ADVENTURE RACING AMONG THE MOUNTAINS OF GREECE
F
OUNDED in the US by Joe De Sena in 2007, Spartan racing has grown in popularity all over the world including here in Australia. Spartan's mission is to help people live without limits, through training and race events that help everyone develop the physical and mental strength to take on all of life's challenges with an unbreakable
spirit. The Spartan belief is that living ‘the hard way’, based on ancient wisdom and daily training, can make us the people we were born to be. There are three key events that make up Spartan racing: The Sprint requires competitors to complete 20 obstacles (think: climbing walls and ropes, crawling under barbed wire, traversing
monkey bars, throwing a spear, and more) over 5km of off-road trail featuring mud and water. Typically, people starting out on their Spartan Race journey will commence with this event. The Super is the next level of challenge in Spartan Racing, which demands completion of 25 obstacles (all more challenging than The Sprint) over a 10km course at
intense elevation. The third and ultimate Spartan test is The Beast, aptly named because it requires completion of 30 obstacles that require strength, skill, and grit, over 21km (the length of a half-marathon!) of uneven terrain and elevation changes. The Spartan Trifecta will see Mick — a salesperson at Dwyers Motor Group — and Trent, a farm manager
for Snowy River Angus, compete in all three events over a two-day period. “We start with The Super on Saturday morning. In the afternoon we do The Sprint, and then on Sunday we do The Beast,” says Mick, who’ll turn 50 on the day before his first race in Greece.
