STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA

Executive Branch

The Governor of South Carolina is the chief executive of the state. The governor is elected to a four-year term and may serve up to two consecutive terms. The Lieutenant Governor is the second-in-command of the state's executive branch. The Lt. Governor assumes the o ce if the Governor is unable to fulfill his or her duties. The South Carolina Constitution provides for the separate election of nine executive o cers.

Legislative Branch

The legislature of the State of South Carolina is a bicameral General Assembly comprised of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate consists of 46 members who are elected from single member districts. The South Carolina House of Representatives consists of 124 part-time citizen legislators elected every two years to represent our state's 124 separate single-member districts.

Federal Representation

South Carolina is represented by two senators in the US Senate. Senators serve six-year terms with staggered elections. South Carolina has seven representatives in the US House with southern Beaufort County falling into District 1. Each district elects a representative to the House of Representatives for a two-year term.
