January
Community photography This year’s calendar is filled with photos taken by our community. We wanted to see our city through your eyes, and received more than 193 individual photo entries. It was a tough decision but a judging panel narrowed the field down to the 12 finalists you see on the pages of this calendar. A competition for the 2025 Community Calendar has also been launched. Recycle it Everything you recycle makes a difference. Bottles, containers and packaging made from glass, aluminium, steel, hard plastic, paper and cardboard can all be recycled in your yellow lid bin. Recycling is the first step to capturing materials that can be used again and again. Everything you recycle saves earth’s resources and protects our environment.

Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) We love your foods scraps and garden waste. To have the best quality compost to feed our parks and open spaces, we need your help in making sure no bags including compostable and biodegradable, food stickers and packaging of any kind go into the green lid FOGO bin. Many of these items do not break down during the composting process, resulting in poor quality compost that cannot be used.

Stormwater drains are just for rain Stormwater drains move rain water from roads, roofs and gutters through a systems of pipes that lead into our creeks and rivers and then to the bay and ocean. This is how litter like cigarette butts, food and drink packaging dropped on the streets ends up in the ocean. Help us to keep it clean by putting your litter in the public bins, or take it home with you. Remember drains are just for rain.

National Recycling Week Join us for National Recycling Week on 11–17 November. Even the smallest recycling act can make a big impact when it comes to creating a sustainable future. Putting your recycling in the bin loose and not in bags means more of it can be turned into new things like park benches, cardboard boxes and even roads. Recycling in bags cannot be sorted because the bags can damage equipment at sorting facilities and present a safety risk to staff.
