: Bring bags or containers to get up to two 30-lb bags of free mulch. As a courtesy, Lakewood employees will shovel the mulch.

• Freebies: Giveaways include a battery box to collect used batteries, motor oil recycling

kits, and one free Shop Lakewood…Stay Lakewood Loyal bag per car.

Please do NOT bring these items to the event, as they are hazardous waste: • No lightbulbs of any sort • No household toxics like paint, insecticides, chemicals • No expired medications or sharps Hazardous waste and ewaste are accepted on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at EDCO’s large transfer facility located at 2755 California Avenue in Signal Hill.

Lakewood's annual College Fair will take place on Tuesday, October 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Centre, 5000 Clark Avenue. Participants (ages 1522) will have the opportunity to speak

to representatives from colleges and universities, and get the information needed on admission, testing, transcripts, transfers, enrollment registration, fees and deadlines.

All students in attendance are eligible to win a $250 scholarship sponsored by the Lakewood Teen Action Committee.

No, it’s not a tiny new house along Del Amo Boulevard…can you guess what it is?

The new stormwater capture system at Bolivar Park includes a small 10’ x 14’ windowless building that contains equipment for sending stormwater from the flood control channel to the new reservoir under Bolivar Park. To make that building more attractive and to fit into the neighborhood, the city designed a plastic wrap to go around the building and make it look like a Lakewoodstyle house.

The graphic wrap was installed on September 10.

Weingart Senior Center offering free flu shots The flu season is here and a walk-in, flu shot clinic is set for Tuesday, October 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Weingart Senior Center at 5220 Oliva Ave. The clinic is free, and is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Health Department and the City of Lakewood. It is geared toward adults over age 50, but anyone age six months and older may receive a shot, while supplies last. For more information, call the Weingart Senior Center at 562-630-6141. ♦

Work continues on the final adjustments to the Bolivar stormwater project. The grass field north of the swimming pool is now looking better and is open for use. It will get re-seeded in the near future to look even better. The field will be closed during that re-seeding time. All three of the new picnic shelters installed at the park are now open for use.

The most westerly shelter will be closed temporarily when the field next to it is re-seeded. ♦

Sheriff 's station becomes "Haunted Jail"

On Friday, October 26 from 4 to 10 p.m., the Lakewood Sheriff ’s Station will be transformed into a “Haunted Jail” with food, fun and games.

The scary jail is built and hosted by station volunteers, Explorer Scouts and deputies donating their time. Along with a scary jail for visitors 12 and older, there is also a less scary version for younger children.

The event also features food, pony rides, a petting zoo, pumpkin painting, face painting and more. The Haunted Jail is free, but tickets for these added features must be purchased at the event.

The FOLL "Members only" sales are Thursday, October 11 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and Friday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those interested in becoming members at the pre-sale can take advantage of the widest selection before the public sale. Help on home repair projects for low income residents

Painting is offered under the city program.

Using special federal and local housing funds, the City of Lakewood is offering grants of up to $3,000 and interest-free, deferred-payment loans of up to $18,000 for low income residents to repair and rehabilitate their homes.

Hundreds of Lakewood residents have successfully used the city-run program to make needed repairs they otherwise would not have been able to afford. Often times it is a senior living alone on a low, fixed income. Other times it is a family struggling economically.

The smaller $3,000 grants never need to be paid back. The larger loans only need to be paid back when the house is sold or refinanced or the title is transferred.

Income limits are set by the federal government and are $54,250 for a resident living alone, and $77,500 for a household of four.

The larger loans can help with improvements such as: • roofing or flooring repair or replacement • electrical or plumbing upgrades • kitchen or bathroom remodeling • fumigation or repair of termite damage • HVAC repair or installation • stucco, door or window repair or replacement • exterior or interior painting

The smaller grants can help with exterior painting and minor repairs to windows, doors and stucco.

The home must be a singlefamily, owner-occupied dwelling in Lakewood. Other re-

strictions apply. The program is designed to help low income residents make needed repairs to their homes and to maintain and improve the look of Lakewood neighborhoods.
