Hewitt fire station number #2 officially opened on May 15, which greatly increases Hewitt firemen’s ability to cover the entire city with quicker response times. The new station also adds additional staff—with eight on-duty personnel and 3-person fire engines.
The fire station is 8,348 square feet with thee truck bays, six dorms, 2.5 bathrooms, report room, office, utility, shop and fitness room. It also contains an open concept living, dining and kitchen area. Cost of construction was competitively bid at $4,253,890, with bond funds used to finance the project. Construction started after the groundbreaking on February 21, 2025 and was completed in one year and three months.

The Hewitt Fire Department consists of 27 career firefighters—operating out of two fire stations 24 hours a day, seven days a week. On average, the department responds to over 1,800 calls per year that consist of structural fires, vehicle fires, grass/brush fires, motor vehicle collisions, vehicle extrication, hazardous materials incidents, and first response to medical emergencies.
Our mission is to provide the highest quality protection to preserve lives and property of the citizens of Hewitt. Through training, education, fire prevention, and respect for our citizens, we will accomplish this mission. We strive to serve as positive role models through community involvement and activities.
Hewitt firemen cut a fire hose to officially open the new fire station #2.

Americans still love to read. At least, that’s what a new survey from the Pew Research Center confirms. Released in April 2026, the report—based on responses from 8,046 adults nationwide—found that three in four U.S. adults read at least part of a book in the past 12 months. Print remains the clear favorite: 64% of adults reached for a physical book last year, even as digital options have grown considerably. E-book readership has climbed to 31% of adults since Pew first tracked it at 17% in 2011, and audiobook listening has more than doubled in the same period, reaching 26%.
The broader publishing market reflects the same

reading becomes a group activity, books become conversations—and conversations, in a community like Hewitt, become the fabric of civic life.
Research on reading groups consistently shows that book clubs do more than simply move through titles. They reduce social isolation—particularly among adults who may otherwise have limited opportunities for structured interaction with neighbors. They build the habit of articulating and understanding perspectives different from one’s own— a civic skill as much as a literary one.
Bibliotherapy—a therapeutic technique involving

story. The American Association of Publishers reported that print book sales made up 70% of the adult fiction and nonfiction market and 92% of the children’s and young adult market last year. While Audible, Kindle Unlimited, and Spotify’s growing audiobook catalog have made listening more accessible than ever, a rising tide of digital fatigue and renewed interest in analog lifestyles suggests print books are not going anywhere soon. The data suggests that digital growth and print’s dominance are not competing forces— they reflect a reading public that has simply found more ways to read.
Yet reading, the data shows, is still largely a solitary act, regardless of format. Only 7% of Americans surveyed had participated in a book club in the past year. That gap between readers and community is exactly what public libraries are built to close. When

reading, reflecting on, and discussing literature— even uses book clubs to support individuals living with chronic conditions or communication difficulties, including aphasia, autism spectrum disorder, and stuttering. These groups create a non-threatening, collaborative environment in which participants can address a wide range of topics, helping to reduce the weight of daily stressors in meaningful ways.
Every month, Hewitt Public Library hosts two book clubs for adults. The groups work together to create a reading list, then they gather to share ideas, theories, impressions, and the kind of honest literary opinion that only happens when people feel genuinely at home. All are welcome—no prior reading experience required, only curiosity.

We welcomed two newly-elected members, Brenda Turner and Mike Hamilton at the May 18 Hewitt City Council meeting. Welcome and congratulations! We look forward to serving alongside you in service to our community.

Brenda Lavender Turner has called Hewitt home since 1976. Brenda retired after a long and rewarding career in education—serving in both migrant education programs and early childhood education. She spent the majority of her career teaching Kindergarten for nearly 30 years. Before her first term on the Hewitt City Council, Brenda served for several years on the Board of Adjustment, and has remained actively involved in numerous local programs and community initiatives for decades. In 1975, Brenda married Charles D. “Charlie” Turner—another active member of the Hewitt community. Together they built a life rooted in service to their family and community, until his passing several years ago. Her son, Brad and daughter-in-law, Andrea, and their family also live in Hewitt. Brenda is the proud grandmother of two granddaughters, Joley and Rachel. Brenda has a deep love for her family, friends, and community. She is honored to serve the citizens of Hewitt and remains grateful for the opportunity to give back to the city she proudly calls home.
Mike Hamilton has worked in a wide range of fields, including IT, education, retail, podcasting, and audio/video production—bringing decades of real-world business and leadership experience to public service. He is the co-founder of Rogue Media Network in Waco, a growing media company focused on storytelling, community connection, and local engagement.
Mike chose to serve on the City Council because he believes community members should step up and be involved, rather than simply complain from the sidelines. He is passionate about listening to residents, supporting responsible growth, and helping make the community a better place for future generations.
He and his wife, who serves as an Assistant Superintendent with Waco ISD, are proud parents of four sons and one daughter, and grandparents to five grandchildren. Family remains at the center of their lives, and they cherish spending time together whenever possible.
